Amongthereaders,then,areincluded personsofeveryage,itsarticlesgiving evidenceofmaturityofunderstanding. Fromwhathasbeensaid,itisanundeniablefactthattherehasbeenarevivalofcontemporaryFrenchliteratureinaCatholicsense;'thatistosay thatmanynotablewritershaveabandonedthewaysoferrorandembraced theentiretruthofCatholicism.They' thusconstituteanucleusofdistinguishedliterateurs,whosereligiousinspirationandhighartisticpowercompelnotmerelyrespect,but'admiration. AdolfHarnackisoneofthespiritual lampsofmodernGermany.Heisthe leaderof"LiberalProtestantism,"the chiefofthosewhoseektoconstruct fromthewreckageoftheoutworn creedofthesixteenthcenturyaplatformonwhichheandhisadmirers, whocannotbeinfidelsandwillnotbe Catholics,maystand.Yetwemustnot seemtomisstatehisposition.Professor Harnackstillclingswithmuchenthusiasmtowhathecalls"thespiritof Protestantism."Hedoesnotthink thatthesectsaredestinedtospeedy death;onthecontrary,hebelieves thattheywillcomeoutofthetrial throughwhichtheyarepassingstrongerandmoreconvincingthanever.But therearegreathistoricmomentswhen Protestantsmustfightshoulderto shoulderagainst"thecommonfoe;" andthat,saystheGermanscholar.is whatishappeningnow. 'Theenemywhichthreatensusis Catholicismasareligionandaneccle siasticalspirit;itisClericalismand Ritualism,thealluringunionofexalted pietyandsolemnsecularity,andthe substitutionforreligionofobedience. Thisisthespiritwhichisknockingat thedoorsoftheProtestantchurches inGermany-IfearalsoinEnglandandisdemanaingadmittance.Ithas mightyallies.Allthosewhointheir heartsareindifferenttoreligionareits secretfriends.Intheirview,ifReligion andChurcharetocontinuetoexistat all,itistheCatholicformofthem whichisstillthemosttolerableandthe mostrational."

Thisis,inaparagraph,theessence ofthe"ThoughtsonProtestantism" whichthegreatGermanleaderintends torawarningtohiscountrymenand co-religionists.ThesethoUghtsareably setforth;butinreadingthemtheconeictionisoverandoveragainenforced ononethattheauthorhasnorealunderstandingofthespiritoftheChurch whosevictorious_marchhesoearnestly laments.
Itisaremarkabledocument,this littlebookofHarnack's;anditproves anewthatallovertheworldthefields arewhitefortheharvest,andthewinds ofGodarestirringtheripeninggrain. ThehaughtyAnglo-Saxonandthe stolidGerman,whoforthreehundred yearshavejeeredat"themummery" and"theemptyforms"ofourholyreligion,arepeepingundertheveilsand longingtohaveshareinCatholiclight andwarmth.Itisadutytoaidthis holymovementbyprayerandexample. Mr.RyansettledinRockhampton, whereheappliedhimselftohisnewlyacquiredprofession.Hisprofound wisdom,wonderfulgraspoflegalprinciples,keenperceptionof-facts,aided byagracefulspeechclothedinelegant diction,herapidlybuiltupalarge practice.Asacriminallawyerhisfame wasearlywon,butitwasinthedry involvedcaselawthathiserudition andsparklinglogicmadehisadvocacy aforcetobereckonedwith.Sincehe enteredpoliticsandafterwardsbecame Attorney-General,hehasbeenengaged onsomeofthemostimportantcases thathaveeverbeenpresentedtothe judiciaryofAustralia.Asaconstitutionallawyerhehasnosuperioratthe bar.Hehasbeenuniformlysuccessful innearlyeverycasehehasappearedin, whetherintheStateSupremeCourt, HighCourtoftheCommonwealth,or thePrivyCouncilofGreatBritain.He personallyappearedinEnglandearly lastyearintheEasternAppealCase, andhissuccessfulpleadingsavedthe StateofQueenslandnolessasumthan £70,000.EntersPoliticalLife. ForaquarterofacenturySt.Patrick'scontinuedaloneonitssublime missionoftrainingyoungAustralians andsendingthemforthtothe"reapers oftheharvest"inthisneedyvineyard ofOurDivineMaster.Godblessedand prosperedtheworksonoblyundertaken,andin1909ourgreatCardinal decidedtoerectanothereducational ertablishmentandtodedicateitto theChurch'smostcherishedwork,the conversionofthepagan.Withthat zealandforesightwhichweresocharacteristicofhim,hesawthatindays tocomethegreatdutyoftheconversionoftheinhabitantsoftheislands surroundingAustraliawoulddevolve uponthechildrenofthisland.The Cardinalsawthegreatmassesof humanityscatteredthroughoutthe islandsoftheseasthatwashourshores sunkinthedarknessanddegradation ofpaganism,andhismightyheart achedforthosepoorsoulsdeprivedin lifeofthecivilisationwhichCatholicism,theonlytrueChristianity,brings. anddeprivedatdeathoftheconsolationsandhelpsofourholyreligion.It wasnotinCardinalMoran'snatureto seeawrongandnottodevisearemedy. remindedtoAustraliansofthesublimityofthepriesthood,andoftheir dutytothepagan,andasalastingtestimonytothememoryofoneofIreland'smostdistinguishedsons.In1910 ournewcollegesetforthonitscareer, nutyetasamissionarycollege--forthe timeisnotyetripeforbeginningthis noblework-butforthepresentasa houseoftrainingfurthejuniorstudentsofManlyCollege.
On1stMarchofthatyear,seventeen youngmen,joyousattheprospectof beingthepioneersofanewseminary, boardedthewesterntrainatSydney fortheirnewhomeinSt.Columba's College,Springwood.ItmustbementionedinpassingthatthesefirststudentsofSt.Columba'swereraisedto thealtarinDecember,1916,andare nowlabouringaszealouspriestsindifferentpartsofAustralia.
Thenumberofstudentshasincreased steadilyeachyearsince1910,andlast year,astheaccompanyingphoto shows,wehavefifty-threeyoung Levitesintrainingforthegreatwork ahead.Yetthisisnotnearlyenough. Australiahasapopulationofabouta millionCatholics.ForthefutureAustralianpriesthoodthereareonlyabout onehundredandfiftystudentsintraining.SurelyfromamillionCatholics thereshouldbemorevocationsthan this.Inmanycountriesthereisa superabundanceofpriestsinproportion totheCatholicpopulation,butherein Australiathereare,alas!toofew.Why isthis?Godhasassuredlycalledmany moretoserveHiminHisvineyard. WhyisitthatmoredonotfollowHis call?InWesternAutraliaourCatholic peoplearescatteredthroughoutanimmensearea,andperhapsthefacilities forfollowingthecallofGodarenot alwaysofthebest.However,theChristianBrothersaregraduallyspreading theirschoolsthroughouttheState,and doubtlesstheinfluencewhichthese self-sacrificingmenwillhaveonour boyswillbeforthebetter.Letushope. then,thatinthenearfuturetherewill bemanymorevocationsfrom"the West,"andthatSt.Columba'smaythe soonerbededicatedtotheworkfor whichitisintended.Wecannotundertakethisworkwhileourowncountry standssosorelyinneedofpriests. Makehaste,therefore,sonsofAustralia,toswelltheranksofthestudents,andtoadministertothespiritual wantsofyournativecountry,and soon,pleaseGod,tothatofotherlands also.
ThegreatwarhasemptiedtheseminariescfEurope.Irelandwillneedher bravesonstosupplythisgreatwant, andtokeepgoingtheChineseMission. whichshehaslatelyopened,sothat Australiawillhavetodependuponher ownresourcestosupplypriests,not onlyforherself,butalsoforthemissionsoftheislandsofthePacific.Can wedoit?IsittoomuchtoaskAustralianstomakethesacrifice?Ithink not.
Ourcollege,Ifear,isnotknownto Australiansasitshouldbeknown,for ifitwerebetterknown,thelifefor whichittrainsuswouldbemoreloved, and,consequently,morewouldembrace it.
St.Columba'sissituatedatSpringwood,47mileswestofSydney.inthe centreofsixhundredacresoftypicalBlueMountainscenery.Springwoodis oneofthehealthiestplacesonthe'Blue Mountains,and,Iventuretosay,in thewholeofAustralia.
Thecollegeitselfisatpresentbut
halfitsintendedsize.Letushopethat increasingnumberswillsoonnecessitateitscompletion.Itfacesthebioad Pacificinorderthat,asCardinal Moranyid,itmayremindeverystudeatwhoentersitswallsthathismissionieamongsttheislandersawayto theeast.
Thehealthofthefuturestudents formednosmallpartofthecaresof themenwhodesignedourcollege.The large,well-ventilatedstudyhallsgreatly facilitatetheworkofstudy.Thedormitories,too,arespaciousandairy. Awayfrom.theinfluenceofatoodistractingworld,St.Columba'sisan idealplaceforstudy.Studentsareadmittedfromtheageoffifteenupwards. ThecoursepreparatorytotheecclesiasticalstudiesproperincludesEnglish, mathematics,andgeography,whilethe youngstudentmakeshisfirstacquaintancewithLatin,Greek,andFrench. Thusaboywhohashadagoodprimaryeducationmaybeginthestudyof LatingrammarandclassicsatSt. Columba's,priortoenteringphilosophy, whichformsthefirstyearofthereal ecclesiasticalcourse.HewillthenpmteedtoSt.Patrick's,Manly,tocontinuehisphilosophicalstudiesforanotheryearbeforebeginningthefour years'courseoftheology.

Butthereisanothersidetoourcollegelife.Thewholedayisnottakenup exclusivelywiththetrainingofthe mind.Liketheancients,thestudents arefirmadherentstothebeliefthat thebodyshouldbedevelopedsideby sidewiththemind."Menssanain corporenano"isthedesireofevery studentofSt.Columba's.Forthis reason,then,wehaveoursports'field, ourhandballcourt,ourtenniscourt, andourswimmingpool.Cricketholds swayduringthesummer,andprofessorssndstudentsalikewarmlypatronisethegame.Withthefirstintimationofthecoldweather,football begins,andinthisgamemanya strenuousfighthastakenplacebetween the"Philosophers"and"theRest." RamblesinthebeautifulBlueMountainbushofwhichmentionhasbeen inadebeforealsoformapleasantrelaxation theroutine truthofByron'swords,"ThereIsa pleasureinthepathlesswoods,"has beenprovedbeyondalldoubtatSt. Columba's.Therearemanyhillsand gulliestobeexplored,andmanyare thediscoveriesofbeautifulferngroves rindsecludedbowersmadebythe students.
Ourgrottowhichiswelllookedafter byenergeticstudents,whohavea likingforgardening,isrenowned amongthepeopleofthedistrictasone ofthebeautyspotsofSpringwood.But tothestudentitrepresentsmorethan amerepieceofscenery.Itremindshim ofLourdes,andthegrottowherethe greatMotherofGodhasmadesuch miraculousmanifestationsofherlove forherpoor,waywardchildren.Studentsmayoftenbeseenatthegrotto kneelingatthefeetofthestatueof Mary,imploringher,theQneenof Apostles,toguardandwatchoverthem inthelifeoflabourtowhichtheyare called.
