"4fterHomeRule-what'"Thatisthequestionwhichmenofallshadesofpoliticalopinionareasking.Itissaidthatsomethingmorethan evencivilwarandthepriceofConsolsisinvolvedsomethingthatmaypossiblyleadtoseparationfromEngland,andtotheraisingofinternationalcomplicationsinwhichtheBritishEmpireitselfmaysuffer-tochangesbeyondthekenofa("arsonoraRedmond.

ThechangesinIrelandifHome Rulecomesintoforcewillbeofintenseinterest,andareworthyofintelligentanticipation.Theairepullenwhowillcontrolthesechanges makefascinatingstudies.Someof themarernenwhosesunsstillliebeneaththepoliticalhorizon,butwho somedaywillfillthebead-:finesof FleetStreet,andkeepthesiresredhot.Thesunsofothers,looning largeinthepoliticalfirmamenttoday,aresetting.Butall,:re:sea ofstrikingpersonalitiesholdingindividualistIreland,whereoersocalitycountsforeverything,inthehollowoftheirhands.

Letustakeabird's-eyeviewofthe Irishchamberasitwillprobablybe A-benthefirstelectionafterHome Ruleisover.Letuslookatthemen whomaymakehistory,perhapsnot onlyforIreland,butfortheworld.

Ofthe16iconstituenciesintowhich Irelandwillhavebeenredistributed, itissafetosaythatJohnRedmond andhisarmyofNationalistswill havesecuredtheoiajorityastherewardfortheirwinningofHome Rule.

Thelong-promisedBazaarwasopenedintieVaudevilleTheatreonMondaynightbytheHon.J.M.Drew, M.L.('.,intheunavoidableabsence oftheMinisterforWorks,whohad toleaveforGeraldtononbusiness connectedwiththeby-election.FatherMorris,inintroducingtheColonialSecretary,said"WhenMr. Johnsoninformedmethathewould beunabletoperformtheopening ceremony,IthoughtMrs.Johnson woulddothehonoursanddeliver oneofthosehappylittlespeechesfor whichsheissofamed.However,we areindebtedtotheMinisterfor Worksnotonlyforthepresenceof Mrs.Johnson,butalsoforthepresenceofMr.andMrs.Drew,whohave honouredthisfunctionbytheirpresence.TheobjectofthisBazaaris toliquidateaportionofGuildford's shareoftheparochialdebt.Upto 15monthsagoallthedebtswereconcentrated.Midland,anewandrapidlyexpandingtownshiprequiringa newConventand('hurch-school,was helpedbytheoldertownshipof Guildford.Now,however,Midlandis responsibleforitsown£3,000,Guildfasafor4;1,000,whileBellevueand WestGuildfordhadnoresponsibility foreitherGuildfordorMidland.Last yearthefirstBazaarwithin13years washeldatGuildford,andtherecordsuccessachievedonthatoccasionwillbe,IDope,equalled,ifnot surpassed,byoureffortsthisweek. Duringmy15years'experienceof W.A.-andIhavebeeninmostparishcs-Ihavenevermetbetteror moredevotedworkersthaninthis Guildford-Midlandco.1.11.-tinity. Inproposingavoteofthanksto Mr.Drew,FatherMorrisreferredto theColonialSecretaryasamanof whomthe('hurchandtheStatewere justlyproud.AsaCatholichewas neverashamedtoprofesshisfaith, andwasthereforeheldinthehighestesteembyhisco-religionists, whilebyhisstraightforwardnessin publiclifebehadmeritedtherespect ofthewholecommunity.Anarticle byMr.Drewonhisformerchief, ArchbishopO'Reily,ofAdelaide,and publishedinthe"W.A.Record,"had beencopiedbymanyoftheAmerican papersandfavourablycommented upon-afactwhichshowedthatin therealmofjournalismaswellasin thedomainofpolitics,theColonial Secretaryhadachievedasplendid reputation.

ThePresident,Mr.FrankO'Leary, insecondingthevoteofthanks,endorsedtheremarksofFr.Morris, andsaidthatatthepresenttime, wheninotherpartsoftheeoddit wasfashionableforGovernmentsto ignorereligiousenterprise,wewere fortunateinAustraliainhavingmen inpowerwhogavesomemeasureof assistancetocL'urchbuilding,and whodidnotboastoftheirreligious indifferentism.Aslongasthenation'sidealwasChristiandemocracy therewasnodangeroftheperniciousformeofSocialise,hichwincedotherlands.Onbehalfofevery sectionofthecommunityhecordiallywelcomedtheColonialSecretary, andsecondedthevoteofthanks, whichwascarriedwithacclamation.

Afterthispreliminary"parley,"active"hostilities"commenced.The ladiesundoubtedlysustainedtheir reputationasharrackers,andeven the"bashfulyoungmen"(ifthespecieswasrepresented)hadnochoice buttopartup.Apleasingfeatureof thevariousstalls(apartfromtheir artisticdecoration)wasthefineassortmentofsubstantialarticlesdisplayed."Rubbish"wasconspicuous byitsabsence.Inthefaceofso touchthatwasexcellent,ourreporterpreferstoleavethedifficulttask ofdecidire:astotherelativemerits,
