Itissaid,andtrulysaid,thatthe handthatrooksthecradlerulesthe world,for,thatthecommunityat largetakesitstonefromthefamily andthefamilyfromthemother,is apostulatethatappealstoallreason,andthat,incidentallyletme say,foundfrequentexpressionfrom thelipsofthatmakerandunmaker ofpeoples,NapoleonBuonaparte.Necessarily,ofcourse,theindividual mother'sinfluenceisarestrictedone, huttherearemothersotherthan thosegivenbynature,motherswhose influencecanbesofar-reachingas tobepracticallyillimitable;andit iswiththecareerofoneofthese "Lathersofnations"thatthisnotice isconcerned.betus,asapreliminary,takeaglimpse,ahurriedone, at TheFoundationsofherHome. WesternAustraliawasstillinher 'teens(amaidenpeoplevergingon "sweetseventeen"),herpopulation but4,410,when,onthe8thJanuary,1146,theworld-establishedOrderoftheSistersofMercyaddedthe cityofPerthtothenumberofits houses,withUrsulaFrayneasRev. Motherincharge-threeschools,a ladies',aprimary,andanative girls',beingestablishedstraightway. ReinforcedfromtheOldCountryin '48,andagainin'51,thenewhouse prosperedbeyondthehopesofits founders,thoughnowofthosethree contingentsofhelpersMotherMary deSalesremainstheonlysurvivor. Thelistsplanedatmydisposalof thenunsconstitutingthesepioneer bandsarereminiscentofsonicof themostinterestingPagesofCatholichistory-intheWestdearold SisterCatherine(Strahan),whomit wasaneducationinbenignityand Christiansimplicityandcheerfulness toknowIgnatia(delaloyd), worshippedofthepoorasaninstructressandbenefactressMaryFrancis(Gould),cousinofanArchbishop ofMelbourne,andherselflongassociatedeiththemanagementofthe VictoriaSquareLadies'College Baptist(O'Donnell),whosucceeded CrselaFrayneasRev.Mother,and eonaplaceinthevenerationofthe peoplewhichhasneverbeeneclipsed; Aloysius(Kelly),sisterofthedistinguishedJesuitFathers,endEvangelist(O'Reilly),bothinturnhonouredassuperiorsoftheOrderin thisColony.Thenewhousehadits trials(oneofitsearliestbeingthe lossofMotherFrayne,whowascalledawaytotheEast,foundingin MelbournethefirstconventofMercy) butthestormsofitsfirstfiveyears hadbeenweatheredbefore MissEssieByrne, thesubjectofthismemoir,hadyet seenAustralia,thetheatreofher life'swork.WhenMotherUrsula landedonourshoresin'46,Essie wasbutagirlof14,stillataconventschoolinhernativecitybythe Liffey;forshefirstsawthelight .ofthisworldinDublinin1132. TheMissionrowass
IntherichterritoryalreadydescribedtheJesuits,when,afterinfinite trouble,theyLadunitedasufficient quantityofIndians,formedthemintotownships,almostallofwhich werebuiltupononeplan.Bythe helpofcontemporaryaccounts,itis easytoreconstructalmostexactlywhatthemissionsmusthavebeen likeduringtheJesuits'rule.Built roundasquare,theChurchandstore housestilledoneend,andthedwell- ingsoftileIndians,formedofsundriedbricksinthreelongpent-houses completedthethreesides.Ingeneral thehouseswereofenormouslength.Eachfamilyhaditsownapartments, whichwereseparatedfrontthenext apartmentsbyalath-and-plaster wall.Thespaceinthemiddleofthe squarewascarpetedwiththefinest grass.TheChurches,sometimesbuilt ofstoneandsometimesofhard woods,werebeyondalldescription splendid,consideringtheremoteness ofthe.Jesuittownsfromtheoutside world.FrequentlytheChurcheshad threeaisles,loftytowers,richaltars andstatuarybroughtatgreatexpensefromItalyandSpain.
LifeintheMissions
InthesmallermissionstwoJesuits unaccustomedmanagedalltheIndians.Quite astheIndianswereto regularworkofanykind,theordinaryEuropeansystem,aspractised intheSpanishsettlenieits,ofa killedthemoffinhundred,.Theref're theJesuitsinstitutedthesemi-coeinionalsystemofagricultureandof publicworkswithwhichtheirname willheassociatedfor(e'erinAmerica.Tothetar;'cofagriculturethe Jesuitsmarshalledtheirneophytes tothesoundofmusic,andinpro- cessiontothefields,withasaint bornehighaloft,thecommunityeach dayatsunrisetookitsway.Along thepath,atstatedintervals,were shrinesofsaints,andbeforeeachof themtheyprayedandsanghymns.
Astheprocessionadvanced,itbecamegraduallysmallerasgroupsof Indiansdroppedofftoworkthevariousfields,andfinallythepriestand acolytewiththemusiciansreturned alone.Atmidday,beforeeating, theyallunitedandsanghymnsand then,aftert).'eirmealandsiesta,returnedtoworktillsundown,whenthe processionagainrefunnedandthelatoererssingingreturnedtotheir anodes.IntheeveningtheyallrepairedtochurchtosaytheRosary andsingtheLitany,andthentosup andbed.Onrainydaystheyworked atotherindustriesinthesamehalf-Arcadian,half-crenniunistiemanner, onlytheysangtheirhymnsinchurch insteadofinthefields.

Andinadditiontoweaving,theytenneriee,riaiienters.shoos,tailors,hatmakers,coopers,cordage itetvers,boat',enders,certeerights, ',driersandalmosteveryindustry clefi!,indnecessarytoUri,.Theyalso armsandpowder,musical ents,andhetisilversiiiiths, paieters,turners,and riletorstoworktheirprintingpreeosformanyhootswereorintodnt missions,andtheyproduee eneseeiisissinelyexecutedas Hise lebethemonksinEuroenanesteries.Alltheestancias, r ,rieiturallandsandwork- ehopswere,sotospeak,theproper- tyofthecommunity;thatistosay, thecommunityworkedtheniincommon,wasfedandmaintainedby theirproductions,thewholeunder thedirectionofthetwoJesuitswho livedineverytown.Aportionv-s st-tstileeseeciallyforthe'Heinleineneeoforphansandofwidows.The cattleandhorseswerealsousedin
common.Eachfamilyreceivedfrom thecommonstocksufficientforits maintenanceduringgoodconduct. FortheJesuitsheldinitsentirety thePaulinedictumthatifaman willnotwork,thenneithershallhe eat.Butastheyheldit,sothey practiseditthemselvee,furtheirlives. weremostlaborious-teachingand preaching,andactingasoverseersto theIndiansintheirlabourscontinue'ly,fromthefirstmomentoftheir arrivalatthemissionstilltheir death.
CertainoftheIndians,ownedtheir owncowsandhorses,andhadgar- densinwhichtheyworkedbutall theproductwasobligedtobedisposedoftotheJesuitsforthecoalmongood,andinexchangeforthen! theygavecloth,kni%es,scissorsand otherarticlesmadeinthe()Aside world.Clotheswereservedoutto everyIndian,andconsistedforthe menoftrousers,shirtsandstraw hatsorcaps.Thesolecostumeof thewomenwasalongandsleeveless gowncutratherhigh,madeofrough cottoncloth.Thusfoodandclothingcostthecommunitybutlittle, andarudeplentywastheorderof. thehind.
This,then, -wasthesystemby meansofwhichtheJesuitssucceeded,withoutemployingforceofany kind,whichintheircasewouldhave beenquiteimpossible,inmakingthe Geerenisenduretheyokeoftoil.
ReligiousProcessions
Inadditiontothemeansdescribed, theJesuitshadrecoursetofrequent religiousfeasts,forwhichthecalendargavethemfullscope,sothatthe lifeina'JesuitMissionwasmuch diversifiedandrenderedpleasantto theIndians,whohavearootedlove ofshow.
Eachmissionhaditspatronsaint, onhisdaynobodyworked,whilstallwasjoyfulnessandsimple mirth.Atbreakofdayadischarge ofrocketsandapealuponthebells announcedthejoyfulmornandtime forMass.Masswascelebratedwith afullband,theoboe(adoublereed windinstrumentofwood),fagot, lute,iarp,cornet,clarinet,violin, viola,andallotherkindsatinstruments.Massovertheprocessionwas forreed,inwhicheverybodytook part,theJesuitshavingtaken care,bymultiplyingollicesandemploymentstoleavenomanwithout adirectshareinalltheothersdid. Afterparadingthroughthetownthe cavalcadebrokeupandtheIndians devotedtherestofthedayand nighttofeasting,andnotinfrequent- lydancedtillbreakofday. Suchweretheoutwardartswith whichtheJesuitssoughttoattach thesimplepeople,towhomthey str.odinthepositionnotonlyofPas- torsandmastersbothinone,but alsoasprotectorsfromthePaulistas ononeside,rindontheotherfrom theSpaniardsoftheSettlements, whowiththeirEuropeansystemof freecoin!etitienbetweenmanand Tenn,wereperhapsunknowinglythe direstenemiesofthewholeIndian rare. thanreadMr.CunninghamGrahane's book,fromwhichtheforegoingmat- terisculled.Aftertheirexpulsion fromthemissionswhichtheJesuits hadsolongtendedwithsuchcare, givingtheirunsparinglovetotheIn- dians,allwascontusioninthespace ofsixshortmonths,andtheArca- dianlife,whichhadsubsistedmore thantwohundredyears,inthebrief spaceoftwoyearswaslost. Thevastestanciaswerebutbare plains,inwhichthecattlethatwere lefthadallrunwildorperished withneglect,Wildbeastsroamed theoutskirtsofthehalf-deserted towns.TheChurcheswereunserved, andintheeveningairnomorehymnsresounded,nordidthelongwhiterobedprocessionsheadedbyacross passtothefieldstopeacefullabour, marshalledbytheirpriests.TheIndianpopulationhadalmostdisap- pearedwithinthespaceofcigntend twentyyears.

Alookofintensedisgustpassed overRick'sfeatures,andhisdeepseteyesgleamedbeneaththeirshaggybrowswhileheretorted

Carter,now,reallyalarmed,savagelycaughtRickandfoxedhimoutof thegroup.
"Youimpofthedevil,doyouwant todestroyyourself,thatyouare talkinginthismanner?"butinso lowatonethatnoonesaveRick heardhim.
"Iwanttodestroyyou,"wasthe whisperedreply,"andtheevidence thatdoomsmewilltwistthehemp foryourneck-doyoumindthat, MortyCarter?"
Carterdidnotreply; but,summoningoneofthesoldiers,bade himprepareamealforRick,andafterivardassignhimaplacetosleep.
Inanapartmentinanotherportionofthebarrack,entirelyremovedfromthesoldiers'quarters,CaptainDennier,stillinhismarching attire,andwiththedustymarksof hisrecentexpeditionnotyetremoved,stoodisrespectfulattitudebeforeanelderlyofficerofimposing presence.
Thelatterwasalsostanding,but heseemedtohaveassumedtheattituderatherintheheatofhisspeech totheyoungman,andhisfingers playednervouslywiththeribbonof somedecorationuponhisperson.
