Intheyear1608PhilipIII.of Spainimagedhisroyalletterspatent totheSocietyofJesusfortheconventionoftheIndiansintheprovinceofGuayra,Sofarbackas1586 severalFathersoftheOrder,includedamongwhomwasoneScotchman, FatherThomasFields,hadtakenup missionworkaniong'the'Indians,and in1593establishedacollegeat Aecuncion.BothinTucuman,and Paraguaytheywereexpectedbythe SpanishGovernorstolendthemselvestotheenslavementoftheIndians,andtheconditionofaffairsbecamesointolerableintheseplaces thatasaresultoftheirpetitionto theKingofSpainprotectionwasaffordedthembythegrantingofthe abovementionedRoyalletterspatent.
TheReductionofLoretowasthe firstpermanentestablishmentinstitutedbytheJesuitsamongthe Guaranis.Thus,inthewoodsof Paraguay,uponatributaryofthe Parana,butlittleknowneventoday,didtheSocietyofJesuslaythe firstfoundationoftheirfamousMin Pions.Fiatlittlemorethan50years fromthefoundationoftheirOrder, thushadtheypenetratedtowhat wasthen,andisperchanceto-day, aftertheirMissionsareallruined, oneoftheremotestcornersofthe world.

ThemanyfriendsofFatherPat Ryan,whofor17yearsLadcharge oftheBlumbergparish,willregret tohearofhisdeath,whichoccurred recentlyatLewishamHospital,Sydney,conductedbytheNursingSistersoftheLittleCompanyofMary. Hisdeathwasnotunexpected.Only recentlyweannouncedthathewas lyingdangerouslyillatLewisham. The"SouthernCross"saysThe deceasedclergymanwasborn70years agoatRossmore,Co.Tipperary,Ireland.IlemadehisecclesiasticalstudiesfirstatMountMellerayseminary andafterwardsatAllHallows'College.WhenSt.Patrick's,Thurles, becameatheologicalcollege,hewent theretocompletehiscourse,andwas ordainedpriestbyArchbishopLeahy overfortyyearsago.SoonafterwardshecametoNewSouthWales, wherehelabouredformanyyearsin theBathurstandMaitlanddioceses. Theelephantisthelargest,butnot thefiercest,ofwildanimals.andis foundinNorthernIndia,especially inthehillyparts,injungles,andin theforestsofAfrica.Itisvery fondofaater;consequentlyitshome
isbesideswampsandriverbanks.
Theelephant'sgreatestheightis aboutthirty-sixhands;itsgreatest lengthisfifteenfeet.Itiscovered withathickbrownskinscantilycoveredwithhairwhentheelephant liesdownitextendsitshind-legs backwards,justasamandoeswhen hekneels.Theelephant'sfoodconsistsofthetenderbranchesoftrees, herbs,cocoanuts,andvegetaeles;it isveryfondofturnipsandisoften verydestructivedestroyingbanana trees,ricefieldsandsuggrplantations.

Atthemeetinglastweekavery interestinglecturewasdeliveredby Mr.DonaldMurrayon"Proportional Representation.Heexplainedthe presentsystemofvoting,bywhich theminorityoftenhadamajority representation,andthemajoritya
minority,whichunfairnesswasdue tothesystemofvoting,tothehaphazardwayofformingconstituencies,andinsomecasestothefluctuatingoftinpopulation.Undersuch asystem5,000votersmighthave tworepresentativesinParliament, whilst10,000mighthaveonlyone. Nowadayspeoplewerebecomingmore enlightened,wereacquiringafiner senseofjustice,andwerenotlikely toputupverylongwithsuchtreatment.Hysteriawassaidbysonic Germandoctorstohetheoutcome ofsuppressedemotion.Whenhurt,a childnaturallycried,thefather comesalongandfrightensitintosilence,butthepent-upemotionmust ;rt,andifitcannotgetthroughthe naturalchannelssomeoftheorganismsmustnecessarilybecomederanged-perhapsthenervesorbrain. Therewasalsosuchathingasnationalhysteria-emotionsarising fromasenseofjusticeandfairness longsuppressedbyahadsystemof representation,andinflamedbyundergroundengineering,whichwas likelytohappeninParliatnentswhose memberswereelectedundertheselectionballotsystem'.Thisnational hysteriamustfindanoutletorjeopardisethecommunity.Anoutlet wasnowbeingfoundunderthesystemofproportionalvoting,where everyman'svotewillhaveitspropervalue,andeverymangetsomethingforhisvote.Thepreferential systemofvotingwasnotsobad, butconsideringbowconstituencies aredivided,itcouldhappen,andoftendid,thatagreatnumberofthe voterswerenotrepresentedatall. Thissystemnotbeingjust,some otheronehadtohedevisedtomeet allreluirements.Itwentunderthe name"Pro?ortionmlRepresentation." Inthissyetenitheprinciplewaspracticallythesameasintheaforenamed.Buttomakeitworkablethe constituenciesmustheenlargedvery considerably,with,ofcourse,a largernumberofcandidates,sothat thoseofdifferentpoliticalleanings mayhavetheirrepresentativewith agoodhopeofsteeringhimsafeto Padialent. 'nilerthissystem, .12,nacandidatehadsufficientvotes tosecurehiselectionandsome over,theremainderofthevotespolledforhimwenttothesecondchoice, andsoon.Thesystemandplanof working,andatrialballot,willhe illustratedinthegoldfieldspapersin thenearfuture.Thespeakerexhortedhisaudiencetotakeadvantageof thislattermodeofinstruction,and nottoforgettovote.
Theworkingsofthesystemwere graphicallyexplainedbytheillustrationsontheblackboard.
