AmeetingofUseChurchCommitteeweeheldhereonSunday,the 17th,aftertheeleveno'clockMass. Therewasagoodattendance,Mr.J. McAuliffeoccupiedthechairandeon ductedtheaffairsofthemeetingin hisusualbusinesslikemanner.Resides theordinarycommittee-menpresent, therewerealsoinattendanceseveralothergentlemen,takinga praiseworthyinterestinendeavouringtofurthertheworthyobjectof buildingaConventandBoarding SchoolinGoonialling.Thisisanenterprisethatwasfirstmootedabout twelvemonthsago.Sincethenits accomplishmenthasbeendelayed somewhatbyaseriesofunfavourablecircumstances.Neverthelessit hascontinuedtomakesteadyprogress,andafewweeksagotenders wereinvitedforthework.Eight tenderswerereceived.Theobjectof thepresentmeetingwastochoose onefromamongstthese.OnthenotionofMr.J.Williams,secondedby Mr.II.Eatonandcarriedunanimously,thelowest,thatofMrCoombe ofPerth,for£2,160,wasaccepted. Midtheshudderingofsocialeruption,whetherbroughtaboutbyeconomicormoral,internalorexternalcauses,verymuchissometimes lostthatcostagesofthebestintellectandingenuityofourfathersto acquire.TheillustriousLeckyin his"HistoryofRationalism,"says thatwhenweconsiderthecheerful alacritywithwhichpersonsofwealth anddistinctioninformertimesgave upalltheypossessedinlifetobecomehumblemonksandnunsinordertoserveGodandfellow-manin amoreperfectmanner,thereisnodenyingthefactthatwehavelost something.Thematerialisticwhirlwindofthepresentday,theblasts andviledustandhowlingsofwhich arebeingfeltineveryland,and whichissweepingwithitsomeofour bestmenofgenius,hassowarped andbrokentheidealsandbeliefsof ourfathers,thatthebestartswith thecelestialideasthatlaybehind themarefastdecaying.Thepainter nolongerliftshismindtoHeaven, seekingforhissubjectsomeperson whosefacebeamswithpurityand peacebutcontentshimselfwiththe every-daythis-worldbeautythattoo oftenhears

Thewriterlikewiseapplieshimself towhatwillmostpleasehisreaders,sacrificingtruthtopanderto thepeople'spassions,andasaconsequencetheliteratureoftheworld istrulydecadent.Everycountry andpeopleexperiencethechange;and ifprecautionsarenottaken,Irishmenwillhenoexceptiontotherule.

Tocopewiththescourgeofevil literatureandpreservethemorality ofthepeople;tofosteratruespirit ofnationalityamongthemandto havethemdevelopthemselvesand IrelandaccordingtoIrishandnotto EnglishorContinentalideas,are amongtheobjectsoftheGaelicLeague,andnoobjectscouldhemore praiseworthy..1sameanstothis end,theLeagueisstrivingforthe preservationoftheirlanguage,literatureandtraditionsandthecultivationofamodernliteratureinIrish. Sinceitsfoundationin1893themembershavepersistentlylahouredfor theseideals,and,sacrificingmuch, haveovercomethegreatestdifficulties.

Themovementis,indeed,amoral movement,a('hristianmovement,a literaryandintellectualmovement,a nationalmovement,endalsoaneconomicmovement.

Thepresent-dayfilthyliteratureof England,overflowingwith DiabolicalBlasphemyandImmorality isdailyfloodingIrelandtoberead bybothculturedandignorantand tobeabsorbedbythetender,innocentmindsoftheIrishyouth.The youthofto-daywillhethemenand womenofto-morrow,andthereisno denyingthetruthofthemaxim "Asthetwigisbentthetreeisinclined."Notwithstandingcenturies ofmisgovernment,penallaws,brutallandlordism,andthesavagewars thatragedfromtimetotimeasa consequence,theIrishpeoplehave fromthetimeofSt.Patrickdown tothepresentday,soclungtothe teachingsofChristianitythatthe honestyoftheirimmenandthemodestyoftheirmaidenshavelongsince becomerroverbial.Asthedark cloudwhichfedthedelugeanddestroyedallhetNoahintheArk, therehangsoverIrelandacloudof evilliteretereblackwiththeevil thonehtandimmoralityofEngland andtinContinent.Havingbeengatheringanddrippingforageneration ortwopast,ithasnowcommenced topourforthandfloodthecountry w!thitsdestr.leti7econtents.
