Underthisheadingthefollowing articleappearedintheMaynumber of"ExtensionMagazine,"andwas awardedthefirstprizeofferedfor shortlettersonthesubject.Itisfull ofsplendidthoughtonasubjectthat causesmuchanxietytomanyayoung woman.

Toholdahusband'saffectionis comparativelyeasy.Tosomewomen,indeed,itmayhaveprovena task,butthereasonsfortheirinabilityarenotdifficulttodiscover. Toomanygirlshavechangedradicallyinthelastdecade.Theyexpect toomuch.Thehoneymoonisscarcelypassedbeforetheywanttheirown home,oraiiano,oramaid,exeensivedressesandhatsandthingsbeyondwhattheaveragehusbandcoin afford.Itmustbeapparenttothose interestedinahappyhomethat somesacrificemustbemade,and someeconomypracticedearlyinmarriedlife.Thegirlwhohashadsome trainingorexperienceisfortunate, andmostofushaveorshouldhive had.('otpnarativelyfewgirlsare rearedinplenty,and fewerstillmarryina'fluence.Mostmenmust maketheirownwayin lifehencetheimportanceofknowingwhat todo.

ThecapitalofArgentinaisinno senseaniggardlycity.Thetastesof itsprivateinhabitantsarewontto rivalthoseofitsmunicipality,Itis atownofluxuries,butthecostof themanyattractionswhichitprovideshasincreasedinproportionto thegrowthofthecity.Thepaper dollar(ls9d)standsfortheequivalentofashilling,butthepurchasingpowerofthislattercoininAustraliaconsiderablyexceedsthatof itsequivalentinArgentina.Nevertheless,owingtoaplentifulsupply ofthesepaperdollars,thecostof livingseemsamatterofcomparative indifferencetothemajorityofthe townsmen.

InBuenosAiresaninfiniteamountofattentionisdevotedtothe innernumOnemay,partakeofalmosteveryknownEuropeandishtosaynothingofthenativeoneswithinthelengthofasingleblock. TheRestaurantCharpentler,the "Sportsman,"andMonsch'sRestaurant,areamongthemostpopular ofthebetterclassestablishments.

AnotherfactorIregardasdetrimentaltothecauseofchurchmusicisthatofhavingaconductoras wellasanorganist.Choirsthatcontinuallyrelyuponthebatonbecome inthecourseoftimelikesomany automatons.Trythemonthesimplestmusicwithoutthebaton,and theyimmediatelyfalltopieces.Again,intoomanychurchesmoneyis frittedawayuponorganist,conductor,andleadingsingers,which,if amalgamated,wouldmakeasalary largeenoughtoattractacultured andawell-schooledmusician.By thismeanstheleadingchurches wouldbeableto"blazethetrack," forotherstofollow.Reformsmust comefromthefountainhead. NoonedeniesthatsincetheadventofChristianitytheCatholic Churchhastakenaleadingpartin thedevelopmentofmusic.Uptothe timeofthe,greatbreakbetweenEast andWest,theWesternChurch'nits musicwasinfluencedtoagreatextentbytheEasternChurch.During thisperiodseveralofthePopeswere Greelfs,whowouldundoubtedlyhave aleaningtowardsthosemusical formswithwhichtheywerefamiliar. Itwasafterthegreatschismthat theWesternChurchforgedahead,and forcenturiesitsmusicalleadwas maint4nedandneverseriouslychalleneeduntiltheadventofPurcell, BachandHandel.Tobringthis sketchdowntorecentyears,what dowefind?TheChurchpossessinga greatamountofmagnificentworks, thegreaternumberofwhichwillonly heheardinthecoursectyears onconcertplatformsassecredoratorios.Thusexcellentworksereat onefellswooplosttotheChurch, musicwrittenspeciallyforit.
