amanfortransformingthetruculent tostickingdoves!ThatanIrishNationalistshouldrepresentBelfastis commentaryenough.Probablyhalf hisvotersare"agin"hispolitics, buttheyareneverallowedtotind thatout.WhenJoe'sdeliciousbrogueandingratiatingsmileandhoneyedphrasesgetgoingincombination, itisnottheslightestuseforahearertocallhimselfanopponent.What Joesays,hishearersbelieve-they simplyhaveto;andsorichisthe brogueandsofar-reachingthesmile, andsolastingthehoneyflavour, 'hattheyallkeepeffectuntilthe e7ictionisover,andJoesafelydepositedwithinthatcircleofwhichhe issuchaprizedpossession.Butthere wasoneoccasion!-'11r.Devlinlives totellstoriesagainsthimself,and onthatsanteburningquestionwhich wastouchedonamomentagohehas somethingtosay.Itwasatatime whenwomansuffragereallyseemed toheonthevergeofrealisation. Memberseverywherewerewobblinc, andthroughoutEnglishconstituenciescandidateswerebusyexplaining howthoroughlytheywereinaccord withwomen'saims,"butthetime notbeingyetripe,"etc.Mr.Devlin wasmakingaspeechinhisconstituencyafteranextendedabsence,and .vas,liketherest,infectedwiththe revailinegerm.(Hehas,onesadly fears,noverysoundviewsonfeminism;hutnomatter,wemustdissemble.)"Myspeechwasgoingbeautifully,"nerratesMr.Devlin,"and thenIthoughtittimetogetonto theticklishsubject.Ttoldthemas adroitlyasIcouldwhyIwasnot exactlyanadvocateforthewoman's votebutlateron,everythingbeing clearedupandallgoingwell,there wasnoreasonwhyTshouldn'ttake itne-infact,itwasjustaslikely asnotI'dheheadingtheWoman's FreedomLeagueprocessions,or treakineawindowinBond-street, ominoussilence!Isatdown.Then neofmymostprominentsunporters rot andsaidthatifthee*were thehindofviewsMr.Devlinhadde-

veloped,itwastimetheylookedout anothermanforBelfast.Analmost unanimous'Sosayweall'sentchills downmyspine,andIcouldn'tgetup quickenoughtoexplainthatmy, wordshadbeenentirelymisunderstood.Inearlylosttheelectionover that,"addedMr.Devlin,withLis besttwinkle,"sonowdon'ttryto pervertmeagain,justasI'mliving thethingdown."Towhichtheonly fittingreplywasthatamanwho couldrepresentBelfast,was,likeVoltaire'sIlabbakuk,"capabledetout."

OfaverydifferentmouldisT.P. O'Connor.Thereisnosuggestionof themartyrorofthedevoteeabout thisoldcampaigner.Hisaspectdeclareshimjusttheshrewd,skilful, daringstrategistheis-amanofutility,amanforatightplace,aman whocansayorwritejustwhatis santed,intheneatestpossibleway.

11r.O'Connorisoneofthegroup's notabilitieswhohasnotvisitedAustralia,andtoberemindedofthis makeshimverysad-onouraccount.

ThattheIrishpeoplewilldotheir dutybythePartytherecanbeno doubt,Intheletterenclosinghis subscriptiontotheFund,theBishopofKMalesumsupthesituation inweightyandeloquentwords.His Lordshipsays:-

Acorrespondentofthe"Irish News,"theonlyNationalistdailypaperinUlster,inaveryinteresting article,pointsoutsomeofthedifficultieswhichwouldconfrontLord Londonderryandhisfriendsifthey setupaProvisionalGovernmentin "Ulster."Ilesays:-

"Letusassumeforamoment thatthe'BilloftheBetterGovernmentofIreland'hasbecomethelaw oftheland,andthatthethreatened 'ProvisionalGovernment'hasbeen proclaimedbyLordLondonderryand hisCouncilofFive.

Althoughoneisquitesafeingeneralisingonthepeopleofthese SouthAmericancountries,itmustbe admittedthatinotherrespectsSouth Americaispre-eminentlyacountry whichonecannottreatasawhole. EveryoneoftheelevenRepublics, smallandinsignificantassomeof themare,hasitsownindividuality, anditsownhistoryanddevelopment.Itispeculiarlyacountryof lightsandshadows.Anobserveris temptedtomakehispicturetoo brightortoodarkaccordingtohis ownpersonalequation,orperhaps accordingtothesectionofthecontinenthevisits.

Sometravellershavemadethe wildestclaimsforSouthAmerica-on theotherhandithasbeenpaintedin colourssodarkthataIlottentot wouldheashamedtoownitashis abode.Forinstance,arecentwriter onEcuadordescribesitasanearthlyParadise,undisturbedbyanydeceitfulserpent.Everythingisperfect,andeventhehensaresuch prolificlayersthat"theownershave togivethemmedicinetopreventan over-productionofeggs."Andagain, magazinearticleshaveappeared fromtimetotimeontheArgentine andBrazilwritteninthemostluridstyle,describingtheirweaknessesandmistakesandmakingnomentionoftheirwonderfulprogress. Sucharticlesdeceiveonlythosewho areignorantofSouthAmericanaffairs.

ThemembersofSt.Patrick's Branchareco-operatingwiththeladiesintheirearnestendeavourto malfethemeetingsmoreenjoyable, andhavegenerouslydonatedasum ofmoneytowardsthatobject.

SometimeagotheBazaarCommitteeresolvedtorunaseriesof pictureshowsasapreparationfor theBazaar.Thesecondshowwas givenonWednesdaynight,andthe programmesubmittedgaveentiresatisfaction.Thecrowdwasnotlarge, butyetsufficienttogivetheCommitteeencouragementtotryagain. Manyeffortshavebeenmadetorun picturesintheMidlandTownHall, hututothepresentfinancialdisasterhasbeentheresult.Itseems asiftheMidlandpeopleareopposed tolocalenterpriseorhaveaprejudiceagainstWeirownhall.However,theCatholicsaredeterminedto givetheventureafairtrial,andit willbeagreatcredittothemifthey canslimedwheresomanyothers havefailed.
