Themissiontowhichtheresidents ofthelittleSouth-Westerntownship ofNannuphavebeenlookingforwardforsometime,commencedwith Holy!Hassat10.30onSunday,.June 22,whenFatherO'Donnell,Superior oftheRedemptoristOrder,announcedthatMasswouldhecelebrated eachmorningofMonday,Tuesday, andWednesday,at8o'clock,tobe followedbyashortinstruction.Each eveningtht'reweretherecitalofthe Rosary,thesingingofahymnby thechoir,andasermon.Everyone wasaskedtoputuppatientlywith soniclittleinconvenienceforthefew days,andthemissionermadeapowerfulappealtothepeopletoattend themission,bringingbeforethemthe dangersofbushlife,theuncertainty oflife'stenure,andtheuselessnessof devotingallone'stimeandenergies totheacquiringofwealthorcomfort,attheexpenseofthesoul, Thattheappealwasnotmadein vainwasevidencedbythewayin whichthepeopleattendedthemission,notwithstandingthedrenching rainandheavystateoftheroads. TheVictorianCounciloftheCatholicFederationhasinauguratedaseriesofpublicmeetingsforthepurposeofplacingbeforethepublicCatholicandnon-Catholicalike-the positionofCatholicsundertheexistingsystemofEducationinVictoria. Thesemeetingswillbeheldinthe TownHallsthroughoutthemetropolitanandcountrydistricts,andspeakerswillbedeputedbytheState Counciltospeakonthevarious phasesofthequestion.Thefirstof theserieswasheldattheRichmond TownHallon19thJune. isWorshiptheMayorofRichmondoccupied thechair,andthelargehallwas crowdedtoexcess,manybeingunable toobtainadmittance.Itwasdesiredtoarrangeforanoverflowmeeting,butunfortunatelynoother ballcouldbesecuredatthetime.

Fr,BernardVaughan,speakingon "WhatIsawinParis,"saidhehad justreturnedfromFrance,andthe differencebetweentheimpressions madeuponhimbyhisrecentvisit andthatmadetenyearsagowasso strikingincontrastthatoneresembledthetidegoingout,whilstthe otherwaslikethetidecoiningin, Tenyearsagohefeltpessimisticabouta('atholicFrenchrevival; todayhewasoptimisticaboutit.He wastheretotellhishearersthat('atholicFrancewasnotdead,butasleeponly.Nowshewaswakingup andbestirringherself,resolvedto makegoodherclaimofeldestdaughteroftheChurch.

Fr.Vaughanproceededtotracethe historyoftheanti-CatholicandantiChristianmovementonthepartof theFrenchGovernmentduringthe pasttwelveyears,involvingthebanishmentofallreligiouscommunities whichrefusedtoaskforauthorisationundertheAssociationBill,followedbytherefusalofM.Comboto recogniseeventhosecommunities whichdiddeigntoaskforauthorisation.In1909M.Combesmadeithis proudboastthat,inconsequenceof the SuppressionofReligioushouses hehadbeenablehimselftoclose 20,000Catholicschools.Itlookedas iftheChurchweretobestarvedto death,asif,bytheclosingofthe schools,allsupplytotheChurch wastobecutoff,andbytheclosingoftheseminariesallsupply,to thesanctuaryweretobestopped,for itwouldheimpossibletosupply theChurchandthesanctuaryifthe educationoftheCatholiclaitywere tobestopped,andthatoftheclergy prohibited.RepublicanFrance,with itsmissiontode-Christianisethe country,seemedtriumphantallalong theline.ButtheFrenchGovernment wasnottobesatisfiedevenwith thesedrasticmeasuresforthesuppressionofreligion.Therewasanotherlivewiretocutoff,andM. Briand,withhisSeparationBillin 1905,couldtriumphantlyproclaimto hisMasonicfollowersthat BetweenRomeandParis,Betweenthe VaticanandtheElysee,allOfficial CommunicationhadCeased.

Thisparishof50,000soulswas teemingwitheverykindofphysical, social,mental,andmoralenterprise forthethoroughequipmentofaCatholicfreecitizen.Thentherewas thewonderfulworkoftheAssociationCatholiquedelaJeunesseFrancaise(theCatholicAssociationof Frenchyouth).Itwasanon-politicalreligioussociety,withsocial worktodo.Ithad150,000members, allunderthirtyyearsofage,andbelongingtoeverysectionoftheCatholiccommunity.Thissocietywas expandingfromParistothefurthest endsofthecountry. AlreadytheyhadTokensEverywhere ofCatholicRevival.

therechurchesemptyingsomehad beenconvertedintomansionsforthe rich,while NitaFewChapelshadbeenChanged latePictureTheatresorMusic-halls. Nopainshadbeenspared,andevery devicehadbeensought,tomakethe churchesandchapelsofthepeople divertingandattractive,butthe spellhadnotworked.Thechurches wereasempty,ofworshippersasnurseriesoffashionablefiatswereof children.ReferringtoLiverpool, withitsincreaseofpopulationof 45,000duringthepastdecade,heaskedhowmanynewworshipperstothe churcheshadthatincreasebrought? Ithadbroughtashrinkage,andbut fortheCatholiccontributiontheactualfallingoffinthechurch-going peopleofLiverpoolwouldamounttodaytomorethan20,000.

IntheSouthofEnsandReligion wasaGreaterFailureStiff. NeverweretheAnglicanclergyso splendidlyzealousandself-sacrificing asto-day,butneverwasthenonCatholiccommunitysoindifferent andapathetictotheappealthatwas beingmadetothem.Theyweregettingdeaftoallsoundsbuttothose tellingthemofthetwoperformances nightlyatthelocalhippodromeor thepictureshow.

Thechangeofmentalitywhichwas makingitselfnoticedintheeliteof thinkingmen,andespeciallyofyoungermen,wasfullofsignificance.It wasnowbeingprettygenerallyrecognisedthatscience,whichRenan stakedhislifewouldtaketheplice ofCatholicisminFrance,hadsigned itsowndeathwarrantasacandidatetoreplaceinman'sheartGod theAlmighty,theUltimate,andAbsolute. Nowthepriest,insteadofbeing tetheredtothesacristy,wasleading andguidingsocialandeconomic movements.Priestsandpeoplewere gettingclosertoeachother,understandingeachother,gettingtoknow thateachhadsomethingtheother hadnot,andwerehelpingtobuild upaCatholiccountry.Itwasgood tolookacrosstheChannelandsee Francereviving,comingbacktothe oldfaith,andbeingliftedup,and tofeelthatGodwastohaveHis ownafterall.

iLenitwasthat,forthefirsttime forahundredyears,theCatholic ChurchinFrancewassetfree.Till thenshe%%assomethinglikeaslave chainedtothewheelsoftheState Chariot.Nowthechainwassnapped bytheintroductionoftheSeparationBill..Theverythingneededfor the('hurchwasdonebyherenemies. Shewasrobbedofherchurches,robbedofherpalacesandpresbyteries, ro'thedofherseminariesandofher schools,robbedofeverything.But shewonherfreedom,and,whatwas More,shebegantomakemostsplendiduseofit.BeforetheSeparation Lawtherewasinthe38parishesof Parisonlyonepriestforevery5,000 people.Sincetheropewascutand tieChurchlaunchedintothewaters, whereshetookherownway,the ArchbishopofParis,CardinalAinette with"byyourleave"tonoone, hadopenedfifty-fournewplacesof worshipinandaboutParis,ofwhich twenty-fourwerenewparishes.Inanotherfive,ortenyearsatmost, thisgreatChurchmanwouldhaveestablishedasmanymorecentresof CatholicwarshipvndofCatholicactivityandenterprise.

TheLiteraryandDebatingSociety latelyformedbyArchdeaconSmyth forthemenandboysoftheparish isgoingaheadrapidly.Atevery meetingthenumbersareincreasedby theadditionofseveralnewmembers, andtheideasintroducedaremost original.OnWednesdayweekevery memberhadeithertocontribute someitemtotheevening'sprogrammeorpayafineofthreepence. Itwasmostsatisfactorytonote hoefewhadtobecalledontopay thefine.Thetalestoldbytheboys werehighlyamusing,andthehumorousanecdotesandwittysalliesof theyouthskeptthewholecrowdin highspirits,andhelpedtobanish thereticencethathadbeenprevalent amongthemorebashfulmembersof theSociety.Severalsongswerecontributed,andtheboysshowedtheir appreciationoftherecitationsrenderedbyloudandheartyhandclapping.

AccordingtoreliableinformationI havereceived,'astartwillsoonbe madewiththeerectionofthelocal ('onventbuilding.Aspecialmeeting ofthe(7onimitteawasheldonJune 23rdtoconsiderthematter.Mr. Henderson,architect,ofPerth,was presentatthemeetingbyarran4enient.Severalplansweresubmittedandexplainedbyhim.Bya unanimousvotetheCommitteedecidedtoacceptoneoftheseplans,and instructedMr.Hendersontomake allnecessaryarrangementstohave tenderscalledfortheworkassoon aspossible.Thesitesecuredforthe proposedbuildingisanadmirable one,occupyingaboutthree-quarters ofanacreinacentralandelevated partofthetown,neartheChurch, andaboutthreeminutes'walkfrom thePostOfficeandRailwayStation.

WiththeerectionofaConventnot onlywillthegoodSisters,whohave been theseinconvenientlylodgedduring lasttwelvemonths,befurnishedwithproperaccommodation,

butalong-feltwantofthetownand districtwillbesupplied.Manyparentsinthecountrypartsoftheparishandoutofreachofanysuitable educationalinstitutionfortheirchildren,willreadilyavailthemselvesof theadvantagesofferedthembyhavingaConventBoardingSchoolso nearthem,andconductedbysuch capablebandsasarethenunsofthe PresentationOrder.SisterAlphonsusarrivedherefromGeraldtonlast Monday(30thult.).Anadditionto thestaffoftheConventwasbadly needed,astheworkwasfartoo muchfortwoSisterstocopewith, nomatterhowdevoted.

Afterthelastgeneralelectionhe waschosenastheSpeakerofthe S.A.Assembly.Thevariouspolitical honoursthathavecrownedhisdistinguishedpubliccareerhaveinno wayalteredthegenial"Larry"-as heisheatknowntohishostsof friendsinthesisterState,andto hismanyfriendsinWestAustralia.
