Nooneprivilegedtobepresentat thecelebrationsatSt.Mary'sCathedraliseverlikelytoforgetthe wonderfulscenesofenthusiasmwhich accompaniedthelayingofthelast twofoundationstonesofAustralia's motherchurch(saysthe"Catholic Press").Itwasoneofthosegreat occasionstowhichourCatholic peoplearisesonobly,andwhich havefilledvisitorswithsomuchastonishmentandadmirationforthe vigourofthefaithwhichthedevotedexilesofIrelandhaveplantedin thisyoungnation,St.Mary'shas badmightythrongsofrejoicingpeoplesurroundingitbefore,butnever perhapswasthespiritofthegatheringmorebrilliantlyproud,morebrilliantlyhappy-forhereatlastwas theendofacenturyofworkinsight -forherewasagenerationcompletingwithbrightandconfidenthearts thelabouroflovewhichtheirforefathershadbegunwithtears.Itwas ageneration,trio,whici:hadbeen faithfultoitstraditions-whichhad neverfalteredtoitsallegiancetoits splendidfaith,andwhichhadcarried outwithallthedevotionoffilial sonsthedearwishesofthoseloving andillustriouspastorswhomGod hadsetoverthem.Anditwastheir pleasuretorecallatthecloseofthat dayofwonderfulfaithandwonderful generositythatnoneofthemany splendidtriumphsofthepasthad eclipsedtLeirdemonstration.Ilis GracetheArchbishopofSydneyhad everyreasontobeproudofhisflock, andthevisitingprelateswouldcarry awaywiththemglowingmemories ofapeoplethatwasworthyofits CathedralandaCathedralthatwas worthyofitspeople.
RarelyhavethebellsofSt.Mary's sentoutsuchajoyouspealasthey didduringthehalf-hourthatprecededthecommencementofthePontificalHighMassat10.30.TheCathedralwascrowdedfromthe10 o'clockMass,andmostofthosepresentatthatremained,andtheir numberswereaddedtobyhundreds andhundredsofothers,hardlya parishinthemetropolisbeingunrepresented.Everyseatandsparein nave,aisleandtranseptwereoccupied. TheStateGovernor(SirGerald Strickland),attendedbyGenend Finn,A.D.('.,andCaptainTalbon, A.D.('.,arrivedatSt.Mary'sat 10.20,andwasescortedtoaseaton thesanctuary.
Tbeecclesiasticalprocessionwas
fromwhichthesewordsaretaken,he wasanexile.Ilehadtoflyfrom theinsanejealousyandfuryofKing Saul.Butinhisexile,andinthe midstoftheprivationshehadtoendure,hisheartturnedtotheArkof theCovenantandtothetreasuresit contained.Thesetreasureswerevaluablechieflyasmemorialsofthe past,andaspropheciesofthefuture treasuresoftheChurchofChriston earth. Thearkcontainedaportionofthe mannawithwhichtheIsraeliteswell, miraculouslyfedinthedesert,and symbolisedtheProvidenceofGodin feedingHispeople,bothwithcorporalfoodandwiththatbreadwhich camedownfromheaven,andof whichifanymaneatheshalllive forever.italsocontainedthetwo
religiousblessingswhichweredenied tothem.AsSolomon,thesonof David,builtamagnificenttemple toreceivethesymbolicArkofthe Covenant,sodidthoseIrishexiles ataveryearlyperiodundertaketo buildatemplewhichseemedunduly largeandambitioustothosewho didnotunderstandwhatitwasintendedtocontain.Thatchurch,as youareaware,whichwasbuiltby theindefatigablelaboursofFather Therry,lastedfor29years.On.1one 29,1865,itwasconsumedbyfire. GreatwasthegriefoftheVenerable ArchbishopPoldinggreatalsowas thegriefoftheclergyandpeople.
AllthingsWorkforflood.
ButforthosewholoveGodall thingsworktogetherforgood.If thataccidenthadnothappened,the oldCathedral,imposingandcherished itsitwasinitsday,inightprobablyhaveremaineduptothepresent, asaveryimperfectexpressionofthe marvellousgrowthofreligioninthe meantimeinthisStateofNewSouth Wales.Somesimilarhappyinisfortune-felixculpa-occurredinconnectionwiththebuildingofSt.Patrick'sCathedralinMelbourne.Three yearsafterthedestructionofthe oldCathedral,onDecember8,1868, tl.efoundationsofthepresentCathedralwerelaidbyArchbishop Poldingwiththecordialandgenerousco-operationofthecitizensof Sydney,withoutdistinctionofnationalityordenomination.
St.Mary'swasthecentretowards whichSydneywastroopingfroman earlyhour.Forthewholedaywas tobegivenovertothecelebration, andnoonedesiredtomisstheHigh Massinthemorning,northegreat ceremonythatclosedtheafternoon, whentheArchbishopsofSydneyand Melbourne,inthepresenceoftheGovernoroftheState,andprelatesand priestsfromallpartsofAustralia, vndsurroundedbyamightygatherng,laidthosefoundationstones bich:narkthefinalstagesofthe workbegun92yearsagobyFather Therry.TheCathedralinthemorningwasthrongeduntiltheoverflow spreadfaroutintothestreets,and soitwasthatintheafternoonall trafficwasstoppedbeforethegreat Cathedralbythethousandswhohad beenunabletoenterthepacked grounds.Againwewouldsaythat Sydneyhasneverseenamoretriwaphantgatheringorceremonies morebrilliant,althoughSt.Mary's hasalreadycontributedsomegloricuspagestoCatholicLictory.And whentheshadesofeveningcameand thehappyandexultantthrongsturnedhomewardsitwasfeltbyallthat perhapsthelaststageofthebuildingofthestatelylanewouldbethe mostbrilliantofthemall.Andit Wasfeltaswellthatitwashis GracetheArchbishopofSydney's mostgoldenday-onlyto,hesurpassedwhen.withtheblessingofProvidence,berealiseshisdreamofplacingthelastcrossonthecompleted spiresofthemotherchurchofthe CommonwealthofAustralia.

TLoughthereweretheusuallarge coneregationsattheearlyMassesat St.Mary's,theCathedralwas filledtooverflowingforthePontificalHighMass,duringwhicha specialLowMasswascelebratedat oreofthealtarsoftheSacredllea:'t fortheconvenienceofthosewhoacre usabletoreTnainsntiltheendofthe ceremonies.

IlisGracetookforhistextthe 24thPsalm"Lord,Ihavelovedthe beautyofThyhouse,andtheplace whereThyglorydwelleth."Hesaid: Itismyprivilegeto-daynotto preachaformalsermon,buttocongratulateyou,andtoencourageyou intheworktowhichyouhaveset yourhands,namely,thecompletion ofSt.Mary'shistoricandqueenly Cathedral.Congratulation,indeed,is appropriate,butthereisnotmuch needofencouragement,foreveryone ofyou,Iainpersuaded,isimbued withthespiritandthelongingof thepsalmistwhenheutteredthe wordsIhavequoted"Lord,Ihave lovedthebeautyofThyhouseand theplacewhereThyglorydwelleth." tablesofthelawwrittenbythelingerofGod,whichforeshadowedthe infallibleteachingoftheChurchof Christ.Initwasalsoatonetime therodofAaron,whichsignifiedthe jurisdictionanddirectivepowerof theChristianChurch.

Butthoughthearkwasonlya shadowandpromiseofbetterthnags toberealisedinthenewlaw,still Davidregardeditasthegreatestof theprivationsofhisexilethathe wasdeprivedoftheopportunityof takingpartintheworshipofGod inthepresenceofthearkandits mercyseat.WhenDavidbecame KingofIsraeltherewasnothinghe desiredmorethantobuildaspacioustempleasaworthydwellingplacefortheArkoftheCovenant.
Thereisnomorethrillingincident intheearlyecclesiasticalhistoryof Australiathanthelovingworship whichtheexilesofErinofferedbeforethetruetabernacleofGodwith men,aslongasitremainedinMr. Davis'house,andtheardentdesire theyfelttobuildanobletemplein whichtheirchildrenmightenjoythe
TheArchbishopofSydney, said"Ninety-twoyearsagoacongregationwasgatheredonthisspot tobeginthefirstSt.Mary's.(in thatdaythereassembledtheCatholicsofSydneyunderFatherTherry. withmanynon-Catholics,andthe ceremonieswerepresidedoverbythe Governoroftheday.Thisafternoon,afterthelapseofalmosta century,Iamtorequestthepres?nt StateGovernor,andtherepresentativeofhisBritannicMajesty,topresideoverthismeeting.Shouldwe notrejoiceontheoccasion?Certainly.Why?Becausewearerational beingswehaveatimeonearthand aneternityhereafter.Now,thepresentCathedral,thesuccessorofthe churcLthatwilecommenced92fears ago,isthefountainwhenceallthe streamsofhappinessnecessaryfor ourearthlypilgrimagewillflow-it isthehomeofoursoulswhilewe liveonearth,anditrepresentsfor usoureternalhomeinParadise.
Yee,thepastoralstaffandtheepiscopalmitrerepresentthenecessity ofsupplyingthespiritualwantsof everyman.Thecrownandthesceptrerepresentforuspeaceandorder insociety,andassembledhereunder thechairmanshipofSirGerald Strickland,therepresentativeof KingGeorgeV.,weareupholding thegreatprinciplebywhichwemay hopetobringtopassthefulfilment ofthemotto,'AdvanceAustralia.'"
SirGeraldStrickland, saidhefeltgratefultoProvidencein beingassociatedwithhisfellowCatholicsofSydneyonthatoccasion. Hecongratulatedthewholeofthe peopleofSydneyonthedeterminationofArchbishopKellytoenter atoncewithenergyanddespatchon thecompletionofthatinagnificmt Cathedral.Thepublicbeildirw.a whichapeopleerectedwerethetestimonyofthespiritofthenation. atestimonythatremainedfromvenerationtogeneration,anditwasa grandthinginayoungcountryto haveanarchitecturalmonument whichwouldbeindicativetofuture generationsoftheenergyofthose wholivedatthepresentmoment.,It

requiredapostolicspirit-itrequired theheartofaliontoundertaketo collectthefundsnecessary,andto meetthedifficultiesincidentalto placingtheedificeinwhichtheywere toworshipGodinthiscommunity onastandardwhichwouldbean honourtothemselvesandtoposterity.
PremierW.A.Heiman, said"Itisagreatoccasion,not merelyinthehistoryoftheCatholic body,butinthehistoryofChristendomintheSouthernHemisphere, thatwearecalledtogethertocelebrateto-day.Thisgreatbuilding mustberegardedbyallofusasan effortofthegreatbodyofCatholic1E111whichexistsandflourisheswith somuchvigourandsomuchlife throughoutAustraliaatthismoment.Thishasbeenthecentrefront whichhasradiatedthespiritualand thereligiousinfluencesofwhatis theoldestformofChristianity,and ehatisinAustraliaoneofthe strongestandmostvigorouslyfruitfulformsofChristianityinour midst.And,speakingasthefirst oneto-daywhohashadthehonour ofaddressingthisvastgathering whoisnothimselfamemberofthat communion,Iventureonbehalfof mybrother-ChristianswhoareoutsidethepaleoftheCatholicChurch inAustraliatooffertoymosthearty congratulations,toysincereand heartfeltgoodwishestotheCatholicsofSydneyinthegreatwork whichtheyareputtingtheirhands tothisday.Ifeelthattheimmense servicedonebytheChurchtoAustraliafrontthepointofviewofthe ornamentationofourcitiesisaservicewhichthoseofuswhodonot belongtoitmightwelltakethis occasiontogratefullyacknowledge.
ThecathedralsofSydneyandMelbeernearethemostnobleedificesin Australia,andthisgreatfanewhen co,opletedwillprobablystandwithoutrivaletnenest
TheArchitecturalTriumphsofthe SouthernWorld, Theinfluenceofagreatartisticwork likethisisinnowayconfinedto thesewhoenjoytheprivilegeofworshippingattheshrineitshelters. Thesethrillingnarratives,working upontheenthusiasticfervotrandromanticspiritwhichhadsprungup withtheCrusades,preparedthepopularmindforanintense,innocent enjoyetientoftheScripturalscenes andcharacters,aspresentedonthe stagebythepiousdramatists,with alltherichdiversityofcharacter, costume,andscenerypeculiartothe peoplesandcountriesoftheEast. Atthesametime,theCorpusChristi Festivalgaveanimpulsetoprocessionsandsplendidpageantsforthe purposeofinspiringduehonourand venerationforthecentraldoctrineof theFaith.Hence,atthebeginning ofthefourteenthcentury,cyclesof plays,andCorpusChristiprocessions,weretohefoundineverypart ofEngland.Withoutdoubt,themiracleplayswereamongthefirst worksofanynotewritteninthe Englishlanguage.Theheretical WickliffereferredtothePaternosterin theEnglishtongue,"asmenseycn isyeplayofYork."Thecycles,pageants,andprocessionsflourished, andcontinuedtodiffuseinstruction andholyjoyamongstthepeople, untiltheso-called

Inthesixteenthcenturythedrama underwentachange;beingnolongerusedasanafter-pieceofreligiousduties,itsmainobjectbecame thatofpersonalgratification.Yet, itstillderiveditsinspirationand nourishmentfromthestoresofCatholiccultureaccumulatedinthepast expressiveofthenationallifeand characterformedbycenturiesofCatholicFaithandpractice.When, therefore,inthetimeofElizabeth, Shakespearedazzledmankindwith thebrilliancyofhisachievementsin dramaticart,itwasmainlytoa Catholicworldthathewasindebted forhisconceptions.Thisistheview ofShakespeareandhisworkstaken byCarlylein his"Ileroes, IleroWorship-"Insomesense itmay hesaidthatthis gloriousElizabethanErawith itsShakespeare,astheoutcomeand flowerageofallwhichhadpreceded it,isitselfattributabletotheCatholicismoftheMiddleAges.The ChristianFaith,whichwasthetheme ofDante'sSong,hadproducedthis PracticalLifewhichShakespearewas tosing,ForReligionthen,asit nowandalwaysis,wasthesoulof Practicetheprimaryvitalfactin man'slife."Thatthisviewofthe Elizabethandramaisthetrueone, isprovedbythefactthatnothing succeededtoresembleorequalitas timerolledonthedramahastiedined,incommonwiththeother greatartsofarchitecture,sculpture, andpainting,inexactaccordance withthedecayofreligiousfaith broughtaboutbythemuchvaunted Reformation.True,thereisno

LikeaBodywithoutaSoul,Inert, Cold,andLifeless. Thereisnodevotionalfervourto warmitintolife; noenthusiastic faithtofamiliariseitwiththehigherspiritualformsofbeauty.Itbears noshadowofresemblancetothegeniusoftheoldmasters.Anageof vaguespeculation,withitscoldand barrensentimentalism,willnever producesuchpricelessandlasting worksastheirs.
Prejudicedwriters,inwhosehearts hatredofCatholicityhasextinguishedtheloveoftruthandcommon charity,havesoughttodiscreditthe ancientmiracleplaysbydescribing themasdisgustingexhibitionsof buffoonery,destituteofeveryliterary andartistic'merit,andcalculatedto excitecontemptforthemysteriesof religion.Thefollowingfromthepen ofMissLucyToulminSmith,theaccomplishedladywhoeditedtheYork plays,willserveasaneffectiveanswertosuchbigoted,carpingcritics: -"Anopen-mindedperusalofthese playswillbeenoughtorebutthe ignorantsneersthathavebeenmade (hyOliver,Warton,andothers)againsttheearnestnessorthecapacity oftheoriginaldramatistsofthisorder.ttell-readintheBible,especiallyintheNewTestament,andinthe dependentlegendsallowedinthose times,theimaginationofthisauthorhadconsiderableplaywithin hisprescribedlimitsafacileversifier(albeitaidedbytheconventional rulesforhiscrafthandeddownfrom oldtime)hedisplayednotalittle dramaticpowerinthearrangement ofsceneswiththemoansathiscommand(seeespeciallyplayXXV).Observantofhumannatureandsympathetic,hiscallsonthedomesticaffectionsarewellworthnotice,in thewomanlyweaknessofMaryand thebashfulnessofJosephinthe FlightintoEgypt,outragedmotherlyaffectionintheMassacreofthe Innocents,parentaldistressbetween loveanddutyinAbraham'sSacrifice, inthedutifulrelationshipofchildrenshownbyIsaac,andthesonsof Noahand1Pilate.Thefiguresof Maryand.1esusstandoutwithsimplicityanddignity,andinnoway grotesque.Thesefinertouchesstand inrelieftothebrutalityofthe scenesconnectedwiththepassion, whichweredeemednecessarytoheightentheeffectoftheSaviour'ssufferings.Likeatrueartist,thedramatistcalledupmirthoverincidents harmlessenough."Thesetaewriter goesontoquotefromvariousold documents,showingthattheCivic AuthoritiestookthegreatestPride andinterestineverythingconnected withtheplays.Annualexaminations wereheldtotesttheelliciencyof theactors;andspecialpreparations weremadeintheyear1397,when KingRichardII.witnessedtheplay atYork.inaproclamationmade bytheMayorofYork,in1394,it wasordained:-"Thateveryplayer shallhereadyinhispageantatconvenienttime,thatistosay,attrie midhourbetweenfourandfiveof theclockinthemorning."This callsfromtheladythefollowing comment:-"Thepictureofthese goodfolksupathalf-pastfourona summermorningreadytoacttheir partsoneafteranother,remindsus of Ober-Ammergau,inStrungContrast totheModernStage." Furtherproofoftheearnestnessand pietyoftheactorsisfurnished bytheaccountsofthestageprepuitiespossessedbythedifferent'ssillus. Peoplearenotinthehabitoflavishingtheirwealthandhighestskill uponarticlesintendedforthepurposesofbuffoonery.Hence,whenwe finditrecordedthatsimpletradesmenlikethegoldsmithspossessed crownsofpuregold,keptexclusively fortheuseoftheirmemberswhen personatingkings,alsothatthe
Noah'sark,andotherstagereeaisitf.smadebythecarpenters,were ornamentedinthemostintricateand elaboratestyleofcarving,andteat thestagedressesmadebytheweaversandothercrafts,wereofeach richmaterial,andsoskilfullyworked,thatwecanscarcelyrealisetheir valueinthesedaysofshoddyMardi facture,andcheapproductionofEre) cryforpersonaladornment,wemust concludethatthosegoodpeopleof otherdaysshowedaspiritofunselfishandearnestdevotiontoreligionwhichmightwellserveforour modelinthisparticularrespect.

Spanish-AmericanRepublicsaregenerallyvaguelythoughtofelsewhere assmallcountries,withaprimitive civilisationandendlessrevolutions, andwhereallsoldiersare"generals,"allcitizenscarryformidable knivesaspartoftheireveryday dress,anddonothesitatetouse thenionlessthantheslightest,provocation.Andtherehasreallybeen somefoundationforthisview,especiallyamongsomeoftheminor Statesofthatimmense'country.But thereareotherandmorefavourable conditionsexistinginthesecommunitiesconditionswhicharecomparativelylittleknowntotheoutside world,andwhichareworthyofconsideration.
