ScotchCollegeWinsaDouble-OldBoys'ChampionshipwonbyChristianBrothers

TheannualSchools'RowingChampionshipwascontestedontheSwan RiverlastSaturdaymorning,when theconditionswereentirelyfavourable.Aslighteasterlywindblew earlyinthemorning,butby11a.m., whenthechampionshipracewas rowed,ithaddiedaway.Thewater -Wi.,t,rik

ofthechiefeventwasintense.The winoftheScotchCollegeboyswas themorepopularinthatitwas generallyexpectedthattheChristianBrothers'crewwouldbetheir vanquishers,andthecheeringwhich greetedtheirsplendidfinishwas loudandcontinuous.Thebreezewas

officialsforthedaywere:-Patron, hisExcellencytheGovernor,who,as heisnotyetrecoveredfromhis illness,wasnotabletobepresent; judge,TheRightRev.BishopRiley; formprizejudge,Mr.J.H.Gosse; umpire,Mr.C.B.Cox;istarter,Mr. C.R.Pennytimekeeper,Mr.S.B.

starttogether.Priortothatdate heatshadtobecontested.Since1899 thechampionshipwasrowedin W.A.R.C.rowinggigs,andinthethree succeedingyearsthecontestwasrowedinheatsintheW.A.R.C.practice fours.Asstatedabove,however, since;thatperiodeachschoolhas beenthehappypossessorofitsown craft,withbeneficialresults.There wasadelayofoveraquarterofan houringettingthecrewsaway. Theywerestartedfrommooredboats andastheelectoftheschoolslay, paddlesoutreadyforthepreliminarycaution,thereseemedlittleto choosebetweenthefoursetsof youthssofarasweightwasconcerned.Asamatteroffact,theaverageweightwasmuchmoreeventhis yearthanonthedayofthelastcontest,whentheadvantagewaswell infavourofScotchCollege.

Inthelasthundredyardsorso Christiansagainmadeaneffort,but thetaskwasimpossible,andthe crackofthejudge'srevolverheraldedtheadventoftheScotchCollege as"headoftheriver"for1913. Christianswereacoupleoflengths behind,followedbytheGrammar Schoolalmostthreelengthsfurther off,andHighSchoolseverallengths intherear.Time,6min.26pc. Datingasfarbackas1899,theannualtrialofstrength,pluck,skill, andstaminabetweentheelectofthe leadingsecondaryschoolshasgained inimportanceas,theyearshavesped by.Withadueregardtotheimportanceofdevelopingthephysical aswellasthementalconditionsof thelatter-dayschoolboy,thosein authorityhavesparednoeffortto givetotheladsundertheircontrol everyopportunitytoengageinkeen butfriendly,rivalry,whetheritbe onthecricketfieldorinthefootballarena,onthepedestriantrack orintheslenderrowingcraft.That suchacourseissurelybeneficial wasmorethanapparentonSaturday,whensomehalf-hundredlads, clean-limbedandstrong,battledon theriverandceasedtheirendeavours onlywhenthepistol-shottoldits storyofanotherracewonandlost.

Thechampionshipof1913will doubtlessgodowntoposterityand benumberedintheannalsofthe schoolsasperhapsthemost-discussedofalltheraces.Commencing withadiscussionastotheadvisabilityoftheracesbeingdecidedin themorning,andterminatingwith theunfortunatedisputewiththeW.A. RowingAssociationwhich,forreasonswellwithinthepublicknowledge,withhelditspatronage,its adventwasmuchchronicled.Asit transpired,theracewasrowedin idealcircumstances,thewaterbeing onlyslightlyruffledbythelight easterlybreeze.Theattendance, whichitwasarguedwouldbepracticallyconfinedtotheboysand someoftheparents,wasquitegratifying.

Theexcitementduringtheprogress

suchthattheinsideposition,which wasnearesttheMount,carriedwith itverylittle,ifindeedany,advantage,comparedwiththoseinthemore openwater.Theraceswerestarted withaslittledelayaspossible,and thearrangementsleftlittletobedesired.Asaresultofhissplendid judgmentandstyleinstrokingthe scotchCollegefourtovictory,W. J.Hewby,whowasreferredtoas oneofthemostfinishedoarsmen thatinstitutionhpsyetturnedout, wasawardedthetrophyannually presentedbyMr.D.G.Gawler, M.L.('.,forthecompetitorshowing theheatformduringtherace.The

Thecourseineachofthethree racesheldwasamileinlength,the startingpointbeingnearlyopposite ''thequarries,"alongtheMount's Bay-road,andthefinishinglineat theNarrows.

Atameetingwhichwasheldon Sundaynight,abalance-sheetwas submittedbyMrs.Rooneyandthe otherladiesoftheparishwhoreportedasatisfactoryamountofpublicsupportintheirsuccessfulefforts tocaterforthechildrenonSt. Patrick'sDay.Afterdefrayingall expensesasumofCl7s6dremained,whichwasvotedforChurchpurposes.ThefirstEuchrePartyofthe seasoninaidoftheBazaarwasheld attheMaylandsPublicHallonWednesdayevening,whensixvaluable prizeswerecompetedfor.Beginning withto-morrow,theSundayMasses atMaylandswillbeat9onthefirst andthirdSundays,andat10onthe secondandfourth.

Sir,-Wefeelthatyourreaders wouldwishtoknowthefactthat theMonksofCaldey,whoseconversiontotheCatholicChurchhas causedsomuchinterest,havesufferedseverefinanciallossbytheirconscientiousaction. Wehappento knowthattheyhavelostthesum ofnotlessthanC20,000,whichwas promisedtothemfromvariousbenefactorsthisyear,principallyforthe completionoftheirbuildings.

Butthisnaturallymakestheimmediatefinancialpositiononeof muchdifficulty.Itistruethatthere aregoodsecurities,andreasonable hopethatinafewyearstheresourcesoftheislandwillhavedevelopedsoastorenderthecommunityself-supporting.Butforthe nextyearortwotherewillbesome difficulty.

We,therefore,whoknowthefacts, feelthatwemayconfidently,appeal toCatholicstohelpthesegood monksintheirpresentneed.WeproposetoopenatonceaCaldeySustentationFund,andweshallvery gratefullyreceivedonationsandannualsubscriptionsforthisobject.

Thetotalpopulationisabouta millionandaquarter,four-fifthsof whomareinEurope.Intheearly

TheteachersofW.A.generallyare tobecongratulatedontheincreases theyhavereceivedtotheirsalaries thisyear.Thisincreaseshouldbe moreappreciatedwhenitisconsideredthatthepresentstateofthefinancesisnotwhatwewouldcall buoyant.Thecountryhasnowexperiencedtwocomparativelylean years,andthesenecessarilyhave theirevileffectsonbusinessingeneral.Whenthesefactsbetakenintoconsideration,theGovernment's desiresandeffortsto,inameasure, adequatelyrewardtheteachers,at leastsignifythattheyhaveatheart theimportanceofthenatureofa teacher'sduties.Whilewethinkthat thereisgeneralsatisfactioninregardtotheseincreases,wemustalsoadmitthattherearemanyindividualcasesofdisappointment.01 course,aquestionofincreasesmust beconsideredrelatively,andinthis connectiondotheheartburningsshow themselves. Wedonotthink thattheteachersareyetpaidsufficientlyfortheimportanceofthe workwhichtheyperform.TheteachersofW.A.,onthewhole,doyeomanservicetotheState,andwe shallnevertireadVocatingtheir causeuntiltheirpositionsarethoroughlyappreciatedbythecitizens. ThepresentGovernmenthave donewellinmakingacornmenceomentbyawardingtheincreases theyhave.Theyarefacedwithgrave financialdifficulties.Theymaintain, however,thatEducationisthefoundationofthedemocracytheyadvocate,andtheyhaveseizedthefirst opportunitytomaketheprofession moreenticing,toencouragethevery besttalentpossibleforthisall-importantwork.Wearesorrythatthe Department'sofficersdidnotgomore thoroughlyintothequestion,butwe hopethatthosewhohavenotreceivedarelativeincreasewilltoso whentheircasesarebroughtbefore thepowersthathe.

Consideringtheexcellentworkbeing donebytheCatholicsofGuildford toliquidatetheirshareoftheparishdebt,Icannotunderstandwhy theyhaveshownsuchapathytowardstheAltarSociety,whichconferssuchspiritualbenefitsuponits members,andhasdonesomuchin thepasttohavethesacredceremoniescarriedoutinabecoming manner.Iunderstandaneffortis soontobemadetoinduceevery practicalmemberofthecongregationtobecomeamemberalsoof theAltarSociety,butinthemeantimesomethingmustbedonetoremovethepresentdebtandtomake provisionforrequisitesthatmust hesecuredimmediately.Withthat objectinview,thepresentEuchre I'artyhasbeenarranged,andifit receivesfromourpeoplethepatronageitdeserves,itoughttobridge usoverourpresentdifficulties.The ticketsaregoingfairlywell,butso farenoughworkershavenotvolunteeredtowarrantapredictionof greatsuccess.Thetimeisopportune,theprizesarevaluable,the causeisdeserving,andifsuccessis notachievedtheblamewillrestwith theorganisers.

Aspecialmeetingoftheabovesocietywasheldintheirroomson Sundaylast,Mr.c.Duganoccupiedthechair.Mr.Cahillwaswelcomedbacktothesociety,andsuitably responded.'Themembersofthesocietyfeelverykeenlythelossof theirSpiritualDirector,Rev.Fr. PhillipSheridan,whobyhishard workandzealintheinterestofthe societyhasendearedhimselftoevery member.However,wehavehad goodreportsofournewSpiritual Director,Rev.Fr.O'Grady,sowe trustthesolidfoundationslaidby Fr.Sheridanwillbemadeeven strongerby.Fr.O'Grady.OnMandayeveningnext,May5th,Mr. Wrightwilldeliveralectureona veryinterestingsubject,andaeardialinvitationisextendedtothe public.

At4o'clockthesameday,the biggestwedding"breakfast"onrecord,perhapsinAustralia,was givenintheBootenalHall,forit wasattendedbyover150people-a veritablegatheringoftheclans.The usualtoastswerehonoured,andthe happypairweretherecipientsofthe heartygoodwishesoftheirfriends fortheirfuturehappiness. 4.

TheMayorandMayoressofNarrogin(Mr.andMrs.M.Brown),gave an"AtHome"danceintheTown Halllastweek,ontheoccasionofthe Coiningofageoftheireldestson (John).Thefunctionwasavery brilliantone,andpassedoffina very,enjoyablemanner.Fully200 guestsrespondedtotheinvitationto hepresent,anddancingwasindulged inuntil3a.m..Thehallwasvery prettilydecorated,asalsowasthe stage,whereaverydaintysupper waslaid.Themanyguestsexpressedthemselvesdelightedwiththeevening,andcongratulationswere showeredonMr.JohnBrownonthe occasionofhisattainmenttoman's estate.Thefunctionalsoaervedasa continuationofthenuptialcelebrationsofMissK.Brown,whowas marriedearlyin,theafternointo Mr.P.Doyle,ofWilliams.Dainty musicwassuppliedforthedarters byMr.F.W.Spargo.

Averyenjoyableandhighlysuccessfulsocialanddancewasheldin theStadium,Kellerberrin,onWednesday,April23rd,theoccasionbeingthedrawingofprizesinconnectionwiththeArtUnioninaidof theCatholicPresbytery.Theevent waswellpatronised,andwasundoubtedlypopular,astheverybest localtalentcontributed.MissSinclairpresidedatthepiano,andcontributedthedancemusicaswellas mostoftheaccompaniments.The vocalitemswererenderedbyMisses McLeish,MottandJones,andMessrs.Caddy,andBurton,whilstMr. Gatherer(banjo),andMessrs.Smith andBartington(mandolin)rendered ahighlyappreciateditem. Thetwenty-fifthanniversaryofthe elevationtotheEpiscopateofJohn O'Reily,ArchbishopofAdelaide,is aneventthatcouldnotbutrecallto hisoldfriendsinWesternAustralia reminiscencesofthattrulygreatbut humbleman,thewholecourseof whosepriestlycareer,someseventeenyears,wasrunamongus,and whowonforhimselfduringthattimd theloveortheesteemofeveryone ofwhateverdenominationwhohad theprivilegeofhisacquaintance. Andtheywerelegion,for,themost unassumingofmen,FatherO'Reily wasasaccessibletothelowestas tothehighestintheland.Gifted naturally,andwithabilityfar abovetheaverageoftheeducated classes,hewasyetasunaffectedas achild;forhisintellectualequipmentwasofthatorderwhichenabledhim,asfromsomevantage ground,totakeasurveyofthe realmsofknowledgehehadexplored,and,vastastheywere,tosee neverthelessthepracticallyillimitableexpansebeyondthathecould neverhopetoenter.

ASpecialTalentforMusic mustbenumberedamongouroldtimeSoggarth'smany-accomplishments.Interalia,thisembraced singingatsightandathorough masteryofcounterpoint.IrememberwithwhatenthusiasmMr.G.T. Skaife,intheearly'eightiesorganistofSt.John'sAnglicanChurch, Fremantle,usedtoexpatiateonhis reverence'sknowledgeofharmony, aswellasonthegenerousinterest hetook-althoughMr.Skaifemight thenhavebeencalledaprofessional man-inthisyoungorganist'smusicaleducationbygroundinghimin theprinciplesofharmonyandmusicalcomposition.Ihaveavividrecollectiontooofanincidentconnectedwithavisitmadebythegood FathertoGoulburn,N.S.W.,in1888. HehadpreachedinSt.Peterand Paul'sCathedralonaSundayevening. AfterBenedictionhemettheorganist,professorKunz,whorelatesthe incident."Why,"askedhisreverenceoftheorganist,"didyouuse thedominantseventhinthatmodulationinsteadofthecommonchord?" aquestion,theprofessorassured me,thatnotonepersoninten thousandwouldorcouldhaveasked him.

Needlesstosay,hereintheWest FatherO'Reilywasputintothepulpitoneveryimportantoccasion, whenindeedhemadeeveryeffortto doitjustice.Theseoccasionsserve torecallwhatamemoryhehad!He wastopreachthesermonatthesolemnrequiemheldintheCathedral, Perth,inFebruary,1878,onthe deathofPiusIX.InthepreparationofthatsermonIactedashis amanuensis.Whenwerosefromour taskattheFremantlePresbytery,he would,hesaid,takeawalkasfar astheendofthelongjetty,abouta mile.Thoughnotnoticeablymore thanusuallyreservedontheway,we badscarcelyreachedtheendofthe structurewhenhecasuallyinformed methatheknewhis40minutes'orationbyheart!

LiteraturewashisForte

Hewasindeedamasterwiththe pen,andhieculturedmindmade thatpenthevehicle,notofmere word-painting,butofthoughtspreciousinthemselves,andthatfound gracefulexpressioninhisflowing sentences.Efficient,indeed,wasthe serviceherenderedtheChurchwith thateloquentpen.In1870helandedinFremontlefromthe"good" ship"Palestine,"afterspendingfour monthsinhiscabinfOrasasailor hewasasatrociouslyhadasher fourmonths'passageprovedthe "Palestine"herselftobeasasailer.
