treisglintingitsplacidwavesand gildingitsshadedlandscape,forthe dayistineandtheturbulentseais atrest.Ifsuchaharbourwerein anyotherpartoftheworlditwould hecoveredwithsteamboatsand yachts,therewouldheprettyvillas nestlingonitsshores,andthewhole surroundingcountrywouldbeopened nutandplantedwithnature'sfairest flowersandfruitsthisnaturalhavenisthewaterwaytothefamous Gordon,whichrisesinthewildwesternranges,andwindsitswaythroughmountaingorges,rockycliffs, ever-greenislands,andgiganticforestsuntilitislostinthegreatexpanseoftheSouthernOcean.Amore beautifulsceneneverpresenteditself tothehumaneyethanthesinuous courseofthisqueenofAustralrivers.Foradistanceof30milesit embosomsitselfinreachesofexquisitecurveshereandthereitis refreshedbywhirlingrapids,high o'eritssurface,fallsarefoaming,it gracefullytracesitssteadycourse, swallowingnumerousmountaintributaries,andreflectsuponitscrystal surfacethebeautifulcoloursofits richsurroiindings.Itsban'csare clothedwitheverlastinggreen,formedbythousandsofgigantictrees andbabyshrubs,cultivatedbythe touchoftheCreator;thetintsare somagnificentthatthefamousavenuesofBuitenzorgcannotrevealanythingricher.Itssidesareribbed withdeepravineswhichopenout

magnificentperspectivesofthedistantmountains,standingintheazure background.Thevariedtintsof greenfoliagearemirroredineverchangingpicturesinitslimpid depths.Humansciencecanpaintnothingmorebeautiful,nokaleidoscope couldblendaricherwealthofcolouring,.Thereisnotperhapsanother riverintheworldsodistinguished byacharacterofgrandeurandmagnificence.Theirregularitiesofits reaches,itsdeepreflectedshadows, itskaleidoscopeofcolourforma strikingcontrasttotheverdanthills, whichreflecttheirbeautyinits transparentwaters.Thereareother beautifulwaterwaysintheworld,but theGordonhasabeautyallitsown; andhewhoseexpectationsarenot satisfiedbythewonderfulwealthof itsscenicattractionshasadepravedsenseoftheCreator'slavishmagnificence.
