StrikingProtestantTestimonytoWonderfulVitalityofCatholicChurch

sectarianproductionentitled "TheSignsoftheTimes"hasaremarkabletributetotheCatholic ChurchinitsissueofFebruary17. Thepublicationseesthelightofday inMelbourneandasitiscirculatedchieflyamongtheBaptistsand SeventhDayAdventists,itcannot beaccusedofanyparticularpartialityto,ardstheCatholicChurch. Consideringtheanti-Catholictone whichusuallycharacterisesitspages, thefollowingeloquenttributetoCatholicity-especiallyinitseducation policy-isverynoteworthy:-

"ThewonderfulrevivalofCatholicismthroughouttheworld,"saysa writerinarecentnumberofthe"CatholicPress"(Sydney),"iscertainlythemostpronouncedfeaturein thespiritualliteofthenineteenth century,andinnocountryisthis moreevidentthaninGermany."

Thereisnodisputingthefactthat theRomanCatholicChurchto-dayis manifestingconsiderablelifeandvigour,andthatsheisgrowingand advancing.InEnglandsinceherrevivaltheresixtyyearsago,whenthq "papalaggression"arousedconsiderableexcitement,shehasmadesteady Progress.Inthatcountryherconvertsalonehaveforsametimepast reachedthenumberofeightthousandayear,whilehertotalmembershipnowexceedsamillionanda half,whereasfortyyearsagoitwas lessthanamillion.SaidtheRev. Dr.JohnClifford,aleadingEnglish Baptist.,recently,inwritingof"the invasionofProtestantlandsby Romeinaspiritoffierceaggressiveness,resolutedetermination,infinite craft,rigidexclusiveness,anduncompromisingintolerance.""The forcesofRomaniCatholicismare nowdirectedtotheconversionofthe Anglo-Sasonrace.Thatisthegoal oftheaoliryofthePope.

THESECRETOFCATHOLIC VITALITY.

Undoubtedlyaverygreatpartof ifindeednotall,thesecretofCatholicvitalityliesinitssplendid schoolsystem--splendidbecauseitis soadmirablysuitedtotheendsfor whichitwasdesigned.AsDr.CliffordsaysconcerningCatholicaggressioninEngland"Themachineryof educationisworkedwithsleepless vigilance."Theloyaltywithwhich Catholicsmaintainat schoolsystem

Catholicfaith,whichislaterstronglyanddeeplyinculcatedintheimpressionabletissueofinfancyinthe parochialschools.ConventandotherCatholicschoolsaredesignedto producedevotedCatholics,andwell dotheydotheirwork.Theyouth andthemaiden,theyoungmanand theyoungwo:nan,emergefromthese institutionstoremain,inthelarge majorityofcases,truetothefaith oftheirchildhood.

PROTESTANTAPATHYINEDUCATION.

ComparedwiththenumerousinstitutionsofCatholicism,howfew indeedaretheschoolsthatareexpresslyfoundedforthepurposeof rearingstrong,healthyProtestants. Itismarkedlymoretheexception thantheruleforProtestantmoth-

theReformers.Thesamespiritis necessaryintheirsuccessors,yea,a doubleportionofit,evenasadoubleportionofthespiritofElijah wasnottoomuchforthenobleprophetuponwhomthemantleofthe Tishbitetell.ThisspirittheState, withitsschools,cannotinculcate; itcanheinculcatedbytheChurch alone.

DECAYOFPROTESTANTFAITH.

Protestantism,inthemain,is turningawayfromthelivingfountainsthatonceimpartedtoitlife andfreshnessandvigour.Itisrepudiatingitsfoundationprinciples. TheBibleisthegreatBookoutof whoseseed-principlesthegreatReformationsprung,tookroot,and flourishedanditisonlybytheinculcationandthecarryingoutofthe

oftheirown,andmagnificentlysuitedtotheirownends,isadmirable. Theseschoolsarealreadynumerous intheCommonwealth,andtheir numbersarcconstantlyincreasing.

IntheUnitedStatesthesystemhas ranchedmammothproeortions.Five yearsagotherewereinthatcountry4,364parochialschools,attended by1,0:16,842childrenofbothsexes, whilethetotsilnumberofchildrenin Catholicinstitutionswasgivenat morethanonsmillionandaquarter.Therewere198collegesforboys and678acideatesforgirls.There wereeighty-sixseminariesforthe educationoftheclergy,attendedby almostsixthousandstudents.Inadditionthereweremanyotherinstitutions,whichrankedasuniversities,whilethewholesystemwas crownedbythegreatCatholicUniversityatWashington.

TheArtofkeepingYoung. Thosepersonswholookyounger thantheiractualage,arealways younginnindanddisposition whilstthosewholookolderthan theiryearsareinvariablyprematurelyoldintheirthoughtsandways. Theinference,therefore,isthatif wewouldpreserveanoutwardly youthfulappearance,wemustconserveaninwardyouthfulness.The bodyisacounterpartofthemind astheinnermanis,sodoestheoutwardmanappear.Growingoldrests muchaithourselves.Manypeople growprematurelyoldbecausethey discardyouthfulemploymentsand pursuits,andsettledowntoelderly waysjustassomeindividualsbecomeinvalids,whenbyalittleefforttheymightshakeofftheirphysicallethargyandraisethemselves uptohealthandvigour.Inthis countrytoomanyburnthecandleof Lifeatbothends.Theytakenocare oftheirhealthorstrength,butuse uptheirenergiesfromdaytoday inafeverishquestforenjoyment. Theaverageyoungmanandwoman seemstobeeveronthehurrychasingthegodPleasure,forgetfulthat theyaretestingandstrainingthe forcesofyouthandrushingonto wrinklesandprematureoldage.I 1:aveoftenwonderedwhywehaveso manydoctorsandchemists'shops. Butwhenaholidaycomesroundthe rusting,feverishexcitementofthe crowd,middle-agedandyoung,loadeddownwithbasketsandtheequipmentsofthepicnic,leavenodoubt inmyminduponthematter.Ifwe onlymoderatedourpleasures,put wisdomintooureatinganddrinking,timedourtempers,exercised ourlungswithlaughterandtried earnestlytobehappy-happyallthe while--we'nightalllivetoagood oldage,andnottobeworringand whiningoverourwrinklesandlost youth.

Theremarkableaddressdelivered bytheRev.Mr.Meekattherecent MethodistConferenceinSydneyon theoccasionofhisretirementfrom theofficeofPresident,hasawaleued considerablecommentandIts.ent amongsthisMethodistbrethren.Baringtheproceedingsoftheconference amotionwassubmittedbythe PaulClipsham,whichexcitedtlong andsomewhatcuriousdiscussion.'the motionwas:-

Mr.Dawson,ex-Mayor,insupportingtheremarksoftheprevious speakers,saidhetookitasagreat complimenttoBeverleythattheHibernianSocietysawfittoholdtheir 17thConferenceintheirdistrict.It wasanhonourtohaveamongstthem Irishmeninsuchabody,forthey werenotedthroughouttheworldfor theirlovetothelandoftheirbirth, andheferventlywishedthatAustralianswouldstimulatetheselfsameideas.Anothergreatfactor thatstoodtothecreditoftheIrish racewasthat,nomatterwhere theywerefound,ornomatterwhat occupationtheywerein,theynever yetwereguiltyofutteringoneword againsttheircountryortheactions ofthecountry'sleaders.Hewished theSocietyeverysuccess.

(17).DuringtheyearHisLordshipBISHOP('LUNEGAVEAFURTHERPROOFOFHISPATERNAL. INTERESTinourwelfarebybecomingaLifeHonoraryMember. Thefunctioninconnectionwiththe initiationofHisLordship,andwhich tookplaceintheHibernianHall, Perth,on11thJuly,wasonethat shouldliveinthememoryofall thosewhobadtheprivilegetobe present.HisLordship,inthecourse ofaneloquenttributetotheSociety,said"Icherishtheprivilegeor beinginitiated,becausethemembers oftheH.A.C.B.S.havebeenstaunch endfaithfulalliesineverygoodwork undertakenfortheGLORYOFGOD endtheSALVATIONOFSOULS."

l'hecommitteeoftheLeonoraHibernianSociety,whoorganisedthe St.Patrick'sDaysports,werefavouredwithidealweather,andasall arrangementswerewellinhand,a gooddaywasanticipated.Unfortunatelyowingtosomeofthebandsmennotbeingabletoattendearly intheafternoon,theintendedpreliminaryprocessionhadtoheabandoned.Theattendance,too,proved somewhatdisappointing,owing, doubtlesstothefactthatpay-day ontheSonsofGwalinhadbeendeferredtillthe111thinst.Thesports wereconductedunderthedirectionof thefollowingofficials:--Patron,Mr. .las.Willisstewards,Messrs.M. AsatittingwindupforSt.l'atrick'sDay,aconcertbadbeenorganisedbythesportscommittee,the mainfeaturesofwhichwerethe Irishsongs,choruses,dances,etc., followedbyaode-actcomedy,entitled"TheAreaBelle."Theconcertprogrammewasshort,hutthe itemswereofgoodquality,and werewellreceivedbyalargeaudience.Twochorusesweregivenby about35childrenfromtheDominicanConventSchool,andtheirfresh, youngvoicesshowedabundantevidenceofcarefultrainingbytheSisters.Bothwereverypleasingitems.

Adanceentitled"IrishCoPeen's Dance,"byfourlittlegirl,Noisses Pettigrove,Woods,laipsley,and Morris-wasamostdelightfulspectide.Thee-nimble-footedyoung damselswereattiredinIrishpeasantcostumes,andlookedcharming. Theirdancingwasagainhighly creditabletotheirteachers,andthe audiencebecamesoenthusiastic thatanensirewasvociferouslyde mantled.Mrs.F.Westwasinexcellentvoice,andreceivedheartyapplausefurawellrenderedsong, "Rose,SoftlyBloomin4."Thislady alsogaveasymantheticinterpretationof"TheRing."AnTrishdance byMr.1.1.Dorewaswellreceived. owingtotheillnessofMr.A.A.
