Whensittingatdinneronefinesummer'seveningIwasstartledbythe appearanceofablackfaceatthe windowoftheFrenchdoorthat closedofftheverandahfromthediningroom.Itwasafacesufficiently ferocioustofrightenanyordinary individual,andasthewickedeyes finedonmewithakeenandpenetratinggazeIconfessIwassomewhatalarmed.Mycompanion,the stationmanager,merelyglancedup andcontinuedhismeal.
"Whatisthathlackfellowdoingat thedoor?"Iqueried,forIfeltvery uncomfortableunderhisprolonged stare.
