Themovementfortheintroduction oftheSistersofMercyintothefar awayWesterntownofCharleville setonfoottwoyearsagobyRev. Father('ashmanwashappilycrownedonarecentSunday,whenHis GracetheCoadjutorArchbishopin thepresenceofalargeconcourseof people,blessedanddedicatedthefine conventandschooljusterectedin thatcentre.Formanymonthsthe townspeoplehadwatchedwithpride theprogressbeingmadewiththe erectionofthebuildings.Father Cashman,withheartandsoulinthe movement,washere,thereandeverywherestimulatingtheworkersinthe goodcauseandimpartingtothem hisownperennialspiritofhopefulness.Somepeoplesaidthemovetnentwoulddieanaturaldeath,but theywereprophetswhoknewneither thespiritofCatholicsacrificenor theindomitablecourageandcapacityforworkof('harleville'sparish priest.TherewasageneralCommunionBreakfastheldbytheHibernianSociety.TheArchbishopsuitablyrepliedtothetoastofhis health,andFatherCashman,who spokesubsequently,andwhohasnot onlybeenthefounder,butthelife andsoulofthesociety,gotagreat ovation.itwastheoft-expressed wishofallpresentthatthefunction wouldbecomeanannualone.

THEARCHBISHOP'SADDRESS.

Thededicationofthisfinegroup ofCatholicbuildingsiscertainlya eryhappyeventinthehistoryof yourtownanddistrict-anevent thatwilllongliveinthememoryof thosewhohaveparticipatedinit. `'harleville,to-day,welcomedthe SistersofMercywithunbounded Pleasureandwiththefullestconfidencethattheworktoheinauguratedintheirschoolwillmake forthelastingbenefitofthe aholedistrict.Irememberwellhow enthusiasticyouwerewhen18months agoitwasmyprivilegetolaythe foutptionblockofthesefinebuildings.'FromthatdaytothisFather ''ashmanhasworkedwithaneverfailinghopeandcourageanddevonnjithatweretrulyadmirable,and Ilruicharefittinglycrownedbytoday'shappyceremony. Werejoice withhimandwithyouoverwhatwith thebless.ineofLeavenhasbeen achievedinthefaceofmanydifil tilties.

Whilethusforwardingthehighest materialinterestsoftheircountry, Ineednotremindyouhowmany hardshipspeopleinthebackcountryofAustraliahavetoendure.

Theymustforegoforthemselves andtheirchildrenthemanyadvantagesenjoyedbythosewholivein largecentresofpopulation.Oneof theseisarefinedorliberaleducation.Thewealthysquatter,itis true,maybringitwithinthe:each ofhissonsbysendingthemtocollegesandboardingschools,butthe Childrenofthoseofslendermeans

inhertraincultureandrefinement ofahighorder,whileherchiefconcernistobuildupthecharacterof youngAustraliansontheonlysure foundation,namely,faithandthe TenCommandmentsofGod.Iam personallyacquaintedwiththeSister Superiorandeverymemberofthe staffsentoutbytheReverendMothertoworkthisschool,andIcan assureyouthatamoreexcellentor capablestaffofteachersFatherCashmancouldnothaveprocuredifhe hadthechoosingofthemhimself.In fact,notwithstandingthehumilityof

fruitfulnesswhichthe-blessingof Godalwaysbrings.Mayitnotbe thatinyearstocomeyourown CharlevillewillsendoutSistersof MercytodiffuseinlessfortunatecentrestheblessingofChristianeducationthatyouwelcomewithsuch cheerfulnessandgratitudeto-day.

Inthankingourownpeoplefor theirgenerosityincontributingto thecostofthesehandsomebuildings, Icannotandmustnotomitasincerewordofgratitudeforthehearty co-operationandgeneroussupport receivedfromthosewhodonotworshipatonealtarwithus,butwho aregladtoacknowledgetheblessingthataschoollikethismeansto anytownordistrict.Theyfeelthat weCatholicsaremakingagreatsacrificeinanoblecause.AttheHibernianbreakfastthismorningI heardoneofthebestspeakersatthe tabledeclarethatheowednotone pennytotheGovernmentforhis education,ashehadreceiveditall fromthedevotednunsintheConventSchoolatRoma.Thatwasa verytellingwayinwhichtoputthe Catholicposition,anditmadea deepimpressiononme.IthinkI mayappealtothehighsenseofjusticeofthepeopleoftheWestand askthemifthecountryistreating Catholicsfairlyinthematterofeducation.Isitrightorequitablethat weshouldbearadoubletaxbecause forconsciencesakewemaintainour ownschools?

TheSistersarehereprimarilyfor thebenefitofCatholicchildrenof thetown,hutothercitizensorresidentsofthedistrictwhomaydesire tosendtheirchildrentotheschool arewelcometodoso,andIneed scarcelyassurethemthattheirreligion-whateveritis-willnotheinterferedwith.(Loudapplause.)

HisGracethencalleduponFather Cashmantoreadastatementofaccountsinconnectionwiththeerectionofthebuildings.

STATEMENTOFACCoUNTS.

Ithasoftenoccurredtomethat thoseu-homakethegreatestsacrificesfortheircountryoftenreapthe leastbenefitfrontit.Thesoldiers andsailorswhoseachievementson landandseahavebroughtpeace anduntoldwealthtothenationare 'butp,irlyremunerated,whilethe sacrificestheyhavetomake,thediscomfortsandinconveniencesthey havetoendureareunparalleledin anyothercalling.

Somewhatanalogoustotheirpositionisthatofthosewhoselotis castintheAu4tralianbush.

THEWORKWHICHTHEYDOFOR THEIRCOUNTRYCANNOTBE OVER-ESTIMATED.

Theyarecalledupontobethepioneersofcivilisation,toblazethe track,tosubduethevirginsoil,and winfromitthewealththatstimulatescommerce.Theirsitistorear thoseherdsofcattleandsheepthat feedthemultitudesinourtownsand citiesandkeepthegiantshinsof moderntisfreight-laden,travellingtoandfrobetweentheoldworld .4ndthenew.

havetobecontentwiththelittle primaryeducationprovidedforthem bytheState.Itisinresponseto thecryofthebushchild-oneof Queensland'sbrightestassets-that theSistersofMercyhavecomeout hererivehundredmilesfromthe coast.AlreadyasBishopofRockhamptonIhavehadtheconsolation ofopeninc('onventSchoolsatsuch out-placesasWinton,Cloncurry,and Goondiwindi,andItrustthatFatherCashmanwillgivemearepetitionofthatconsolationandofthe pleasurederivedfromto-day'sfunctionbycallingonmelateronto openConventSchbolsinsuchfar awayplacesasCunnamullaandAugathella.IthinkImayclaimthat fortheCatholicchildrenofCharlevilleatanyrateabrighteraopens withtheadventofthedevotedwomenwhoselifeworkistheimpartingofChristianeducation.Wherever theSisterofMercygoesshecarries

yourgoodpastor,Ithinkhemust havesomefriendatCourttobeable togetsuchastaff.

Inconclusionwithto-day'sceremonya,coincidenceoccurredtome worthmentioning.Thereisinthe CountyofCorkinIrelandjuston thebordersofmyownnativecounty,Limerick,andexactly12miles frommynativevillageatowncalled Charleville.Ithasinitsdaygiven somedistinguishedmentotheserviceoftheChurch,thelatestof whomisDr.Mannix,thedistinguishedandscholarlyCoadjutorArchbishopofMelbourne.Butthatisnot mypoint.Thecoincidenceisthat awayback:in1866thatverytownof CharlevillegavetoAustraliaoneof thefirstcommunitiesofSisters.of Mercythatevercametothiscountry.ThecommunitysettledinBathurst,and,aftermanyinitialtrials, expandedtheirworktoothercentreswiththatsuccessandhappy.

TheRev.FatherCashmanpointed outthattheexpenditurehadbeen about£2,800,andatthatdatetliey foundthattheyhadtomakeupabout£1,100.Hesaidtherewerethiree greatfactorsinthesuccessofthe movement.Therewastheblessing ofDivineProvidenceandtherewas thegenerosityoftheRev.Motherof AllHallows,whohadgiventhemthe landandplacedasubstantialsum onthefoundationstone.inaddition. shehadsentanother£50toassist toclearoffthedebt.Thirdly,they hadtheco-operationofhisGrace theCoadjutorArchbishopandofthe peopleofCharlevilledistrict.

HisGracetheCoadjutorArchbishopspokeinthehighesttermsof tl.econtractors'work,andsaidbe thoughttherewasnotinthewhole ofWesternQueenslandafinerschool building.Therewasasumof;tetween£600and£700stillowing, wl.ichhisGracehopedwouldheconsiderablyreducedifnotentirelyliquidatedbyMay,whenhewouldagain visitthedistrict,andinromPanY withtheRev.FatherCashmanvisit theWesterndistrictsasfarasWindorah.-"CatholicAdvocate."

Anewconventandschoolwas openedrecentlyatStockinbingal,by HisLordshipDr.Gallagher,assisted bytheVeryRev.FatherO'Shaugnessy.Thenewconventisapretty, brick,up-to-datebuilding.Theschool willalsoserveasachurch.The building,withfurnitureandfittings, costapproximately£2,500.Ata banquetheldintheeveningtosignalisetheevent,BishopGallagher, speakingonopencompetitioninthe schoolsandcolleges,said"Asa citizenofAustralia,aprogressive andfreecountry,itisdesirableto haveopencompetitionamongstthe schoolscompetitionforbursariesfreeandhonourablecompetitionamongstthechildrenoftheState,when itwillhefoundthattheblueblood oftheIrishman,withintellectand courageofheart,willholdtheirown witheveryothersection."

SpeakingataSt.Patrick'sDay CelebrationCommitteemeetingin Melbourne,recently,atwhichthe Bishop-electofSalewasalsopresent,theArchbishopofMelbourne said"Hewaspleasedtohearthat thecommitteehadeliminatedthe professionalelement.St.Patrick's Day,celebration%mightberegardedas afamilygathering-aNationalCatholicdemonstrationoftheresidents ofMelbourneandthesuburbs.Itconveyedalessontothemselvesofthe solidarityofIrish-Catholicsentiment,whichwasnotlostonthose outsidewhodidnotseeeyetoeye withIrishNationalists."

TheVictorianStateCouncilhas receivedaletterfromthesecretary oftheProvisionalCommitteeofthe NewZealandCatholicFederation, thankingtheVictorianCouncilfor itsgoodwishes,andstatingthatit isanticipatedthat,atanearly date,theFederationwillbeformed inthe120parishesthroughoutthe Dominion.

Mr.N.J.Walahe,theImmigration Officer,reportedontheworkofthe CatholicImmigrationBureau.It wasdecidedthattheparishpriestof thedistrictinwhichnewarrivals settlebenotifiedbytheImmigration Officer.

ItwasarrangedthattheEdocation,SocialQuestionsandOrganisingCommitteesshouldmeetduring theweekandsubmitreportstothe nextmeetingoftheStateCouncil. Verygratifyingreportswerereceived fromvariousBranchCouncils throughouttheStatewithregardto theworkofenrollingmembers.Many oftheBranchesstatedthattheyhad notmetwithasolitaryrefusal,and theyhaveeveryconfidencethatthey willsucceedinenrollingeveryCatholicman,woman,andchildinthe districtasmembersoftheFederation.

WE aRESTILLPIONEERS, WHOSEPEREMPTORYMISSION

ITISTOCLEARTHEFOREST, cultivatethesoil,buildhighways andrailways,openupmarkets,and subjugatetheillimitableregionwhich liesbeyondthefrontierofcivilisationandsettlement.Ourexistence hasbeentoobrief,ourmaterialneeds tooinsistenttopermitoftheripenrigofthoseendowmentsoutof whichliteraturesprings.Timewill certanilyre-adjusttherelationsbetweencommercialismandculture;betweentheforcesofindustryandof art.Asnationalliferipensand populationexpands,menofgenius willarisetoendowAustraliawitha distinctiveliterature,andguidethe racetoatrueappreciationofit.

Thereis,ofcourse, AWIDEDISTINCTIONBETWEEN LITERATUREANDJOURNALISM.

:.iteraturedenotessomementalpro'tactoflastinghumaninterest,a workwhichextortsappreciationfroaa everyage,ratherthananephemeral publication,whateveritspassingmeritsmayhe.Butwhiledrawingthis Ane,wemustnotignoretheobligationunderwhichliteratureisto journalism.Itiswellwithinthe marktosaythatthemajorityof modernliteratimadetheirinitial bowtothepublicthroughthecol.minsofthepress.Andthefactis worthyofrecallthatitwasaCatholicperiodicalwhichdiscoveredseveralforemostAustralianauthorsand orators.Fromittheyreceivedthe stimulusandencouragementwhich carriedthemforwardtotheestablishmentofworld-widereputations. Anagencysoprescientsurelydeservesrecognitionasaworthyauxiliaryinthedomainofculture.Ithas fedandkepttrimmedthelampwhose glowhasenabledustogarnersuch literarytreasureaswepossess. Thisisthemorepraiseworthy. sincetheencouragementofliterature canneverbemorethanoneofthe subsidiaryfunctionsofCatholicjournalism.

ITSREALACTIVITIESARE,INDEED,INOTHERANDMORE PROSAIC'FIELDS.

Justasitssurroundingsgotoshape thelifeoftheindividual,sodoes itsenvironmentlargelydeterminethe missionoftheCatholicnewspaper. Wheretheenvironmentishostileto Catholicinterests,theparamount functionoftheCatholicnewspaperis thevindicationandprotectionof

thoseinterests.Forareasonalready suggested,theCatholicjournalistn:ay rarelyneedtobreakalanceindefenceoftheChurch'sdoctrines.But itisnecessarilydemandedofhim thatheshallrepelattacksonCatholicinstitutions,andonthepoliticallibertiesofCatholics,aswellas exposethedisabilitiesstillinflicted onhisco-religionists.Hissphereis narrowedbyasenseofthemonstrouswronginvolvedinthedenial toCatholiccharitiesofanysharein thepublicrevenuetowhichCatholicssolargelycontribute.Thedoors oftheirhospitals,orphanages,retreats,arewideopentopersonsof everycreedandrace,theonlyconditionofadmissionbeingillness,suffering,oraffliction.Yeteveryappealforapublicgrantinaidof theseinstitutionsiscontemptuously ignored.Again,Catholicschoolsrelievethepublicexchequerofmany thousandsofpoundsannually.They complyinallrespectswiththestan-

newspaperdependsonthesizeofits audienceandthisagainaepenison willingtopayforit.ButitaCatholicnewspaperistoexpoldtothe desireddimensions,thesebusiness principlesmustnotbetoorigidly applied.AsapropagandistandchampionofCatholicity,itoughttobe abletocommandsomevoluntaryservice.Theobjective,

"ACATHOLICPAPERINEVERY CATHOLICHOME," couldneverberemotelyapproached, muchlessaccomplished,by,anyorganisationdependentontheresourcesofasinglenewspaperpropriet ary.Butitmighteasilybecompassedbyafewearnest,enthusiastic spiritsineachparish,whobrought tothetasktheinfluenceoftheir personalityandlocalconnections. Theplanisnotneworuntried.Otherminoritieshavefounditeffective indisseminatingknowledgeofgrievancesandproposalsforreform.They

WestralianMemberintheFederal ofRepresentatives. dardofthepublicschoolsofthe State.Now,thisisaservicewhich, incommonhonesty,oughttobepaid for,sincetheStateisrelievedof partofanobligationwhichitlong agoacceptedascommunal.Thereis absolutely NOANSWERINEQUITYTOTHIS CONTENTION, unlessitbeheldthatthecommunity isjustifiedindoingthatwhichina Privateindividualwouldbegrossly unfairanddishonourable.Letwho willbedispleased,theCatholic:ournalistmustregarditasanimperativedutytoburnthesefactsinto thepublicmemory.Thatbyorthroughhisefforttheywillsomeday touchthenationalconscience,isas certainasthattruthmustultimatelyprevail.

Inthisconnectionitispr.osrto considerwhethersomethingmaynot bedonetoextendtheintlienceofthe Catholicnewspaper.Thequestionis largelyacommercialone,'.*cryvital tothoseactivelyengagedintheenterprise.Yet,aswehaveseen,its solutionaffectsthewholeCatholic body.Normally,thepowerofa

House itscapacitytogiveitsstibecr,bais whattheywantforwhattheyare didnotatoncediscovertheright man,norshallwe.Buttheyperseveredinthesearch,andultimately succeeded.Thatafewhundredsof whole-heartedvolunteerscouldquicklyquadruplethepoweroftheCatholicpressinAustralia,isalmostbeyondquestion.Itonlyremainsfor thosewhohavethepowerofcalling suchaforceintobeingtogivethe necessaryimpulsetothemovement. Thepriceofanewspapercannotbe excludedfromanyprojectforplacingitineveryCatholichousehold. Noonewillcontendthatthreepence perweekisanexcessivechargefora publicationofthirty-sixtofortyeightpages,thehulkofwhichis devotedtoreadingmatter.Itis doubtfulwhetheranyprofitnowremainsonthecirculation,since agents'commission,unsoldcopies, andotherdeductionsreducethereturnstothepublisher.Hemust, therefore,looktotheadvertisements forcompensation.Fromthisit wouldseemimpossibletolowerthe pricetothesubscriberwithouta
