BesidesdischargingthedutydevolvingonmeasBishop,viz.,topresenttotheHolyFatheracomprehensiveReportoftheDioceseof Perthfromaspiritualandfinancial aspect,IhopealrotolieinapositiontopresentonbehalfoftheCatholicsofthisDioceseagenerous PETER'SPENCEOFFERINGthat willmanifestinastrikingmanner ourfilialattachmentto,andqur aitholicloyaltytowards,theHead oftheChurch-theillustriousPrisoneroftheVatican-'PopePittsX.
Whenwebearinmindontheone handthattheHolyFather,now ruthlesslydispoiledofallearthly possessions,hastorelyonthegenerosityofHisfaithfulchildrenall theworldoverforthevastannual outlayinvolvedintheGovernmentof overtwohundredmillionsofsubjects,andontheotherhandthatwe intheDioceseofPerthhavenot beencontributingourshare,I am surethatallwillmakeasupreme efforttomakethePeter'spencecollectionthisyearagreatsuccess.

wasentitledtomuchappreciation, forthekindsympathyhealways evincedinhisverseforthemandown onhisluck.Manyof1.awson'sfavouriteswerequoted,inwhichwas shownthepoet'sgreatsympathy withthoseAustraliansinourneverneverterritory.Twopoemsfromhis hook,"TheSkylineRiders,"were ofmorethanordinaryhumaninterest-namely,"TheManthatMade BadMatches,"andthepoementitled "TheyThinkthat1donotKnow."
InthefirstLawsontouchedahumanchordofdisappointment,when hesaid
"Oh,it'scruel,yes,it'scruelforthe husbandandthewife, Whohavenotonethoughtincommon,andarewedforwearylife, Theymustseeitthroughandsuffer, forthechildrentheymustrear, (bthefolkthatmakebadmatches haveaheavycrosstohear."
Inthesecondpoemthespeakerstatedwegotareplyfroalawsuitto thosewhochargedhimwithnotbeingabletospeakofthefinerfeelingsofloveasapoetshould.He gavethemgoodproofoftheirmistakewithsuchpassionatesentiments asthese:-

Thespeaker,insurveyingfull%Lawson'sefforts,particularlythe"Last Review,"and"FacesintheStreet," showedhowthebreathofthebush, togetherwithadeephumanity,ran througheverythinghewrote.He claimedthatinspiteofperhaps manyweakerefforts,Lawsonhad contributedlustretothefameof Australianpoetry,andhehopedthat beforetheangeldeathsilencedhis harpstringsforeverhemightgive verymanymoreinspiringmessages tothelandwhich,inthepoet's words,"wastheonlylandthat seemethreal."

GeorgeEssexEvanswas'referredto asthepoetof"AustraliaUnited." WelookedtohimatacriticalperiodofournationallifeforgeldRue,mindhegaveittousinno vaaitemanner,whenhetoldus:-
"AwakeAriseThewingsofdawn Areteetineatthegatesofday, 'rhesilvervapoursmeltaway.
Themorningstarbathbeenwithdrawn."
Abovetheswordofpain,thecrown ;ifpeace."
AmongmanyotherofEvans'works quoted,washistributetothe"Irish Dead,"whichwasmentionedasit splendidappreciationoftheheroic martyrsofIreland,andofbeinga wellgroundedprophecyofjusticefor Irelandinthenearfuture.Thelast ofEvans'poemsquotedbyMrDoyle contained,hesaid,apostalmessagetothe"Australian."Evans, likeallourlaterdaypoets,had conceivedthegreatdangerwhich confrontedthisSouthernlandfrom invasion.Itwasapoet'sprovince totellusofourpast,ourpresent, andourfuture.Evansfulfilledina mostpracticelwayoneofthoseduties.Australia'sfuturewouldhe fashionedjustinproportionto howsheaccentedandactedon Evans'advicehenhesaidtous:-

Thiswashisexcuseforrequesting IllsLordshiptocometoJarrandale; andhefeltsurethatthoseConfirmedwouldfollowHisLordship's movementswithinterest,andwould
main--ifnotentirely-atleastfor somelongertimeuntilWChavea greaternumberofPrieststoattend tothemanyscatteredmembersof theCatholicFaith.HisLordship pointedouttothepeoplethatthey couldbyunitedeffortsdoverymuch tomaketheoldpresbyteryhabitable,comfortable,andrespectable.
Inaddressingthechildren,theBishopemphasisedthegreatimportanceandthepricelessvalueofthe grandoldCatholicFaithwhichthey professed,andinwhichtheywould bestrengthenedbytheSacramentof confirmation."Isincerelyhopeand pray,"concludedHisLordship, "thatnoattraction,nobri'e-nothingwhichthisworldcanoffer-will everdestroyorweakentheFaithin thesoulsofanyofthosewhose foreheadsIsignto-daywiththe Sacredchrism.'Betruetoyourprayers,heregularatMass,andatthe HolySacraments,avoidbadcompanions,readgoodbooks,andyour faithwillgrowstrongerandwill enableyoutofightthebattlesof life,toovercomealltemptations,to triumphoveryourownpassions,and tosavesourimmortalsouls."

Whenthechildrenhadmadetheir ProfessionofFaith,theindulgenceof 40dayswasimpartedtothecongregationbyHisLordshipthe Bishop.
InSerpentineandinJarrandaleDr Chinegavethosewhomheconfirmed thepledgefromallintoxicating drinkuntiltheageof21years.He pointedoutthemanysadexamples thatweseearounduseverydaytellingusoftheevildonetohomes andtosocietybyover-indulgencein strongdrink.Heregrettedtothink thatsomepoorchildren'sawthis badexampleintheirownhomes, whichshouldbeamirrorofevery virtue."Children,"saidHisLordship,"whenyouseeadrunkardjust saytoyourself,'Itispossiblefor metobecomeasdisgustingasthat drunkardifIamnotcareful.'Well, nowisyourtimetobecareful,now isthetimetosowthegoodseeds oftemperanceandabstinenceifyou wishtogrowuphealthyandrespectableandsuccessfulmenandwomen."

HecametoBrokenHillin'92and heldthepositionofforemanon Block12forfiveyears,butwasforcedtoresignthroughill-health.He tookatriptoIrelandandAmerica, afterwhichhecametoWestAletralia.Hehashadchargeofvariousminingventuresonthesefields, notablytheGoldenGroup,underthe LondonandGlobe,andtheIronsidesNorth.Heresignedfromthe IronsidesandwentagaintoAmericatoengageinotherpursuitswith hisbrothers,buttheclimatebeing toocoldandnotagreeingwithhis health,hereturnedtoWestAustraliaaboutfouryearsagoandwas employedastimbermanonthe Horseshoemineuntilhemetwith theaccidentthatendedamostremarkableminingcareer.Hewasa verymodestandretiringindividual, goodnatured,andofalovabledispositionandremarkablygoodliving, andalwaysreadywithadviceand encouragementtothelessinexperiencedofhisworkmates.Hewasnevermarriedandverylittleisknown ofhispeople.otherthanthathe hasoneortwobrothersinAmerica whosebusinesshewasinterestedin.

TheHolyFatherreceivedinaudiencenearlythreehundredpriestsof theApostolicUnion.Theoccasion wasrenderedvery,solemnbythe presenceofthefounderoftheUnion, Mgr.Lebeurier,whohaslivedtosee itkeepitsgoldenJubilee,ofCardinalsAmette:andDeCabrieres,and severalFrenchBishops,hutmostof allbytheaddressdeliveredonthe occasionbyHisHoliness.ThePope spokethroughoutinamostearnest way,andmadenosecretofhisemotion whenhereferredtothosewhoare soreadytodiscussandcriticisehis actsandwordsinsteadofrendering dueobedience.

Kielyministeredafterhisarrivalin WestAustralia,andonhisleaving thatcentretotakeupdutiesin Bunburyhewascordiallyfarewelled. CR.J.SHEAHANsupportedthe toast,andsaidhehopedHisHolinessthelonewouldconferthetitle ofMonsignorontheirrespected guest.Hespokeonbehalfofthe churchcommittee,anddetailedthe
thinkitwouldbeonlyforavery shorttime.TheirregretatFather Kiely'sdeparturewasmixedwith prideandsatisfactionathisbeing chosenforthehonourablepostof privatesecretarytotheBishopduringhisLordship'striptoRome..He thoughthemightbepardonedfor referringtothebrightprospectsof HomeRuleforIreland.Theywould likeFatherKielytoconveytotheir fellow-countrymeninIrelandthatno bodyofIrishCatholicsviewedwith greatersatisfactiontheapproaching completionofIreland'shopesthan theBoulderbranchofthesociety. (Applause.)TheyalsodesiredFatherKielytoconveytoAlmaMater howbrightlyburnsthelampoffaith inBoulder.Itgaveunboundedsatisfactiontoeverysectionofthe communitytoknowthatFatherKielywastoreturntothem.NotCatholicsalone,buteverysectionof thetownadmiredtheirguest.Those braidmindedchurchmen,Archdeacon CollickandRev.A.W.Bray,had bornepublictestinulnptotheworth ofFatherKiely.Hecouldassure FatherKielythathewouldhewel-

VERYREV.DEANROBINtiON,of Kalgoorlie,joinedinthetestimony ofFatherKiely,speakingonbehalf oftheKalgoorlieparish.Hecould speakintimatelyofFatherKielyas apersonalfriendfor12or13years. Theirguesthadahappyknaakof makingthemostofthings.lfeproducedgreatresultsfromverylittle effort.(Laughter.)Hewascertainly averysuccessfulorganiser,endhe coneratulatedhimonthesplendid tripbeforehim,whichwouldinclude PalestineandEgypt.FatherKiely aftervisitingRomewouldgoto MaltatotheEucharisticCongress withtheBishop,andSirGerald StricklandwasmakingspecialarreneementsatMaltafortheirconvenience.(Applause.)

MR.GERALDHARTREY,onbehalfoftheC.Y.M.Society,congratulatedFatherKielyontheopportunityhehadofvisitingotherparts oftheglobe,andparticularlyhis nativeland.Incarryingoutthe nobleandimportantworkofthesocietyFatherKielyhadaffordedthem everyassistance.Itwasinteresting topointoutthatIreland'strouble atpresentwastheretentionofher youngmen-theproblemwasthat theyoungmendidnotstay,inIreland.Irelandcouldnotattachher youngmentoher,andthiswasresponsibleforherbackwardposition. Ifthechurchwereinthesamepredicamentitwouldbeinasimilar backwardpositiontoIreland.But theeffortsoftheirworthyparish priesthadbeendirectedinendeavouringtogettheiryoungmeninto theworkofthechurch.Hewas suretheBishopwouldbeagood companiontotravelwith,forhe noticedinPerthonSaturdaylast thathetookakeeninterestincric-

OnWednesdayeveninglast,Bishop (lane,accompaniedbyFr.Eugene Callan,ofGlendalough;FatherVerling,V.G.;andFr.O'Gorman,West Perth,visitedOsborneParkforthe purposeofdiscussingwiththeCatholicresidentstheprospectsof buildinganewchurchinthatprogressivesuburb.Mr.Tyleroccupied thechair,andaveryenthusiastic meetingwasheld.HisLordship spokeencouraginglyoftheproject, andsuggestedthatastartbemade atonce..Themagnificentsumof £200wascollectedorpromisedat themeeting,witheveryprobability ofanadditionalt100beingsubscribed.Inadditiontothetwoblocks alreadysecured,theBishopdonated twootherblocks,anditishoped thatultimatelyatineConvent Schoolaswellasasubstantial Churchwillbeerectedinthatpromisingcentre.

Therewaslittleconcernandno sympathyonthefacesofthetwelve "goodmenandtrue"whothuslightlyvotedawayahumanlife-nay, rather,theyfeltthattheyhaddone ameritoriousdeedinavengingthe murderofoneoftheirfriendsby this"ignorantforeigner."
The"ignorantforeigner,"ayoung fellowofabout20years,unableto understandthelanguageandmannersofthestern-facedjudge,who nowdemanded,inthesetphrasesof thelaw,iftheprisonerhadanythingtosay,shookhisheadata sienfromhiscousin,whowasinterpretingthesalientpointsofthe trialtohim.Then,inacalmand formalvoice,thejudgecoldlytoned offthealwaysimpressivewordsof thedeathsentence,andTonyCarranowasledbacktohissolitary cell. Thestillmutteringcrowddispersed,feelingthatjusticewasbeing done.Swiftly,too,hadretribution takenplaceforitwasonlyyesterdaythattheturbulentstrikersat thebigmillhadsurgedarounditin angrytumult,andwhentheyhad beendispersedbythehiredstrike breakersofthestubbornowners,one ofthem,awatchman,wasleftbruisedanddyingonthefield.Hehad whisperedaname,andthatname uas"Tonyl'errano!"Theterrified murdererhidhimself,andwhenthe officersofthelawcametosearch hisshantyoneofthosecoincidents hichsometimeshappentookplace. Delightedtoknowthatoneof theseAmericansknewhimbyname, Tonyeagerlyacknowledgedhisidentity,andwasbreakingintoavolubleflowofinterestingquestioning, whentheotherofficerproduceda locallookingdocumentandbeganto readitinasonoroustoneofvoiceaprocesswhichwasunintelligibleto Tony.Thentheysnappedapairof handcuffsonhiswrists,and,silencinghimwithacurt"Comeon!"led theastoundedyoungmanawaytoa darkandImposingstructure,thelike ofwhichhehadneverseenbefore. Theylefthiminalittleroom,and lockedandboltedthedooronhim. Hewasinaprison! Thatmuchbe couldunderstand.
ButwhatoftheelderTony?He sawthemarrestandtakeawayhis youngcousin,andwasimpulsively startingafterthemtoexplainthe mistake,whentheterrorintowhich behadbeenthrownagainreturned, andhestopped.Afterallwhy shouldhecare?Andthenoccurred thefirstrealstruggleintheman's life,andhefell.Heknewthatin thetemperofthetownaftertheprecedineriot,itwouldbealmostcertaindeathtohimtoacknowledge thathehadstruckthefatalblow, andlifewasnevermoresweetto
hintthanatthethought.Ifchance gavehimsuchanopportunity,toget outofadesperatesituation,he aouldbefoolishtorejectit.
Sohearguedwithhimself,andso hestartedonhiscareerofdeception.HewenttotheprisonandattachedhimselftoTony,ostensibl ashisinterpreter,butinrealityto tellhimonlysuchthingsaboutthe comingtrialaswouldnotendanger hisownlife.Ittookallhisartful dissimulation,however,towithstand theinnocentwondermentoftheyouth ashetranslatedtohimthefinal sentenceofdeath-adeathheknew wasmeantforhimself.
Itwasstrange,andbitterhard, fortheyoungmantofindhimself aloneinthatforeignland,immured inalockedandbarredcell,awaitingacruelandignominiousdeath. Hethoughtwithlongingofthe dear,quiethomeacrosstheocean. Hehadlaughinglyleftit,affirming hisintentiontocomebackrichand powerful,torepayhisdevotedmotherforallthetendercareshehad bestoweduponhim.Heremembered nowtheeveningswhenthewidowed motherhadlovinglygatheredher childrenaroundherknee,andtogethtitheyintoned,withsoft,musi. calvoices,thesweetprayersofOur Lady'sRosary.
Ah,yes,theRosaryThatremindedhimofhispromise-thatnever, underanycircumstances,wouldhe forgettosayhisRosaryeveryday. "Corifyou,mydearboy,willsay yourBeadsacrossthewater,Iand yourlittlebrothersandsisterswill sayoursoverhere;andsoweshall keepOurBlessedLadyeverinmind ofyou,andshewillbringyousafelybacktous."Thesewerethe wordsofhisdearmotherhenhe hadbadeheralastfond"goodbye,"and,thoughhehadfaithfully kepthispromises,nevertillnow, whenalltheworldseemedturned againsthim,whendeathitselfloomedblackandsternbeforehim,didhe realisethewholesomehealingof thosesimplepetitions.Inthegloom ofhisprisoncellhefoundsuchconsolationinhisRosaryashehadneverexperiencedbefore,andinhis inmosthearthefeltthatallwould yetbewellwithhim.
Aftertheexcitementoftheaffair hadsomewhatsubsided,theapparentguilelessnessoftheyouthfulprisoner,aswellashisignoranceof thelanguageandcustomsofthe country,helpedtocreateasentimentinhisfavour,andhissentence Waschangedtolifeimprisonment. Tonywasthankful;forlife,evenat thatplace,wassweettohim.He feltthathisprayerswerebeinganswered,andwasconfidentthatyet hewouldbefreefromthestain whichtarnishedhisname.Heexpressedhisbelieftohiscousin,who hadkeptintouchwithhim,and broughthimthenewsofhisrespite fromdeath.Thatwasagreatrelief totheelderTony;for,hardenedas hebadgrown,thethoughtofhis trustingkinsmangoingtodeathfor hisowncrimehadpreyedupon him.
Theyearshadpassedslowly,and theyouthbecameaman.Dayafter dayhemetwithaquietsmilethe tauntsofhiefellow-convicts,who sneeredathis"stringofbeads."His patience,however,graduallyturned theirsneersintorespectforhisfidelitytohisreligionundersuchcheerlessprospects.HewouldalwaysrecitehisRosary,hesaid andhe knewthatOurLadywouldnotpermithisnametogodownasamurderer,andthatingoodtimebe wouldhefreedfromallsuspicion.
ButhiscousinTony,havingsaved enoughtokeephimincomfortfor theremainderofhislife,afterten yearsreturnedtohishome,which wasinthesamelittlehamletasthat ofhisconvictcousin.Tohimthe
youngmanentrustedthedutyof breakingtohismotherthenewsof hispunishmentforacrimeforwhich hewasinnocent,andofurgingher tokeeponsayingtheRosary,for hiseventualjustification.Now,the oldermanhadimbibedenoughofthe irreligionofhisroughassociatesto makesuchanexhibitionofcourage obnoxiousand,withamuttered growlandsneeratthementionof theRosarywhichhehadlongsince failedtosay,promisedtoexecute thecommission.
Whenonthevery'eveningofhisre. turnhemadeouttothelittlehome amongthevinecladhillstotellthe newstothewidowedmother,he foundthefamilyuponbeadedknees, recitingtheRosary.Hestopped withatwingeofconscience,and foundhiscouragewaning.Themit day,however,hewentearlier,and wasreceivedwithsincerewelcome. Hesawtheunaskedquestionsinthe anxiousmother'seyes,and it hardtotellherthatherbelovedboy waseventhen,andwouldbef-)rthe restofhislife,inafelon'scellfor murder.Herfineoldfaceblancheda littleatthementionofsuchacrime; but,withasadsmile,sheshookber headandanswered mistake-aterriblemistake!My eywouldnotburntanybody.We willpraythathemayhereleased fromhisbondage,andthatthetrue culpritmayhebroughttorepentance.Andyou,whowerehisfriend, willjoinusinprayingforthisintention."
Hemurmuredsomeexcuse,andalmostranawayfromtheaccusing voicesofthenowtearfulfamily,as theysaid,withrenewedfervour, thatcomfortingprayer.But,tryas bewould,heseemedunabletoshut outfromhisunwillingearsthesteadydroneofvoices-nowswelling, nowwailingnowcomingfromthe littlehomeamongthebills,andnow breakingthroughhisdreams,as wavesfromafar-offshoreandhe knewthat'Tonywaseventhenrepeatingthoseprayersinanarrow
Theguiltymandailygrewmore wretchedasthevoiceofconscience grewstronger.Hefoundonlypain andfearinthelittlevillagechurch, andsohestayedaway-tothewonderofhisneighbours,andthepain andsurpriseofhispastor,whoremonstratedwithhim,buttono avail.Hetriedtoavoidthewidow'shome,butsomeimpellingforce seemedtodrawhimpast,whenshe andherchildrenwereassembledtogetherateveningprayer.Hefelt compelledtolistentothosepetitionsthattheinnocentmightbe freedandthattherealsinnermight beconverted.
Fiveyearsdraggedby,andthe wretchedmanhadbecomesomorosethathewasshunnedbyeverybody.Hewasstillastrangerto thechurch,andtheparishpriest weegreatlygrieved.Timeandagain hehadtriedtoregainthisstrayed sheep,onlytomeetwithsternrepulses.Hehadnotgivenup,however,butcontinuedtovisithimat regularintervals.
Finally,onedaythegoodpastor knockedasusualatthedoorofhis squalidbut,and,receivingnoresponse,pushedthedooropenandentered.ThereonthecotlayTony, thepictureofmiseryanddespair.It seemedhehadbeen,striekenbyaviolentfever,and,shunnedbyhisneighbours,hewaslefttodielikeadog, withnoonetohelphimorinquire abouthim.Therewasathankful noteinthevoicewithwhichheansweredthepriest,whoarrangedto havehintproperlycaredfor,and' thenhastilysummonedaphysician. Theceremonyofblessinganddistributingtheashes,aswehaveitat present,likemanyoftheotherceremoniesoftheChurch,comesdown tousfromtheearliestages.Itis probablethatitwasintroducedby theconvertsfromJudaism,orat leastinimitationofasomewhat similarpracticeinvogueamongthe chosenpeople.Likesomeofthe otherceremonies,too,ithasundergonecertainminorchangesbeforeassumingitspresentform.Theprincipalofthesewillhenoticedaswe proceed,

Soonothersofthefaithfuljoined thepenitentsinreceivingtheashes, partlyoutofhumility,andpartlyas amoreeffectualmeansofdoingpenancefortheirsinsandthenimherofthesecontinuedtoIncreaseas timewenton.LocalChurchauthoritiesnextdevotedtheirattentionto thematter.TheCouncilofBeneventurn,heldintheyear1091,decr,'ed thatall,clergyandlaity,menand women,shouldpresentthemselvesto hesignedwiththeashes.Otherchurchesfollowed,andbythethirteenth century'thecustombecameuniversal,andsoithascontinued.

Duringthedistributionoftheashes certainantiphonsfromtheScriptareandothersources,whichare calculatedtoawakenaspiritof penance,aresung.Thispartofthe ceremonyover,thepriestreturns tothealtarandrecitesthefollowingconcludingprayer"Grantus, 0Lord,tobeginourChristianwarfarewithholyfasts;thataswe areAbouttofightagainstthespirits ofwickedness,wemaybedefended bytheaidofself-denial.Through ChristOurLord.Amen."ThecelebrationoftheMassthenfollows.
