Howespeciallyisthistruewhenshe istwicehismother,inasmuchasshe notonlyintroducedhimtotime, butalsotoChristandeternity. Truemothersarenotselfish.Itis notwhollybecauseasonfailsus thatwemournmost,butbecausehis failuretousemphasisesamoreterriblefailure-thefailureoftheman himself.Forthemanwhofailshis mothermustfirstfailhimself,andit isthislossofhismanhoodthat breaksherheart,notthemerelack offealtytowardsherself,agonising thoughthatis.

Oneofthemostdisastrousfiresin thehistoryofBeverleyoccurredon Fridaynight,whenthepremisesof theCashDraperyCo.andtheBank ofAustralasia,togetherwiththeir contents,weretotallydestroyed, andMrDing'sofficewasleftwith onlythewallsstanding,inaddition' tootherseriousdamagetogoods, the'extentofwhichlenotatpresent ascertainable.Withinafewminutes oftheringingofthefirehell themainstreetwasthronged withhurryingpedestrians, andtherewasasceneofgeneral commotion.Itwassoonevident, however,thattherewasnoPossibilityofpreventingaveryseriousconflagration.TheVolunteerFire13rigadowasquicklyonthescene,but owingtotheinflammablenatureof boththebuildingandcontents,Or firehi.dalreadygot,afirmhold, findthedameswereleapingfromthe roof.

SeeingthattheCashDraperyCo's. premisesandthoseoftheBank ofAustralasiawerealreadydoomed, attentionwasdirectedtopreventing,asfaraspossible,thespread oftheflames.Bythistime.how ever.theheathailbecomeintense, andforttimetheRailwayHotel premiseswereinimminentdanger. Inconnectingthehosewithafire plugnearMillar's'TimberandTradingCo.'sofficesforthepurpose,of playingthewateruponthewallof thehotelfacingthetire,theplug wasdamaged,andthewaterranto wastealongthegutterinthedirer tionofthefireuntilitwasdammed attheculvertnearMrDing'soffice, anda"bucketbrigade"gottowork anddidgoodserviceinassistingthe firementoextinguishtheflames.

Thetirebrigade,assistedbymany willinghelpers,didgoodwork,handicappedastheywerebyaninefficientwaterpressure.Nobrigadein thecountrycouldhavesavedthe doomedbuildings,anditistotheir creditthatthetirewasnotofeven greaterproportions.

MrMcKenzie,oneofthemembers ofthefirmoftheCashDrapery.Co, badbeenintheofficewriting,and subsequentlyleavingthebuildingfor afewminutestogotothePostOfficeovertheway,alampwasleft hurningonatableintheroom,and whenhereturnedtheplacewasin flames.Thealarmoffirewasat onceraised,buttheinflammablenatureofthebuildinganditscontents actedasexcellentfueltothefire, andftwasquicklyrealisedthatthe premisesweredoomed.

There,thespeakergavesnap-shots fromsuchwritersasPatterson,Ogilvie,andMaryHannahFoote,showinghowdistinctlythegenuineAustenspiritpervadedtheirnotes.

Intouchingonourrealbeginnings inpoetry,hesaidthatnoname wasmorehonoured,inthatconnection,thanthatofourill-fatedSouthernsinger, ADAMLINDSAYGORDON.

Nonecouldreadhisversewithout beingthrilledandsaddened,firstly, by,themanlinesswithwhichit abounded,andsecondly,bythedeep melancholyofthemanwhichran throughallhewrote.Shellymust haveprophesisedtheeventofaGordon,whenhewrote:-

OneofGordon'ssweetestpoemswas writtenafewdaysbeforeheleft England.Itwasdedicatedintena'ly tothepoet'ssister,andinitweget glimpsesofthedeepemotionofthe man'sdisappointments.Wehearhim bringingbackthelostpartlikethis

WealsogetthesamedesporalentstrainswhenGordonspeaksofhis love.Thesaddenedtouchifthe man'sworkispresentedvividlyin hispatheticdescriptionofalover's parting.

Butsuchwouldneverbeaccomplishen,whilewecontentedourselvesin judgingourpoetsbytheircapacity tospeakofaracecoursecertainty, orthepriceofthefavourite.Yetwe wouldeveragreewithGordon"Nogamewaseverwortharap Forarationallimntoplay, Intowhichnoaccidentormishap couldpossiblyfinditsway."

AfterasurveyofmanyofGordon's works,touchingreferencewasmade tothepoet'ssadend,itbeingclaimedthathismindinurthaveriu-sed thestageofresponsibilitywhenhe toothislife.Hehaddone(-hough toherememberedbyeveryAustralian,forthesingingofourthat greatsongwasdueinthefullest measuretohimalone.

Wewereallthebetterasapeople forsuchsentiments,andtheywere themoretobeadmiredwhenwe knowtherewereonlytoomanypreparedtoridiculesuch.InhisglowingpicturesoftheAustralmonths, wegetthesamepuretone.SpeakingoftheChristmasmonthofDecember,Kendallsaid:-

SpeakingintheHouseofCommons lastmonth,thememberforClare saidhewasanxioustoremovean impressionwhichwascreatedinadvertentlybythememberforPontefract(Mr.Booth),who,referringto theoriginoftithes,wentsomewhat intotheearlyhistoryoftheCatholicChurch.Thehon.membertook thebookwhichhe(Mr.Redmond) thenhadinhishand,andreada Passagefromitwhichpurportedto beanepitomeoftheDecreeofPope CelestineIII.,andheasserted"that theDecreeauthorisedthepaymentof tithesnotonlyofwines,grains, fruits,andothermatters,butthat therewasintheDecreeanauthority thatthepoorwhobegaboutthe streetareobligedtopayone-tenth ofallthealmstheygot,andthat thecommonwomenlikewisepaya partoftheirinfamousgains."The statement(Mr.Redmondcontinued) thatthatwasapartofaDecreeof theirPopecreatedapainfulimpressionamongstmanyhon.membersontheIrishBenches,whowere somewhatstartledbythestatement, whichwasentirelyunexpected.He askedthehon.memberforPontefractifhewouldbekindenoughto allowhimtolookatthisauthority,andhewasgoodenoughtodo so,andhandedhimthisbook.What hehadfoundwasthat,insteadof containingacopyoftheallegedDecreeofPopeCelestineIII.,itwas, onthecontrary,atreatisebyan Italianpriestwhohadseparated fromtheCatholicChurch.Itwas translatedbyaMr.Tobias,Jenkins, andillustratedthatthepoorshould payone-tenthofalltheiralms,with notesbyagentlemanofthenameof AmelotdelaHoussaye.Hefound thatthestatementthatstartled themdidnotpurporttohetaken fromtheDecreeofthePopehut, havingenumeratedthearticlesupon whichtitheshouldbepaidintheDecreethewriterortheauthorofthe bookwentontosaythatcertain Canonistsappearedtohavegone muchfurther,andthenthestatementtowhichtheysomewhatobjectedwasreferredtoandread.Mr. Boothhadbeengoodenoughtoask himtomakethecorrection,andit wasquiteclearthatitwasaner-

Forsomeconsiderabletimeanefforthasbeenmadetogetanew ChurchforWestGuildford.TheCathole:sofWestGuildfordareforthe mostpartstrangerstoeachother, andhavecomefromdistrictswhere theyhadbutpooropportunitiesof practisingtheirreligion.Theresult isthatitisverydifficulttoarouse the'.toenthusiasminChurchmatters.ortosecureunitedactionamongstthem.Untilwegetanew CbarchinWestGuildford,anduntil we'tareamissiontobringourpropletogetherandtoarousethemto acenseoftheirduty,wedonot lc.okformuchimrrovementamongst the'atholicsinthiscentre,whichis otherwiseflourishing.FatherMorrie'seemstobeseizedofthisidea, andheisstormingtheheavensto getachurchinWestGuildford.He isT:tambitiousinhisideas,and hewouldhesatisfied,forastart, tczetalittleChurchthatwould C....61about£300. Latelyhehas coretogiveMassatWestGuildfordoneveryavailableoccasion, sad'certainlyh;svisitsandexhorted.ashavecausedconsiderableenthaPiFMamongsttheCatholics.He haspromisedtoraise£200himself ifthecatholicsofWestCuildford etailarocure£100beforetheendof Febraary.Thisofferhasbeentaken menthusiastically,andfourgentlemen-Messrs.C.Hanlon,V.Howe, TM'ilhooly.andM.Riordan-have undertakenacanvassofthedistrict. Itistoosoontopredicttheresult

l'hereportoftheinitialmeeting laldattheBishop'sPalaceonlast .Mondayevening,whichappearselsewhereinthisissue,givesreasonable groundforhopethatthecelebrationofIreland'sNationalFestival thisyearwilleclipseallprevious demonstrations.Lastyearandin 1911thesportsandotheradjuncts hadforobviousreasonstobeabandoned.Butthereisnoreasonwhy agrandorganisedeffortshouldnot bemadethisyeartorestorethe feastofIreland'sNationalApostle toitswontedsolemnityandimpressiveness.ThemeetingheldonMondaynightwasthoroughlyrepresentativeofalltheparishesbetween CottesloeandMidlandJunction. Messrs.DowlingandMonaghan,who camefromFremantleinresponseto theinvitationissuedinlastweek's "Record,"werecarefultoemphasisethefact,thatastheyhadnot beenofficiallyauthorisedtorepresentFremantle,theycouldnotin anywaybindtheparishionersof thePorttothrowintheirlotwith thepeopleofPerthandsuburbs.We hope,however,thatthepatriotic sentimentsexpressedbythetwoFremantlevisitorswillbeheartilyendorsedbythepeopleofFremantle andsuburbs.Amoresuitablespot forthejointcelebrationscouldnot befoundthanthesplendidlysituatedClaremontShow'Grounds.

Forthesecondtimewithin20 earstheelectorsofGreatBritain andIrelandhave,throughtheiraccreditedrepresentativesintheImperialHouseofCommons,declared withunmistakableemphasisthatthe PoliticaldestiniesoftheEmerald Isleshouldbeguided,notfrom Westminster,butfromthehallsof herancientParliamentinCollege Green."Thesincereandcourageous messageofpeace"(asWm.O'Brien Phrasesit)wascabledtotheends oftheearthlastweek,andthe "ExilesofErin"inthisSouthern Hemispherereceivedthegladtidings,thattheHomeRuleBillhad passeditsthirdreadingintheHouse ofCommonsby,thehandsomemajorityof110votes.

"Not,Angles,butangels,"saidSt. Gregory,whenhesawtheSaxon youthsin,theRomanmarket,and straightwayhewasseizedwitha longingdesirefortheconversionof theircountrymen,adesirewhichhe indeedrealisedthroughtheministry ofSt.Augustineandhiscompanions.St.Gregoryhadsetoutfor BritaintowinittoChrist,butthe voiceofGod,throughthevoiceof thepeople,recalledhimtoRome, andwhenshortlyafterhewaselevatedtothePapalthrone,he'was abletogiveeffecttohisdesireby sendingSt.AugustinetoEnBland, "for,"saidhe,"Alleluiamustbe sunginthoseparts."
