Therewasalargeandenthusiastic gatheringattheinauguralmeeting oftheGaelicSocietyofUniversity College,Dublin,recently,whenMiss NiRiainreadaninterestingpaper on"EducationandNationality."She saidthatsinceEnglishbecamethe languageoftheschoolsinIreland educationhadbeenturnedaway fromthingsspiritualandfromassociationwiththehistoryofthecountry.TheIrishlanguagewouldbring hackthecharacteristicsoftheirrace, anditwasthrougktheIrishlanguagethatIrelandasanationwould beputinitsproperplaceagain.In thecourseofthediscussionwhich followed,ProfessorBerginsaidhe wasafraidtheyweretoomuchinclinedtofindfaultwiththeeducationtheyhadandtoolittledisposed torecogniseitsmerits.Therewas nocountryintheworldinwhichthe neleweresatiafledwiththeeduce-

"Breaking-upDay"atthiswellknownschoolismarkedbyanExhibitionofPainting,PlainandFan..cyNeedlework,etc.,andalwaysattractsmanyvisitorseagertosee tasteandskilldisplayedinevery shapeandform.
Eachsucceedingyearseemsto crowntheprecedingone,andso thisyearbroughtfreshevidencesof talentandnewlaurelsfortheyoung aspirants,makingthemostofthe giftsbestowedonthem.
Thescholasticworkdonebythe schooliswellknown,andtheresultsofthepublicexaminations, publishedbythedailypapersduring theyear,testifytoitsexcellence.
Thevisitorsweregivenanideaof theworkdoneinthislinebyatabulatedformshowingarecordofthe successesobtainedbythepupils.
Otherfeaturesofthisyear's "breakingup"wereaXmasTree andaChildren'sStallinthe grounds.Thegiftsonbothwere thoseofmanykindfriends,chiefly theparentsofthechildren,anxious togivetheSisterstheopportunity ofdevelopingthegiftsandpowersof theirlittleones,andoffurthering thegreatworkofaperfectsystemof Christianandsecularinstruction,by securingfundstoprovidebuildings andappliancesforcarryingonthis extensiveandeverincreasingwork.
TheChristmasTreewasthedelight ofthelittleones,andwasstripped alltoosoonfortheirpleasure.
ThezealouseffortsofthegoodladiesofHighgateandthoseofthe littleladyworkersattheChildren's Stall,wonmanyalittlecoinfrom thegenerouspeoplepresent,andwe trustthatthebrickspurchasedfor theirnewschoolbytheirofferings willbesilentpleadingsto God,Who rewards"thewidow'smite."

ThepupilsofSt.Joseph'sSchool heldtheirannualschoolconcertin HisMajesty'sTheatreonWednesday,December4th,andadmirably sustainedthehighreputationwhich thisschoolhasgainedinentertainmentsofthiskind.Therewasa largeaudience,whichenthusiasticallyapplaudedeachitemonthevariedprogramme.Thepianoforteselectionsfortwo,three,andfour performerswereespeciallygood,and theviolinitemsbyMissesK.AndersonandT.O'Connorwerealso muchappreciated.Inadditionthere werethreeactionsongs,achorus, andtwodances.Butthemostconspicuousperformancesontheprogrammewereundoubtedlythefree gymnasticsandtheclub-swinging, whichwareadmirablycarriedoutunderthedirectionofLieutenantEminott,andreflectedthegreatestcreditbothonhimandontheperformers.

Amanonceplantedanacornina wastepatchofground,thetinyseed tookroot,and'inthecourseoftime anoaksprungupandgrewintoa statelytree.Theacornsfromthis oaktreesettledinthesoilaround andsprungupintheirturn.Theman died,andhisnamepassedaway,but beforehisboneshadentirelycrumbledintodustamightyforestofoak treescoveredthepatchofground inwhichthesingleacornwasplantedyearsbefore.
Youthisthespringtimeoflife, andchildhoodistheseedtime.The mindsofthechildrenaresoftand pliableaswaxtoreceiveanimpression,andhardasmarbletoretainit.ThePriest,theParentsand theTeacherscansowtheseedsof Faith,Hope,andCharity,purity andhonesty,truthandkindness,in thosefreshyounghearts,andGod alonecanmeasuretheabundant harvestofvirtuethatwillbereaped lateroninthesefieldsoflabour. OnSundaylast',December15th, about40littlechildrenfromSt.Joseph'sSchool,VictoriaSquare,had thehappinessofreceivingtheirFirst HolyCommunionattheCathedral. AftertheMass,anexcellentbreakfastwasprovidedfortheminthe school,forwhichthelittleones weremostgratefultothegoodSisters,whohadthussocarefullyattendedbothtotheirspiritualand corporalrefreshment.
Anexhibitionofpupils'workwas heldatSt.Brigid'sConvent,West Perth,onlastWednesdayafternoon, andevening.Afullreportwillappearinournextissue;butmeanwhilewetaketheopportunityof congratulatingtheSistersandthe childrenontheexcellenceofthe workdisplayed.Wefeelsurethat boththeparentsofthechildrenand thegoodSisterstowhomthosechildrenhavebeenentrusted,haveeveryreasontofeelproudoftheprogressmade.Wherealltheexhibits weresogood,titisdifficulttomentionanyparticularonewithout seemingundulybiassed.Several black-and-whitedrawingswereof exceptionalmerit,notablythose pourtrayingkittensanddogs,asalsotheseascapes.Otherexhibitsincludedappliqueandribbonwork, cushioncovers,tablecoversinstencilworkandapplique,andMountmellickstitchwork.Therewerealsosomefineoilpaintings.

TheofficialopeningofthenewSt. JohnofGodHospitaltookplaceon Sundayafternoon,and,despitethe -oppressiveweatherconditions,there wasalargeassemblageoffriends towitnesstheceremony.Itis17 yearslastmonthsincetheCommunityofSt.JohnofGodarrivedfrom WexfordattheinvitationofBishop (;ihneytotakeupHospitaland SchoolworkinthisState-theirfirst temporaryresidencebeinginAdelaideTerrace.TheoutbreakoffeveramongtheminersontheEasternGoldfieldsbroughtthedevoted SisterstoCoolgardie,wherethey remainedfortwoyears,andsubsequentlytoKalgoorlie,wherethey havecarriedontheworkoftheparochialschoolsaswellashospital work,withgreatsuccess,asDr. BarbertestifiedonSunday.
Fifteenyearsagoahospital,as wellequippedastheirlimitedmeans wouldpermit,waserectedatSubiaco,andthisoldbuildingnow givesplacetothenewandimposing structurewhichwasthrownopenfor inspectionlastSunday.Itisnoexaggerationtosaythatthereisno betterappointedorcommodiously situatedinstitutionofitskindin WestAustralia,andthepublicwho inspectedthewellventilatedand gorgeouslyfurnishedroomsonSundayhadalsothepleasureofhearing thewordsofunstintedpraisebestowedontheHospitalanditsSistersbytwonon-Catholicmedical men,Drs.TrethowanandBarber, whotestifiedtothecareandpatientattentionexhibitedbythenuns towardsthoseundertheircare.Drs. J.F.DeakinandH.C.Merryweatilerwerealsopresent.Amongthe clergywenoticedtheVeryRevs.P. Verling,V.G.,MonsignorBourke, DeanMartelli,P.J.Gibney,P. HisLordshiphavingblessedthe newbuilding,in'thecourseofashort practicalspeechsaid,inpartRev,Fathers,LadiesandGentlemen, -Itaffordsmeaspecial pleasuretobepresenthere thisafternoonattheopeningandblessingofthisHospitalbecausebytheancientlegislationof theChurch,hospitals,andlaterorphanages,wereplacedunderthejurisdictionoftheBishops.ABishop wasexpectedtohaveahospitalattachedtoeachCathedralChurch, andtheresultofthatlegislationie tobefoundinthefactthathospitalsinthemodernsenseofthe wordowetheirorigintotheCatholicChurch.Asplendidinstanceof comprehensiveCatholiccharityis foundintheworkofSt.Ephraem, whoduringtheplagueatOdessain 375provided300bedsforthesufferers.Themostfamousfoundation wasthatofSt.BasilatCaesenea, incappadocia,in369,whichtookon thedimensionsofacitywithitsregularstreets,buildingfordifferent classesofpatientsanddwellingsfor physiciansandnurses.St.Gregory

ThelateMr.Buckwas59yearsof age,andwasgenerallyrecognisedof. possessingahardy,vigorousconstitution.However,oflatebehadnot beenlookingquitehimself,andon Sundayweeklasthetookillrather suddenly,thefollowingdaypermittinghiswifetocallinDr.Nutting. The.physiciandiagnosedthecaseas oneofacuteEnglishcholera,upon whichcomplicationsofthekidneys andheartsetin.Everythingpossiblewasdone;butDr.Nuttingheld outpracticallynohope,asthepatientquicklylapsedintoasemicomatosestate,andcouldnotrespondtothetreatment.Thewhole ofthefamily,comprisingfivesons andthreedaughters,allgrownup, withtheirmother,weregatheredtogether,andwerepresentatthebedsidebeforetheend,whichoccurred onTuesdayafternoonlastweek.
Thefuneraltookplaceonthefollowingday,whenalargeandrepresentativeconcourseattendedtopay alastsadmarkofrespecttothe memoryofawhiteman,whose straightforwarddealingsandupright principles,hadgainedforhimthe esteemofhisfellowmen.TheRev. FatherMoloneyofficiatedatthe grave.

TheExecutiveCommittee,insubmittingarecordofitsworkforthe yearendedOctobei31st,1912,is onceinureabletocongratulatethe annualmeetingupontheadvancein theusefulnessandimportanceofthe AustralianCatholicTruthSociety. Duringtheyearthemoneyentrusted totheSocietywassocarefullyand wiselyspentontheobjectforwhich itwasgiventhat,notwithstanding theincreaseinwagesandthecostof production,thebalance-sheetshows acreditatprofitandlossof£14 5s,afterprovidingforallcontingencies.
Duringtheperiodunderreview24 distinctpamphlets,ofahighorder ofmerit,havebeenpublished,and ofthesepamphlets181,500havebeen printed,asagainst104,550forthe precedingyear.Sincetheinception oftheSociety,eightyearsago,over 1,000,000publicationshavebeencirculated,and52,596copiesoftheSociety'sl'rayerBookhavebeensold. ThefactthatthemeritoftheSociety'spublicationsisrecognised throughouttheEnglish-speaking worldshouldgiverisetosearchings ofheartandcompunctuousvisitings athome.Lastyearitwasourpleasingdutytoplaceonrecordthe cheeringnewsthattheInternationalCatholicTruthSocietyofAmerica,'whichisdoingnobleworkin defendingtheinterestsoftheChurch fromtheslandersandcalumnious misstatementsofherenemiesinthe anti-CatholicPress,orderedalarge supplyofourpamphlets,andthat anotherCatholicpublishingsociety-theAngelPress,Boston-hadrequestedpermissiontoreprintour booklets.
Thisyearwehavetoaddanother markofappreciation.Afewweeks agotheSecretaryoftheCatholic ReadingGuildofEngland,asociety whichhasorganisedonalargescale thesaleofCatholicpamphletsat thechurchdoors,inthestreetsand highways,expressedastrongdesire toreceiveourpamphletsandcreate ademandforthemalloverEngland.
"Weappreciate,"writesthetlecretaryoftheReadingGuild,"the forcefulstyleofyourwriters,and thebold,cleartypeandsub-heads youuse,sohighlythatwegreatly hopeitwillhepossibleforustoget anarrangementbywhichwecancirculateyourliteratureinthiscountry,inadditiontothatofourown ('.T.S."Thistestimonytothevalue ofourpublicationsishighlyencouragingi6viewoflocalapathy,and provesthatthereisnoneedforour Societytoputupanoticesimilar tothatwhichissaidtohaveadornedthepianoina,salooninaWesternStateofAmerica"Don'tshoot atthepianist; heisdoinghis best."
Thislistshowshowmiserablyinadequateisthemeasureofsupport giventotheSocietyoutsideVictoria,whilsttheCatholicpeopleof ourownState,withitssmalltotal of403subscribers.seemtoforget thatthereisintheirmidstaSocietywhich,duringthepasteight years,hasbeenengagedinaveritableapostolateinthecauseofreligionandhistorictruth.
Ithaslongbeenthewishofour Societytoextenditsworkbythe publicationofsixpennybooksto meettheattackwhichisnowbeing madeinvariousdirections,notonly upontheCatholicChurch,but.upon theveryfoundationsoftheChristianfaith.Rationalismofthemost extremetypeisnowbeingpropagatedinvariousways,butespeciallyby theRationalistPressAssociation, whichhasissued2,000,000volumes, thesalesofwhicharenotconfined toGreatBritain,buthaveextended towherevertheEnglishlanguageis spoken.Thedangerofsuchpropagandistworkcannotbeover-estimated,andthenecessityfordoing somethingtomeetitshouldbefully realisedbyCatholics.Itistheissuingbyhundredsandthousandsof booksofthisstampthatremoveso manyoutsidetheconsciousofChristianityaltogether.
Themostobviouswayofcombatingthisevilisawidediffusionof suitableCatholicliterature,producedatpopularprices,andthiscannotbeeffectedunlessfundsaresuppliedwithwhichtocarryoutthework.
Thematterisinthehandsofthe clergyandlaity,anditistothem weappealformoregenerous,more constantsupport,sothatthisyear's workmaytakeonwiderproportions, andspreadtohithertountilledfields.
Inconclusion,wehavetoextend ourheartfeltthankstothewriters whohavegivenusfreelyoftheir best,especiallytothelaywriter"MiriamAgatha"-whohassuccessfullysolvedthedifficultyofwriting forchildrentothePress,both('atholicandsecular,forthepublicity givento'ourmeetingsandpublications,andlastlytothe('atholicFederation,foritspromiseofaidto maketheneedsofourSocietymore widelyknown,andtowinfreshrecruitsforthelabourofcoming years.
