ABlueBookjustissuedgivesstatisticsforthenumberofpersons killedbywildanimalsandsnakesin BritishIndiafrom1880to1910.The figuresshow,asusual,thatthetiger istheanimalmostdestructiveto humanlifeitisresponsiblefor38 percent.ofthetotalnumberof deathscausedbywildanimalsinthe lastfiveyears,leopards,wolvesand bearsaccountingfor16.12,and 4 percent.respectively.Elephantsand hyenasaretwootherclasseswhose ravagesaredistinguishedinthereturns.Ofthe629deathsattributed to"otheranimals,"244areassignedtoalligatorsandcrocodiles,51to wildpigs,16tobuffaloes,24towild dogs,and223tounspecifiedanimals. BrotherTreacyandhiscompanions, however,bydiligentcanvassing,soon obtainedthatamount,andwereenabledtoopentheirschoolinJanuary,1869,withanattendanceofabout200boys.tinderthesplendid teachingandexampleoftheBrothers,theseboysgrewupmanly,intelligent,andindustrious,bringing creditontheirteachersbytheirexemplaryCatholiclives.

HewasafterwardsappointedLocal SuperioroftheSchoolsoftheBrothersinCarlow,whichpositionhe filledwithconspicuoussuccess. Intheseearlydays,theChurchin Australiahadverymanydifficulties tocontendagainst,nottheleastof thembeingthelackofefficientteachingfortheyoung;andAustralian prelates,seeingtheenormousinfluenceforgoodexercisedbytheChristianBrothersinIreland,werenot slowtorecognisewhatagreatadvantageitwouldbetohavethese zealousteachersamongthem.Most Rev.Dr.Goold,firstBishopofMelbourne,wasthefirsttoappealto the7,nperior-GeneraloftheOrderto sendoutacommunityofBrothers tothatcityandwhen,owingto thescarcityofBrotherswhocould hesparedforthework,hisappeal metwithnosuccessforatime,he neverceasedhiseffortsuntilhehad finallyappliedtothePropagandain Romeforthefulfilmentofhiswish. Asaresult,thePropagandaasked theSuperiorGeneraltoaccedeto Dr.Goold'srequest.
Accordingly,inlick,theSuperiorGeneralchoseBrotherTreacyasthe onemostfittedtolc-L(1theburden someworkinfar-oftAustralia.Certainlynobetterchoicecouldhave beenmadeforBrotherTreacy,then intheprimeoflife,hadthestrength andtheintellecttograpplewithand overcomeeverydifficulty,andmanage successfullyallaffairs,howevercomplicated,whichmightdevolvemain him.
Theschoolhadnotlongbeenopenedwhenameetingwasheldforthe purposeofaccordingapublicreceptiontotheBrothers,andraising fundstoprovidethemwithasuitablepermanentresidence.'Themeeting,whichWILE;presidedoverbythe Bishop,provedmostenthusiasticand sympathetic.Nearly£1,100waswade up,andthis,augmentedbytheen ergyofBrotherTreacyandhiscornpanione,ingoingaroundamongst thepeople,enabledafineblockof landtohepurchasedatthe'corner ofVictoriaParadeandFlades-street, EastMelbourne. Averyhighprice (C3,000)hadtohepaidforthis block,andasaconsequencenota singlepennywasleftforbuilding purposes.ButBrotherTreacy,with hisusualenergyandoptimism,was notdiscouraged.RelyingontheassistanceofGod,andthegenerosity ofthepeopleofAletoria,hecourageouslyfacedthedifficultywhichconfrontedhim,andheandtheother Brothers,bypersistenteffort,raised enoughfundstogonnwiththebuildingoftheirCollege.Thefoundation stonewaslaidinNovember,1869, andonthelastSundayofJanuary, 1871,thenewschoolwasblessedby BishopGoold,Theschoolopened withaboutahundredpupils.The followingyearthewholedebtof C3,301)waswipedoff,andthusBrotherTreacyandhisfellow-workers, whohaularrivedinAustraliaabsolutelypenniless,couldnowshow buildingscostingthousandsofpounds andentirelyfreefromdebt.
TheSt.VincentdePaul'sBoys' irphanagewasthenextobjectof theenergiesofBrotherTreacy.BisLop(1001(1hadrequestedtheBrothirstotakeoverthemanagementof theboys,inordertorelievethe SistersofMercy,whohadchargeof boththeboysandthegirls.TheOrphanagewasindebttotheextent ofthreethousandpounds.Moreover, thefewnessoftheBrothers'nun' herswasaverygreathandicap.
BrotherTreacy'snextworkwas thefoundingofaCollegeinAdelaide. Thiswasin1880,andjustashehad metwithtrialsandlaboriouswork inVictoriaandQueensland,sotoo thediscomfortshehadtoendurein thecountrydistrictsofSouthAustralia-hickofproperfood,wretched accommodationinhutsandsheds, longjourneysonhorseback-wereen'nightodiscourageanyonebuta manofBrotherTreacy'sdetermination.Hereceivedgeneroussupport fromthemenonthelandandin thecity,andwasabletoreturnto Melbournewithyetanothergreat workaccomplished.
tfptothistime,WesternAustraliahadnotcomeunderthescopeof theworkoftheChristianBrothers. AlltheotherStateshadschoolsand orphanages,andtherewasalsoa schoolatDunedin,NewZealand. WesternAustraliaalonecouldboast ofnone.Infact,thisStatewasthen verylittleknownintheEastern States,anditwasonlythediscoveryofgoldthatturnedmen'seyes towardsthe"GoldenWest."With theincreaseinpopulation,Catholic schoolsbecameallthemoreurgentlynecessary,andattheinvitation ofBishopGibney,BrotherTreacy visitedtheWestandmadearrangementsforthefoundationofaCollege.Asweallknow,itssuccess hasbeenphenomenal.ThefineCollegewhichweseeonSt.George's Terraceisoneofthelargestand bestconductededucationalestate lishmentsinAustralia,anditsstudentshavemorethanheldtheirown withthoseintheotherStates.The boysoftheWestshouldeverhe gratefultothefounderoftheirCollege,whentheyconsiderthegreat educationaladvantagestheypossess.
Ontheadviceofhisphysicians,he soughtawarmerclimate,andwent toNudgeeCollege,foundedbyhimself,nearBrisbane.Herehebecame alittlebetterandmorecheerful,and evendidsomeout-doorworkonthe largefarmattachedtotheCollege. Workseemedpartofhisnature.But aftersometime,heagainbecame weak,andhadtobeconveyedtothe MaterMisericordiaeHospitalofthe SistersofMercy,Brisbane,wherehe improvedsomuchthathewasremovedtotheBrothers'Collegeof St.Joseph,inGregoryTerrace.The physicianswhoexaminedhimconcludedthathewassufferingfrominternalcancer,andcouldnotlivebeyondthreeweeksorso.Brother Treacyimmediatelycommencedto preparefordeath-surelynodifficult matterforonewhosewholelifehad butoneendinview-thegloryof GodandtheChristianeducationof theyoung.Hereceivedthelast Sacramentswithfervouranddevotion,andafterlingeringforafew days,quietlypassedaway."Never," saidoneoftheBrotherswhowasin constantattendanceonhim,""did canonisedsaintdieahappierdeath." Duringthepastfewmonthscruel andmisleadingstatementshavebeen madeabouttheAboriginalnatives ofWesternAustralia.InbothHouses ofParliament,aswellasinthepublicpress,assertionshavebeenmade that-tosaytheleastofthem-reflectverylittlecreditontheintelligence,theexperience,ortheobservationofmeninhighplaces.Theold bogey,thatthenativesareincapableofacceptingthebenefitsofcivilisationandtheblessingsofChristianity,hasbeentrackedandcapturedandexposedtimeandagain. Andyetitwasunblushinglybrought forwardoflatebymenofdifferent politicalopinions,menwho-unless theireyeswereclosedortheirreasoningtemporarilysuspended-must havewitnessedlivingpracticalrefutationsofthecalumniestheyuttered againsttheWestAustralianAborigines.

HisLordshipmotoredbacktoBusBeltonfortheeveningdevotions. Hereagaintherewereevidentsigns ofunusualpreparations forthe numberofthoseassembledwasso largethatitwasnecessarytohold thedevotionsinthespaciousschoolroominsteadofinthelittleChurch. 47candidateswereconfirmed.
OnMondaytheBishopvisitedNannup,wherehe'wasverywarmlygreetedbytheCatholicresidents.Eveningdevotionswereheldinthehall at8p.m.,afterwhich22candidatesreceivedConfirmation.Apleasingfeatureofthefunctionwasthe excellentsingingofsomebeautiful CatholicHymnsbythelocalchoirMrs.Kearneypresidingattheorgan. HavingcelebratedMassat6.30on Tuesdaymorning,HisLordshipleft forCapel.Hereagaintheevening devotionswerewellattended,and15 candidateswereconfirmed.
AtNannupandCapelthepeople aremostanxioustohavenewchurcheserected.HisLordship,who highlyapprovesoftheirzealousdesires,encouragedthemtopractical efforts,andpromisedliberalassistanceineachcase.

TheGuildfordBazaar,whichclosedintheVaudevilleTheatreonlast Fridaynight,wasamagnificentsuccessmusically,sociallyandfinancially.InfournightstheBazaarrealised£2075s6d.Theresultcameas asurprisetoeveryone,butespeciallytocertaincritics,-whoclaimed thattheGuildford,Catholicswere incapableofachievingsuccesswhen lefttothemselves.Somepeoplegot theideathatthepeopleofGuildford-eventheCatholics-areslow, conservativeandselfish.Itis strangehowsuchideasshouldbeentertained,becausetheCatholicsof Guildfordhaveatalltimesworked generouslyandharmoniouslyforeverythingoriginatedforthewelfare oftheparish,notwithstandingthat theirshareofthespoilswassmall. However,.nowthattheyareontheir owntheyhavegivenaclinchinganswertotheircritics,andtheyhave givenproofthattheyareprepared andwillingtoholduptheirendof thestickinthe"HomeRule"scheme thathaslatelycomeintooperation intheparish.Whenweconsiderthe fewCatholicswhoareinGuildford, andthattheyonlyhadamonthin whichtopreparefortheBazaar,the resultisverysatisfactoryandencouraging.Thissuccesswill'nspire themwithconfidenceandcourage, anditwillalsodogoodtotheir friendlyrivalsinMidland,becauseit willshowthemthattheymustbe upanddoingiftheywishtoretain theirgoodnameforleadinginall worksintheparishwhichcallfor energy,unityandgenerosity.

L.Owen,W.L.Marsh,andW.J. Norrie.AtthegravesidewerenoticedrepresentativesofallBunhury publicbodies,creedsandclasses.The Revs.Scott-ClarkeandE.crane,alsotheRevs.S.B.FellowsandH. Sir,-Iwasindeedmorethaninterestedinthelifesketchofthelate MotherMaryoftheCrossinthelast issueofthe"Record,"becauseIwas oneoftheveryfirstpupilsofthe Orderfoundedbythatgreat,good woman,whoestablishedaconvent andahomefororphans,aswellasa schoolcalledSt.Mary'sSchool, whichisnowSt.Mary'sChurch,on thesouthsideoftheBrisbaneRiver, inQueensland.Infact,theCatholic Faithintheveryearlydaysof SouthBrisbane,waspracticallynursedandnourishedbytheOrderof theSistersofSt..Joseph.Letmetell youthatIspentthreeyearsofmy childhoodwithinthewallsofthe sacredconvent,andveryprobablyif itwerenotforthathappyeventI maynothaveretainedevenwhat littleFaithisinme.Brisbanethen musthavebeenbadlyoffforCatholicschools.Myfatherhadatthis timekepttheoldSt.Patrick'sTaverninQueen's-street,buthewould nothavehischildrenbroughtupin it,sohesenttwoofus,onefour yearsofageandtheotherfive,to theSistersofSt.-Joseph,Lindweremainedthereforfullythreeyears,so thatIshouldatleastknowsomethingaboutthesegoodSisters.There herefully100childreninthe('onventitself,mostlyorphans.Infact, fthinkatthetimeweweretheonly twointheConventwhowerenot orphans.AtSt.Mary'sSchoolitself alargenumberofdayscholarsattended,andIdonotknowofany otherCatholicschoolontheSouth ftrishanesideexceptSt.Mary's.The oldSt.Mary'sis,ofcourse,gone, butSt.Mary'sinitsplaceto-dayis secondonlytotheCathedralinBrisbane.TalkingofScotchCatholics AfamilynamedCarmichaels,two brothers,livedrightatthebackof theConvent.Theywereverythrifty
andhumblemen.Icanremember themturningwiththeoldfashioned lathetablelegsandvariouslittle joinerywork.IamsuretheCarmichaelswerethenverypoor, butpoorandallastheywere,the SistersofSt.Josephgotalltheir wastetimber,whichtheyusedfor firewood,andIamafraidthatifit wasnotforthislittlecharityonthe partofJimmyandBillyCarmicLael theNunswouldhavebeenbadly pinchedforwood.TheCarmichaels werethemainstaysofSt.Mary's, oldandnew,anditwastheircheque helpedtobuildthenewchurchwhich adornsthesouthsideto-day.From turningtablelegs,theCarmichael. becamethebiggestsawmillersin Brisbane,andanyonewhoknows Brisbanecantellyouthat,sothere ismoreScotchFaithforyouwith itsattendantreward.Someyears ago,Iagainmetthe'OrderinSouth Australia,andIwasquitesurprised thattheNunsthereknewallmyformerteachers.ButnowIknowthe fullhistoryoftheOrderIquiteunderstand.IsawthesepoorNunsin theirtrouble,althoughitwasalways amysterytomeuntilrecently.I sawsomeofthosekindfaceswhichI knewsowellworkinginshops.Iwas surethattheywereonceNunsinSt. Mary's,butnowIamsurethatthese braveladieswerefightingandmaintainingtheOrdertowhichtheywere somuchattached.

Theneedofprovidingaremedyfortheirchildren,andachurch,and,so theindustrialunrestismakingitselffarastheCardinalcoulddiceover, feltineverydirection,saysawriterheismakingasmuchbytheprofitintheLondon"CatholicTimes,"sharingmethodasacapitalistwould andthoughtfulmenwhohavethe bythemethodofendeavouringtoexfareofthepeopleatheartaregiv-tractthemostworkfortheleast ingitcloseattention.Ithinkmostwagesfromhisemployee. people,intheseislands,includingthe Thevalueofthepartnershipand majorityoftheworkers,aregladtoprofit-sharingsystemcannot,Ithink, seethatecclesiasticsaretakingabeover-estimated.Thissystemgives practicalinterestinthesubject. amanthefeelingwhenheisworkingforafirmthattheworkisbeingdoneforhimself,andtherecould benomoreeffectivestimulusofenergy.ArchbishopHealyremarkedat themeetingoftheCatholicTruth Societythathewasdelightedatthe spreadoftheagriculturalmovement bywhichthetenantfarmerswere enabledtobecomeownersoftheir farms.Heknewthattheconsciousnessofthepossessionofthesoil theycultivatedworkedwondersin encouragingtheirindustryandmakingthemhappierandmoreanxious togetthebestoutoftheirland.BeforeMr.Gladstonetookinhandthe taskoflandreforminIrelanditwas notanuncommonexperiencetofind inBritishjournalsthereproachAgainstthetenantsthattheydidnot doenoughtoimprovetheland.The explanationwasthatinthosedays thelandlordraisedtherentonimprovements.Sinceland-purchasehas madethetenantsownersthereproachisnolongerheardorread. Everybodyadmitsthatthenewlandownersworkhardforthemselves. Ifthetoilersbecomepartnersin industrialconcerns,theconviction, nowsostronglyfeltbymanyof theworkers,thattheinterestsof Capitalareantagonistictothoseof Labourwoulddisappear.Thethanks bothofmestereandworkersaredue totheCardinalandtheArchbishop forusingtheirgreatinfluenceinfavourofthesystem.Thequestionis howcanitheextended.Itiswellto recommendtheownersoflargeindustrialestablishments,asArchbishopHealydoes,totaketheir workmenintopartnership,andIfeel quitesureitwouldbetotheiradvantagetoadopttherecommendation,butIfearthatifemployersare lefttothemselvesthesystemwill neverbecomegeneral.
ThissignofthetimesisrecognisedalikebyCatholicandnon-Catholic.Noticewastakenofitatthe annualmeetingoftheCatholicTruth SocietyofIreland,andalsobyspeakersattheChurchofEngland's Men'sSocietyinLeedsonThursday, the17thOctober.ArchbishopHealy, thePresidentoftheIrishCatholic TruthSociety,saidtheunrestwas creepingintoIreland.wasshowing itselfinthetownsandeveninruraldistricts,anditwastimeforall whohadthegoodofthecountryat hearttomeetthedifficultiesthat arose.TheAnglicanBishopofHull, inanaddress,attheChurchofEngland'sMen'sSociety,saidtheagitationamongstthemassesofthepeoplewasforopportunitiesforafuller, andtruer,andbetterhumanlifeand forhomesinwhichchildrenshould bebroughtupinhealthanddecency.
