LittleSistersofthePoor celebratetheirGoldenJubileeinGlasgow
SOMEINTERESTINGFACTS. TheGlasgowcommunityofthe LittleSistersofthePoorcelebrated thesemi-centenaryoftheirestablishmentinGlasgowlastmonth.Fifty yearsago,ninemembersoftheOrder,ontheinvitationofthethen BishopofGlasgow,BishopMurdock, weresentfromtheparenthouse, nearRennesinBrittany,toestablishinGlasgowthegoodworkwhich hadbeensosuccessfullyinitiatedin France.TheyfirstestablishedthemselvesinahumbleresidenceinWilson-street,Glasgow,butheretheir 114commodationwasverylimited,and theycouldadmitonlyaveryfew destituteoldpeople.Atthatperiod Catholicismwasinaverybackw:ird stateinGlasgow.Anti-Catholicprejudicewasacute,andtheLittleSiserswerethefirstmembersofareligiouscommunitytoweartheirreligiousgarbinthepublicstreet.Naturallytheyatfirstattractedagood dealofattention,hut,astheirwork becameknown,curiositywaschaagedintoadmiration,andProtestants aswellasCatholicsreadilyrecognisedthetrulyChristiansentiments whichanimatedthem,andcontributedwillinglytoaidthemintheir work.Aftercontinuingtheirlabours forabouteighteenmonthsinthe veryrestrictedsphereofactionpermittedbytheirWilson-streetpremises,theSisterswere.throughthe goodofficesofBishopMurdoek,successfulinsecuringthebuildingat GarngadHillwhichhadhitherto beenoccupiedbytheSistersofMercy.Heretheywereabletoaccommodateaboutfortyoldpeople.By degreesthescopeoftheirlabourexpanded,andadditionalbuildings arosetomeettheirgrowingrequirements.Atthepresenttimethey accommodate265oldpeople-menand women.Quiteanumberoftheold peoplehavepassedtheirninetieth yearandoneoldwomanisnowin heronehundredandfourthyear.
OftheSisterswhooriginallyfoundedtheGlasgowinstitution,onlyone nowremainsinthecommunityat Garngad-SisterMarie.1oseph,who sometimeagocelebratedthejubilee ofherreligiousprofession,andwho still,notwithstandinghereighty summers,takesanactivepartin theworkoftheHome.SheisanativeofGermany. Thesermonatthereligiouscelebrations,presidedoverbyArchbishopMackintosh,waspreachedby VeryRev.CanonRitchie.ThepreacherbrieflyrecapitulatedtheprincipalfeaturesofinterestinconnectionwiththehistoryoftheLittle SistersinGlasgow.Theyhadnot metthere,hepointedout,thesame oapositionaswasdirectedagainst thelaboursoftheOrderinLondon andEdinburgh.OnlysueslitdanythinguntowardhappenedtotheSistersinGlasgow.In1879twoof then;wereInistltalinthestreetbya bigotedmob.Theywerearrestedon achargeofbegging,buttheirreleasewasorderedbythepresiding magistrate,whopointedoutthatthe lawsagainstmendicitywerenotdirectedagainstthecharitablework carriedonbytheSisters.Thenotorietyofthatcaseonlyhelpedto increasethesympathyoftheCatholiccommunityforthosewhowere carryingonsuchasidendidworkat GarnsailHillandtoincreasethe amountofeharitablecontributions s,ilk+thesistersreceived.
generalworkoftheOrderoftheLittleSisters.ThatOrderhadbeeninitiatedbythreecharitableladiesin Brittanyin1839.Fromthishumble beginningtheOrderhadgrown,untilatthepresentdayitwasrepresentedinallthegreatcitiesofthe world.Therewerenow5,679Little SistersdevotingtheirlifetotheserviceofGodandHispoor.Theyhad established305homesfortheaged poor,inwhich50,000oldpeoplesere enjoyingallthecomfostsofhome life.ThelifeoftheLittleSisters wasoneofcontinualprayerand goodwork.Theirswasindeeda highandholyvocation.Womenbelongingtoallranksofsocietyhad enteredtheOrder--mistressesandservants,therichandthepoor,butall wereanimatedbythesamespiritof Charitywhichboundthemtogether inthebondsofsisterhoodanddevotiontothepoorandmadethem onereligiousfamily.Therewereno gradationsofrankintheOrder. Therewasonegoodmotherwhodirectedthelaboursofthecommunity, alltheotherswereSistersthere aterenolaySistersandnoservants. AllthelaboursoftheHomewere carriedonbytheSisters,andthei, too,providedthenecessariesoflife. Intheinfirmary,inthekitchen,everywherethroughouttheHomethey wereunceasinglyactiveandalways cheerfulandhopeful.Throughthe busywaysofthecitytheywent seekingthatwhichwasnecessaryfor thehumblewantsoftheinstitution fromrichandpooralike.Theymight nothavemorethansufficientforthe day'srequirements,buttheyhad faiththatGodwouldprovideforthe morrow.Theyhadnoanxietyfor thefuturetheygatheredinthe niannaeachday.TheydependedentirelyontheProvidenceofGod; theywouldacceptnoendowments forthemaintenanceofthepoor,no annuities,nosecureregularrevenue. Theironlysecuritywastheirfaith inGnd,andHehadneverfailed them.

Immoralitywastheprecursorofinfidelity,andthehistoryofthe Churchsubstantiatedthatfact.No countryhadeverlosttheFaiththat wasnotutterlydemoralisedandcorrupt.

Theirorganisationwouldtakeupthe wholecityintheprogressoftheir work,andtheirmovementwouldnot fail.TherewasnopowerinIreland, exceptthepeoplethemselves,interestedinthematterwhocouldpossiblydefeatthemovement.

Mr.Heitmannsaidheusedto thinkthatwhentheyoncegotaPublicHealthActonthestatutebooks theywouldmakegreatprogressin stampingoutvariousdiseases,but hemustconfessthathehadbeen greatlydisappointedwiththeresult oftheirPublicHealthActandits administration.Thesameoldsystemappearedtobeadoptedinconnectionwithpublichealth,thesame lackofinterestseemedtobeshown bymembersofpublicinstitutions andbytheGovernment.andhewas forcedtoconfessthattherewaslittlesystemintheadministrationof theirPublicHealthDepartmenttoday. Hereferredadverselytothecall-
stated,hadtheeffectofinterfering withthebrain,andhadadirectre lationtotheinsanestatistics.They werecryingoutforimmigrants,but theyweredestroyingthebestimmigrantstheycouldhave.Astheresultofthereportshehadreadhe wasforcedtothebeliefthatthe tradeofsellingthedrugstowhich hehadreferredwascarriedonby registeredchemists.Hehadsetout, withanothergentleman,toprove whetherornotsuchwasthecase, buttheybothhadto"pullout"in theveryearlystagesoftheirinquiry. Recently,however,hehadagainendeavouredtosecureinformation,and hadaskedtheGovernmentwhether theywouldallowthePublicHealth Departmenttomakeinvestigations Theyhadmadeinvestigations,and heregrettedtosaythatthereport orovedthatthebusinesstowhichhe hadreferredwas,carriedontoavery greatextent.Withoutanycomment onthepeoplewhocarriedonthis trade,hewantedtoreadthereport totheHouse,withaviewtoappealingtothepeopleandtothechemiststhemselvestodiscontinueatrade thatwassoinjurioustotheindividualwomenaswellastotheState.

Thereportwasaddressedtothe HonoraryMinister(Mr.W.('.Ang- ingofChineseherbalistsandtooth-win),andstated,interfilial:-"Inall ers,who,hesaid,wereallowedto42visitsweremadeto37chemists, performtheirquackeryuponthehit-theshopsbeingprincipallyinthe manbody.Speakingofmedicalinmetropolitanarea,whileafewvisits stitutions,hesaidthatheknewofwerepaidtoshopsinKalgoorlieand nosuchinstitutiontowhichpeopleBoulder.Ofthe37chemists23supcouldgowithsafety.Inspeakingplieddrugsafewoftheserequired thatnighthewastryingtosavethesomepersuasionafewwerekeento peoplefromthemselves.Hehopeddobusiness;otherssuppliedthede- thattheMinisterwouldseethatthesireddrugsastheywouldsupplyany clauseoftheBilldealingwithquack-ordinaryrequirement.Sixwerewill cryandwithpatentmedicineswoulding,incertaincircumstances,tosup beadministeredwithafirmhand.Heply,butforvariousreasonsdidnot hadreadinanAmericanjournaladosoofthesesixthemajorityconstatementtotheeffectthatsome-sideredtherisktoogreat.Twowere thingliketwentymilliondollarsevidentlysuspicious,andrefusedto werespentintheUnitedStatesan-supply.Sixpositivelydeclined.In nuttilyonquackconsumptivecures,fivecasesasecondvisittothesame anditwouldbeinterestingtoknowpremiseswasmade.Ofthesefive whatthepeopleofthatcountryspentchemists,twoonthesecondvisit onpatentmedicinesofdifferentsuppliedafurtherandapparently kinds.Byfraud,lying,andadverbs-strongermedicinethreeonbothocingpeoplewereledtobelievethateasionsrefusedtosupplyone,tho- thenostrumofferedtothemwereughpositivelyrejectingbusinesson perfectlyharmless,whentheyoftenthefirstvisit,onthesecondoccascontainedmanydangerousdrugs.ion,whentherequestwasmadeina

thenappealedtomembersofthe Chambertoendeavourtobringaboutsomemethodofdealingwiththis verydelicateandserious,question, andtotakeaninterestinthismost importantphaseofpublichealth.He appealedtothepublicmenoutside whocontinuallypreachedthatthey shouldadoptahighstandardof morals,totheprominentmembersof thechurches,andtheministers,to assistinpreventingthecontinuance ofthesedeadlypractices.Hewanted toappealtothePressofWestern Australiatosetitselfagainstthe traffic.Hewantedtoappealtothe chemists'ofthiscountry,butasa matteroffactherecognisedthat backbeyondthechemisthimselfexistedtheevil.Hewantedtoappeal tothesegentlemen,recognisingthat theyhadhadtheopportunityofmixinginthebestcompany,andofhavingthebestpossibleeducation,or atalleventsafirst-classeducation. Heappealedtothenationalspirit andtothepatriotismthatheknew therewasinthebreastofevery AustraliantopreventasfaraspossiblethispracticethatAustralia mightcomeintoherown,thather populationmightincreaseasit ought,thatherwomenmightbeless injuredthantheywereatpresent, andthatmanyhundredsofchildren hornshouldnotbeblightedthrough outtheirlivesowingtotheuseof thesedrugsbytheir.mothers.In conclusion,hesaidthatitseemeda matterforextremesorrowthatin thiscountrytheyhadabigproportionoftheirpopulationwhowere readytodestroyhumanlife.Hesupposedthatifheweretoaskthemotherwhousedthedrugsortheman whoveryoftensecuredthem,orthe chemistwhosoldthem,orthemanufacturerwhomadethem,whether theywouldtakethelifeofachild, andstrangleitandmurderit;they wouldthinkhimalunaticforasking thequestion,butitseemedtohim thatitwasamoreseriouscrimefor themothersandthosewhoprocured thedrugstokillthelifeinembryo. Hehopedthatthepeoplewouldrise abovethesethings,thattheywould paymoreattentiontohumanlife thaninthepast,thateverychild hornandeveneverymothershould beprotected.Whenthesepractices werenolongercontinued,whenthat daycame,thefutureofAustralia wouldbebrighter,publichealthgenerallywouldbemuchbetter,andthe happinessamongallconcernedwould bemorecertainthanwasthecase to-day.
inwhichhisGovernmentcameto theirrescueinthehourofneed,he deservesthethanksofthehardworkingGovernmentServantswhose wagesheincreased,hedeservesthe thanksofthepoorpeopleforthe herculeaneffortshemadetosupply themwithcheapmeat.Butifhe turnshisattentiontotheSocial Cockle-SowersfromAtoZ-whetherChemistsorDoctors,andifhe stampsouttheirviletraffic,hewill notonlybenefitthecitizensofthe AustralianCommonwealth,buthe willdeservetheeverlastinggratitudeofgenerationsyetunborn.

Afloralcantata,entitled"The Brownies'Whisper,"wasexcellently staged.Theelocutionofthepupils whotookprominentpartswasofa superiororder,andshowedcareful andjudicioustraining.Theselfconsciousnessandembarrassment, whichweusuallyassociatewithjuvenileattempts,wereconspicuousby theirabsence,givingplacetoamodestandpleasingaplomb.Thelittle artisteswerefollowedwitheaseand pleasureeveninthemostdistant partsofthetheatre.
Anitemdeservingspecialmention wasaslowandgracefuldrillgiven bytheolderpupils.Itisnotofthe militarystyle,butiscalculatedto securegooddeportmentratherthan muscularity.Ourreporterhasbeen assuredthatthisstyleofdrillcontainsallthatisbestinthemodern Sweedishorhealthvarietynowso muchinvogueintheoldcountries.
ThechildrenoftheInfants'School gaveanexcellentaccountofthemselvesinvariousactionsongsand fancydances.MasterJ.Monaghan andMissM.Walshobtainedrounds ofapplauseinthecharactersong, "TheSoldierandtheRedCross Maids."
Twotinygirls,MissesKathleen FanningandMarjoryMcIntosh,sang theduet,"IntheDuskoftheTwilight,"withgreatsweetnessandexpression.Theyhavevoicesofmuch promise,andfromtheirrendition ofthisduetwouldappeartopossess musicaltemperament.
ThepupilsofSt.Joseph'smay congratulatethemselvesonhaving givenanexcellententertainment, whichwashighlyappreciatedby theirvastaudience.

Guildford TheBazaartowhichwehadbeen lookingforwardsolongwasopened onTuesdayeveningintheVaudeville Theatre,Guildford.AswasannouncedinourlastissueHisLordship theBishopwastohaveperformed theopeningceremony,butthrough havingtoattendtobusinessofa moreurgentnature,hecouldnot possiblybepresent.However,he sentaveryworthyrepresentativein the,personoftheVeryRev.Father Hayes.Fr.Morris,inintroducing Fr.Hayestotheaudience,saidthat heregrettedtobe,obligedtoapologisefortheabsenceofHisLordship theBishop,whocouldnotbethere ashehadintended.Hewassorry thatHisLordshipwasnotpresent toseethesplendidcrowdwhichhad gatheredtogetherthatnighttoassistinliquidatingthebigdebt.
