MotherMaryoftheCrosswas bornatFitzroy,Victoria,on.January15th,1842.HerfatherAlexanderMcKillop,memberofawellknownHighlandfamily,hadcome
Dr.Geoghegan,oneofthepioneer priestsofVictoria,werewarm friends,andheoftenaccompanied FatherGeogheganonsickcallsasan emergencyguardincaseofaccident.
In1840Mr.McKillopmarriedMies FloraMcDonald,andtwoyearslater,whentheireldestdaughterwas born,herfather,whohadaspecial loveforOurLady,insistedthathis childshouldbearnoothernamehut Mary.ShewasbaptisedatSt. Francis'Church,Melbourne,and there,too,atanearlyage,shelaterreceivedherFirstCommunion, toprepareforwhichshewassentto aprivateboarding-schoolinMelbourne.ShortlyafterwardsherparentsmadetheirhomeinPortland, Victoria.Here,eveninherearly years,MaryMcKillonshowedthat
toiicLealandforesight; thiswas FatherTennisonWoods,destinedby (SodtobethefounderoftheSistersofSt.JosephoftheSacred Heart.Hewasanexperienced"bush missionary,"indefatigableinattendingtohisscatteredflock,whoinhabitedthesmalltownsandvillages dottedoverthedistrict,aswellas theremoteportionsofthebush.His longexperienceoftheconditionsof lifeintheseplacesshowedhimhow urgentlynecessaryitwasthatthe religiouseducationofthechildren shouldhethoroughlyattendedto, andforalongtimebeponderedas tothebestmeansofovercomingthe obstaclesthatpreventedthespread ofreligiousknowledgesoimportant andsonecessary.Itwasaboutthis timethatMaryMcKillopcameto PenolafromVictoria.aridsheand FatherWoodsbecameacquainted.He wasmuchimpressedbyherexemp- laryCatholiclife,anditwasnot longbeforehehadconfidedtoher hishopesandproposalsforbringing religiousknowledgetotherisinggen- erationofhisdistricts.Fromthis humblebeginning,thismeetingwhich mighttrulybeconsideredProviden- tialinthelightoftheeventsof followingyears,rosetheOrderofthe SistersofSt.Joseph.
In1866theworkbegan.Inasmall stableinPenola,MotherMaryofthe Cross,asshewasafterwardstobe called,started,withtwoorthree companions,asmallschool.Surely nothingmorehumble,andatthe sametimemorecourageous,couldbe imaginedthanthis.Doesitnotre- mindusforciblyofthelowlybirth atBethlehemandthehumblelifeat Nazareth?Withoutresourcesofany kind,withoutevenasuitablebuildingforthecarryingonoftheir work,thefirstmembersofthisOrder,whichwasafterwardstoextenditsbranchesthroughoutAustra- lia,commencedtheirarduouslabours withfullconfidenceandhopeinthe mercyandassistanceofGodalone. andtheirconfidenceandhopewere notinvainfornotonlytheirfirst school,butalsomanyoftheirsucceedingones,foundedinsimilarhumbleandimpoverishedcircumstances, wereeminentlysuccessful.Manyinstancesmighthegivenofthetrials ofthecommunityinitsearlystages. Theyhadtocombatnotonlypover- tyandwant,butevenindifference andaversion.Nevertheless,they spreadwithamazingrapidity.In 1867thenovitiateofthesisterswas establishedinAdelaide,andinthat yearMotherMarymadeherreligious profession.Lessthanfiveyearslater.theinstitutecouldalreadyboast of120members.

atoAustraliaintheearlydays,and settled,atfirstinSydneyandafterwardsinMelbourne.Hewasamost exemplaryCatholic,descendedashe wasfromgenerationsofScotsmen whohadremainedstaunchtothe Faithduringthelongdarkdaysof persecution.Hewasalwayspromin- entlyconnectedwithanythingtouch-ingCatholicinterestsintheearly pioneerdaysofVictoria; andin thosedaysofhardshipand1an4er heworkedwithuntiringenergyto assistthepriestsintheperformance oftheirarduousduties.Heand
firmnessandstrengthof readinesstohelpothers,andkindnessand sympathyofheart,whichweresuch prominentcharacteristicsofherwork inreligioninlateryears.Herfriends seemedtoturninstinctivelytoher inalltheirtroubles.Whenmisfortunesovertookherparents,s'a.workedcourageouslytolighten burdensofthefamily,andtoheryoungerbrothersandsistersshewasalwaysknownasthe"littlesoother." In1869,theAdministratorofthe DioceseofBrisbanerequestedthe Sisterstoestablishacommunityin thatdiocesebutgreatthoughthe needofthemwas,nofundsforthe journeycouldhesupplied.Butthe Sisterswerenothingdaunted.They actuallysetout,havingdecidedto begtheirfaresfromoneStateto another-amostcourageousresolu- tion,whichtheysuccessfullycarried out.InAdelaidetheycollectedenoughtotakethemtoMelbourne, where,withthekindassistanceofa fewfriends,theywereenabledto proceedtoSydney.InSydneythey againhadrecoursetocollecting,and thussucceededinreachingBrisbane. Findingthattoacceptaidfromthe Stateandplacetheirschoolsunder theGovernmentBoardwouldmean thegivingupoftheirpurelyCatho- licmethodofeducation,theyhadto enduremanytrialsandprivationsin carryingouttheirworkunaided. Theycouldnotaskforfees; they couldnotbeg.Yettheirworkwent onandprogressed;andtheirfirm determinationtorejectStateaidundertheconditionsaskedbytheGo-
vernment,resultedinthepeople unitingtogivethemeveryassistancethattheyrequired.Thusonce againtheirconfidenceinGodandin theirholyPatron,St.Joseph,was rewarded.

ThefollowingyearHisHoliness gavehisapprobationtotheruleof theinstitute.MotherMaryhadanotheraudiencewithhim,andagain receivedhisblessingontheinstitute andallitsintentions.

TheSisterswereinvitedtoNew Zealandintheeighties,andhave sinceestablishedbranchesoftheir instituteinthedistrictsofChristchurch,Dunedin,Wellington,and Auckland.Inthelast-namedthey havechargeofthreeMaori schools.Asinalltheirearlywork, theyhadtoenduremanyprivations inNewZealandalso,intheearly days.Suitablefoodwasscarce,and accommodationlimitedanddevoidof allcomfort.Intime,however,things becamebetter,andsuccesscrowned theirefforts.Underthefostering careofMotherMary,theSisters havespreadthroughoutalltheAustralianStates.Aglanceatthestatisticsshowsthewonderfulmanner inwhichthecongregationhasprogressedduringthe46yearsofitsexistence.TheSistersnumbernoless than650,theirschools117,andtheir pupils12,500.Thereare106houses, including12charitableinstitutions, whichgivesheltertomorethan1,100 inmates.
DuringallhertravelsMotherMary spiritandaimsoftheInstitute,be-metwiththegreatestkindnessfrom gantoopenlycriticiseandspeakeveryonewithwhomshecameinto againstit,andattemptedtobringcontact.Shemadetheacquaintance aboutacompletechangeinsomeofofthewell-knownCatholicauthoress, themostessentialpointsoftherule.LadyGeorgianaFullerton,andthe Amongstotherthings,theysoughtfriendshipthusformedlastedthrough toabolishthesystemofcentralgo-life.FromLadyFullertonsherevernmentintheOrdertherewastoceivedgreatsympathyandencourbenocentralSuperiorandnomo-agement,andanenthusiasticappretherhousetheintroductionoflay-ciationofthegoodworkdonebythe Sisterswassuggested,andsuperiorSistersofSt.Joseph."InthisOrhighschoolswerealsotobeestab-deranditspeculiarmission,"wrote fished.Naturally,whentheserevo-LadyFullerton,"thereisanopporlutionarychangeswereplacedbeforetunityforworkinbehalfofsouls, theSistersforadoption,withthewelladaptedtosatisfytheyearnings expectationthattheywouldsubmitofwomenlongingtowalkinthe tothem,theyfoundthattheycouldfootstepsofthemissionaries,and notconscientiouslydoso.Asare-winsoulstoGod.Thepathisopen suit,theywereseverelycensured,ev-toanysuch;thefoundresshasreendeprivedoftheirhabits,andatceivedanumberofinvitationswhich onceexpelledfromtheirconvent.Inshecannotacceptforlackofsubs.fewdaystheSisterswhoremainediects.Withhelp,withmeans,she butwhohadnotadoptedthechangesmightmultiplyherschoolsandhouwhichhadbeenputbeforethem,sesofmercyalloverustraliaand weretoldtogiveuptheirconventitsneighbouringlands.Foritis entirelytoanotherreligiouscorn-notonlyschoolswhichareseton munity,andgoouthomeless.ThisfootbytheSistersofSt.Joseph wasindeedaheavyblowtothecorn-theyshelterdestitutegirlsandhelprnunity,asyetonlyinitslesssufferersundertheirroof,and infancy.Butonceagaintheirsavemanyasoulfromthelossof confidenceinGodandtheirho-faith,whichsooftencomesfromrelyPatronwasunshakenandGodsilenceininstitutionswherethecadidnotpermittheOrdertoperish.tholicreligionisbadly,ifatall,tolFromamostunexpectedquarterhelperated." cametothecast-outnuns.Awell- thegoodworkoftheSistersconknownJewishfamily-totheirundy-tinuedtospreadrapidly.In1879 ingcreditheitsaid-offeredatern-theyacceptedaninvitationfromthe porarydwellingtothehomelessSis-lateArchbishopVaughantoforman ters.Before establishmentinSydney,andopened wereinchargeofthreeinstitutionsaHouseofProvidencein('umberinAdelaide; theywerenowreducedland-street.Heretootheyestablishtoseekingemploymentasgover-edanovitiate,whichwasafterwards nesses,seamstresses,ornurses,intransferredtoMount-street,';ortli ordertogetthenecessarymoneytoSydney.ByaDecreeoftheSacred supportthemselvesandtheyoungercongregationofPropagandain1888, membersoftheshatteredcongrega-theinstitutewaserectedintoaContion.Theyboreitallpatientlygregation,withtheMotherHouseat GodhadHisowndesignsintheMount-street.Otherschoolssoon troubleswhichcrowdedsoheavilysprangupinthecountrytownsin uponthem,andwilledthatgoodfact,everywheretheworkofthe shouldfinallycomeofitall.SoonSistersbegantoherecognisedand brighterdaysbegantodawnforthefullyappreciated.TheConventat poorSisters.DuringtheirtrialMount-streetisnowoneofthefinest theyweredeprivedofthepresenceofinthecommonwealth.Itprovides theirFounder,FatherWoods;huttheaccommodationforabout200SisJesuitFathersprovedthemselvesters.Additionsweremadetothe staunchfriends,andgavethemthatconventin1903,andonthatoccasencouragementandadvicewhichwasionHisEminencethelateCardinal sosadlyneeded.OnSt.Joseph'sMoranpaidaneloquenttributeto Day,1872,attheChurchofSt.Ig-theuntiringzealoftheSisters."It natins,Norwood,alargenumberofisapleasingthingforme,"hesaid, theSisterswereallowedtoresume-tocomethisafternoontobeassotheirhabits,byorderofthelateDr.ciatedwiththeSistersofSt.JoReynolds,BishopofAdelaide. seph,whohavelabouredforsomany
Suchistheresultoflessthan halfacentury'suphillworka..gainst allmannerofobstacles.Aswillhe seen,MotherMaryhadalargeshare ofcrossesandtrials.Oneofher greatestpersonalsorrowswasthe lossofhermotherinthewreckof the"s.s.Ly-ee-Moon"in1886.MotherMary'sferventprayerfortherecoveryofhermother'sbodywasanswered,forinamostprovidential mannerthebodywasfound,andinterredwithalltheconsolingritesof theChurch.

Butafterall,wordsalonedonot carryconviction.Itisdeedswhich countandweinAustraliahavebeforeoureyesthetangibleresultsof theself-sacrificeandtoilofthedevotedSistersthroughoutourgreat Commonwealth.Theirworksspeak morestronglyanddrivehometheir lessonmoresurelythaneloquent vc$ceorfacilepencaneverhopeto do.

WhatMotherMaryconsideredas amongthegreatestjoysofherlife wasthespecialblessingwhichthe presentPopel'iusX.conferredution herandhercommunityaboutthree yearsago.Theyhadpresentedto himajubileeaddress,togetherwith analbumcontainingphotographsof theirvariousschoolsandinstitutionsthroughoutAustralasia.Heexpressedhisdeepappreciationofthe greatworkofrealcharitywhich theyweredoing,andwrotehisblessingontheaddresstohereturnedto them."MayAlmightyGod,"he

Hergenuinespiritualenthusiasmfor thecauseofreligionwasaccompaniedbyafirmnessandstrengthof will,andalarge-heartedsympathy forthoseinsorrow,whichmadeher personalityindeedacharmingone, andwonlove,reverence,andtrust fromallwhoknewher.Tohernuns shewaseverunitedbyastrongbond ofaffection.Whenabsentfromthem shewaswiththeminspirit,praying forthem,andmakingplansfor theirwelfare.Duringherlifetimeshe regularlyvisitedpracticallyevery conventofherOrder,andkneweach individualSisterpersonally. was whilevisitingthe NewZealandin1902thatshewasstricken withthesevereillnessfromwhich sheneverentirelyrecovered,and whichendedinherdeathin1909. ItisjustayearsincetheSacred HeartHospitalwasopenedatYoung, N.S.W.,andwearepleasedtoknow fromtheannualreportthatthis latestadditiontoourAustralian CatholicHospitalshashadarecord yearintheperformanceoftending thesick.
ANNUALREPORT.
Atthemeetingthebon.treasurer Mr.R.Rumble)readandpresented theannualreportandbalance-sheet, whichsetout:-Theprogressduring theyearhasbeenverygratifying, anditisanindicationoftheesteem inwhichitisheldbythewholecommunity.Duringtheyearending30th September,1912,175patientswere admittedintothehospitalfortreatmentofthisnumber92weremales and83females153weredischarged curedandrelieved,and13remained. Ninepatientsdied,thecauses ofdeathbeingAcutepneumonia, bronchitis(childofeightmonths), measles,andgastro-enteritis(child fifteendaysold),senilitygastritis, cerebralhemorrhage,malignantdisease,cutthroatandgunshotwound, cardiacfailure,peritonitis.Ofthe patientswhodied,being5percent. ofthoseadmitted.6werebetween theagesof70and80years,showing oneoftheadvantagesofourinsti-
tution,whentheoldworn-outpioneersseekarefugeinthelasthours atthehandsoftheSisters.Besides theworkaccomplishedatthehospital,theSisterswereconstantlyemployedinnursingatprivatehomes throughoutthedistrict,andtheir onlyregretwasthattheirstaffwas notsufficienttomeettheincreasing demands.Theyhopebeforetheclose ofanotheryeartodoubletheirnumber,astheyhavealreadysenta representativetotheirmother-house atVersailles,inFrance,andHomortonHouseinLondon,fromwhich theyexpectmanyrecruitstostrengthentheirranks.Inthenearfuture theyhopetoestablishanovitiate whereSisterscanbetrainedforthe religiouslifeandthenobleprofession ofnursingthesick,andtoreceive intotheirranksAustralianladies destinedbyGodforsuchavocation. Thebalance-sheetshowedthetotal assetstobe£7,7955s2d,representingthecostofland,buildings,etc. Ofthatamount£5,91215shadbeen receivedindonationsonaccountof thebuildingfund,and0.602lOs2d wasstillowing.Theworkingofthe institutionshowedacreditbalance of£1413sSdoverworkingexpenses. FINANCIALSTATEMENT.
Father'O'Donnellthankedthebishopforhiskindnessincomingthere andforthegreatinteresthehad takeninthecauseofeducationin theNorthamportionofhisdiocese. Haditnotbeenfortheassistance ofHisLordship,itwouldhavebeen impossibleforthemtoproceedwith theerectionofthat'magnificent school.Thecontractpriceforthe buildingwas£1,656,whichwitharchitect'sfeesandothercharges wouldbringthetotaluptoabout £1,800.Thebazaarrecentlyconductedbytheladies-thougharranged atveryshortnotice-hadnetted£240 towardstheschoolbuildingfund, and,hehopedthatafurthersubstantialamountwouldbeforthwithsubscribedsothattheheavydebtmight beconsiderablyreduced.Hehimself hadmuchpleasureindonatingCIO 10s.

THENEWSCHOOL.
ThebuildingisofArmadalepressedbricks,andis80feetlongby30 feetwideintheclearinside,witha porchinfront10feetx12feet.The walls,whicharehollowthroughout, are16feethighabovethefloorlevel andhaveamouldedbrickbasecourse allaround.Tnefoundationsareof brickandcementuponfootingsof cementconcretereinforcedwithsteel bars.Thiswasdeemednecessaryon accountofthetreacherousnatureof thesub-soilatNortham.
Anamplestage,30feetwideby20 feetdeepoccupiesoneendofthe building.
Theroofisopenonsteelprincipals,islinedwithjarrahuponthe purlins,andiscoveredwiththebest stoutgalvanisedironoversailingthe walls3feetattheeavesandgables, thusformingagoodshelterfromthe weather.Thefrontgableissurmountedbyahandsomemetalcross.
Therearetwoexitdoorsinthe porchandthreealongthewestern sideofthemainbuilding,theselattershelteredbyaverandah18feet wide,theceilingofwhichislined similarlytothemainbuildinginordertobecoolinthesummertime. Abundantprovisionhasbeenmade forventilation,asinadditiontoan unusuallylargenumberofterracottaventilatorsinthewalls,thereis alargeventilatingspacetheentire lengthofeachsidewallbetweenit andtheceiling.Thewindowsare casement,andareglazedwithribbedplateglass,whilstcathedral glassinparti-tintshasbeenputin thefanlights.
Theflooringisofnarrow,stout, well-seasonedjarrah,andwillhe suitableforanypurposestowhich itmaybeput.
ThefoundationstoneisfromDonnybrook,is3feetlongby2feethigh, andisplacedunderthecentrefront windowoftheporch.
Provisiohhasbeenmadeforfutureextensionintheeventofitsbeingfoundnecessary.

Afteralungillnesscontractedin thedischargeofhissacredduties, theMogtRev.Dr.clancy,Bishopof Elphin,passedawayonSaturday, october19th.Theannouncementof hisdeathcausedwidespreadregret. HewasbornintheparishofRiverstown,Co.Sligo,in1856,andreceivedhisearlyeducationintheMarist College,Sligo,fromwhichbepassed toSummerhillCollege,Athlone.In 1876heenteredMaynooth,wherehe hadamostdistinguishedcareer, spendingtwoyearsontheDumboyne establishment.Afterhisordination, Dr.Clancywasappointedaprofessor intheDiocesanCollege,Sligo.Some fewyearslaterhewasappointedto aprofessorshipinMaynooth,where belabouredsuccessfullYuntil1895, ahenhewasmadeBishopofElphin insuccessiontothelateMostRev. Dr.Gilhooly.Hewasamostbrilliantpreacher,andhisservicesin thiscapacityaerefrequentlysought for,notonlyinhisowndiocese,but alloverIreland,andabroad.Those whohadthehappinessofbeingpresentatthecentenarycelebrationof MaynoothCollegewillneverforget thesermonwhichhepreachedonthe occasion.cardinalVaughan,CardieelLogue,andnumerousdistinguishedecclesiasticsandlaymenwerecharoiedbyhiseloquentdiscourse. thegoodworkfurreligionandeducationcarriedonundertheguidance ofhispredecessor.Hewasnotlong inchargeofthediocesewhenheaddedamagnificentcorridortothe SeminaryinSligo.Healsohadan electricplantinstalledforthesupplyoflighttothepresbytery,the college,thecathedral,andthetemperancehall,andotherworkscarried outunderhisdirectionwereaninfirmaryinconnectionwiththecollegeandasanatoriumatRoss's Point,erectedatacostofover £3,000,forsickpriestsbelongingto thedioceseofElphin.Amongsthis earliestactsasBishopweretheconsecrationofcastlerea('hurch,and theCathedralinSligo.NewchurcheserectedduringhisadministrationofthedioceseweretheMemorialChurchinRoscommon,oneof themostbeautifulchurchesinIrelandandthechurchesofLoughglin,('rosna,andBallinameen,in countyRoscommon,andGlenChurch inCountySligo.Mayhissoulrest inpeace.
HisHonorCo.Court.JudgeWakely,presidingattheBoyleQuarter Sessions,expressedhisdeepsorrow atDr.('lancy'sdeath,andhissympathywithhisrelativesandthepeopleofthediocese.ThelateBishop was,hesaid,amanofcharmingpersonalityandagreatIrishman,and the('atholicHierarchyhadsustainedagreatlossthroughhisdeath. HehadalwaysfoundDr.Clancy kindnessitself,especiallywhereminorsintheCourtwereconcerned.

OnWednesday,13thinst.,aEuchre PartyandDancewasheldintheMechanics'Institute,WestGuildford, inaidoftheWestGuildfordChurch Fund.WehavehadmanyEuchre Partiesintheparishthisseason,but theprivilegeofconductingthefinale -IcannotusetheusualadjectivewaslefttotheCatholicsofWest Guildford.Theirfirsteffortwassuch agrandsuccessitwashopedthat, withtheexperiencegainedtherefrom andtheenthusiasmandcourageit shouldhaveinspired,thefundswould benefittoevenagreaterextentby theproceedsoftheentertainmentof the13th.However,thehotweather militatedagainstindooramusements andwhatwasworse,infectedthe greaterportionoftheCommittee with"thetiredfeeling"whichisso inimicaltoenergyandactivity,withoutwhichitisimpossibletoachieve muchsuccessnowadays.Butthere wereafewwhobravedtheheatand burden,andwhodeservethegratitudeofthecongregationforthe magnificentworktheydid.Theentertainmentwasnotthesuccessit shouldhavebeen,butitwasfarfrom beingafailure.Thebestthanksof thecongregationareduetoMr.A. TheMissionopenedinGreenhillson the3rd,andthegoodMissionary wasedifiedtofindsomepeopledoing adistanceofnolessthantwenty miles,,andothersforthetimebeing abandoningallharvestingoperations anddevotingthemselveswiththeir wholehearttotheMission,sothat theymaygainallitsattendantgraces.
Onthe7thFr.Groganopenedhis MissioninQuellington,andwasvery pleasedtoseeallwithfewexceptionsattetathedevotionssoregularly,andt'receivetheSacraments sodevoutly.Apleasingfeatureof theMissioninthisdistrictwasto findthatanumberofnon-Catholics attendedit.
OnSunday,the10thinst.,the MissionwasopenedinYorkafterthe 10o'clockMass,andwascontinued everydayuntilthe17th.
Fr.Grogancameprepared,frominformationreceived,forverysmall congregations,andwasagreeably surprisedtofindanicecongregation everymorningatthe7and9o'clock Masses,ateachofwhichtherev. gentlemangaveaveryusefulinstruction,butwasstillmoresurprised tofindthatatthedevotionseveryeveningnotonlyweretheseatsidled, butextraseatingaccommodationhad tobeprovided.
OnSundaymorning,DeanWalsh, addressingthecongregation,saidhe wasexceedinglypleasedwiththeway inwhichthepeoplehadattendedthe exercisesoftheMissionduringthe week.Hisheartwasfullofjoyto seesuchalargenumberapproachthe AltarRailsthatmorning.TheVery Rev.GentlemansaidhehadexperienceofYorkforover12years,and hecouldsafelysaythattheMission whichwouldbebroughttoaclose onthat(114,hadbeenthemostsuccessfulgivenintheParishduring thattime,andbewishedpubliclyto thankFr.Groganfortheexcellent workhehaddoneforthepeopleduringtheMission.
OnSundayafternoonHisLordship Bishop('lunemotoredoverftom Northam,wherehehadopenedthe ConventSchoolthatmorning,to administertheSacramentof"anfirmation.Thetimefixedfortheceremonywas4o'clock,andwhenHis LordshipenteredtheChurchhefound itdifficulttobelievehewasinYork. HesawtilllargeChurchpackedwith peoplefromtheAltarRailstothe door,includingthechoirgallery,and anumberhadtogoawayasthey couldnotfindevenstandingroom.
