AmagnificentmonumentwaserectedrecentlyinBuenosAires,South America,tothememoryofFather Anthonylaity,0.P.,whowasborn atLoughrea,Co.Galway,in1804, endwhodiedinBuenosAires,in 1871. ''FatherFahy'sarrivalinthis countrywasprovidential,"saysthe ,'SouthernCross"ofArgentina.He cameatthepartingoftheways, whenpeoplewereyearningforhim, orsuchashe,asthehungryman yearnsforfood,ortheparchedcamp figurativelyyearnsforwater.
Scattered,lonely,almostderelict, strugglingwiththedifficultiesofan unfamiliarenvironment-anunsettled andsparselypopulatedcountry,new socialconditions,andanunknown language-theIrishexilesofthose earlydaysmighthelikenedtoa shipwithoutacompasstossingon strangeseas.
ThencameFatherFatly,withhis strongmindandhisclearvisionof thingstopointoutthewaytohis people,andguidethemalongthe path.Howwellhesucceeded,let thewrittenandunwrittenhistoryof theIrish-Argentitepeopletell.Many anIrish-Argentinehomeblesseshis memory.Keen-visionedasaprophet helookedoutonthedistanthorizon, sawthepotentialitiesofthecountry whenfewcouldseethem,andspoke thewise,unerringword,withregard totemporalthings,tothepeople whomheloved forhewastheir -banker,broker,andgeneralmanof affairs,aswellastheirspiritual pastor. Itwasthisversatility,thismani'toldcapacity,aswellashisabnegationandpriestlyqualities,thatqualifiedFatherFahytoplayhispreeminentroleinshapingthedestinies oftheIrishArgentinepeople. Likeallgreatmen,hedidnotjattachundueimportancetotrifles,he :graspedessentials."Landisasafe investment,"hesaid."Gooutto thecamp,inhalethepurecountry air marrythosefinewholesome girlsofyourcountry,andpossess theland."Thusitwasdone,forthe wordofthefar-seeingpriestwas lawwiththeIrishofthosedays. ThusitwasthatthecampsofBuenosAireswerespeckledwithIrishArgentinehomes,andthefoundationsofthegreaterpartoftheprosperityoflatertimeswerelaid.

FatherFahyarrivedinBuenos Airesin1843.Formorethana quarterofacentury,untilhisdeath fromyellowfever,caughtwhileattendingaPoorCatholicItalianin 1871,hisname1sintimatelyidentifiedwiththeprogressandwelfare, spiritualandtemporal,ofthelatge IrishcommunityinBuenosAires. HesavedtheIrishpioneersfrominnumerablelaw-suits,andtheirpropertiesfrombeingtakenpossession ofafterdeathbythe"testamentaria"harpies,forhisnamewasalwaysinthetitledeedsofthedifferentlands,sideby.sidewiththatof theowner.Bythismeans,onthe deathofthelatter,hewasableto claimtheproperty,receivethedeeds, andthenhandthemtothewidow andorphans.ManyofthegreatHiberno-Argentinemillionairesofthe presentdayowethesafetyoftheir landstothisthoughtfulpriest.
AlthoughFatherFahy'snamewas worthmillionsinthe,bank,yethe diedsopoorthathisfriend,Mr. Armstrong,anIrishbarristerin BuenosAires,paidhisfewsmall debts,andfiveotherIrishfriends paidhisfuneralexpenses.
Ast.bscriptionof.Et/011wascollectedin1863topresentFather Fahywithatestimonial,huthebegsedofthecommitteetohandit overtotheIrishhospital,saying thathehadnoneedformorethan onecoat,andasmuchassupplied hisdailynecessities.
Inpersonalanpearance,Father Fahywastallandstately,usually lookingthoughtfulandserious,hut likemostIrishmenandwomen,his countenancereadilybeamedwithintelligenceandettiethumour his mannerswerecharmingandunaffected.Mrs.Mulhallstyleshim"a greatDominican."and"thepatriarchofthemostflourishingIrish colony,perhapsintheworld."
SPLENDIDRECORDOF CATHOLICCHARITY.
DrivenfromIrelandbythetyrannyofanalienGovernment,thathandedovertheirancienthomestoa creelandexoticlandlordism,and carriedthescorchingflameofbigotryandproselytismovertheland, themajorityoftheIrishwhocame tothiscountrywerehandicapped withmanydisadvantages.Theyhad nocommercialtraining,andwith scorntheyandtheirfathershadrefusedthetaintededucationoffered thematthepriceofhonourbythe purchasersofsouls.TheItaliansand Frenchhadlittledifficultyinlearningthekindredlanguage,whichwas suchanobstacleinthewayofthe earlyIrish.
ButFatherFahywasahostin himself.Tothemultifariouslabours oflovewhichhe undertook, mayheaddedthoseofinterpreter. Now,afterfortyyearsthecreditdue tohimcannotheexaggerated; we ofthisgenerationareproudofhis memory,fortheannalsofourcommunityareglorifiedbyhisname. andhismemoryisreveredbemany nationalitiesbesidestheIrish.HonourthsntothewetswhohavehonooredFatherFahy,whohave erntedoverhimabeautifulmonumentmadein'Ireland,ofIrishniatsrial,andhavelaidthedeadpriest,

DanO'Connell,"theuncrowned KingofIreland,"the"Liberator"of IrishandEnglishCatholics,diedin "GenoatheProud"onf5thMay, 1847.HewasonhiswaytoRome, hehadjusttouchedItaly,buthis strengthwasgone,andhisstarwas fastsetting.Hedidnotandcould notfeellikeaMosesinsightofthe promisedland,fortheblackfamine wasliterallywipingoutthepeople whomhelovedandfoughtfor.His lastappearanceintheHouseof Commonswasremarkableweakin frame,feebleofvoiceandwithout hiswell-knownbuoyancy,hepleaded forhishaplesscountrymen.Hewas powerlesstohelpthem;andhedied ofabrokenheart.
InItalytheIrishhavelefttheir land-marks(saysawriterinthe "CatholicAmerican").Evenherein thisfavouredlandoffaith,many IrishSaintsarehonouredasapostles,andtheirshrinesareheldin venerationbythepeopleofmany Italiancities.Butto-dayIshall speakofonlyoneItaliancitythat hasforeverbeenmadememorableto thechildrenofErinastheplace wherethegreatestIrishmanofthe lastcenturybreathedhislast.Itwas inGenoa,onMay15,1847,that DanielO'Connell,thegreatliberator ofhispeople,passedtohiseternal reward.
