THELATEMONS.CARROLL,V.G.,OFSYDNEY.

ThelateMonsignorCarrollwas77 yearsofage,beingbornonJune24, l835,atGarvaman,intheparishof Grange,fourmilesfromthecityof Kilkenny.Hewasachildoffive yearswhenhearrivedinAustralia withhisparents.ThefamilysettledfirstatWindsor,afterwardsgoingtoCampbelltown,andfinally settlingonafarmatAppin,which, bythewishoftheMonsignor,was tobecomeecclesiasticalpropertyon hisdeath.Hemadehispreliminary studiesatoldSt.Mary'sSeminary I-andattheBenedictineCollege, "Lyndhurst,"Glebe.Hehaddecided tojointheBenedictineOrder,and foratimehewasanovice.Hechangedhisplans,however,andwentto Irelandtostudyforthesecular priesthood.Thiswasin,his2ith year.HeenteredMountMelh'ray, wherehestayedforawhile,later goingtoAllHallowsCollege,Dublin,wherehecompletedhiscourse, andwasordainedpriestonJune24,

ReturningtoAustraliainNovemberofthesameyear,hewasfora whileattachedtothestaffofSt. Mary'sCathedral.LaterheNorked inParramatta,andthencameback tothecathedral.Forfiveyearshe wasstationedatBombala,incharge oftheparish,andafterwardsat MountCarmel,Waterloo.From alo,untCarmelhewenttoSt.Augustine's,BalmainEast,assuccessor tothelateArchpriestTherry,that greatchampionofthefaithinAustralia,whowasmightilyadmiredby MonsignorCarroll,whohadmuchin commonwithhimTwenty-seven yearsagohewasappointedP.P.of theSacredHeartparish,andshortlyafterhisarrivalin18kt-towards thecloseoftheyear,infact-the lateCardinalchoseDr.Carrollas hisVicar-General.

BUTONEHOLIDAY.

MonsignorCarrolltookbutone holidayinhislife,andthatwasafterhisordinationtothepriesthood, whenhetravelledforashortwhile in,Europe.ThenhecenttoRome, wherehehadaninterviewwithPepe PiusIX.beforereturningtoAustraliatobeginthoselongyearsofarduousandself-sacrificinglabouron themissionthatonlyendedwithhis death.Sternandforcefulwashis Profile.themouthchiseledonlines thatwerefullofcharacter,hutthe asceticexteriorcoveredoneofthe kindestofhearts,andintheSacred Heartparishtheytellmanytalesof hishiddencharity.Heneverspoke (4himselforhisdoings-hewasene ofthemost'modestofmen-indeed, hecarriedself-effacementtotheextreme-betitisknownthatfromthe dayhereturnedfromIreland,a youngpriest,hedevotedhimselfto thecauseofthemiserable,anIno oneeverwentempty-handedfromhis door.IntheSacredHeartHospice tertheDying,whichheattendedas chaplainfromthedayofitsfoundation,22yearsago,untiltheday beforehislastillnessseizedhint,his noblecharitywasparticularlydisplayed."Iregardworkinginthe hospiceasoneoftheprivilegesof mylife."heoftensaid,andhenever permittedanyofhiscuratestoease theburdenofhisworkinthatinstitution.Atanyhouroftheday ornighthewaseverreadytogoto thebesideofthepoorpatientswho hadcometotheSistersofCharity forpeaceandcomfortduringtheir

lastdaysonearth.ThoughMonsignorCarrollwasnotaltogether indiscriminateinthedistributionof hisalms,hewasfrequentlychided bythosewhoknewhimwellforgivingtosomewhowereundeservingof hissympathy,butheinvariablyansweredthat"itwasbettertobemistakeninmanycasesthan,through theexerciseofatoominutediscrimination,tosendawayunrelievedone deservingperson."Thiswasthe spiritofhislife.Andasmightbe expectedhehadnomoneytobequeathwhenhedied.Ofthe£100 hepromisedattheblessingofthe foundationstoneofhisnewchurch lastyearhemanagedtoraise£3o bythedisposalofsomelittleinteresthehad.Thebalanceisprovidedfor-andthereisnothingleft. MonsignorCarroll'scareerwascharacterisedbyclearthinkingand straightspeaking,andadevotion thatwastrulysaintly.Wherethe Churchwasconcernedhewasuncompromising,andherecalledwithsatisfactionthefactthatonceonly hadhecelebratedamixedmarriage, andthenhewasspeciallyorderedto dosobytheBishop.Yet,however ferventandzealoushewasinthis connection,hewasneverknownto havesaidawoundingwordagainst anon-Catholic.Hewas,indeed,the idealpriest,whofilledhisoffice, withafullsenseofitsresponsibilities.NeveraSundaypassedatthe SacredHeartbutfoundhiminthe pulpiteitheratoneoftheMassesor ateveningdevotions,andhedrove theshaftsofgoodcounselasdeeply ashecouldintothemindsc'his Peoplewithhisclearreasoningand soundlogic,andhiswordsOroight manybacktothestraighttrack again.Nordidhedividepreaching frompractice.Heroseearly,retiredbetimes,livedsparingly,waspoor asanyofhispeople,andfilledeverydaywithahundredduties-ever fightingforthefaith,evercarrying consolationintothesunlesshomes oftheforlornandmiserable.Almosttiptothelast,thoughfrailand feeble,hecarriedoutallhisusual work,despitetheentreatiesofmost whowishedtorelievehim.

"Tbelieve,"saidArchbishopKelly aftertheRequiemMassforMons. Carroll,"thatallthatcanhesaid ofhimmaybeexpressedinthe words'HewasamanofGod.'Inhis heart,asIremarked,hewasathoroughpriest-priestlyintheemploymentofhistime,priestlyinallhis utterances,inflexibleinpointsof greaterpatfectioninecclesiastical discipline.Yes,inflexibilitywashis characteristicwhenhewassatisfied thathisviewwasthegospelview, for,unliketheworldlywise,he soughtfirstthekingdomofGodand Hisjustice,leavingallelsetoDivineProvidence.Washenotinflexibleinthematterofmixedmarriages?Somewouldanswer,Too muchso.'Listen!Whenhewasa youngpriestitfelltohislottoassistofficiallyatamixedmarriage. Itwasoneofthecategorywhich weconsidermorepromising.Someof thechildrenofthatunionbecamereligious,hutthewife,afterherexperienceoflifeasthepartnerofa mixedmarriage,said,'Godforgive thepriestwhodidnotstopmefrom contractingtheunionIdid.'Thenceforward,FatherCarrolldetermined thathisfacewouldheforeverset againstthesemarriageswhichthe CatholicChurchinherheartfears anddetests.

"Whendeathcamethesanteprinciplethatguidedhimthroughlife guidedhiminto will.Hewasurgedtoseekmore certainrecoveryinthespecialcare oftheneighbouringhospital,buthe said'Onlyonepersoncanuuume todosuchathing.'Whenthatpersondidaskhim,nochildcouldhe moredocile.Butafteralittlewhile hisinflexibleintegrityasserteditself.'Icannotgotomygravefrom ahospital,'hesaid'Iwillgoto mygravefrommyownhome.'So hereturnedtohisownroom,and PointingtoapictureoftheBlessed Virgin,whichhungoverthemantel, hesaid,'Shewilltakecareofme.' Itisnotforustothinkthathe mighthavebeensparedlonger.He wascharacteristicallyhimselftothe end,andnowheiswearingthe crownhedeservedasapriestworthyofdoublehonour,forheruled wellbothinwordandindoctrine.'

"IrememberdistinctlyMonsignor carroll'sexpressionwithregardto someofhisownparishioners,who cametoearlyMassonSundays withtheirpicnicbaskets,andafter ahastyworshipoftheirCreator, wenttospendthedayinutterforgetfulness,ofHim.Itisagoodand PraiseworthythingtogotoMass, butisthegoodsufficient,istheSandaysanctified,willthegraceobtainedbeasanctificationoftheSt.nday givenuptosuchpractices?Certainly,itwouldbenocaseforconfession,butthereisadefectthatis tellingontheCatholicspirit.Inall suchthingsIwouldclaimthat MonsignorCarrollwasamanof God,thathespokethetruth,that hewasthesaltoftheearth,which Godintendseverypriesttobe,and Itrustthathisspiritwillnotdepartfromus,thatwewillkeepthe idealofearnestandsincerereligion beforeourminds,andtrytobring ourpeopletoliveaccording,toit fromtheirinfancyonwards.

Personswhoadmirethewritingsof Mr.HaroldBegbie(saysthe"Ave Maria")willwonderatthechange thathascomeoverhimwhenthey read"TheLadyNextDoor,"just PublishedbyMessrs.Hodderand Stoughton.Heusedtobefullof distrustandprejudicetowardsCatholicsandtheirreligion."Iinherited,"hetellsus,"analmostviolent antipathytotheRomanCatholic Church."Butheisridofitnow, and,likeanhonestman,seemstobe greatlyrelieved.Theeffectwaspro(heedbyavisittotheSouthof Ireland,ofwhichhewrites:"InIrelandIcamefacetoface withmyproblem.IntheSouth, whereCatholicinfluenceissupreme, thepeoplearealmostenchantingin theirsweetnessofdisposition,entirelyadmirableinthebeautyand oftheirdomesticlife,wonderfulinthewholesomenessandsanctityoftheirchastity.Insteadofa lazy,thriftless,discontented,and squalidpeople-asIhadimagined themtohe-theIrishoftheSouth wonmysympathyandcompelledmy admirationbyqualitiestheveryopposite.Itseemedtomethatthese hard-working,simple-living,familylovingandmostwarm-heartedpeoplehaddonewhatweinEngland havelargelyfailedtodo,evenin ourvillages-towit,solvedtheproblemoflife.Thecharmwhichevery travellerfeelsintheSouthofIreland isthecharacteroftheIrishpeople, andmyinvestigationforcedmeto thejudgmentthatthischaracteris thecultureofIrishCatholicism.My Problemlay,therefore,insquaring theadmirationIfeltforthosegraciouspeoplewithmydetestationof theChurchwhichhasguardedIrish characterfromthedawnofitshistory.Iwascompelledtoadmitthat hadgreatly'misjudgedtheCatholicChurch." Thefranknessofthisisasfineas couldbe.InnumerableotheroutsidersmisjudgetheChurch,tut, alasonlyacomparativelysmall numberevercometorealisethefact. Thosewhitdogenerallyhavetheir eyesopenedbythelivesoffaithful Catholics,thoughCatholichooks maydisposethemnottokeeptheir eyestightlyclosed.

Theannouncementofthedeathin MissourirecentlyofJohnCole,inventorofthelightningrod,recalls thespectacularcareerofthatformerlyinterestingfigureintheworld ofcommerceandofscienceassciencewasunderstoodbythelaymen ofearlierdays.Nodoubtthereare half-grownboysandgirlsinplenty now,whohaveneverseenalightningrod,yetaquarterofacentury agonobuildingwasconsideredsafe fromaboltoflightningunlessit wassurmountedbythetrustedsteel pointwhichwasexpectedtoattract thefluidandconveyitharmlessly into.theearth.Publicfaithinthe efficacyofthelightningrodwasso greatintheEasternasdMississippi ValleyStates,wherethunderstorms arecommon,thatitwasdifficultfor theownerofabuildingtogetafire insurancepolicyunlesshefirstprovidedalightningrodasashield fromdangerfromtheelements,as doestheaveragenegrodependupon hislittlebagprovidedbytheboodeovendor.Butthepassingofthe lightningrodhasbeengoingonfor manyyearsandnowitispracticallyunknownexceptwhenitisseen onsomeoftheolderbuildingswhere ithasbeenforperhapstwenty-five orthirtyyears,andthepeoplehave cometolookuponitwithaboutas muchrespectforitsvirtueasthey haveforthelefthindlegofa graveyardrabbit.Thelightningrod serveditspurpose,itmadeseveral millionaires,anditcalmedthefeel logsofthousandsofnervouspersons duringthunder-storms,butithas gone,andsoonwillberecalledonl bytradition.

TheHolyFatherhasaddressedan importantlettertoMonsignorDubois,ArchbishopofBourges,ftthe subjectofthepronunciationofLatin.Inapreviouscommunication, hisGracehadinformedthePontiff thatduringthelasteightyears, sincethepublicationofthe"Motu Proprio"onsacredmusic,theRomanpronunciationof.Latinhasbeen makinggreatheadwayinFrance, andthatitisnowusedinmany cathedrals,seminaries,colleges,and evenincountrychurches.

HisHoliness'sletter,afterdwellingonthis,proceeds"ThequestionofthepronunciationofLatinis Intimatelyconnectedwiththatof therestorationoftheGregorian Chant,theconstantobjectofour thoughtsandrecommendationssince thebeginningofourPontificate.The accentandpronunciationofLatin

meansblindsecularismthereisno suchthingforus.WepreferChristiancharity,whichgavebirthto ourhospitals,andwhichhasgiven love,eiliciencyandprosperityto them.WetrusttotheChristiancharity,andsay,whilstwedonotthank youfordoingyourduty,ifyouwill notdoit,wemustwaittillyou, cometotheuseofreason."

"Youmaybuildhospitals,and voteanannualsubsidy,"saidHis GracerecentlyatMonteOliveto, "butyouwillnotmake:hemasgood hospitalsastheCatholicones.Of silvercannotbemadeasgoodas gold,noranymetalasgoodas precious,stones,religionisapricelessstonetowhichno.netalcan compare.ThespiritofChrist isthere.Therewerenohospitals untilafterChristandChristianity spreadthroughouttheworld. 1 claimthataflthegoodthatisin AustraliaisderivedfromChristianity.ThosewholefttheCatholic ChurchtookfromittheirowncommonPrayerbrook,theirtraditions andfamilylife,buttheyarelosing themunfortunately.Nowthereisno CatholicBishopwhohasnotahospital.WhenConstantinegavefreedomtobuildhospitals,theChurch erectedoneforwomenandanother formenbesidethegreatSt.John LateranCathedral.Otherscannever approachtheCatholichospitalseven inmattersofeconomy.Letthem getthebestadministratorsor Physicians,buttheywillnot reachtheCathelichospitalsin thatrespect.Thegeneralpercentage ofdeathsinpublichospitalswasabout7percent.;Lewisham'sreturns were2.24,whileSt..Vincent's,withinthezoneofaccidents,didnotgo beyond4percent.Theywouldnot getahospitalinanypartofthe worldmanagedwithgreatereconomy,procureresultswithsuchefficiencyastheCatholichospitals.Itis thespiritof('hrist,arrinotthe nunsorindividualsthatdidit.It istoohadtosaythatnohelpwill b'givensuchhospitals.Otherinstitutionssaythattheydependuponmoney,andwantmoreofit.or theywillshutupthebeds. "Thereisahardmetallicringaboutthat,"saidhisGrace."Thedoctorsmayheexcellentmen,andworthyoftheirtraditions.Allpraiseto them.Suchacryisnot,heardat Lewisham,Auburn,orSt.Vincent's Hospitals.Ifyousaytouswewill Riveyoumoney,youmustgiveop yournuns,andadmitlittlebylittlelayadministration,whichina momentmaytakethemanagement ofthehospitaloutofthehandsof thenunsanddrivethemoutjustas theFreemasonsaredoinginPortugalandFrance.Ifyougiveusmoneysendwhomyoulike-sendspoiled Catholicsifyoulike,andletthem inspectandseehoweverypennyis rightlyspent.LettheUniversity lookafterthedegreesofthephysicians.Thereismuchreverencefor nopnlarcontrol.Welcomethatwithinitsproversphere,butwhenit

OneofthemarvelsofParnell'scareer(saysT.P.O'Connor)was theextraordinaryandimmediateinstinctheshowedforpoliticalwarfare,andespeciallyinthatdifficult andperilousarena'oftheHouseof Commons.LordEversleybringsout thewell-knownfactthatwhen-Parnellattwenty-eightbeganhisParliamentaryoareer,therewereveryfew menintheHousewhoweresoprofoundlyignorantofthethingshis political,careerdemanded.Hehad neverreadIrishhistoryprobablyhe hadreadbutlittleEnglish;indeed, heneverwasareaderofanything literarytotheendofhisdays. doubtifheeverreadaanovelora poeminthewholecourseofhisexistence.,Andyetwithinacoupleof yearsofhisentranceintotheHouse ofCommons,withoutanypretensionsto'greatoratoricalpower,this unletteredsmallsquirewastheequal ofthegreatestParliamentarianin alltheartsofParliamentarywarfare.Hereisasingularinstanceof this.Heobstructed,alongwith Biggar,theArmyMutinyBill-which Ishouldexplaintomynon-political readersisaBillwhichhastobe PassedeveryyearinordertoconstitutethestandingArmy-enold constitutionalprecautionwhichwe haveinheritedfromthedaysofthe Stuarts,when.Parliamentwasstill fightingforitsrights,andtheKing hadtohepeeventedfrontcreatinga standingarmyintheintersecso'a despoticThrone.Thesetwoyearsof obstructionwereenoughtobreak downthepatienceofanyassembly; andtherewasthereforetheprospectofParliamentpassingrules whichmighthavecrippled,ifnotdestroyed,Parnell'spowerofinterferingwithit.ButParnellpickedout oftheitoorsomesuchnumberof clausesofwhichtheArmyMutiny Billconsists,thetwoorthreeelate seswhichauthorisedflogginginthe Army.Itwasastroke,,fgenius, forthepunishmentwasbrutal,and theattempttoabolishitapoealledt thestronghumanitarianinstinctsof theEnglishpeople,withtheresult thatthetwolonely,discreditedand hatedIrishObstructivesdraggedafterthemfirstMr.Chamberlain,who quarrelledwithLordHartington, thentheLiberalleakier,andnearly brokeuptheLiberalpartyand, finally,ParnellandBiggarfound themselvesgoingintothelobbyv.ith notonlyMrChamberlain,butalso LordHartingtonandthewholeLiberalParts-. IltimatelythererosebehindiheIrihmentheflamingsupPortoftheEnglishmasses,untilin theendtheConservativeGovernmenthadtobendbeforethestorm and,practically,floggingintheArmy,andafterwardsintheNavy, wasabolished.Herewasatriumphantvindicationwhichmusthave madeParnell-whohadsomecynicisminhiscomposition-smileetimly.

ThecandlesandlampswerelightedontheHighAltar,andasthe Bishopandtheattendantclergy, precededbythecross-bearer,and acolytes,enteredbythemain doorandpassedupthe'aisle,the eightPostulants'enteredbythenortherndoorandtooktheirplaces withinthesanctuary.('ladinbridal array-symbolicaloftheearthly pompstheyweretoforego-they kneltehilethehymn"0Gloriosa Virginum"wassungbythechoir. Aftertheversicleandprayer,the Bishop,layingasidemitreandace vier,blessedthePostulants'wax candles,sprinkledthemwith 1,,,1 water,andincensedthem.ThePostulantswerethenconductedoneby onetotheBishopbytheMother AssistantandMotherSuperior. Kneeling,eachreceivedhercandle, lighted,fromtheBishop,withthe words,"Receive,dearlybeloved eaughter,thiscorporallight,asan emblemoftheinwardlight,todispelallthedarknessofignoranceand errorthat,illuminatedwiththe lightofDivinewisdom,withthefervouroftheHolyGhost,thoumayest deservetobeeternallyunitedwith .JesusChrist,theSpouseofthe church,Wholivethandreignethwith GodtheFather,intheunitynfthe HolyGhost,worldwithoutend. THEBISHOP'SSERMON.

AllthePostulantswerethensprinkledwithholywater,afterwhich theBishop,assumingmitreancrozier,beganthesermon-abeautiful andeloquentaddressonthewords "ThoushaltlovetheLordthyGod withthywholeheart,andv:iththe wholesoul,andwithallthymind'' (LukeI.,27).

HisLordship,attheopeningofhis sermon,saidthattheceremonythey werewitnessingthatdayhadSeen madeapubliconeforseveralreittone-TheConventOratorywasso limitedinspacethatitwasimpracticabletoholdthereceptionthere. TheSistersnaturallyabhorredanythingintheshapeofapublicdielay.still,onthisoccasionithad itscompensatingadvantages.People wereonlytoofamiliarwithworldly eisplaysdisplaysoffashionand Pleasure,andallthosefascinating andalluringforcesoftheworld whichenthrallandholdcaptivethe humanheart.Somuchwasthis-o, thatmostpeoplehadcometobelievethatthelawofGodhadbut littleforceinthepresentlife.It waswell.therefore,thatsuchreligioesspectaclesastheonetheywere

nowwitnessingshouldhelptocorrectsuchamistakenbelief.These publicdisplaysofheroicself-sacrifice, andofthegenerousandjoyfulsurrenderofendearinghometiesfor Christ'ssake,shouldprovetothe worldthatGod'sloveandGod's lawhadstillamostpotentinfluence,andcharmforgeneroushuman hearts.Theywerewitnessingthe completionofthefirststageofthat life-longrenunciationforthesakeof OurLord,andtheHeavenlyBridegroomseemedtostandonthe thresholdandaddressthoseHis dearchildreninaspecialmannerin thewordsoftheGospel"Henceforth'thoushaltlovetheLordthy Godwiththywholeheart,andwith thyelidesoul,andwithallthy mind.'"Forthat,afterall,wasthe endofallstriving,self-denial,prayer,andself-disciplineinthereligiouslife.

HisLordship,continuing,elahorat. edonthephrasesoflovingGod "withthywholeheart,""withthy wholesoul,"and"withallthy mind."TheloveofGodforHisown sake,andthesobjectionoftheintellectandwilltoHim,constituted thegreatattractionsofthereligions lifeandGod,drivenfromthehearts oftheworldlings,found,sanctuaryin theheartsofHisservantsinthereligiouscloister.Thusitwasthat thosecloisterswerefilledwithholy Peace,somuchsothatitsinfluence wasfeltevenbytheirenemieswhenevertheyenteredareligioushouse.

HisLordshipconcludedbypaying aneloquenttributetothegreatwork accomplishedbytheSistersofMercy during,the66yearsoftheirestablishmentinPerth.Hecongratulated themontheadditionstotheirnumbersthatafternoon,andprayed thatGodwouldshowerhischoicest hles-ingsonthenovicesandonthe greatOrdertowhichtheyhadnow beenadmitted.

Attheconclusionofthesermen, theBishopproceededtointerrogate thePo-tulants,singly,askingthem whattheydemanded." mercy ofGod,andtheHolyHabitofReligion,"wasthereply.Theywere thenaskedwhetheritwasoftheir ownfreewill,andwhetheritwas theirfirmintentiontoperseverein Religionuntiltheendoftheirlives; andthesebeinganswered,theBishop prayedthatwhatGodhadcommencedinthem,Hemightperfect.

ThePostulantsthereupongenuflectedandretiredfromthechurch.

DuringtheirabsencetheBishopand Clergyrecitedthethreepsalms,"In exituIsrael,""ConservemeDominn"and"Querndilecta,andMiss MinnieWaughinthechoirsang"Ave Maria."

TheBishopthenproceededtobless thehabits.andwhenthiswasover, thePostulantsre-entered,nolonger clothedinbridalarray,butinthe garmentsofthecloister.Aseach Postulantcameforwardandknelt beforetheBishop,hemadethesign ofthecrossoverherandprayed "0LordGodofHostswehumbly imploreThyclemency,thatinthe abundanceofThymercy,Thoumay.estcleanseThyservantfromallcorruptionoftheoldman,andinalre hercapableofaholynewness, throughChristOurLord.Amen."

ThePostulant,kneeling,gaveher lightedcandletotheMotherAssistant,andreceivedfromtheBishopin turnthecincture,theveil,andthe chirchcloak.Finallyshetookher candleagainandwenttoherplace. TheBishopthensnrinkledthemall withholy.eater,andprayedthatthey mightdevoutlypersevereinthe cherchandmeriteternallife."

Noonecouldfailtobeimpressed withthesolemnityandbeautyofthe ceremonyofreception,andthespectacleoftheseeightyoungLadies consecratingtheirlivestoGod'sholy servicemustsurelyhaveraisedthe mindsofallpresenttohigherthoughtsandnoblerresolvesandholier aspirations.

Andwhythisblindfanacticism?

Theoverwhelmingmajorityofthe Iri',hpeopledemandHomeRule; therepresentativesofthisvastmajorityhavefoughtconstitutionally, unitedly,patiently,andperseveringlyforthatmeasureoffreedom. Forthegreaterpartofacentury theirdemandwasnomoretoEnglishearsthanthevoicecryingin thewilderness.Buttimeshave changed.andeventshavemarched; andEnglishStatesmenhavebeen changingWiththetimesandsteppingtothemarchofprogress.They haveseenthattheirpolicyofcrueltyandresolutegovernmenthas beenahugefailureinIreland.And bywayofcontrasttheyhavenoted withpleasureandwithpridetheunprecedentedsuccessthathascrownedtheworkoftheHomeRuleParliamentsinCanada,Australia.and SouthAfrica.Theyrecogniseand realisetheirownfaultsexperience hastaughtthemthattheypursued thewrongpolicyinIreland.They arenowwillingtolearnapractical lessonfromexperience,andtoundo someoftheevilsofthepastby makingrestitutiontoanationbleedingtodeathattheirverydoors,a nationthathasbeendespoiledand troddenuponandoutragedinthe stereotypednameofBritishfreedom.

IsitbecausetheyareafraidofbeingpersecutedbytheirCatholicfellowcountrymenNotatall: the confiscations.intoleranceandpersecutionswhichaccountfortheexistenceoftheOrangemeninIreland to-dayneverformedapartofthe IrishCatholics'policy.Thatwasthe policyoftheOrangemenandtheirforbears;anditistoolateintheday !4,expectIrishCatholicstofollow thatbadandnarrow-mindedexample.

Mr.F.Kennan(President)waselectedt,betheSociety'sdelegateto theKalgoorlieDebatingAssociation.

Itwasunanimouslyresolvedthat Messrs.SheedyandLandvogt,who retiredfromtheSocietylastweek, beappointedlifehonorarymembers. Thefollowingnewmemberswere welcomedduringtheeveningMessrs J.Lynch,F.O'Donohue,Moyler, Brown,andE.Schocher. Thesyllabusitemsetdownforthe eveningwasa"Magazine"night. TheRev.Fr.Sheridan(Spiritual Director)referredintermsofpraise totheuntiringandzealousefforts ofthesegentlemenforthewelfareof theSocietyduringtheirtermof membership.Hetrustedthatwhat trainingthe,hadreceivedindebating,etc.,fromtheSocietywould standthemingoodstead.Onbehalf ofthemembersoftheSociety,heexpressedsorrowattheirdeparture, butwishedthemeverysuccessin theircareers.

Rev.Bro.Duggan(C.B.C.),insupportingthepreviousspeaker,spoke ofthemanygoodqualitieshehad foundinourguests.Althoughpartingisusuallyanoccasionofregrets,yettherewasacertainamountofpleasureinthe.knowledgeof theprofessionswhichtheywereabout tofollow.

Mr.Culligansaidhisfeelingswere notaltogetherofregretatthedepartureofot.rfriends,becausesuch departuremeantfurtheradvancementtotwowhoweremostcertainlydeservingofit.Hereferred tothesplendidpositionthesociety hadattainedasatributetotheadmirableandenthusiasticeffortsof Messrs.SheedyandLandvogt.There wasstill,however,alittleroomfor improvement,andhepointedoutto member,thenecessityoffollowing theexcellentexampleshownbythese gentlemen.Hejoinedwithothersin regretattheirleaving,yetgavethem allgoodwishes.

TheaimandobjectoftheCentre partywereofficiallydefinedtwoyears agoasfollows"TheCentreisa Politicalpartythathastakenforits aimtheupholdingoftheinterestsof thewholenationineverywalkof lifeinaccordancewiththeprinciples oftheCatholicviewoflife."This mayseemsomewhatvague,andno doubtinthestrenuousdaysofthe KulturkamPfasimplerformulamight havesufficed.

Theplace,whichoflatehadbeen littlemorethanaclearinginthe forest,wheregroupsofrudedwellingshadarisen,inhabitedatfirst entirelybyhalfbreeds,butwhither hadgraduallycomewhitemenin connectionwitharailway,andemigrantswhohaddriftedthitherfrom variouscentresoftheOldWorld, wasnowapopulous,ifstraggling, settlement.Itbidfairtobecome, with,,therapidgrowthoftheWest, aprosperoustown.Butaroundit wastheeilderness,overwhichcolossalmountainpeaksprojectedtheir shadows,anddeep,silentgorges beardonlythetricklingofmountain streams.

Atfirstinthoseregionstherehad beennoMassatall,noreligious serviceofanykind.Thenamissionarypriesthadbeguntocomethitheronceortwiceayear,andfinallyonceamonth,untilthattime whentheBishophadbeeninvitedt giveconfirmationtoahandfulof children.Thatceremony,likeall theothers,tookplaceinabarn, withatemporaryaltarrudelyconstructed,withonlythebarestnecessariesinthewayofaltarfurnishings,andwithpovertyofthedirest descriptiondominatingthings.
