"CatholicUnion."TheCatholic whodoesnottakeaninterestin CatholicFederationissickandAl. LethimlooktohimselfandhisCatholicity.Overthepageoncemore. "WaysideNotes."Newsfromthe worldtoliftyououtofnarrow grooves.Necessarythisifweare nottobecomeakindof"Three TailorsofTooley-street."

Ihavejusthadmyusualweekly readofthe"W.A.Record,"andthe manyinterestingsubjectsdealtwith initspagessetmethinkingonthe "grumblers"Brevityisthesoul of.wit.Itisalsotheexcuse ofthebusyindividual,and, further,itistheexcuseoftheunfacilascribe.,UnderthetwolatterI willsheltermyself,andbeasbrief asmayheintellingwhatIfound in,my"Record"thisweek. First,Inotethatthefavourite caption"InandAroundtheHome" hasbeentransferredtotheinside coverpage,denotingthatgoodmeasurehasbeengiven.Beginningwith thecheeryphilosophycontainedin "Whatwouldyoudo,"thereader findschoiceandpracticalparagraphs.Frontpage.-Thegreat AmericanCardinalat7S-afirst-rate moraltonicinitself.Thereference tothehighcostoflivingandpresentdayluxurywillbearpondering upon.Turnthepage.AglowingorationfromourownbelovedBishop, addressedtotheSydneyHihernians. WhenwereadthisoverweseeDr. Clunebeforeus,wehearhiswellknownvoice,forourBishopisendowedwiththefacultyofbringing thosewhomheaddresseseitherin Personoronpaperimmediatelyen rapportwithhim.HereissomethingaboutIrishSaintsandmotor cars,hutwehurrypastthemotor cartocatchupwith"TheChildren andtheAngels."Mothers,putthis ieceintheroomsofyourchildren. Ihavenearlypassedovertheexcellent"hits"onthelatest"Eugenics"fad.Thisisasubjectwhich Catholicpapersshouldfollowand clinchthefallaciesastheygo.A hatefulandhorribletheory,andas absurdandfalseasitishateful.A goodresolutionwasth9,t,oftheCatholicdoctorsinconference,which ineffectwasthatthebestmethodof "Eugenics"orimprovingthehuman stockistheold,oldexhortation, "KeeptheCommandments."

Isaidsomethingattheoutset aboutbrevity.Believeme,mydear readersofthe"Record,"IamcoveredwithconfusionwhenIseehow Ihaverunoncountingthegoldto hegatheredinourCatholic1.aper, andhavenotyethalftoldthetale. There parer,hutit isthespiritofdiscernmentandappreciationonthereader'spartthat islacking.

Somepeoplewhoreadmynote aboutthelittlenewspaperboysin lastweek'sissue,arestillwondering whythatsimpleandedifyingnote appearedinthiscolumn.Whenwill theyseethattheirwonderisavery severecommentupon"societyfclk," includingtheirdearselves? Recognisingthatthe"rankisbut theguineastamp,"andknowingthat "kindheartsaremorethancoronets,"Ishallalwayskeepthiscolumnopentothepooraswellasthe rich;highideals,honesty,industry, culture,andcharityarethequalificationsnecessaryforanhonourable mention.

EnglandinSeptemberandwillbe accompaniedbytwoFathersofthe Order.Laterintheyearhewillbe joinedbyothermembersofthecongregation.FatherCreaghhasimposeduponhimtheresponsibledutyof buildingachurch,monastery,and possiblyelementaryschools,andin otherdirectionsplacingthenewmissioninPretoriaonafirmbasis.

Hon.RichardC.Kerens,United StatesAmbassadortoAustria-Hungary,recentlyarrivedathislo'nein St.Louis,Mo.,onvacation.MrKerensisaCatholic,andin14().4receivedfromtheUniversityofNotre DametheLaetaremedalfcrdistinguishedservicetotheChurch.The AmbassadorwasborninIreland, butcametotheUnitedStatesin infancy.HeservedintheUnion armythroughouttheCivilWar, chieflyinthetransportationdepartment.Whenthewarwasaver hecontinuedhisrailroadworkon hisownaccount,havingbeenidentifiedwithSheconstructionofnearlyalltheimportantlinesofthe southandsouthwest.

Mgr.Bickerstaffe-Drew, better knowntothereadingworldatlarge as"JohnAyscough,"hasbeenelevatedtothedignityofProthonotary Apostolic.Thenewprelatewasa converttotheChurchattheageof 20.Ordainedin1854,hejoinedthe Britisharmychaplain'sdepartment, andhasservedatPlymouth,Malta, andSalisburyPlain.

InTRyihewasmadeaPrivate ChamberlaintoLeoXIII.,andin IsmthesamePontiffconferredon himthecross"ProEcclesiaetPons tifice."HewasconfirmedintheofficeofPrivateChamberlainbythe PresentHolyFather,andshortlyafterwardswaspromotedtothepermanentdignityofDomesticPrelate. In19o9hewasmadeaKnightof theHolySepulchre.

TheEnglishCatholicCongressheld atNorwichfromthe2ndtothe5th oflastmonth,wasIneveryrespect amostsuccessfulandinspiritinggathering.Delegatesattendedfromall PartsoftheKingdom,andtheutmostenthusiasmwasdisplayed.An addressofwelcomewaspresentedto theCardinal,whowasmetbythe BishopoftheDiocese,theArchbishopsandBishopstaking;artin theCongress,theCanonsoftheDiocese,andtheReceptionCommittee.

IntheeveningagreatmassmeetingwasheldinSt.Andrew'sHall, andtheDukeofNorfolkandmany distinguishedpersonswerepresent.

TheLordMayorofNorwichgavea civicwelcome.

ItisgratifyingtoaddthatthesocialinvitationssentoutinconnectionwiththeCongressweregenerallyaccdptedbytheaop-Catholiccivic andotherpersonagesItowhomthey wereaddressed.

THECATHOLICFEDERATION.

TheCatholicTruthSocietyhelda meeting,atwhichoneofthepapers wasreadbytheRev.P.J.Hayden, S.J.,ofSt.Helens.

Therewasalargegatheringofthe CatholicConfederation,whenastrenuousaddresswasgivenbythe('hairmanoftheConfederation,Mr.L. Drummond,K.S.G.,whosaidit couldnotbetoofrequentlyinsisted uponthattheConfederationwas strictlynon-political.Itwasthe PracticalunionofCatholicsforthe purposeofprotectingandpromoting theircommonrightsasCatholics andcitizens.

TheFederationshoulddoallin theirpowertohelpandencourage thoseCatholicswhointhelabour movementwereendeavouring,not withoutsuccess,toimpressuponthe leadersofthatmovementthatthe welfareoftheworkingclasseswould innowaybeservedbythesacrificeorcompromiseofthoseprinciples which,beingfoundedonnaturaland Divinelaw,wereessentialtothe well-being,eveninthisworld,ofthe humanrace.

Helookedforwardtothedaywhen thegreatWesleyanbuildingonthe siteoftheoldaquariumatWestminster,wouldfallintotheirhands. (Laughterandcheers.)Hespoke highlyoftheharrowswhichhad beenbroughtintouseforthedisseminationofliteratureinthe streets.Theywereacompleteand overwhelmingsuccess,andthatexplainedwhyMr.Kensithadcalled themanabjectandcontemptiblefailure.(Laughter.)

Mr.JamesBritten,hon.secretary CatholicTruthSociety,deniedthe statementsthatCatholicswouldrot allowtheGospelstobereadbythe People.Theirsocietyhadsoldmany thousandcopiesoftheGospelsbeautifullyproducedforapenny. CardinalBourne,referringtothe suggestionofaCatholicPress Agency,saidthematterhadbeen beforehimindifferentformsforfour years,butthedifficultywastheenormouscapitalrequired.

LABOURORGANISATION.

TheannualconferenceoftheCatholicTradeUnionists'washeld, whenaresolutionwasadoptedprotestingagainstthesecondaryschool regulationsinasmuchasbytheirantidenominationalarticlestheydenied CatholichighereducationtothechildrenofCatholicworkingmen,closed theranksoftheCatholicteaching professionagainstthem,andlowered thepurchasingpowerofeveryworkingmanwhowasunabletoacceptan educationofanundenominational character.

TheConferencealsodeclaredagainsttheprincipleofseculareducation.

opinionmightbeworsethanuseless, becauseanythinglikelegislationina Paniconthesesubjectsasaruleled tonothing,andifitledtosomethingitledtoharm.Theyhadhad anexamplewithinthelasttwo monthsoflegislationinapanic,and asfarashewasabletogatherthat legislationwasalreadyinoperative.

THECHURCHANDTHESTAGE.

InspeakingofEngland,hewas thinkingofthatwiderandgreater worldwhichlookedtoEnglandas itscentreofgovernment,oratleast astheoldMotherland.Atthetime ofthebreachwiththeHolySeethe Englishtonguewasspokenbutlittle beyondtheirborders,andthewhole Populationwasnotmorethan4,0no, n.).SincethentheEnglishtongue hadextendedandhadbeenexerted onthesideofreligiousdisunionand disruption,notinthebeginningof setpurpose,butoutofaspiritofresi-tanceandhostilitytothecentral authorityoftheCatholicChurch.

Therewasarrayedagainsttheidea ofunityavastarmyle,o00,o0o strong,towhomthatideawasforeignifnotabsolutelyrepugnant.

TheEnglish-speakingworldhad,as farasthemaioritewasconcerned, losttheCatholicideaofreligious unity.Itwasaproblemasgreatas theworldhadeverseen,andthey mightwellloseheartwereitssolutiontodependentirelyonhuman means.

Thebestwayofrenderingthishelp andencouragementwasforfederal bodiestoformtradeunionsections notnecessarilyconsistingoffederationists,buttinderthecontrolofthe federations,withtheobjectofhelpingCatholictradeunioniststoorganisefortheadvanceandprotectionoftheirinterestsasCatholics, notonlytowardsunionists,butto thosemasseswhowerenotprotected bymembershipinanyunion,and werevitallyaffectedbythepresent socialupheaval.

Thefederationsshouldextendtheir Protectionandsupportbyallthe machinery,religiousandcivil,that wasplacedwithintheirreach.This couldbestbedonebyafederation securingasfaraspossibleadequate CatholicrepresentationonCounty andBoroughCouncils,Boardsof Guardians,andotherpublicbodies.

Hollandwasabrilliantexampleof theblessingofCatholicorganisation, whilethefruitsoforganisationin Belgiumhadgiventhelietothe calumnythattheCatholicreligion wasthefoeofnational)roepnity. (Cheers.)

CATHOLICLITERATURE.

IntheafternoonCardinalBourne

CardinalBournesaidheregarded theirorganisationasavery,importantfactorintheLabourorganisationofthecountry.TheCatholic Church,whenshehadthesupreme controlofthecountriesofEurope, neverhesitatedtoholdandencourage tradesunionism.TobeagoodCatholictradeunionisttherewerethree thingstheyhadtorecognisetothe full.Inthefirstplacetheyhad recognisetherightofAlmightyGod, andtorecognise,therefore,thebindingforceoftheTenCommandments, whichmustbeatthefoundationof everything.NoLabourorganisation, nostruggle,howeverlegitimateit mightbefortherightsoftheworkers,couldeverabolishtheTenCommandments.

TheChurchandtheStage,and HomeMissionswereamongstthe subjectsdiscussedontheclosingday oftheCatholicCongressinNorwich. Theday'sproceedingsweremost enthusiasticmostofthesections werevisitedbyCardinalBourne.At themeetingoftheCatholicStage Guild,FatherThomasKelly,S.J., readapaperontheinfluenceofthe stageoncharacter.Hesaidthe Churchinthepasthadnotcasttoo favourableaneyeonactorsand theirart.Neitherhadsocietyat large,andthelawhadconsistently Placedthemonthelowestrungofthe socialladder,classingthemamong "roguesandvagabonds."Thissuspicionanddistrustwasnotwithout cause,andasfortheChurch,it wascertainshewouldneverhaveis suedsuchseverelegislationhadshe notexperiencedthedangersandevils shehadtocombat. HedealtwiththeimpurityanddebaucheryoftheearlyGreekandRomanplays,andquotedSirCharles Santleyassayingthatnoclassof Peopleweresubjecttosuchperilsand trialsastheatreartists.Theboxofficereceiptsweretheobjectaimedat. Theydidnotthrowopentheoperatingroomsoftheirhospitalstothe morbidcuriosityofthepublic,nor shouldthemoralwoundsandsores ofhumanitybehelduptoviewwithoutnecessity. Iftheinfluenceofbadplayswas badforthehearer,itcouldnotbe goodfortheactor.FamiliarityWith Portrayalofsuchcharacterswould

wasanOut-Patientoftwo MelbourneHospitals.

DoubtlessthereweresomewhoexpectedtofindinthegreatChimerof theUnitedStatesofAmerica,the centreoftheeffortstobringthe mindsofthosewhospoketheEnglishtongueintoobediencetotheHolySee,buttheirbrethrenacrossthe seaswerehandicappedbyanalready longeranddeeply-rootedProtestant tradition,andthis,withotherreasons,wouldmakethetaskalong andtoilsomeone.TheirownCatholicsofAustralia,NewZealand,and IndiaandotherpartsoftheBritish Empirewoulddotheirpart,butit couldhardlybecomethemaininfluenceintherestorationoftheEnglish-speakingworldtotheCatholic Church.

Buttherewasonecountrywhich seemeddestinedtotaketheleading Placeinbridgingoverthechasm.It wastoCanadatheymustnaturally lookiftheyweretofindoncemore Alinkthatwoulduniteallthose whousedtheEnelPhspeech.Faith Andlanguagehaduntilrecenttimes workedhand-in-handinCanada.CanadianshadconsecratedtheFrench languagetothepreservationofthe

PresidedoverageneralmeetingarrangedbytheCatholicTruthSociety,whenthesubjectofdiscussion was"CatholicLiterature.".hisEminencesaidthatiffiftyyearsago CardinalNewmancouldhaveftreseen thedevelopmentswhichpadtaken placeintheCatholictiteratIresince thosedayshewouldhavebeenastonished,andwouldhavegreatlyrejoiced,andhemightnavemodified someofhisphrases.

Mgr.R.H.Bensonlaid:tressupontheimportanceofthePressindisseminatingthetruth,end;.ythe factthatthePresshadsucceeded verylargelytothefunctionsofthe pulpitinthepropagationofthefaith heheldthattoneglectthePress wastocourtdisasterandfailure.

SpeakingonasubjectinWelchhe wasgreatlyinterested,hecalledattentiontowhathedescribedasthe falsenewssentfromtheContinent. Forinstance,itseemedimporeible togetstraightforwardnewsfrom Portugal.Lieswerecirculatedby eventhemostreputablejournals, lieswhichitwasdifficulttocatch up.ThepatienceofCatholicsonthe Continenthadatlastreachedits limit,andtheywerebeginningtoorganiseforthemselvesaCatholic PressAgencyinorderthathonest newsmightbesuppliedtotheEnglishnewspapers.

Thenagaintheyhadtorecognise therightsofothermen,thosewho ownedcapitalandusedcapitaland whoonaccountoftheirow4nersbip ofcapitalbecameemployersoflabour.Theyhadrightsofothermenthosewhoownedhadbeenopposed, butbecausearightwasopposedit didnotceasetoexist.Theyhadalsotorecognisethefactthataman ifhewishednottojoinaTradeUnionwasatlibertynottojoin.Thee mustaskthemselvesifthereasonfor withholdingtheirlabourwassufficienttojustifytheminflictingon theirwivesandfamiliestheprivationswhichmightcometothem. Ishallnoteasilyforgetmyfirst visit,toSerpentine.IleftPerthby a"flowerexcursion"trainonaSundaymorning,andthefamiliarsurroundingsofthecitywere%erysoon leftbehind.Low,stunted-looking treesoneithersidegavethescenea ratherdesolateappearance,although asyetwewerescarcelyintheopen country.AfterwehadpassedCanniagtonthebluehillstotheeast lookedverynearindeed,andalittle fartheronweevenpassedafew smallvineyardsdottedaboutonboth sidesoftheline.Theappearanceof thecountryfromheretoArmadale wasindeedpleasant.Luxuriantgrass andaprofusionofthoseharbingers ofsummer,thecommondandelion, mettheeyeeverywhere.BetweenArmadaleandSerpentineorchardsand vineyardswerenumerous,andthe hills,werenowveryclosetouson theeast.Theywere,however,soon blottedoutfromsight,bytheheavy showersofrainwhichcommencedto fall.Theprospectwasverycheerless.Itwasstillrainingwhenwe reachedSerpentine,butwedeterminedtobravetheelementsaidwalkI tothefalls.Wereachedthemafter halfanhour'swalking.Theywere certainlyworththetroubleofwalkingthrolghpouringraintosee.The largefallisdividedintotwoportionsbyahugerockwhichblocks thecentreofitspassage,andthe waterfallsintothedeepbasinbelowwithaContintioll,roar,sending upcloudsofspray,whichcanbeseen risingabovethesurroundingtrees evenbeforeonecomesinsightofthe falls.Fromvariouspointsonthe sharpslopesoneithersidethefalls presentamagnificentview,aswell asfromthelowgroundimmediately infront.Afterthefalls,thestream narrows,andflowsbetweenlow banksthicklyovershadedwithbushes andtrees-no,doubtaverywelcome shadeinhotweather.Atsome points,wherethebedofthestream isrocky,aseriesofrapidsisformed,whichaddmuchtothebeautyof thescene.Infact,allthecountryin theneighbourhoodofthefallswill wellrepaythetroubleofavisit.

HisExcellency,inthecourseofhis address,referredtotheoccasionas onegreatenoughtohecalledhistoric.Hebelieveditwouldfinda placenotonlyinthehistoryofAustralia,butinthehistoryoftheEmpire.Itwassurelyamarkofitsimportancethathehadreceivedacable messagefromHisMajestytheKing, andfromtheImperialGovernment, congratulatingtheCommonwealth Governmentandpeopleuponthe event.HisExcellencyreferredtothe importanceoftherailwayfroma strategicpointofviewinthedefence ofAustralia,andtothegreatfactor itwouldproveinthedevelopmentof SouthandWesternAustralia.It wouldalsohelptofosteraspiritof Australiannationality,andwiden thenationaloutlookonquestionsof domesticpolicy.Itwouldbring WesternAustraliainamoreactual sensethanheretoforeintotheFederationoftheAustralianStates.At theconclusionofhisaddressthe Governor-General,amidthegreatest enthusiasm,turnedthefirstsod.He afterwardsacceptedfromMrFisher, asamementooftheoccasion,agoldenspade.

TheGovernor-General,inreplying tothetoastof"TheKing,"read themessageshehadreceivedfrom HisMajestyandfromtheimperial Government;alsoamessageofcongratulationfromSirGeraldStrickland.Hepaidatributetothework whichhadbeenaccomplishedbythe greatpioneerofexplorationandentersriee,SirJohnForrest.SirJohn hadbeenoneofthefirst'tomakethe journeyacrossthesouthernportion oftheContinent,andasoneoft112

TheMinisterforDefence,whoproposedthetoast,dweltonthegreat importanceoftherailwayinthedefenceofAustralia,inwhichrespect itwas,infact,indispensaule.Asa representativeofWesternAustralia, hewasdoublyinterestedintherailway.HespeciallydesiredtomentionthelateMr.Vosper,atonetime amemberoftheWesternAustralian Parliament,andoneofthetirstand staunchestadvocatesofthisrailway.

TheMinisterforHomeAffairs(Mr KingO'Malley)saidtheturningof thefirstsodthatdaywasoneof thosesupreme°cessionspropheticof Australia'sgreatness.Hereferredto previoussimilarhistoricceremonies inAustraliaduringthepast63years andtothemileageofrailwaysinall thecountriesoftheworld.

ThePremier0fSouthAustraliareferredtotheceremonyasthebeginningofthefirstgreatnationalwore whichdieCommonwealthGovernmenthadundertaken.He(-ongrattilatedSirJohnForrestonseeingthe nearconsummationofthisgreat workonwhichhehadsolongset hisheart.Hehonedthattheywould soonseethelinkingupoftheNorth withtheSouth.

Concluding,thelecturerpointed outthattheycouldnevermakea PeoplemoralbyanActofPernaParliamentoranappealtopatriotism.Theemustappealtoahigher court,namely,thecourtofconscience.ItwasbecausetheCatholic Churchhadanappealtothatcourt thatshesuccededinguardingher childrenfromthedangerswhichwere eatingtheveryvitalsoutofsociety.Mr.0.C.Bealebroughtouta fewyearsagoamonumentalwork of"RacialDecay."Hewasthoroughlyqualifiedforsuchanundertaking, ashewasappointedbytheGovernmentchairmanofthecommittee whichinquiredintotheevilmethods obtaininginAustralia.He(Mgr. Phelan)wouldtakefromMr.Beale twoquotations,inwhichhedwelt onthefreedomoftheCatholicPeoplefromthosevices."TheRoman Catholicchurch,"hesays,"hasneveratanytimeleftitsposition opentodoubtuponthematter.Its recorddataareplainandample. EucharisticCongressesareorganisedgatheringsofclergyandlaity forthepurposeofhonouringthe REALPRESENCEofOurDivine LordintheBlessedEucharist,and ofseekingthebeet,meansofspreadingknowledgeandloveofthisMysterythroughouttheworld.The REALPRESENCEofJesusinthe BlessedEucharistisoneofthe principaldogmasoftheCatholic Church.Itmay,trulybecalledthe heirloomorthetreasureofgreat pricewhichinspires.ourdevotionand solidifiesourunityalltheworld over.

ThemainadvantageofaEucharisticCongressistheconcentrationof thethoughtsofthefaithfulupon theGreatMysteryoftheAltar,and inmakingknownthevariousmeans bywhichEucharisticdevotionmay beimplantedandfosteredinthe heartsofthepeople.

TheEucharisticCongressatVienna promisedtosurpasseventhemost successfulofitspredecessorsbothin attendanceandmagnificence.Wefeel assuredthatthemostsanguineexpectationshavebeenmorethanfulfilled,andthatthegreatCongress hasaddedanotherbrilliantpageto thehistoryoftheCatholicChurch. Hadtherebeentheslightesthitch intheproceedings,orthefaintest signoffailure,the"fablegrams" wouldhavesuppliedtheBritishand AustralianPresswithwelcomecopy thatwouldbestretchedandamplified,exaggeratedanddisplayedto thehestadvantagesolongasittendedtolowerinanywaythefair fameoftheCatholic'Church. Fromelaboratepreparationsthat weremadefortheCongress,we learnthattheOrganisingCommittee hadissuedoveronethousandticketstoEnglishspeakingmembers, thatlargeandrepresentativecontingentsfromeverycountryofEuropeaswellasfromtheUnited Statesand,thevariousRepublicsof SouthAmerica,wereanxiouslylook-

Mr.ProwsetriestocombatthereplyofMr.JosephDevlintothecabledversionoftheincidentatCastledawson,byquotingalettertothe London"Times"oftheRev.Robert Barron,Presbyterianminister.The statementinthecablewasthat"at Castledawson,inLondonderry,yesterdaysomeHiberniansreturning fromaNationalistmeetingattacked 5(a)Sundayschoolchildrenwhowere onanexcursion,andwerecarryinga UnionJack.ThepoliceandtheProtestantresidentsofthetownrescuedthechildrenafterahalf-hour's freefight."Thishasbeenprovedto beabsolutelyfalse,evenbytheadmissionsoftheRev.RobertBarron himself,whoinhisevidencewasunableto.givethenameofevenone childorwomanwhowasinjuredin anyway,andwho,furthermore,had tostateincross-examinationthat "thechildren,women,andgirlsall gothomesafelythatevening."

DeathhasbeenverybusyinMidlandJunctionduringthepastcouple ofmonths,andunfortunatelyithas takenawaysomeofourbestcitizens.TheChinchinMidlandhas sustainedmanygreatlosseslately, butnonegreaterthanwhichitsufferedduringthepastweek.On Thursdayeveninglastweekoneof ourmostrespectedcitizens,oneof ourmostexemplaryCatholics,and oneofourverybestChurchworkers, passedawayinthepersonofMrs. PatrickO'Meara.Inthevigourof life,inthepossessionofallthat couldmakelifeenjoyable,andata timewhenherservicestoherhome andtheChurchseemedsadlyneeded, shewascalledtoherreward.On theMondayprevioustoherdeath shewasstrickendownwithpneumonia,andaltisoughfromamedical Pointofvieweverythingseemedfavourabletoarecovery,sheseemed tohaveapremonitionthather deathwascloseathand,andsbe preparedforitwithanearnestness,a calmness,andacouragethatwas trulyedifying.Theendcameclackly,though unawarestoher. Theformationof,acricketteamto entertheChurchAssociationwasdiscussed,andtheenthusiasmofthe membersresultedinateambeing formed,andallarrangementsmade forcarryingouttheidea.Themembersareconfidentofholdingtheir ownwithanyteamwhichmaybe putintothefieldagainstthem.

JosephSmythwasborninSouth Australia56yearsago,andbefore comingtothisStatehewasengaged infarmingpursuitsinLaura,ehere hisparentsresided.Heenteredthe W.A.policeservicejustoveraquarterofacentury ago, andforre yearsheldthepositionofSergeant, thiswell-meritedpromotionbeing conferredwhileinchargeofthe BroadArrowdistrict.Hisexpertmiceextendedfrom,thenorthernto thesouthernportionsoftheState, andatallcentreshewasgenerally esteemed.Heleaverawidowand familyofsevento.mourntheirloss (sixsonsandonedaughter).

ThefuneraltookplaceonMonday afternoon,andwaslargelyattended. PriortotheintermentaReeulem MasswascelebratedattheCatholic ChurchbyDeanWalsh,whoalsoofficiatedattheburialobseeules.May hissoulrestinpeace.

OnlastSunday,the15thinst., HisLordshipDr.Cluneadministered Confirmationtoalargenumberof candidatespresentedatToodyay. Aboutseventy,includingsomeadults wereconfirmed.TheirgeneralproficiencyinChristianDoctrineasdisplayedintheirfinalexaminationfor Confirmationwasmostsatisfactory. Andthelongdistancethatmanyof themsowillinglycame(someofthem camefromtheneighbourhoodofBelgart,adistanceofsome24miles, whileothersjourneyedtheproions dayfromChidrow'sWell),alsotestifytotheirsplendidpracticalFaith. P.J.CoffeymetwithafatalaccidentonWednesdaylastintheGolden Horseshoewhileengagedinundergroundwork.He,withsomecousins,cametoBoulderaboutsixyears ago,andsincethenbyhishonest, unassumingmannerwonforhimthe goodfeelingandcomradeshipofeveryonewithwhomhecameincontactwith.Therespectwithwhich hewasheldwasshownonFriday, whenthelargebodyofpeoeleturnedouttopaytheir'lastrespectsto theonetheyallrespected. bothineducationalmethodsand intheattitudeofpublicopiniontowardseducation,havetakenplace alloverthecivilisedworld.The samemayalsobesaidastothe necessityofmakingreligiontheAlly surebasisofmoraleducation.Grave dissatisfactionisfeltinmanyquarterswiththepresentpositionofeducationinVictoria,andparticularly withtheworkingoftheStateDepartmentofEducation.Moreo.:er, thereseemstobenocoursesolikely tobringaboutreligiouspeaceasthe holdingofaRoyalCommission.All citizenswillagreewiththeCatholic FederationthattheprogressofVictoriaisseriouslyretardedso,longas (a)theeducationsystemisin,many respectsbehindthatofothercountries,(b)thedeepestconvictionsof manyparentsarefloutedandoffendedbythepresentsecularsystem. Hence,thebestinterestsoftheState urgentlydemandafullandfreeinquiryintoboththesecularandreligioussidesofeducationatanearlydatebyarepresentativeRoyal Commission.Areasonablesettlement ofthereligiousquestionhasbeen variouslyattemptedandattainedin GreatBritainandIreland,inCalf/4 da,Newfoundland,andothercolonies,illGermany,Holland,Belgium, andelsewheresincethedateofthe lastRoyalCommissioninVictoria."

Atthefootofthehill,wherethe Promontoryjoinedthemainroad, andwherethetrolleysandtherailroadmadeaccesstothefartherparadisepossible,snuggledtogetherthe smallhousesthatshelteredthepeoplewhoservedthosewholivedfurtheron.Herewerefoundthegardeners,thewasherwomen,thedairymen,andProduce-growers,whosuppliedthenecessitiesofthehill.Amongthemwasoneparticularlyneat andshiningwhitehouse,inwhich livedthepapercarrier.Everymorning,beforeanybutthemaidsonthe hillwerestirring,herodearoundits circle,deliveringthemorningpapers, andeverynightatsunsetherepeatedhiscoursewiththeeveningissues. HewasThomasLynch,andhehad servedhiscountrythroughtheCivil War,enlisting,aboyofeighteen,at Lincoln'sfirstcallfortroops,and stayingwiththeArmytillRichmondwastaken,andanhonourable dischargemorethanearned.Hehad beenabuglerinhisfirstyearofservice,hadcheeredhiscompanywhen thingsweregoingsobitterlywrong fortheNorth,andhopewasrather adoggedinsistenceoffaiththananythingmorecloselydeservingthe brightername.Later,hehadfought intheranksandhadbeenpromoted toacaptaincy.Whenthewarwas overheretiredtothelittlehouseat thefootofthehill,cultivatedhis 'bitofground,fishedonthesay,deliveredpapers,windinghis',lisleas berodeinhisoldarmycloak,around thehill,andreareduphisonechild inthereligionofhisIrishforebears andinintensepatriotism.

Notinthiscentenaryyear,butsome yearsago,Mr..A.Wilmot,ofGrahamstown,SouthAfrica,discussed theincidentinthe"SouthAfrican CatholicMagazine,"andseemedto consideritasortofrewardforall the'benevolentobjectsthatCharles Dickenshadservedbyhisbooks, suchas,"TheChimes,"ofwhichhe himself,wrote"Iamfierce'tofinish inaspiritbearingsomeaffinityto thoseoftruthandmercy,andto shamethecruelandthecanting.Yes, verily,andwithGod'shelpsoIwill. IhavenotforgottenmyCatechism!" ButMr.Wilmotendswithastrange statement."Thismanseemstohave deservedarecompenseandIrememberthelatereveredBishopRicards remarkingthatthisvisionofthe BlessedVirginrecordedabovewas possiblygrantedtoDickensasaspecialopportunitybywayofreward."

Onaccountofitsconnexionwith thisdreamofCharlesDickens,I avepreservedapageof'anoldnumofthe"ContemporaryReview" omanarticlebyMissJuliaWedgewoodonRichardHoltHuttonofthe "Spectator."Thisverycleverbut notveryorthodoxladyunderstates thestrengthofMr.Hutton's,Catholictendencies.Hekeptuptheclosestfriendshipwitha,Catholicpriest tilltheveryend,andconstantlyassistedat.Mass. havebeentold thatattheOffertoryhewouldconcealapieceofgoldunderapieceof silver,inordernottoseemtooliberal.HisdevotiontoJohnHenry Newmaniswellknown,andhada shareinbreakingdownEnglishprejudiceagainstthegreatConvert.
