Ihavenearlypassedovertheexcellent"hits"onthelatest"Eugenics"fad.Thisisasubjectwhich Catholicpapersshouldfollowand clinchthefallaciesastheygo.A hatefulandhorribletheory,andas absurdandfalseasitishateful.A goodresolutionwasth9,t,oftheCatholicdoctorsinconference,which ineffectwasthatthebestmethodof "Eugenics"orimprovingthehuman stockistheold,oldexhortation, "KeeptheCommandments."
Isaidsomethingattheoutset aboutbrevity.Believeme,mydear readersofthe"Record,"IamcoveredwithconfusionwhenIseehow Ihaverunoncountingthegoldto hegatheredinourCatholic1.aper, andhavenotyethalftoldthetale. There parer,hutit isthespiritofdiscernmentandappreciationonthereader'spartthat islacking.
Somepeoplewhoreadmynote aboutthelittlenewspaperboysin lastweek'sissue,arestillwondering whythatsimpleandedifyingnote appearedinthiscolumn.Whenwill theyseethattheirwonderisavery severecommentupon"societyfclk," includingtheirdearselves? Recognisingthatthe"rankisbut theguineastamp,"andknowingthat "kindheartsaremorethancoronets,"Ishallalwayskeepthiscolumnopentothepooraswellasthe rich;highideals,honesty,industry, culture,andcharityarethequalificationsnecessaryforanhonourable mention.

TheFederationshoulddoallin theirpowertohelpandencourage thoseCatholicswhointhelabour movementwereendeavouring,not withoutsuccess,toimpressuponthe leadersofthatmovementthatthe welfareoftheworkingclasseswould innowaybeservedbythesacrificeorcompromiseofthoseprinciples which,beingfoundedonnaturaland Divinelaw,wereessentialtothe well-being,eveninthisworld,ofthe humanrace.
Helookedforwardtothedaywhen thegreatWesleyanbuildingonthe siteoftheoldaquariumatWestminster,wouldfallintotheirhands. Mr.JamesBritten,hon.secretary CatholicTruthSociety,deniedthe statementsthatCatholicswouldrot allowtheGospelstobereadbythe People.Theirsocietyhadsoldmany thousandcopiesoftheGospelsbeautifullyproducedforapenny. LABOURORGANISATION.
TheannualconferenceoftheCatholicTradeUnionists'washeld, whenaresolutionwasadoptedprotestingagainstthesecondaryschool regulationsinasmuchasbytheirantidenominationalarticlestheydenied CatholichighereducationtothechildrenofCatholicworkingmen,closed theranksoftheCatholicteaching professionagainstthem,andlowered thepurchasingpowerofeveryworkingmanwhowasunabletoacceptan educationofanundenominational character.
TheConferencealsodeclaredagainsttheprincipleofseculareducation.
opinionmightbeworsethanuseless, becauseanythinglikelegislationina Paniconthesesubjectsasaruleled tonothing,andifitledtosomethingitledtoharm.Theyhadhad anexamplewithinthelasttwo monthsoflegislationinapanic,and asfarashewasabletogatherthat legislationwasalreadyinoperative.
THECHURCHANDTHESTAGE.
InspeakingofEngland,hewas thinkingofthatwiderandgreater worldwhichlookedtoEnglandas itscentreofgovernment,oratleast astheoldMotherland.Atthetime ofthebreachwiththeHolySeethe Englishtonguewasspokenbutlittle beyondtheirborders,andthewhole Populationwasnotmorethan4,0no, n.).SincethentheEnglishtongue hadextendedandhadbeenexerted onthesideofreligiousdisunionand disruption,notinthebeginningof setpurpose,butoutofaspiritofresi-tanceandhostilitytothecentral authorityoftheCatholicChurch.
Therewasarrayedagainsttheidea ofunityavastarmyle,o00,o0o strong,towhomthatideawasforeignifnotabsolutelyrepugnant.
TheEnglish-speakingworldhad,as farasthemaioritewasconcerned, losttheCatholicideaofreligious unity.Itwasaproblemasgreatas theworldhadeverseen,andthey mightwellloseheartwereitssolutiontodependentirelyonhuman means.
Thebestwayofrenderingthishelp andencouragementwasforfederal bodiestoformtradeunionsections notnecessarilyconsistingoffederationists,buttinderthecontrolofthe federations,withtheobjectofhelpingCatholictradeunioniststoorganisefortheadvanceandprotectionoftheirinterestsasCatholics, notonlytowardsunionists,butto thosemasseswhowerenotprotected bymembershipinanyunion,and werevitallyaffectedbythepresent socialupheaval.
Thefederationsshouldextendtheir Protectionandsupportbyallthe machinery,religiousandcivil,that wasplacedwithintheirreach.This couldbestbedonebyafederation securingasfaraspossibleadequate CatholicrepresentationonCounty andBoroughCouncils,Boardsof Guardians,andotherpublicbodies.
Hollandwasabrilliantexampleof theblessingofCatholicorganisation, whilethefruitsoforganisationin Belgiumhadgiventhelietothe calumnythattheCatholicreligion wasthefoeofnational)roepnity. (Cheers.)
CATHOLICLITERATURE.
IntheafternoonCardinalBourne
CardinalBournesaidheregarded theirorganisationasavery,importantfactorintheLabourorganisationofthecountry.TheCatholic Church,whenshehadthesupreme controlofthecountriesofEurope, neverhesitatedtoholdandencourage tradesunionism.TobeagoodCatholictradeunionisttherewerethree thingstheyhadtorecognisetothe full.Inthefirstplacetheyhad recognisetherightofAlmightyGod, andtorecognise,therefore,thebindingforceoftheTenCommandments, whichmustbeatthefoundationof everything.NoLabourorganisation, nostruggle,howeverlegitimateit mightbefortherightsoftheworkers,couldeverabolishtheTenCommandments.
TheChurchandtheStage,and HomeMissionswereamongstthe subjectsdiscussedontheclosingday oftheCatholicCongressinNorwich. Theday'sproceedingsweremost enthusiasticmostofthesections werevisitedbyCardinalBourne.At themeetingoftheCatholicStage Guild,FatherThomasKelly,S.J., readapaperontheinfluenceofthe stageoncharacter.Hesaidthe Churchinthepasthadnotcasttoo favourableaneyeonactorsand theirart.Neitherhadsocietyat large,andthelawhadconsistently Placedthemonthelowestrungofthe socialladder,classingthemamong "roguesandvagabonds."Thissuspicionanddistrustwasnotwithout cause,andasfortheChurch,it wascertainshewouldneverhaveis suedsuchseverelegislationhadshe notexperiencedthedangersandevils shehadtocombat. HedealtwiththeimpurityanddebaucheryoftheearlyGreekandRomanplays,andquotedSirCharles Santleyassayingthatnoclassof Peopleweresubjecttosuchperilsand trialsastheatreartists.Theboxofficereceiptsweretheobjectaimedat. Theydidnotthrowopentheoperatingroomsoftheirhospitalstothe morbidcuriosityofthepublic,nor shouldthemoralwoundsandsores ofhumanitybehelduptoviewwithoutnecessity. Iftheinfluenceofbadplayswas badforthehearer,itcouldnotbe goodfortheactor.FamiliarityWith Portrayalofsuchcharacterswould

DoubtlessthereweresomewhoexpectedtofindinthegreatChimerof theUnitedStatesofAmerica,the centreoftheeffortstobringthe mindsofthosewhospoketheEnglishtongueintoobediencetotheHolySee,buttheirbrethrenacrossthe seaswerehandicappedbyanalready longeranddeeply-rootedProtestant tradition,andthis,withotherreasons,wouldmakethetaskalong andtoilsomeone.TheirownCatholicsofAustralia,NewZealand,and IndiaandotherpartsoftheBritish Empirewoulddotheirpart,butit couldhardlybecomethemaininfluenceintherestorationoftheEnglish-speakingworldtotheCatholic Church.
Buttherewasonecountrywhich seemeddestinedtotaketheleading Placeinbridgingoverthechasm.It wastoCanadatheymustnaturally lookiftheyweretofindoncemore Alinkthatwoulduniteallthose whousedtheEnelPhspeech.Faith Andlanguagehaduntilrecenttimes workedhand-in-handinCanada.CanadianshadconsecratedtheFrench languagetothepreservationofthe
PresidedoverageneralmeetingarrangedbytheCatholicTruthSociety,whenthesubjectofdiscussion was"CatholicLiterature.".hisEminencesaidthatiffiftyyearsago CardinalNewmancouldhaveftreseen thedevelopmentswhichpadtaken placeintheCatholictiteratIresince thosedayshewouldhavebeenastonished,andwouldhavegreatlyrejoiced,andhemightnavemodified someofhisphrases.
Mgr.R.H.Bensonlaid:tressupontheimportanceofthePressindisseminatingthetruth,end;.ythe factthatthePresshadsucceeded verylargelytothefunctionsofthe pulpitinthepropagationofthefaith heheldthattoneglectthePress wastocourtdisasterandfailure.
SpeakingonasubjectinWelchhe wasgreatlyinterested,hecalledattentiontowhathedescribedasthe falsenewssentfromtheContinent. Forinstance,itseemedimporeible togetstraightforwardnewsfrom Portugal.Lieswerecirculatedby eventhemostreputablejournals, lieswhichitwasdifficulttocatch up.ThepatienceofCatholicsonthe Continenthadatlastreachedits limit,andtheywerebeginningtoorganiseforthemselvesaCatholic PressAgencyinorderthathonest newsmightbesuppliedtotheEnglishnewspapers.
Thenagaintheyhadtorecognise therightsofothermen,thosewho ownedcapitalandusedcapitaland whoonaccountoftheirow4nersbip ofcapitalbecameemployersoflabour.Theyhadrightsofothermenthosewhoownedhadbeenopposed, butbecausearightwasopposedit didnotceasetoexist.Theyhadalsotorecognisethefactthataman ifhewishednottojoinaTradeUnionwasatlibertynottojoin.Thee mustaskthemselvesifthereasonfor withholdingtheirlabourwassufficienttojustifytheminflictingon theirwivesandfamiliestheprivationswhichmightcometothem. Then,again,theyhadtoaskthemselveswhetherthereasonswhich seemedtocallfortheexerciseofthis libertyofactionweresufficientto justifythemininflictiveonthewhole communityperhapstremendoussufferingsandthedislocationofsociety.Thesameremarnsappliedto ownersofcapital.Theonlyremedy forthepresentunrestwastorecognisetheteachingsofChristianityand therightswhichallmennossessed.

Concluding,thelecturerpointed outthattheycouldnevermakea PeoplemoralbyanActofPernaParliamentoranappealtopatriotism.Theemustappealtoahigher court,namely,thecourtofconscience.ItwasbecausetheCatholic Churchhadanappealtothatcourt thatshesuccededinguardingher childrenfromthedangerswhichwere eatingtheveryvitalsoutofsociety.Mr.0.C.Bealebroughtouta fewyearsagoamonumentalwork of"RacialDecay."Hewasthoroughlyqualifiedforsuchanundertaking, ashewasappointedbytheGovernmentchairmanofthecommittee whichinquiredintotheevilmethods obtaininginAustralia.He(Mgr. Phelan)wouldtakefromMr.Beale twoquotations,inwhichhedwelt onthefreedomoftheCatholicPeoplefromthosevices."TheRoman Catholicchurch,"hesays,"hasneveratanytimeleftitsposition opentodoubtuponthematter.Its recorddataareplainandample. EucharisticCongressesareorganisedgatheringsofclergyandlaity forthepurposeofhonouringthe REALPRESENCEofOurDivine LordintheBlessedEucharist,and ofseekingthebeet,meansofspreadingknowledgeandloveofthisMysterythroughouttheworld.The REALPRESENCEofJesusinthe BlessedEucharistisoneofthe principaldogmasoftheCatholic Church.Itmay,trulybecalledthe heirloomorthetreasureofgreat pricewhichinspires.ourdevotionand solidifiesourunityalltheworld over.
ThemainadvantageofaEucharisticCongressistheconcentrationof thethoughtsofthefaithfulupon theGreatMysteryoftheAltar,and inmakingknownthevariousmeans bywhichEucharisticdevotionmay beimplantedandfosteredinthe heartsofthepeople.
TheFirstCongressoweditsinspire ationtoBishopGaston.deSegur, andwasheldatLille,France,21st June,1881.Thesecondwasheldat Avignonin1882,andtheThirdat Liegein1883.TheFourthCongress, whichmetatFribourg,inSwitzerlandin1885,waspresidedoverby Mgr,Mermillod,BishopofLausanne andGeneva,whoseinfluenceandexampledrewtotheCongressmembers oftheCantonalGovernment,officers ofthearmy,judgesofthecourts, andthousandsofCatholicsfromall overEurope.
TheSixteenthCongresswasheld atRomeinJune,19o5.PopePiusX addedtothesolemnityoftheoccasionbycelebratingMassatthe openingof,theSessions,bygivinga specialaudiencetothedelegatesand bybeingpresentattheclosingPro cession.ThisCongressintheEternalCitywasthedawnofthemovementthatledtothePapalDecree ofDecember,1905,advisingdaily CommuniontoalltheFaithful.

TheEucharisticCongressatVienna promisedtosurpasseventhemost successfulofitspredecessorsbothin attendanceandmagnificence.Wefeel assuredthatthemostsanguineexpectationshavebeenmorethanfulfilled,andthatthegreatCongress hasaddedanotherbrilliantpageto thehistoryoftheCatholicChurch. Hadtherebeentheslightesthitch intheproceedings,orthefaintest signoffailure,the"fablegrams" wouldhavesuppliedtheBritishand AustralianPresswithwelcomecopy thatwouldbestretchedandamplified,exaggeratedanddisplayedto thehestadvantagesolongasittendedtolowerinanywaythefair fameoftheCatholic'Church. Fromelaboratepreparationsthat weremadefortheCongress,we learnthattheOrganisingCommittee hadissuedoveronethousandticketstoEnglishspeakingmembers, thatlargeandrepresentativecontingentsfromeverycountryofEuropeaswellasfromtheUnited Statesand,thevariousRepublicsof SouthAmerica,wereanxiouslylook-

Sir,-Inyourissueofthe12thinst. Mr.ProwsetriestocombatthereplyofMr.JosephDevlintothecabledversionoftheincidentatCastledawson,byquotingalettertothe London"Times"oftheRev.Robert Barron,Presbyterianminister.The statementinthecablewasthat"at Castledawson,inLondonderry,yesterdaysomeHiberniansreturning fromaNationalistmeetingattacked 5(a)Sundayschoolchildrenwhowere onanexcursion,andwerecarryinga UnionJack.ThepoliceandtheProtestantresidentsofthetownrescuedthechildrenafterahalf-hour's freefight."Thishasbeenprovedto beabsolutelyfalse,evenbytheadmissionsoftheRev.RobertBarron himself,whoinhisevidencewasunableto.givethenameofevenone childorwomanwhowasinjuredin anyway,andwho,furthermore,had tostateincross-examinationthat "thechildren,women,andgirlsall gothomesafelythatevening."
The.Rev.RobertBarronalsosays: "ItwastheattackatCastledawson whichcausedtheattackontheRomanCatholicworkmenintheshipyards."InanswertothisIwill simplyquotefromtheLondon "Standard"ofAugust1,thewords oftheChiefSecretaryforIreland,in theHouseofCommons.Interalia, Mr.Birrellsaid"Outof2,000RomanCatholicworkmenemployedby HarlandandWolff,some 1,5o0were atpresentidle,havingbeendriven fromtheirwork.Suchastateof thingsmadeasituationoftheutmostdanger.Itwasofnouseaskingwhobeganit.Ofallquestion thatwasthemostfoolish.

DeathhasbeenverybusyinMidlandJunctionduringthepastcouple ofmonths,andunfortunatelyithas takenawaysomeofourbestcitizens.TheChinchinMidlandhas sustainedmanygreatlosseslately, butnonegreaterthanwhichitsufferedduringthepastweek.On Thursdayeveninglastweekoneof ourmostrespectedcitizens,oneof ourmostexemplaryCatholics,and oneofourverybestChurchworkers, passedawayinthepersonofMrs. PatrickO'Meara.Inthevigourof life,inthepossessionofallthat couldmakelifeenjoyable,andata timewhenherservicestoherhome andtheChurchseemedsadlyneeded, shewascalledtoherreward.On theMondayprevioustoherdeath shewasstrickendownwithpneumonia,andaltisoughfromamedical Pointofvieweverythingseemedfavourabletoarecovery,sheseemed tohaveapremonitionthather deathwascloseathand,andsbe preparedforitwithanearnestness,a calmness,andacouragethatwas trulyedifying.Theendcameclackly,though unawarestoher. OnSeptembererdMr.Poynton gaveaveryinstructiveandinterestinglectureiretheschoolroomtoa veryfaircrowdofmembersofthe Society,andbytheinteresttaken inthelecturerandhissubject,itis agreatsatisfactiontothemembers whoprocuredMr.Poynton'sservices fortheeveningthattheyatleast doneagoodservicefortheterm.
Aheartyvoteofthankstothe lecturerwascarriedbyacclamation, andconcludedaveryinteresting evening.

Onaccountofitsconnexionwith thisdreamofCharlesDickens,I avepreservedapageof'anoldnumofthe"ContemporaryReview" omanarticlebyMissJuliaWedgewoodonRichardHoltHuttonofthe "Spectator."Thisverycleverbut notveryorthodoxladyunderstates thestrengthofMr.Hutton's,Catholictendencies.Hekeptuptheclosestfriendshipwitha,Catholicpriest tilltheveryend,andconstantlyassistedat.Mass. havebeentold thatattheOffertoryhewouldconcealapieceofgoldunderapieceof silver,inordernottoseemtooliberal.HisdevotiontoJohnHenry Newmaniswellknown,andhada shareinbreakingdownEnglishprejudiceagainstthegreatConvert.
