Itisgiventocomparativelyfew men(saysthe"BaltimoreSun")to livetoseventy-eightyearsofage, withmindandbody torespond toimportantduties,tostillfewer tolookbackuponacareerofgreat usefulnessandhonour,andtofewer Yettofeelandknowthatafterso longaperiodofpublicworkthey faceonlyaworldoffriends,without asinglepersonalenemy.
Afitsubjectforcongratulation, therefore,isourgoodCardinal, JamesGibbons,whosesereneand simple,butwiseandpurelifehas endearedhimtomenofall creedsandofnocreedat all. Theciviccelebrationin honourofhisgoldenjubileegave himpublicassuranceofthegeneral goodwillandesteem,andpassing yearscanonlystrengthenthatsentimenttowardonewhosewhole strengthhasbeendevotedtothe causeofhumanityandreligion.

Ashappyasaboyoutofschool andbeamingwiththespiritofoptimism,CardinalGibbonsyesterday celebratedhisseventy-eighthbirthdayatthehomeofMr.T.Herbert Shriver,nearUnionMills,Carroll county.
TheCardinalwashappy.There wasnodoubtaboutthat.Ashehandledthemessagesofcongratulation receivedfromfriendsthroughoutthe countryhespokeofbowmuchsuch manifestationsofaffectionmeantto him.
TheCardinalloveswork,evenon hisbirthday.Thatiswhyagood Partofyesterdaywasspentbyhim instudyandreadingandinansweringthewellwishesofhisfriends. Hisbirthdaywasspentashewanted tospendit,freefromallformal celebration.
Hearoseearlyandsaidhisdaily Massat8o'clockinthechapelof theShriverhome.Hismorningwas spentinreadingandinansweringhis correspondence.Afterlunchhetook ashortrestandlaterintheafternoonwentonanautomobiletrip withhishostthroughthehillsof Carroll.Hiseveningwasspentmuch thesameashiseveningsinthecity, inreading,instudy,andinachat withmembersoftheShriverfamily. AstheCardinallookeddownyesterdayuponhislonelife,herepeatedhisontimismintheworldabout himandviewedwithceeidencethe future.
Forabriefmomentinconversationhetouchedupontheawakening ofhisfellow-countrymenonpoliticalconditions,expressinghisbelief thatthemenofto-dayareguidedin theexerciseoftheballotmoreby thevoice(4whatisconducivetothe country'sinterestthanhasbeenthe caseinthepast.
"Ithink,"saidtheCardinal"that thegreatmassofvotersaremore intentuponprinciplesthantheyare uponmen.Theyarelearningto thinkforthemselves.Theyarebreakingawayfromthehabitofblindly followingleaders,nomatterwhere suchleaderswouldleadthem.They aremoreconcernedwithwhataman saysthanwithwhosaysit."
TheCardinaldiscussed,.too,the highcostofliving,andsaidthathe believedthatthereasonwhythe Peopleofyearsagolivedmorecheaplythandotheirchildrenofto-day wasbecauseofthefactthattheyhad notmanyoftheluxuriesenjoyedby thepeopleofto-day,andbecause, too,theyweremorethrifty.He said:

OnhisfirstvisittotheirhouseDe l'Epeemeetsthemintheabsenceof theirmother,notknowingtheyare deafanddumb.Onthereturnofthe motherhemingleshistears ith hers,and,fullofcompassion,determinestoreplaceFatherVanin.
Fromthatdayanewcareeropenedbeforehim-oneunknownand bristlingwithdifficulties-butnoobstaclewasabletoholdhimhack. Withdisinterestedandgenerousspiritandwithawillfullofenergy andperseverancewithunrelentingpatience,raredisinterestedness,sacrificeofhisfortune,etc.,henetout inhisnewfieldoflabour.

"Throughthecourtesyandkindness ofyourArchbishop,whoseabsence atanotherceremonythismorning weverymuchregret,Ihavebeen privilegedtowitnessinthecathedralamostsolemnandmostsacred functionwhichhasdeeplystirredmy heart-thatexhiliratingspectacleof almostFeetmenandwomenreceiving theBreadofLifeatthealtarrails. Itconveyedatwofoldimpression. uswhohavegrownoldhaveanincurablePropensitytocanonisethe Past,andarealwayscontrastingthe experiencesofchildhoodwiththe present.Wedeplorethedecadenceof thetimes,andsoforth,insteadof takingoffourcoatsandstriving, honestlyandstrenuously,tobetter thepresent.Wearepronetolook regretfullyandwistfullyontheyears thathaveflownby,and,perhaps, someofuslooktothefuturetorelieveusfromaworldofcareand incurablesickness.CardinalMoran wasnoneofthatsort.Hewasa manoftheage.Thebuoyancyof spiritwithinboundedlikethebuoyancyofhissteptoadvancewiththe times.Helovedtheageheloved theland,withalovethatseemedto increaseinwarmthaslifeleftthe decayingframeworkitneverwaned;itneverweakened.Hence,Ihold himbeforeyouastheembodiment ofeverythingatrueHibernianshould be-animatedbythequenchlesslove forGodandHolyFaithandforthe landinwhichhislotwascast.(Applause.)ThereisanothercharacteristicofthedeadCardinalthathas sometimesstruckme,anditisthis WesometimesmeetmenwhomCod hasgiftedintellectually,butwhose intellectseemstodryuptheregion oftheheart,whichseemstohea frozenzone.Ontheotherhand, thereareotherswhoseheartsareso expansivethattheyseemtorun awaywiththehead,andtoleave littlebrain-poweratall.Butin theCardinaltherewassuchadelicateadjustmentofparts,therewas suchabalanceofpowers,thatone hesitatestosaywhetherhisattractiveforcecamefromhisluminous mindorfromthemellowwarmthof hisgreatoldheart.(Applause.)

FAITHANDFATHERLAND. IwouldputbeforeyouthismornIncCardinalMoranasanidealHibernian.Heworkedallthroughhis lifeforthetwinobjectivesofyour society-faithandfatherland.Inmy opinion,Icandonothingmorepracticalthantopresenthimasthe idealweallshouldlookup,toand shouldtrytocopyinourlives.He felt.asyouandIfeel,thatfaithis everything,eveninthismaterialage --thatitisGod'sbestgift,thatit ismorethanbrainpowerorgood health.ortheamassingofriches. intheHouseovertheHomeRule Billwasafailure.Theverycleverly Plannedandexecuted"ambushing" tacticsoftheOppositionWhipshave alsofailed.Theywouldundoubtedly havesucceededbutforthevigilance oftheIrishMembers,whohaverecognisedallalongthatthestrength oftheGovernmentisthestrengthof HomeRule,andwhohavesubordinatedeverythingtothissupremeissue.Theyoccupiednomoretime thanwasnecessaryinspeecheson theHomeRuleBill,andtheyrefrainedfromcrowdingtheOrderPaper withquestions.Thispolicyhasbeen amplyjustifiedbyresults,andthat ithasthewhole-heartedapprovalof theIrishpeopletherecannotbeany doubt.ThePartywasnevermore united,andnevermoreefficient.No IrishleadereverpossessedtheconfidenceandtheaffectionofhispartinagreaterdegreethanMr.Redmond,andwithsuchaleaderand suchaparty,Irelandcanfacethe futurewithabsoluteconfidence.

AtthelastmeetingoftheProvisionalCommitteeitwasunanimously resolvedthatameetingofthedelegatesfromalltheparishesofthe MelbourneArchdiocesebeconvened intheCathedralHallonSunday, September8th,toformaDiocesan CouncilfortheArchdiocese.TheDiocesanCouncilsofBallarat,Bendigo, andSalewillbeformedatanearly date,afterwhichtheCentralCounciloftheFederationwillbebrought intoexistence.Thewholeofthemachineryoftheorganisationwillthen hecomplete.

Sir,-Nodoubtanumberofpeople havebeenwaitingforthepublication ofMr.O'Dea'sreportoftheabove outragewithsomelittleinterest.some wentsofarastoanticipatetheresult ofhisinvestigation;forthiswehadgood reasonbecausewhenhererecentlythe Irishenvoys-menhighintheranksof HibernianSociety-openlydeniedthe accuracyoftiguresrelatingtoUlster's contributiontothetaxesofIrelandfigureswhichweretakenfromtheofficialrecordsandpublishedinthe"Irish Times."Andnowoutherewearetold, bythesameauthoritythattheinformationthatwereceivedbycablewas"one oftheusualfalsehoodscabledoutto Australia,"etc.Toallowthistogo unchallengedwouldbeaseriousreflectionupontheverityofourpressmessages,anduponthenationtowhichwe belong.Inshort,itwouldhavepeople wlievethatallthemessagesnothaving agoodwordforIrelandanditspeople particularlyonesectionofitspeople, arefalse.
Therefore,infairnesstothosewhoare preparedstilltobelievethatthereisa measureofhonouryetleftinthings Ishallbegladifyouwillrepublishfrom theLondon"Times"theenclosedletter, writtenbytheRev.RobertBarron, Presbyterianminister,whowasanactual witnessofthedisturbanceandthetone ofwhoseremarksisinstrikingcontrast tothepolitical,ifnotsectarian,prejudicedisplayedinMr.Devlin'sepistle, Perusaloftheevidencesofarasitis availabletousinAustraliaamplyconvincesonethattherewaseveryjustificationforthecabledversionoftheout rage.Onethingseemsclearfromthe evidenceofthevarious,witnesses,and thatisthattheHibernian);weretheaggressors.andthattheUnionJackwas theprincipalobjectoftheirattack.Yours,etc.

"Themagisterialinvestigationinto chargesofriotatCastledawsononJune 29th,hasbeenconcludedatMagherafelt. "ConstableM'Hughstatedthatthe Unionistsbeganthestme-throwing. ConstableBurnssaidthatafterthe troublebeganbothsidesseemedeager forthefight.Heheardtwoshots.
LocalUnionists,armedwithgrains, shovels,shafts,etc.,engagedtheHibernians.ConstableMolloysaidtheflags carriedbytheSundaySchoolparty werebroughtdown.
ReplyingtoMr.Lane(prosecuting), ConstableM'Huglistatedthatonthe morningofJune20th.hewentinthe companyofConstableCunningham,to MagherawiththeCastledawsonA.O.H. band.TheyreturnedtoCastledawsonat 5.30.Thewholeprocessionmarching fromthestationtothetownnumbered about200.Whentheygotsofarasthe policebarreks,witnesssawanotherprocessioncominguptheroad,andherequestedsomeoftheHiberniancrowd toturnupanotherstreet.Thisthey refusedtodo.buttheytoldhimthere wouldnotbe"aword."Eachofthe processionstooktheleftsideoftheroad. Whentheyhadpartlypassedheheard ashout,andonlookinground,sawboth partiesfighting.
Mr.Laneaskedwhichsidebeganthe stonethrowing,lintMr.Brown,forthe
Unionistdefendants,objectedtothe constableanswering. Witnesssaidthatfromthefirstthe stoneswerethrownbytheUnionist party,andthenbothpartiestookpart intimestone-throwing. 'limeUnionist party:Ladtakenuppitchforksandalto-
handlesandotherthingsexhibit outsideashop.aleheardatleasttwo shotsfiredontimeroadleadingtotime railwaystation.
Evidencewasgivenonbehalfofthe accusedtotheeffectthattherowwas causedthroughamemberoftheSabbathSchoolexcursionpartywavinga flagovertheheadsoftheHibermans andthattheexcursionpartymadeuse ofoffensiveexpressions.
Oneofthedefendants,whowasill, wasdischarged.Thestipendiarymagistratesaidthatthecourtwasofopinionthattherewasnotsufficientevidence tojustifyfourothersoftimeaccusedbeingsentforwardfortrial.'Iheremaining23werereturnedfortrialattime nextDerryAssizes,bailbeingaccepted fortheirappearance.

Theygofurther,andsayastrike wouldmeanruinationtothecommunityatlarge.Therearehutfew minesnowpayingtherichdividends offormeryears.Manyarepaying littleoverworkingexpenses.They areoffargreaterinteresttothe Peoplethantotheproprietors.And toclosedownthesebyageneral strikewouldmean'inmanyinstances theirtotalcessationascentresof employment.Asforthecapitalists whoownthefewrichmines,nomatter howlongthestrikemightlastthey canaffordtodowithouttheirdividends,whereastheworkingmancannotdowithouthiswages.Soitis bettertoletfairlywellatone thantocourtdisasterbyastrike.
