HowaCatholicSquire ReceivedRoyalty TherecentvisitofKingGeorgeto Weymouth,which,ashisMajesty wasremindedintheaddressofthe Corporation,wasthefavouriteseasideresortofhisgreatgrandfather, GeorgeIII.,revivesinterestingmemoriesoftherelationsofthelatter monarchwiththethenheadofthe famousoldCatholichouseofWeld ofLulworth,inDorsetshire.When GeorgeIII.wasfrequentingWeymouth(saystheGlasgow"Observer"),thequestionoftherelaxation ofthepenallawsagainstCatholics ("emancipation,''inthefullsense, wasstillundreamtof)wasmuchin theair,andtheKingwasadvised thatitwouldhepoliticanddesirableforhimtopaysomeattention totheSquireofLulworthasoneof themostresipectedandinfluential ofhisCatholicsubjects.KingGeorge accordinglydroveoverfromWeymouthtoLulworthCastle,andwas receivedwithcordialloyaltybyMr. Weld,whosechildren(includingthe futureCardinalandthegrandfather ofthepresentSquire)weregathered enthehall,andsang"GodSave theKing"ashisMajestyentered. ThereareCanadaandSouthAfrica totakeonlytwosignificantinstances.Thereyouhaveseparatenationsinsofarasanyofthediscriminatingtestswhichverifynationalitiescanbeapplied--separate nationswhich,bythegrantofthe Principleoflocalautonomy,have beenenablednotonlytoliveincontentment,andpeace,andco-operation,sidebysidewithoneanother, hutenemieshavebecomefriendsand supportersandthemostdevotedand loyaladherentsoftheEmpire.Of course,itisperfectlytruethatyou cannotapplypreciseprecedentson ourtreatmentofourself-governing dominionstothecaseofIrelandandforveryobviousreasons. Welivehereclosetogether,separa-
tedonlybyafewmilesofsea,Lied joinedbyaninvisiblenet-workof ties.Tiesofbusinessandofsocial relations,tieswhichnomancan break,andnomancandefine,make ourrelationstooneanotherdifferentinkindanddifferentindegree fromthoseperhapsofanyothercomponentpartoftheEmpire.Itisnot,* statesmanship,itisnotwise,torefusetorecognisethisdifferencewhen wearemoulding,aswearemouldinginthisBill,thesamegreatprincipleswhichwehaveappliedthroughoutthelengthandbreadthofour self-governingEmpireinorderto meetthespecialcircumstancesand thelocalexigenciesoftheparticular case.Gentlemen,Iputyouthis question.ProvidedIrelandgets,as bythisBillshedoes,localattonoIlly,andretainsherrepresencatires intheImperialParliament,what derogationisdoneeventothemost extremeconceptionoftheideaof Irishnationality?(Hear,hear.)They talkabouttheVeto,andtheyare alwaysdanglingitbeforeyoureyes asakindofterriblespectreorbogey.Gentlemen,Iamnotinthe leastafraidoftheVeio.(Cheers.) preferentialtreatmentontheassumption,andonlyupontheassumption,thattheIrishParliament woulddowrongandinjustice,andbe guiltyofreligiousandcivilandpoliticaloppression.("Never.")That wastheirassumption-bearthatin mind.Fourcountiesweretobeexcludeduponthatassumption,and therestofUlsterandthepoorscatteredminoritythroughouttheother Provinces,weretobethrowntothe wolves.(Loud-Cheers.)Ofcourse,I neednottellyoutherewasnosincerityinthis.(Laughter.)If,rehad offeredtheminthecourseofthedebatetoexcludethewholeofUlster fromtheschemetheytoldusquite franklytheiroppositiontoitwould notbeonewhitmodified.Itwasa meretheatrical,strategicalmanoeuvrewhichtookinnobody,and,least ofall,thosewhowereengagedinit. HowcanweCatholics,Iask,fold ourarmsorshutoureyesandsay thisquestionconcernsusnot?Ttdoes concernusitmustconcernus.If thereisunrestto-dayitisbecause so-calledteachersofht.manityare falsetothegreattruthsofGod.Distrustanddiscontentandafalse doctrineofmoralshavedrivenout .ofthe.heartsofthepeoplepeaceand thewisdomofGodand;,hesecular pressandtheteacherfromhischair inthesecularcollegehaveco-operatedinbringingaboutthislamentableconditionofthings.
Becauseoftheseinfluencesatwork theliteratureofourdayisfullof Poison-fulloffalseprinciples.Never irethehistoryofChristianityhasthe evilonesownsomanytaresamong thewheatoftruth.Notalonein things.offaith,whichdirectlyconcernthesoul,hutingovernmenteconomics,sociallife-ineveryphaseof humanactivitythispoisonhasenteredandvitiatedlifeandwithered anddestroyedaswithakillingfrost itscrowningfruitage.
Buthow,youask,shallweCatholicsmeetthissadconditionof things?Itmustbemetasevery moralevilismet,withtheswordof God'-truth,andthismustbewieldedearlyintheCatholicschool.The CatholicChurchwillbetheChurch ofthiscountryifweseetoitthat thefaithofourchildrenissafeguardedintheirearlyschooldays. Letprovisionthenbemadeineveryschoolforagoodlycollectionof Catholicbooks-inhistory,infiction, inpoetry,incriticism,inartand letourinterestinthisbeatall timesgreaterthanourinterestin commencementdisplays.Norneedwe limitourhookstoCatholicauthors alone.Manynon-Catholicauthors inspiredbyCatholictruthhavelavishlypouredoutforusthewealth oftheirmindsinliterarystreams clearandsweetandstrong.Butmy pusposeistopleadforaworthyrecognitionofwe-Catholicwritersin ourCatholicschools,thatourCatholicchildrenmaynotgrowupignorantof,thegreatCatholictruths thathaveinspiredtheSinger,the Builder,andtheDoer.
Iseenoreason,too,whyinour Catholicschoolsweshouldnothold totheoldideaofavardineprizes tothosewhoexcelintheirstudies. Itwouldproveanexcellentmeans ofpresentingtothebrightestofour Catholicboysandgirlscopiesofour bestCatholicworks,sothatinstimulatingCatholiceducationwewould therebyalsobestimulatingCatholic literature.
Youmayreplyto.allthisandsay Catholicliteraryworkofourdayis mediocre.Well,myanswertothis mustbeinthewordsoftheFrenchmanwho,whenanEnglishmanonce declaredthatLamartineisnota greatpoet,repliedwithprideand Patriotism:"Heisgreattous Frenchmen."SoweCatholicscan wellsay."Catholicliteratureat leastisgreattousCatholics,forit isanexpressionofCatholiclifeand Catholic'truth,eventhoughthe world-whichisoftenwronginits appraisements-crownsnotitsbrow. withlaurelbays."

Inthreeotherrathervitaldivisions-namely,onthesecondreading oftheWelshChurchBill,onthereductionoftheteaduty,andthesecondreadingoftheFranchiseBill,the Governmentmajoritieswithoutthe IrishNationalistswouldhavebeI, six,one,andsixrespectively.
TrulyJohnRedmondhastheLiberalsisthepalmofhishand;but JohnRedmondhaspatienceandforesightfor.thesakeofIrelandhe haswaitedandworkedyearafter year.AllhisdealingswiththeEnglishLiberalsandwiththeEnglish Labourmembershavebeenhonourableandpatriotic.Wesincerelytrust thathisconfidencehasnotbeenmisplacedlikethebraveSarsfield,he hassignedforhonourableterms,and likeSarstield,hekeepsthepledgeof Ireland'shonour.Butwehopethat historywillnotrepeatitselfinanotherofthebrokentreatiesthat havesooftendishonouredEngland's treatmentofIreland.
Mr.As'fifth'sproposalsareundoubtedlygood,hiswordsaredirect.andhisintentionshonest.As faraswecanjudge,heisthoroughly andwhole-heartedlysincereinhis effortstodofulljusticetoIreland. Irelandhasnotreceivedanything likejusticefromEneland;MrGladstonewasconvincedofthis;hetried tofullyemancipateIrelandandthus tojustifyEnzland,buthefailed,not throughwantofsincerity,intelligence,orhonestyofpurposeonhis part.butthroughthecombinedignoranceandprejudiceoftheEnglishpeople.Gladstonewasamanof acentury,astatesmanofthefirst rank.superiortotheordinaryEnglishmanofhisday.Twentyyears havepassedsincehisnobleeffortsto "mendEngland'sbrokenarm,"aid throughEngland'sgreatandgrievousfault,thebrokenarmisstillin thesling,weakandpainfulasever. Andallthisbecausethemicrobesof ignoranceandthepoisonofprejudicehavebeenallowedtoliveand thriveinEnglishpolitics.TheLiberalsasatpresentconstitutedcannotthrowtheblameentirelyon others.WhydidtheLiberalsthemselvesturnadeafeartoIreland whentheyhadanoverwhelmingmajority?Weretheytryingtoforget ortocastasidethetraditionshandeddowntothembyGladstone? Weareafraidtheee-YeroetheLiberalsisonthewane,andalthough weadmireMr.Asevith'shonesty.sincerityanddetermination,wearesorrythathedidnotassertsternly anduncomoromisinel,hisIrishpolicybeforethepoliticalcloedsof
RUSKIN'STESTIMONYONDEVOTIONTOMARY.
