St.Patrickhadnotyetcompleted thefirstdecadeofhissixtyyears' ApostleshipinIreland,whenhearrivedatitsbase.Hehadalreadyaccomplishedmorethanwouldhavesatisfiedmanyanotherheaven-sent Apostle.ThevictoryoverDruids, chieftains,andtheHighKingat Tarahadnaturallybeenfollowedby successeverywhere,ashepreached theGospel,goingwestwards.He realised,eventhen,thathewould subjugatethewholeislandtoChrist, butthiswasasmallthingtohisardentspirit.HewouldhavetheIrish foreverfaithful.Ascendingtothe summitofCruachanAighheremainedtherefromShroveTuesdayuntil HolySaturday,exposedtoallthe elements,withoutfoodordrink, wrestlinginprayerwithGod.
Allthatheaccomplishedafterwards,andallthathisfaithfulIrish havebeensince,athomeandabroad (anditistoowellknownaroundthe firesidesofErin,andthroughthe hiehwaysofeveryContinent,andin theislandsofeveryocean,tobear repetitionhere)waswonbyhimand revealedtohimereheobeyedthe angel'soft-repeatedcommand,"Get theegonefromthismount."

Penance-thatis,sincerepenancewillwashawaysininanyplaceand atanytime,buttheCatholicidea ofapilgrimageis,thatthethoughts evolvedbythememoriesawakened incertainplaces,andthegracesobtainedthroughtheintercessionof thesaintsheneuredbyvisitingthese Places,aremorelikelytoexciteto trrepenancethanthesameprayers andmortificationspractisedelsewhere.

anIndulgenceoftwoyearsandtwo quarantines"tothosepenitentswho visitandgivealmsfortherepairof theChapelofSt.Patrickonthe mountaincalledCroaghpatrick,whitherresortsagreatmultitudeof PersonstovenerateSt.Patrickthe SundaybeforetheFeastofSt.Peter'sChains."
Colgan,writingthreehundredyears ago,saysthatthemountainwas constantlyvisitedbypiouspilgrimagesfrommanypartsofthekingdom,andmanymiracleswerewrought there. ThegreatPilgrimagehascontinuedeversince.Thebitterpersecution oftheFaithforthreecenturiesleft fewchurchesonthelowgrounds; littlewonder,then,ifthelittle churchonCroaghpatrickfellinto ruins.ButtheFaithlivedoninthe heartsofthepeople,andthegreat Pilgrimageneverstopped. When brighterdayscame,andBishops andpriestsandpeoplecouldavail ofthestintedreligiouslibertygranted,theybuiltforthemselveschurcheswherethepeoplemostneeded them.
ThenthepresentArchbishopof Tuam,MostRev.Dr.Healy,cueof ourmostlearnedantiquarians,cne ofourmostreliableliistafians,and. ashiswritingsprove,meofour mostardentloversanddevout clientsofSt.Patrick,re-aalltthe churchontheHolyMountain. Itwasdedicatedonthe-0thJuly,1905,inthepresenceofover 20,00opilgrims.Itistoosubstantiallybuiltfortheelementstodemolishitbutif-whichCodforbid -r'!thlesshandsoncemornanalan ascendancywhichwouldmakeita ruin,theFaithandthePi!giiirage_ wouldstilllivetoconnectitaith somefutureerawhenitwculdberebuiltagain.
Thisisevidencedbythethousands whoannuallymakethePilgrimage onthelastSundayofJune.From isseorito20,000assistatMassthat morningonthesummit-Pilgrims frome'erypartofIreland,from GreatBritain,fromtheUnitedStates,fromeveryEnglish-speakingcolony,andwemightalmostsayfrom everycountrythatdoesnotsPeak English.Lastyearalone,oncth July,priestscelebratedMassonthe HolyMountainwho,hadtheydare sothatdayintheplacesfromBloch theycametomakethePilgrimage, wouldhavethemselvesalmost2iterallyfulfilledtheprophecythatform therisingofthesuntothesetting thereoftheclean(Malianshoaddbe offered.

Theireffortshavenotbeensuccessful,thoughtheyhadeverything intheirfavourexceptajustcause. Catholicsdonotnumberafourth ofthepopulationofVictoria.If theotherthree-fourthsbelievedthat thecausewas.just,surelywithin fortyyearstheywouldhavesecured itssuccess.Butthegreatbodyof thepeople,muchastheydesireadequatereligious,instructionfortheir children,andoftenastheyhadbeen vehementlyappealedto,didnotbelievethatreligiousinstructioncould hesafelygiveninschoolswhereboth pupilsandteachersareofevery varietyofreligiouspersuasion. (Hear,hear,andapplause.)They knewthatifthereligiousinstruction becolourlessitwouldbepractically uselessforall.Butifitbedefinite andadequatefor,some,itmustbe dangerous forothers.(Hear, hear.)Todisarmtheoppositionof Parentsandlegislatorsitisnowthe voguetorefereuphemisticallyto "simpleunseetarianScripturelessons."Butthepublicmustnotbe beguiledbyamisleadingphrase. TheymustInquirehowandbywhom theselessonsaretohetaught.It willthenappearthattheyareto betaught"like,anyotherlesson," accordingtotheknowledgeandbeliefoftheteacher.Theyaretobe taughtbyProtestantteachersto Catholicchildren,andby.'atholic teacherstoProtestantchildren.
TakeupanychapteroftheNew Testament,andyouwillfindthatit wouldbeimpossibleforanyteacher toexplainitwithoutrevealingto thechildrenhisownreligiousbeliefs.
Norcananyconscienceclausepreventthesedangersfromarising.Indeed,itistheboastoftheeatrons ofthisexperimentthatinother Stateswhereithasbeentriedthe conscienceclauseisinoperative.Not onechildinahundredwouldhave themoralcouragetofacetheimpliedrefectiononthetea-her,and theresentmentofcompanions,by withdrawingwhenthehourforreligiousinstructionarrives.

Thereisreallyonlyoneobjection tosuchaformofreferendum.Itis anobjectionwhichhasbeenvoiced lately,bothexplicitlyandimplicitly,bymenfromwhommoreselfrespect,enlightenment,broad-mindedness,andChristiancharitymighthe expected.Theobjectionisthat suchareferendummightrelieveCatholicparentsfrompayingadouble schooltax,andbenefitCatholic schools..Buttheotherproposed formofreferendumaimsatcompellingCatholicparents,afterbuilding andmaintainingtheirownschools, PayingproratafortheseculareducationofProtestantchildren,saving theStatethecostoftheeducation ofnearlyfortythousandCatholic children,inadditiontocontriblite towardsthereligiousinstructionof ProtestantchildreninStateschools. Mr.Broun,replying,expressedhis greatpleasureatbeingpresentto welcomeMr.Redmond.HehadalwaysadmiredthespiritoftheIrish Peopleintheirstruggleforlerislativeindependence,andbebelieved thateveryfreebornAustralianwould helpthemtoattaintheirobject. Theleaderandsub-leaderinarecentissueofthe"Record,"prefaced bytheextractfromtheannualreportofDr.Hope,fitlycontinuedthe campaignagainstperniciousliterature. InIrelandstringentandeffective meanshavebeenadoptedtocheck theevil,andintheEast,astheoutcomeofpopularmeetings,similar measuresarebeingtaken.Thetime hasnowarrivedinthisStateforthe adoptionofsimilarpracticalproceedings;fartheabusescomplained ofarein,nowiselessherethanelsewhere.Meanwhilemuchcanbedone byindividualeffort.Ithasbeen foundatleastinthecountrythat properrepresentationsandprotests haveinducedshopkeepersinmany placestowithdrawfromsaleindecentPicturesandimpurebooks.Peopleinrepresentativepositionsshould concernthemselvesandtendertheir adviceandprotestinthemetropolitanshopsparticularly.Noreading byyoungpeopleshouldbepermitted withoutpropersupervision,andno bookstakenatthecirculatinglibrarieswithoutcompetentopinionas totheirproprietyandfitness.We areawarethatthelibrariansof Pertharenotonlycapableofgiving soundexpertadvice,butthatthey areanxiousthatnosubscribersreceiveunsuitableorundesirableliterature.Themassofsoundandentertainingliteratureisenormous,and thereisnooccasionforthemostomniverousreadertobuyorthemost pushingsalesmantosellbooksor Papersofquestionablemorality.The Principalmagazinesusuallycontain lathingthatisveryobjectionable, andhighclasspublishersseldom transgressbyissuingimpureliterature.BurnsandOates,Washbourne. ThedelayinthepublicationofSir RogerCasementsreport(saysthe "(.'atholicTimes")isduetothefact thatSirEdwardGreyhasbeenin communicationwiththeUnitedStatesGovernmenttotheendthatpressuremightbebroughttobearon Peruforthesuppressionoftheevil. ThePeruvianGorernmentisaccused ofcallousnessbysomeofthejournalsofthiscountry.ItisnotindifferenttothesufferingortheIndians, butitis,asarule,slowtomove, andthedisputeastotheownership ofthePutumayoterritoryhashelpedtomakeityieldallthemoreto thispropensity.Butithasdone something,andwearesureitwill doagreatdealmoreundertheimpellingjointinfluenceofGreatBritainandtheUnitedStates.Two measuresitmustadopt.Inthefirst Placeitmestuseastronshandwith therubberfiendswhohaveacquired sucharecordbyactsofalmostunparalleledbrutality.Inthesecond Place,itmustreplacetheinhuman monsterswhohavebeenguiltyofthe fearfulcrimesdescribedinthereport byagentsofChristiancivilisation. Duringtheeveningthemembersof theLadies'Societystagedanamusingcomedy,entitled"Maxim'sMatrimonialMart."Thiswasthoroughlyenjoyedbyallpresent,andgreat creditisduetothe,wayeachmemberplayedherpart.Songswere renderedbyMissBrown'andMrRobinson,andMissGladysHenry,"the Highgatefavourite,"dancedthe Irishjigandthesailor'shornpipe. Dancingwasindulgedinluringthe eveningbythevisitors,andadelightfulsupper'wasservedbytheladies.Everybodyleftthehallwith theverdict-"Thattheyhadspentan enjoyableevening."Greatcreditisdue tothemembersoftheladies'society forthemannerinwhichtheevening'sentertainmentwascarriedout. York LastweekMr.Gladman_InsPector ofSchools,paidavisittoYork, andexaminedthepupilsattending theConventSchools.Heexpressed himselfasverypleasedwiththe alterationsand;improvementsthat hadbeeneffectedintheschoolroom sincetheoccasionofhislastvisit, andfeltsureitwouldhelptheSistersconsiderablyinthedischargeof theirdutiestothechildren.Inexaminingthechildrenhewasexact andpainstaking,andatthesame timebyhiskindlymannerandpleasingdispositionheremovedanynervouenessthatmightbeahindrance tothechildreningivingtheiranswers.
HisreportwasVeryfavourableindeed,anditisveryencouragingto theSisterstoknowthattheyhave illyearnestandperseveringworkraisedtheschoolfromthechaoticconditioninwhichtheyfoundittoits presentstateofthoroughefficiency.
