Thegirlwholeftschool"forgood" maynot,sofar,havefeltthatthe changeinherlifehasmadeany greatdifferenceinher.Holidays happeneveryyear,andshehasspent themmuchasusual.Butnowthat theyoungerchildrenhavereturned tolessons,andthefamilyhavesettleddowntowork,shewillvery likelywonderwhatonearthsheis todowithherimportantseventeen oreighteenyearoldself.

EnterprisinglittleBelgium,long celebratedforitsthrift,hasevolved anewschemebywhichthisnational virtueistobelinkedtothepursuit ofliterature.AStateLiberary,to beginat10,000volumes,isbeing setupinBrussels,andthosewho havemoneyintheSavingsBanks areentitledtoborrowfromitany booktheylikeuponcheckingapennyofftheirsavingsbankbooksat thenearestpostoffice.Thevolume borrowedwillbesentfreebypost, andmaybekeptforafortnight, whiletheusualguaranteeisprovidedbytheborrower'sdeposit.As Belgiumnumberssome1,500post offices,thisscheme(saysthe"UniversityCorrespondent")willvirtuallycreateacirculatinglibraryof 1,500branches.

"Thehard,practicalnaturecithe Ulsterman,sousefulasithasbeen inbuildingtiptheprosperityofthe province,has?initsomethingnarrow.Itisoneofthepenaltiesofthe puritanicalcharacter,richlyasthis hasinfluencedImperialhistory,that itisinadegreeintolerant.Ulster canseenowrongininsistingthat one-fifthoftheinhabitantsofIrelandshoulddictatetheformofgovernmentfortheislandbutitcries forarmstoresistgovernnentby four-fifthsofthereople.Thebetter sense,andtheclearervisionofthe smallminorityinIreland Isave themfromthelaststep,whichwould beworsethanfolly.Asirresistible asthedecreesoftheMedesandPersians.thefiatofthepresentLiberal GovernmentinEnglandbasgone forththattheTrishpeopleshallgo,vernIreland.InUlsterthereismad talkofsettingupaprovisionalGovernment,whichshallmakelawsfor thediscontentedprovinceandshall ignoretheParliamentatDublin.The EnglishandIrishVnionistleaders, who,bythevehemenceoftheirspeechesagainsttheBillprovokethese declarations,areguiltyofastupendouscrimeagainsttheBritishpeople."

TEMPTATIONS.

Thewaysomepersonsact,andthe waytheyspeak,tootheytryto provetousthatattimesitIsimpossibletoovercometemptations. Thatwemustfollowourimpulses, andcannotovercomeoverpowering temptations.Eachlife,hasitsown besettingtemptations,itsown shareoftrial!;,andismenacedsomewherebydanger.Strengthisgot throughallthisstrain.Thatisthe naturalenvironmentforgrowthin grace,andvirtue.Itisthecommon humanexperienceforthetrainingof character,forthemakingofpure manhoodandwomanhood.Hewho isnottriedandhasnothing,toovercomecannotbeasoldier.Andthere isnotonewhoisexemptfromthis battle,whethermanorwoman.To refusetose..themoralsignificance istoemptylifeofanymeaningat all.lintwhenwehaveaglimmeringofthegreatandinspiring thoughthatthisisthewillofGod forus,evenoursanctification,and wemanfullytrytoovercomeourselves,webegintoseehowitmusthe, thatGodisfaithful.Hewillnotsufferustobetemptedaboveorbeyondourpowers,butwillwiththe temptationalsomakeawayofescapethatwemayheabletobearit. Thetroublewiththosewhosaythey Cannotovercometemptationisthey donotwanttoovercomeit.Intheir heartstheyhaveasneakinglovefor thefault,andtakepleasureinit, andthereforetheyareneverableto riseaboveitandovercomethemselves.

ThefairestminesofOphiryielded theirpurestgold,andtheseagave upitspearlsandtreasures;thelabourofmanyhandswasungrudginglygiven,andthegenerosityof thepeoplewasunstinted.Whenthat greatworkwasfinishedGodAlmightytoldSolomonthatHisheart wouldbetherealwaysandhowpleasedItswaswiththeworkthathad beendone.Thatlittlechurchat Armadale,unpretentiousbrickstructurethoughitmightbe,mustbeas deartoGodasSolomon'stemple was,foritwastobethechannel throughwhichHispeoplewereto approachHim,toassistattheHoly SacrificeoftheMass,tohearthe savingwordofGod,tobenourished bytheHolySacraments.Thatwasan occasiononwhichtheymustallrejoice,anoccasionthatwouldgladden thesacredheartofChristandgladdentheheartsoftheCatholicsin thedistrictandallaround.Hewas delightedtoseefromthenumberpresentthatafternoonthatnotonly theCatholicheartofArmadale,but theCatholicheartofPerthalso,had beenstirredbythefunctionofbuildingachurchinwhathehopedwould becomeinthenearfutureoneofthe mostfashionablesuburbstothehonourofthelivingGod.Hetookit thattheyhadnotonlyattendedthe ceremonytoshowtheirsympathyin thework,hutalsotogiveittheir Practicalaid.Hecommendedtheeffortthatwasbeingmadetothegenerosityandcharityofall.Theirassistancemightonlyhesmall,butif theywereunitedtheywouldhavea sumofmoneythatwouldheworthyofArmadaleandworthyofthe CatholicChurch.Onlyapartofthe building,wastobeerectednew,but theplansforthecompletestructure werecomprehensive,andwhenfinisheditwouldbesufficienttocopewith theexpansionofthedistrictwhich theyhadsomuchreasontobelieve wouldfollow.Theywereprivileged tohavewiththemthatefternoon Mr.W.Redmond,thedistinguished envoyfromthehomeland.Hecame asanexponentofwhatmightbe calledthepoliticaldestinyofirelandandthatafternoonhewasglad thatMr.RedmondhadtheoPPortunityofwitnessingsomethingofthe spiritualdestinyoftheircountry whichwasifanythinggreaterand noblerandmoreenduring. He (BishopClyne)thankedFatherBrennanfortheveryenergeticworkhe haddoneduringthefewshort monthsofhispastorate.Hethanked thearchitect,Mr.Dennehy,andthe contractor,Mr.Popham,andhealso expressedhisgratitudetothemembersofthechoirwhohadattended tohenintheceremonywiththeir hymnsandsacredcanticles.Hewas furtherindebtedtothepeopleof Armadalefortheearnestnesswhich theyhadshowninconnectionwith theproject,andforthegenerous supportwhichtheyhadextendedto it.

Whentheceremoniesconnectedwith theblessingandlayingofthestone werecomplete,HisLordshipdeliveredaveryimpressiveaddress.Many ofthem,saidtheBishop,hadbeen lookingforwardwithgreatinterest andnotalittleanxietyforaconsiderabletimepasttotheceremony ofblessingandlayingthefoundation stoneofthenewchurchthatwas beingerectedatArmadaleforthe gloryofGod,andinhonourofthe greatpatronsaintofAustralasia, St.FrancisXavier.Theprojectof buildingthatchurchhadbeenvery dearnotonlytothedevotedband ofCatholicswholivedatArmadale, butalsotohimselfastheBishop andtotheFriedwhohadbeenentrustedwiththespiritualcareof thatlargedistrict(FatherBrennan). He(theBishop)mustconfessthat whenhefirstwenttoArmadaleand metthehandfulofCatholicsthere hewasnotverysanguinethatwithinsuchashortspaceoftimea churchwouldbeerected.Theywere veryfewinnumbers,buttheyhad goldenandwarmhearts,andthey hadsetabouttheworkofbuilding thechurchwithanenergywhichfor anexamplehecouldcommendtothe Catholicsinallotherpartsofthe diocese.Withinashorttimethey hadcollectednotmuchlessthan E2(),andwiththatsuminhandhe asBishopfeltjustifiedinauthorising thenecessaryexpenditureof£741 fortheerectionof.thatchurchina districtwhichinthenearfuture Promisedtobeverypopulousand important.Thatmorninghehad attendedafunctionatMidlandJunction,andthosepresentincludedthe MinisterforWorks(Mr.W.D.Johnson).HehadaskedtheMinisterif hecouldgivehimanyCabinetsecretswhichhecoulduseatIkrmadalethatafternoontostirupthe generosityofthepeople,andMr. Johnsonhadbadehimsaythis much,thattheGovernmentsurveyorshadfoundconsiderabledifficulty inconnectionwiththeArmadale route,butUPtothepresentthey hadnotfoundanyotherpractical routeforthetrans-Australianrailway.Althoughitwasnotofavery definitecharacter,hethoughtthat thatannouncementshouldfillthe heartsofthepeopleofthedistrict withhopeandconfidencethatinthe neai1futuretheirswouldbea+mostimportantcentre.Butapartfromthat considerationtheywereerectingthere abuildingthatwouldhededicated exclusivelytotheworshipofAlmiehtyGod.Theywereallanxiousto buildandequiphomesforthemselvesandhomesfortheirfamilies; andwasitnottherightinstinct, theChristianinstinct,thattheyas ChristianpeopleshouldhareasimilaranxietytobuildandeluiP,adorn andembellishahomeforGodAlmightyforChristtheirLordand ths'reevfourwhereinHemightdwell andWhereinholysacrificesmighthe offeredinHisHonour? Secondlytheoccasionwashistoricbecauseithadbeengracedby thepresenceoftheyouthfuland talentedMr.Redmond-aworthyson ofaworthyfather,andatruerepresentativeandexponentofthe causeofdemocracy,thatcause thatwouldbealwaysdeartothe heart,ofourholymothertheCatholicChurch.

Andthirdly,hehopedthatall whowerepresentthateveningwould havethesatisfactionofremembering thattheyassistedatthelayingof thefoundationstoneofthefirst (lurchbuiltontherouteofthe TranscontinentalRailway.

Inmakingafinancialstatement, Fr.Brennansaidthatthecontract PricefortheChurch(abrickbuildingerefeetby26feet),was£74u, whichwitharchitect'sfeesandother minorexpenses,wouldreachabout £800.£Toebadbeenhandedover tohimbyFatherFaganandDean O'Reilly,whohadchargeofthedistrictbeforehisappointment.The siteoftheChurchalso,whichcost En,waspurchasedandpaidfor duringFr.Fagan'stime. Nearly £nshadbeencollectedsince,and hehadeveryconfidencethatthe Pocketsaswellastheheartsof thosewholistenedtotheBishop's eloquentaddresswerestirredtotheir verydepthsandthat,asaconsequence,aconsiderablesumwouldhe handedinbythevariouscollectors thatafternoon.

Thisconcludedtheproceedings,and whenthebookswerehandedin,it wasfoundthatthecollectionreachedtheerrandtotalof£8oinactual donations,andover£10inpromises.

TheVeryRev.FatherVerling, who,responded,saidinthefirstplace hehadtothanktheNationalPresidentforthekindlytermsinwhich hehad(spokenofHisLordshipthe BishopandtheClergy,andhealso desiredtoexpresshisappreciationof themannerinwhichthetoastwas received.Heknewthatthenameof HisLordshipwouldbereceivedwith theutmostcordiality,forhehad completelywonhiswayt')the heartsofthepeoplesincehehad takenchargeoftheSeeofPerth. Thespaciousgroundsandbuild4 ingsoftheChristianBrothers'Collegeworeanairoffestivityonthe morningofMonday,the12thAugust,whentheIrishEnvoys,Messrs RedmondandDonovan,werereceived andwelcomed.Theterracetothe southoftheCollege,thespacious diningroomoftheboysandthe twoschoolroomsoccupyingaportionofthewingrecentlyerectedand whichareconnectedbyfoldingdoors topermitoftheirbeingthrowninto one,wereprofuseindisplayofbuntingandfloraldecorations.Amongst themanyguestswhohadassembled tojoininwelcomingthedelegates wereHisLordshipDr.Chine,the Attorney-General(Mr.T.Walker, M.L.A.),the'.SpeakeroftheLegislativeAssembly(Mr.M.F.Troy, M.L.A.),theHon.J.D.Connolly, M.L.C.,theHon.FrankConnor, M.L.C.,Mr.WalterDwyer,M.L.A., HisWorshiptheMayorofPerth, 'it Mrs.andMissMolloy,Mr.T.P. andtotheSceptic,butthemission ofthesemenwasaltogethertooinfamoustobesubmittedtothePeopleofthesecountries.Thanksto thepatience,energy,andeloquence oftheRedmondBrothers,andofthe subsequentEnvoys,theIrishquestionstoodto-dayoneofthemost mostreasonable,desirable,andjust thatcouldbesubmittedtoanAustralianaudience.ThepresentEnvoyshadthepleasureandsatisfactionofseeingtheirplatformshonouredbythepresenceoftheleading Politicians,thePremiersofthevariousStates,andbyeventhatofthe PrimeMinisteroftheCommonwealth ofAustralia.Itgavehimpleasure toseetherethatdaytheMinister forEducation,theSpeakerofthe Legislative.Assembly,andtheMayor ofPerth.HesaidthattheChristianBrothers'Collegewasaselfsupportingpublicschool.Itspupils wererecruitednotonlyfromboys oftheirownnationalityandreligion,butlargelyfromthesonsOf thosewhodifferedfromtheminboth theserespects.Hewillinglypaida warmtributetotheloyaltyand abilityofthesenon-Catholicboys. TheaimoftheChristianBrothersIn thematterofeducationwastotrain theyouthphysically,mentally,and morally.IncrickettheywerePremiersinTemand1911.Theyhave heldtheplaceofhonourinfootball forfiveyears.Theircrewshad beenattheheadoftheriverfor fouryears,duringwhichtimethey havealsocarriedofftheformprize. Ingeneralathleticstheywerechampionsforfouryears,producinginadditionthechampionathleteduringeach oftheseyears.Thestudentsofthe Collegehadwonnumerousscholarshipsof£15and£25each,oneof £225,fourof£150,aridthreeRhodes ScholarshipsofDes)each,while theyhadwonfirstplaceinSouth andWestAustraliainthedifferent gradesnofewerthantentimes.He mentionedthefactthatnearlyall theclerksintheRoyalMintwere pupilsoftheCollege,havingwon theirplacesbycompetitiveexaminations.(Loudapplause.)

DuringthefunctionBrotherNunanhandedMr.Redmondtwocheques,onefromthemastersand PupilsoftheCollege,andanotherfromthepupilsofSt.PatricksSchool,Wellington-street.BrotherNunansaidthatitwaswith prideandpleasurehewelcomedthe IrishEnvoys,who,notwithstanding theirmanyengagementsandlaborioustravels,didthemthehonour ofvisitingtheCollegethatday.He saidthathefeltitadityonhis ParttogivetheboysanopportunityofseeingandhearingtheEnvoys.HewelcomedthemastherePresentativesoftheIrishpeople.lie welcomedMr.RedmondasOneson oftheIrishLeader,andMr.Mewvanasanoldfriend.Theywerethe firstschooltowelcomehiminAustraliasevenyearsago,andnswthey werethelasttohidhimfarewell. HesaidthattheIrishinAustralia owedadebtofgratitudetotheEnvoyswhofromtimetotimecame alongtoplacetherealnatureof theIrishquestionbeforetheAustralianpeople,aquestionwhich badbeenmoremisrepresentedthan P.e*haPsanyother.Itwasnowle yearsagosincethearrivalofthe firstEnvoysinthepersonsofthe eresentIrishLeaderendhisbrother. thoseofthenewUniversity,which, seemingly,madenoprovisionfor arts,law,ormedicine?Whatwould becomeofthecultureabsolutelynecessaryforprofessionalmenifthey hadnoartsdegree?Weretheyto forcetheirstudentsintothescience curriculumofthenewUniversity againsttheirwills?Theonlywayhe sawoutofthedifficultywastoadheretotheoldstateofthingsand toadylsetheirstudentstocomplete theirstudiesinuniversitiesoutside theStatewheretheywouldhave chairssuitabletothestudiesof theirfutureprofessions.Sucha coursewouldnotbeverypatriotic, buttheycouldnotforcevocations ontheirstudents,andiftheywould notreceiveapropereducationin theirownStatetheymustseekitin foreignuniversities.

TheMinisterforEducation(Mr. T.Walker),whosubsequentlyaddressedthegathering,saidthathe desiredtomakeanexplanationregardingtheSenateoftheUniversity. FromtheremarksmadebyBrother Nunanitappearedthattherewas somemisunderstandingattobow thingsstood.Hecouldassurethem thattheSenatewasanindeeetelent body,andthe.Governmenthadno morepowertoframethepolicyfor themthanithadtodictatewhat shouldbedoneattheCollegein whichtheywerethenassembled.He agreedwiththeirprincipalthatit wasdesirablethatclassicsshould findaplaceinthecurriculumofthe University,buthewasinaminority,andhehadtobowtotheopinionofthemajorityofhiscolleagues ontheSenate.

BrotherNunanfurtherremarked thatastheIrishpeoplehadlongdesiredtohaveanIrishParliament, sothepeopleofthisStaterejoiced thatthedayhaddomewhenthey hadtheirownUniversity.Hisaudience,however,wouldhesurprisedto hearthatthemastersofthepublic schoolsofthisStateweremorethan disappointedattheshapeth'ergswere taking.They,inconjunctionwith the.AdelaideUniversityauthbrities, haddevelopedasystemofexaminationsverysuitabletotherequirementsofthestudentsoftheState. Thebellhasmanynewfeatures;it issoconstructedthatitcanbeturnedroundinthestock,withthe greatestfacility,thuspresentinga newplaceforthetonguetostrike, andconsequentlyprolongingthelife ofthehell.Anotherfeatureisthe easewithwhichevenachildcan rineit.Ithasadeeprichmusical tone,whichisreallythebestadvertisementforthefirmthatproduced it. Somemayaskwhyt*Envoysare collectingmoneynowthatHome Ruleisinsight.ThisquerywasablyansweredbyMr.Redmondinhis meetingatMidlandJunctionon Mondaynight,whenhepointedout thatwhiletheIrishPartyisa greatpartyrepresentingagreatpeople,theywereapoorparty,anda poorpeople.Andtheywereupagainstthegreatestcombinationof landlordism,plutocracy,andaristocracythathadeverexistedinany PortionoftheBritishEmpire.No Parliamentaryelectioncouldhe foughtinIrelandexceptbyawealthymanoramanbackedbyawealthyorganisation.Hewasthererepresentingaconstituencyinthevery heartofProtestantUlster,andwhetherhewonorlostthatseathehad topaytoagentlemancalledthereturningofficer-probablysocalledbecauseheneverreturnedanythingthesumof£35.0forfillingapositionwhichwasmerelyasinecure.

Mr.Redmondwasgreetedwith heartyapplause.Hestatedthatthe meetingwasafittingconclusionto 'theeffortsinWesternAustraliaof 'hemostsuccessfulIrishdelegation ThathadevervisitedAustralia.On behalfoftheIrishPartyhetendered thesincerestthanksofhimselfand 'Mr.DonovantotheIrishclergyand -laitythroughouttheState,andparticularlyDr.Clune,theBishopof Perth,forthemagnificentsupport whichtheyhadreceived.Theunfoundedprejudicesof30yearsago badbeensweptawaybythegreat waveofdemocraticthoughtwhich hadsweptovertheBritishEmpire andithadcomeatlasttoberealisedbytheBritishParliamentthat theverysalvationoftheEmpiredependedontheconciliationof theIrishpeople.InplaceofthearcementsagainstHomeRulethere hadcomenofresho'riectionbasedon soundlogic,butonlyheapsofabuse.

'TheonPonentsofHomeRuledesired toseeintheIrishConstitutionan arrogant,insultingprovisionthatthe IrishCatholicssheltienotpersecute 'heirProtestantcountrymen.He 'challengedthemthereandthenand hadchallengedtheopponentsof HomeRuleoneveryplatformthroughouttheContinent,tobringforwardonesingleinstanceinthepast historyofIrelandwheretheIrish Protestanthadbeenpersecutedherauseofhisbeliefs.Why,iftheyliked,theCatholicscoulddrivethe wholehanglotofIrishProtestants ',ntotbaAtlanticOcean.TheIrish PartyhadalwaysbeenaNational, androtasectarian,party,andthe ideaofpersecutionwasnotonlyuntanled.hutabsolutely,untenable, andfoetidnoPlaceinthemindof anysanepersonoftheereeentday.

Mr.Donovanwasgivenamostcordialreception.TheIrishParty,he stated,baseditsclaimtotheright ofself-governmentonanhistoric titletothatright,onthefactthat theIrishpeoplewerefar,fardifferententfromthosewhoruledthem, differentininstincts,ideals,language andcustoms.Thedisabilitiesunder whichIrelandhadsufferedsinceshe lostGrattan'sParliamenthaddepopulatedthecountrybyhalf,had strangledherindustries,ruinedher agriculture,andretardedherprogress.Asaresultofaniniquitous systemofgovernmentIrelandwas oneofthemostbackwardcountries intheEmpire,adisgracetoany nationwhichcalleditselfcivilised. HowlongwouldtheAustralianpeohaveremainedloyaltoasystem underwhichalabourerwaspaidat between7sandrosperweek?Loyaltywasthedirectoutcomeofliberty,andtheIrishpeoplewouldbe loyalassoonastheyhadeomething tobeloyalfor.TheIrishPartybad noquarrelwiththeKingorwith theBritishdemocracy-ithada quarrelwiththeoldgangwhichhad placedtheIrishpeopleintheunhappypositioninwhichtheywereatthe Presentday.Hehappenedtocome fromBelfast,andknewthegentlemenwhohadlatelybeenmakingthe seditiousandtreasonablespeeches whichhadstirreduprevoltinBelfast.SirEdwardCarson,whohad madefamousthecatchcry"Ulster willfightandUlsterwillberight," didnotrepresentanIrishconstituency,butwasreturnedtoParliamentbyafewrowdyTrinityCollege students,andwouldbefound,when itcametofighting,lookingthrough thewindowsofadrawing-room, watchinghismiserabledupesfightinginthestreets.Hewouldnot havethecouragetoletoffapenny popgun.(Laughter.)TheIrishpeoplehadhelpedtomaintaintheEmpireintimeofdifficultyanddanger, andwerethey,whohadfoughtat theTugelaRiverandSpionKop,to hedeniedtheself-governmentwhich theBoershaddemandedatthe pointofthebayonet.(Ironicalcries of"Yes.")Inconclusion,MrDonovan,inthenameoftheIrishParty, thankedthepeopleofAustralia,"a namewhichstoodforthefinestaid freestcountryintheworld."(ApPlause.)
