Butwithregardtothegeneralquestiontheyaddedarider,enjoining that"cautionbeexercisedintheintroductiontochurches,evenfordecorativeIpurposes,ofsculpturalrepresentationsofsacredpersonsor othersymbolswhichmaybedeemedtobespeciallyassociatedwith thecreatureworshiporothererrors oftheChurchofRome."Strangeto say,theselastwordsevokedavigorousprotestfromseveralministers;andinparticularfromthe Rev.Mr.Ireland,ofCoatibridge,who spokesostronglythathewasasked ifhewaspleadingindefenceofRomanCatholicism.Herepliedthat "whilehewasnotrepresentingthe RomanCatholicChurchinthe House,hewasnottheretobeasked toendorsemisrepresentationsofthat Church.The'bulwarksandprotectionsagainstcreatureworshipand idolatrywerefarmoreconspicuous intheRomanCatholicCatechism thaninthe(Presbyterian)Shorter Cathechism:andpersonallyhedid notthinkmuchofthoseforefathers oftheirswhobadgiventhemthe currentopinionsiofRomanCatholics."TheRev.Dr.GordonMurray, andProfessorCowan,bothofAberdeen(theirnamesdeservetoherecorded)alsoprotestedagainstthe words,sayingthat"neitherthe PopenortheGeneralCouncilshad definitelyassertedthattheyought toworshiptheVirgin,andthey shouldrefrainfromassociatingthe truedoctrineoftheRomanCatholic Churchwithcreatureworship.The objectionablewordsweretherefore deleted,andthephrasealteredsoas toread"speciallyassociatedwith doctrinesnotacceptedbythe ChurchofScotland."Thedesire hereshowntoavoidmisrepresentationofCatholicfaithandpracticeis oneofthemostpleesingfeaturesof thewholeaffair,andisasuresign ofgrowingenlightenmentandfairmindedness.

neverevincedanoverwhelmingdesireforageneralintellectualeducation.Ithas'preferredtotrainthe greatmassofitspeopleinmanners andmorals,andtoreserveitstreasuresofcultureforthemostpromisingpupils. Wefightagainstthe idea,snAmerica,thatthereisany inequalityinnaturalgifts,andwe trytogiveeverybodyaneven chance.Thisispraiseworthy,of course,butitisimpossible.Thetextureofmen'smindsdiffersmore thanthegrainofwoodintheforests.Asacorollarytoourdemocraticendeavoursinthisway,we cometotheconclusionthatonekind ofgift,onekindofsuccess,onekind ofachievement,isasgoodasany other.Butitisnot.Thereare hierarchiesoftalentsthereare somekindsofgeniussorarethat theyoutvaluealltherest.Wemust recognisethis,oroureducationwill beamuddle.Wemustrecognise, too,thattherearelimitationsto physicalandmaterialendeavourthatwecannotallberich,oreven comparativelywelloffandthatwe hadbesttrytolayuptreasuresof emotion,intellect,andspirit,whicli willendureandconsole."

Abrilliantlifeterminatedonthe 7thinst.,whenMr.JahnIgnatius Hunt("Flaneur"ofthe"Freeman" foroverageneration)diedathis residence,"Huntlea,"iiensingtonroad,SummerHill,attheageof65 Years.Somethirtyoddyearsago, thelateMr.Huntwasoneofthe smartestoperatorsintheTelegraph Department.Underthenameof "Venator,"forawhilehecontributedtotheBathurst"Sentinel."For overthirtyyearsheregularlycontributedtothe"Freeman'sJournal"as"TheFlaneur."Anativeof Bathurst,hewaseducatedbythat finestofIrishdominfies,thelateMichaelMullinsMcGirr.Horse-ridingattractedhiminhiisyoungerdays,and herodeinanumberofraces.Laterhe developedtheartisticspiritinmusicandliterature.Twenty-fiveyears agohepublished"Bonanzas,"a bookcontainingsomeofhisbest "Freeman"sketches,whichisnow outofprint.Mr.Hunthadbeenan invalidforpracticallythelast20 ears.Itisstatedthathistalents wereattheirbestwhenhewassufferingthemostacutepain.

TheseparationoftheChurchand StateinFrancewasfollowed,asour readersknow,bytheutterspoliationoftheChurch,towhichitdeniedtherighttopossesproperty (saysthespecialcorrespondentofthe London"CatholicTimes").Thegifts oflandsorhousesmadetoherin thepastwereunscrupulouslytaken fromherbytheGovernment,and herpriestswerethrownonthe chariteofthefaithful.Yetitisat themomentwhen,humanlyspeaking,sheisweakestandpoorest,that theChurchhasgainedgroundmost rapidly.Whatshehaslostintemporalpossessionssheseemstohave gainedinmoralinfluence.Asalready brieflystatedina"Noteofthe Week,"sincethebreakwithRome therehavebeenfounded,according toareportpresentedbyM.Goyau toameetinginl'arisoverwhich CardinalAmettepresided,ninenew parishesinthecapital,andfifteen justoutsidethecity.Besidesthese, twenty-fournew'religiouscentres, twenty-foursmallchapels-of-ease, havebeenbuilt,tenwithinandfourteenwithouttheboundariesofParis. Thememberstakethesimple!vows ofreligion.Nopersoncanbecome amemberunlessheberesolvedto observetheruleoftotalabstinence fromintoxicatingdrinkanddrugs. Unlessinurgentcasesofnecessity nomembercanbedispensedfrom thisrulebyamedicaldoctor,but ifgrantedatallthedispensation mustcomefromtheSuperior.
Themembersarechieflylaidout forpastoralorparochialwork,but theyshallbepreparedtoundertake anyotherkindofwork,such as teachinginschools,givingmissions, ortakingchargeofinstitutions,as theirsuperiorsmaydirect.
Itmayheinterestingtoknow thatEverinthehistoryoftheCongregationhasamemberdesireddispensationfromthispromise.
NopersonacquaintedwiththehistoryoftheChurchcanfora-nomeritdoubtthatGodhasraisedup thisCongregationatatimewhen thedmionofintemperanceisplayingstubhavoconhumansouls.
Thepolicecaurts,thedivorce courts,theprisons,theasylums,the workhouses,thehospitals-allspeak eloquentlyofthenecessityforthe latestcongre,ationspeciallydevotedtotheunrootingofthisdangerousweed,whichhasalmostchoked thegrowthofanation.Hereare
provethatdrink isnotanessentialelementofdaily life,andwho,forthesakeoftheir fellow-man,havegenerouslymade thisofferingasanactofatonement for'themanyexcessescommittedagainsttheDivineMajesty. SofartheCongregationhasonly onehouseinIreland.AtWaterford theFatherstakechargeoftheInebriateHome,whichhasbeenconfidedtothembytheGovernment.Their efforts.thereprovethatthereformationofadrunkardisnotalwaysthe hopelesstaskwhichsomeimagine. Withalargerhouseinamorecentralpositionanuntoldamountof goodmightbeperformed.
Somanyobstacleshavehadtobe overcomethattheoneplace(Ireland)wheremanyvocationscould hefoundhasbeenpracticallyneglected,andsomanypromisingmembershavebeenlostinthisway. However,wetakethisopportunity ofputtingbeforetheIrishpeople thisgreatwork,whichwillreapsuch anabundantharvestofsoulsin timestocome.Hereisawayof makingreparationforthesinsof thepoor,ofatoningtotheoutragedMajestyofGodforthecrimes thatunfortunatelyhavebeenonly toocommoninourlandhereisa Congregationwhichwilldoitspart onthebattle-fieldwithIntemperance,eachmemberguardedwiththe shieldandarms,defensiveandoffensive,ofthetotalabstinencepledge,eachconvincedofthenecessityof totalabstinence,andeachnotafraid tostandupasalivingexampleof thedoctrinewhichhepreachesand railsuponotherstoobey.

Genera,Gordon,onrisingtorespond,wasloudlyapplauded.He saidhewasrejoicedtoheartheremarksoftheMayorinregardtothe attitudeoftheNorthampeopletowardsthecadetmovement.Hehad tothanktheMayorandcouncillors forallthehaddoneinthewayof cateringforthecomfortoftheofficersandnon-commissionedofficers attendingthepresentschool.Thanks totheirefforts,thecamping-ground wasanexcellentone,andhehadno doubtwouldbefrequentlyavailedof bytheauthorities.Hehadalways feltthatthesuccessofthecadet movementdependedentirelyonhow itwasregardedbythepublic.Australiawaspioneeringagreatenterprise-itwasdoingsomethingthat noothercountryhadeverattempted.ThecontrastbetweentheAustraliansystemofcompulsorytrainingandtheContinentalsystemwas astrikingone.Underthesystemof conscriptionprevailingontheContinenttheboyafterleavingschool wasleftaloneuntilhewas21,and thencalleduponfortwoyears'cempulsoryservice.Attheageof21he hadusuallyacquiredadistastefor alldiscipline,andforlackoftraininginhisteenswasdeficientinphysicaldevelopment.Fewrealisedthe horrorwithwhichhundredsofyoung menontheContinentlookedforwardtotheir21stbirthday,andit wa-anindisputablefactthatmany wentsofarastowilfullymaim themselvesinordertoavoidservice. Thetwoyearsofservicemeanta cempletedisturbanceoftheyoung man'sciviloccupation,andduring thewholeofthattimehewasa burdenonthenation,producingnothing.TheAustraliansystemwas exactlytheopposite.The1,oywas takenat14yearsofage,justwhen hewasmostreadytolearn,most amenabletodiscipline,andinthe stsetestneedofsuchtraininsae weoldleadtocompletephysicaldevelupment.Fromadefencepointof viewthedifferencewasthatinstead oftakingonmenof21whowere ray.-recruits,restive,andunwilling, oftenstupidandill-developed,the Australianof21wouldb2atraincl soldier,agoodshot,-Sort,veildisciplined,andinterestedinhiswork. Fromaneconomicpointofviewthey hailtheimmeasurableadvantagethat atnotimewouldthetraineeshe divorcedfromtheircivilianoccupations.Theywouldbeproducersinsteadofburdensonthecommunity, andcouldcontinuetheirprivateaffairsuninterruptedly.Likeevery goodAustralian-forheregarded himselfasanAustraliannow-he hopedtheircountrymightneverbe involvedinwar,buttheymusthe Prepared.Fromtimetotimethey hadseenthewritingonthewall, faintly,andafteratimefadingaway, onlytoreappearagainwithsome newscare.Onedaytheymightsee itinred,andthenthey,andthe world,wouldrecognisehowwise theirsystemoftraininghadbeen. Hewishedtorepeatthatthesuccessofthatsystemdependedonpublicopinion.Hecouldconceiveofno mannerinwhichacommunitycould
givegreaterhelpthanbyencouragingthecadetsinthewaytheMayor hadsaidthegoodpeopleofNorthamwerepreparedtodo.Very muchalsodependedontheofficers whohadthedirecthandlingofthe cadets,anditwasforthePurposeof bringingtheseofficerstqthehighest standardattainablethatschools suchasthatnowinprogressat EastNorthamwereheld.Itwasfor theofficersnotonlstoteachthe boysdrill,butbypracticeandprecepttoencouragetheproperdevelopmentofalltheiryouthfulfaculties; tomaketheirtaskscongenialto them,andtosoarrangematters astointerfereaslittleaspossible withtheboys'workortheinterests oftheiremployers.Theboys'sports wouldnotbeinterrupted; onthe contrarytheywouldbeencouraged, andhepredictedthatinthelongrun oneresultofthecadetmovement wouldbethatinsteadofseeing,as wedidnow,asmanyas40,00omen contenttowatch20or3oplayinga match,themenwouldwanttotake anactivepartinhealthysport themselves.Hehadbeendelighted tomeetinNorthamsomanyold SouthAustralians,whosefathersin somecaseshadbeenclosefriendsof his,andhewouldcarryhackwith himverygratefulrecollectionsofthe greatkindnesshehadreceivedatthe handsoftheNorthampeople.He wasdoublyhonouredthatthereceptionshouldhavebeengracedbythe presenceofHisLordshipBishop Clune.(APPlause.)

HewaseducatedatBelvedereand Clongowes,andenteredtheSociety ofJesusattheearlyageof17. Havingcompletedhisphilosophical andtheologicalstudiedabroad,he wasrecalledtoIreland,wherehe labouredformanyyearsinthevariouscollegesandhousesoftheOrderintheusualworkofthesacred ministry.
Asamissionerandconductorof ecclesiasticalretreats,hisname wasknownandreveredinmostof thediocesesofIreland.ButhisnativeDublinwasthesceneofhis mostsuccessfulapostoliclabours.
AttheMercyHouse,Cork,onWednesday,thedeathtookplaceofRev. G.McDonnell,P.P.,Durrow.The Passingawayatacomparativelyearlyageofthisesteemedclergyman hasevokedwidespreadregretinthe dioceseofCork.Duringhis27years inthesacredministryhelaboured inmanyparishesandeverywhere earnedtheregardandesteemofhis people.AfinetypeoftheSoggarth Aroon,he,likeallhisclass,was everzealousforthespiritualand temporalinterestsofthoseentrusted tohiscare.Maytheirsoulsrestin Peace.
