ThereisalittletowncalledRed Hill,intheStateofTexas,which hasbeenthebeneficiaryoftheCatholicChurchExtensionSocietyby thebuildingofalittlechapelthere. CatholicityinRedHillhasapeculiarhistory.Duringthefamous Know-nothingmovement,anattemptwasmadetoformabranchof theorganisationinthatpioneer community.Theprincipalmanof thecommunitywas,ofcourse,consulted,andaskedtoheadthemovement.Hereadtheliteratureoffered,andtookthematterunderconsideration.Noticingthatthewhole movementwasdirectedagainstthe CatholicChurch,whichwasdescribedtohimasalmosttherootofall evil,hemadeuphismindthat,in ordertodecidehonestly,hewould havetosatisfyhimselfthatthechargesagainsttheCatholicChurchwere true,andsohebeganasystematic studyoftheChurchfromallsides. TheresultofhisstudywasdisastroustothebranchofKnow-nothingism.HeenteredtheCatholic 'Church.Hebecameamostdevoted
member,andsucceededinconverting nearlyallofhisneighbours.The missionatRedHillismadeupof thedescendantsoftheseconverts. Theyhavekeptthefaith,withall thefervourofconverts,withouteven havingachapeloftheirownuntil theCatholicChurchExtensionSocietysteppedinandmadeachapelpossible.
Thereisatendersweetnessabout someofourcommonphrasesofaffectionategreeting,simpleandunobtrusiveastheyare,whichfallslike dewupontheheart.Good-night Thelittleonelispsitas,gownedin white,withshiningfaceandhands, andprayerssaid,shetoddlesoffto bed.Sistersandbrothersexchange thewish; parentsandchildren, friendsandfriends.Familiarusehas robbeditofitssignificancetosome ofuswerepeatitautomatically withoutmuchthought.Butconsider.Weare,asvoyagers,puttingoff fromtimetotimeuponanunexploredsea.Ourbarquesoflifeset sailandgo,onwardintothedarkness,andwe,asleeponourpillows, takenosuchcareaswedowhen awakeandjourneyingbydaylight. WhatIamgoingtosuggesttoyou catholicyoungmenisthatthe mostsplendidhobbyofanintellectualkindthatanymancanbest ride,themostsatisfying,themost continuing,isastudyofsameone "fthemanybranchesofstudywhich areassociatedwithourChurch,her history,herteachings,herphilosophy TheCatholicChurch,viewed simplyfromitshumanside,isthe greatestorganisationtheworldhas everseenorwilleversee,and,as such,shemustobviouslytouchlife ateveryconceivablepointandcome intomoreor,lessclosecontactwith almosteverykindofstudy.Take philosophy,forexample,themeetneplaceandthecrownofallsci-ncesandofallknowledge,and wherecanonefindmorefruitfulpasturesthaninthewritingsofthe DoctorsoftheChurchandtheCommentariesoflateragesonthesame. clrtakehistory,andwhatisthehistoryoftheworldduringthelast twothousand'yearsbutthehistory
oftheChurchanditsstruggleswith thetemporalpowersofallcountries andofallthoseages?Ifyouare forpoliticaleconomy,whatafieldof studyinthegreatEncyclicalsofthe lateSovereignPontiffinconnection withmodernsocialmovementsand problems.
"Ortakescience,andnoonewill requiretobetoldhow'manypoints ofcontacttherearebetweenreligionandthatsubject.Thenthere arethesubjectsofarchaeologyand architecture,ofartgenerally,with allofwhichtherelationshipofthe Churchissointimate.Thereisthe engrossingstudyofherliturgy;of hermusiceventofthefolk-lore whichhasgrownuparoundher.In aword,inwhateverdirectiona man'sintellectualfanciesmaydeterminehiswanderings,therehewill findmost'fascinatingfieldsofstudy, allofthemdirectlybearinguponour Churchinsomeoneoranotherofher myriadaspects.Besidesfillinghis mindwithdelight,hewill,inpursuingthekindofstudiestowhichI havebeenalluding,alsobeengaged intheseriousandimportanttask of

Thenthereisanotheraspectofthe case.ThePrinceoftheApostles bidsustobe'readyalwaystosatisfyeveryonethataskethyouareasonofthathopewhichisinyou.' Clearly,then,itisourdutyto makeourselvesready,andthatwe canonlydobysomesuchcourseof studyasthatwhichIhavebeenoutlininginthepreviouspartofthese remarks.Here,forexample,isthe statementthat'Scienceandthe Churchcannotlivetogether.The historicalapologistdiscoversthat mostoftheancientUniversities werefoundedbyPapalBulls,and thatsomeofthegreatestscientific discoveriesofpastagesweremade inPapalUniversities_andamongst othersinthoseunderthedirectauthorityofthePopeinRome.That liemaybenailedtothecounter. Or,again,heistoldthatnoscientificmancanpossiblybeabeliever inthedoctrinesofCatholicism,and heisabletoproduceatanyratethe TwelveCatholicMenofScience whosebiographieshavejustbeen publishedbytheCatholicTruthSociety,andwhenhehasgonealittle deeperinthematterhewillfind thathecouldmultiplythattwelve bytwelveandyetnothaveexhaustedalltheCatholicnames"on Time'simmortalbede-rollworthyto befilled"asluminariesofscience. Orthescientificapologististold thatDarwinismhasknockedthebottomoutofthatstoutoldcraftthe shipofPeter,andheisabletoshow thatthemainfactwhichreally seemstoemergefromthewelterof wordsandoftheoriesincludedunder thenameofDarwinism,namely,the theoryoftransforrnism,whetherit hetrueorfalse,andatpresentit ,-.annothesaidtobedefinitelysettled,isatleastatheorywhichwas suggestedbySt.Augustine,bySt. ThomasAquinas,bySuarez,byotherChurchmenlongbeforeitbecame efashionabledoctrineofsciencein theselatterdays.Again,thereis thenersonwhomaintainsthatthere reallyisnodifferencebetweenthe pre-andthepost-Reformation.
"ChurchofEngland. Itisaneasytaskfortheyoung apologeticstudenttofindhisway outofthatjungle,forthepath hasbeenwelltroddenand'blazed,' asexplorerscallit,blazedbya wholelibraryofbooksdealingwith thatquestion.Yestherewasa timewhenthatpath,wasnotwell troddenandthetreesarounditas yetwere'unblazed.'Andasthere aremanyjungleswherepath-making isrequired,sothereisplentyofopportunityforstudentstomake namesforthemselvesbyblazing theirwaythroughandleavingmattersplainforafter-cominggenerations.Iwilloncemorequoteanexampleofsuchataskwellaccomplished.Ihavealreadyalludedtoitina Publishedpaper,andifInowmentionitagainitisnotbecauseitis byanymeanstheonlythingofthe kindwhichIcouldquote,butbecauseitisaverystrikinginstance andofspecialinteresttomepersonally,sinceIpliedthebusinessofan anatomistforaquarterofacentury.Thestatementhasoftenbeen madeinprintthatthePopesata certainperiodforbadethepractice ofhumananatomy,andinsodoing asfaraswasintheirpowerputa stoptomedicalresearchandmedicaleducation,neitherofwhichwould bepossibleundersuchaprohibition dulycarriedout.Thismatter,I confess,Oftencameundermynotice, but,ImustalsoconfessthatInever tookthetroubletolookintoitand ascertainwhat,ifany,foundation thelegendhad.Obviouslyitdidnot affectme,andIsupposeImust havedismisseditfrommymindas 'theusuallie.'Atanyratetheaccusationcontinuedtobemade,and madepublicly,andeventheBull quotedinwhichthecondemnation wassupposedtobecontained.At last'itoccurredtothatstalwart championofourChurch,Professor Walsh,ofFordhamUniversity,New York,tolookintothematter,and whathediscoveredwasthis: DuringtheCrusades,itwasthecommonestandthemostnaturalthing intheworldforaCrusadertoleave directionsthat,ithefellinthefray, hisbodyshouldbebroughthometo heburied.Asanyonecanseefor himself,thismusthavebeen "A'VeryIrksomeObligation forthefriendSofthedeadmanto carryout.Shipsweresmalland crowded,anditwasimpossiblefor everyreasontotakeonboardthe mortalremainsofanumberof largestalwartCrusaders,perhaps longdefunct.Sothesurvivorshit uponthehorridideaofcuttingup theremains,boilingthefleshoffthe bones,andonlytakinghomefor burialtheskeleton,whichwascomparativelyeasyoftransport.Itis notinaccordancewithourmodern ideasofseemliness,buttheCrusadersprobablythoughtthatitwas theonlypossiblewayofcarrying outthepromiseswhichtheyhad madetotheirdeadfriends.Atany rate,thePopeofthetimedisapprovedofthewholething,andheissued aBullexcommunicatingthosewho wereguiltyofsuchpractices.He mayhavebeenrightinsodoing,cr hemaynot,butitisabundantly clearthat insodoinghe wasnomoreforbiddingthelegitimatepracticeofanatomythanthe commonlawthatwemustnotpoisonourneighbourwithopiumpreventsthemedicalmanfromgivinga reasonabledoseofthatdrugwhen hebelievesthatitisindicated.Now

Afteraneventfullifeof64years, theRightRev.MonsignorJoseph LoughlinAhern,ofCasino,whowas oneofthenoblebandofpioneer priestsostheNorthCoast,diedre- centlyatParramatta,wherehehad heenstayingwithhiscousin,Mr.D. L.Ahern.HewasbornonSeptem- ber2.,1848,inthemountainousdis- trictofMeelin,CountyCork.Canon Morrissey,nowtheP.P,ofBanteer, taughthimclassics,andafterafew monthsinalittleschoolinCastles- land,hematriculatedinAllHallows,onthesamedayasthelate BishopDoyleandthepresentBishop ofArmidale.Clevelanddiocese,Ohio (U.S.A.),waschosenasthesceneof hisfuturelabours,andonSt.Pat- rick'sDay,1871,hearrivedthereto continuehisstudiesattheDiocesan College.OnIndependenceDay,July 4,1875,hewasordainedpriest,and almostimmediatelygotchargeofthe parishofAlliance.Seriouslybroken downinhealthafterfouryears'en- ergeticwork,hereturnedtoIreland todieearlyin1879.Buthishealth improvedinhisnativecity,and, meetingDr.Redwoodin1880,he agreedtogivesevenyears'service inNewZealand.AtthefirstNationalCouncilofSydney,in1885,he methisoldAllHallowsclassmate, Dr.Doyle,whohadjustbeennr.minatedBishopofGrafton,andagreed tojoinhisdioceseattheexpiration ofhisNewZealandengagement.Accordingly,onNovembery,7888,he arrivedinLismore,ontheRic'imond River,andtookupdutiesinthelittlepro-Cathedral.Onlytwoether priestsandtheBishopattendedthen tothewholeRichmondandTweNl district.OnOctober11,089,he gotchargeofCasino,andonFebruary15,1891,crossedtheNightCap Mountaintoattendtothepennleof thenewparishonthedistantTweed. InJuly,1893,hesoughtachangeof clime,and,afterayearwithhis classmate,Dean(nowBishop)O'Connor.inArmidale,hetravelledthroighWesternAustraliaintheearly
daysofthegoldfields.,Jn1895he travelledthroughNewealand,and wasinducedtoremaininAuckland diocesebyBishopLuck.DuringsevenyearshehadchargeoftheimportantparishesofGisborneandPukekohe,untiltheyear1902,whenhe returnedtotheLismorediocese,and tookchargeofSouthGrafton.On May14,1904,onhistransferto Ballina,hebecameVicar-Generalof thediocese,vacantsincethedeath ofFatherMcCambridge,in1902.On January12,following,hesucceeded thelateDeanWalshinCasino,and thereheremainedsevenyearsexactlyuntilJanuary12ofthis year,whenhehadtogiveupwork andpreparefordeath.Duringthe years1908,whenDr.Doylewasin Rome,and1909,whenthediocese wasvacant,hewassoleadministrator,andtheworkofthediocese wentonsmoothly.AtthethirdNationalCouncilin1905herepresentedthepriestsofthediocese,receivingforthatpositionthemajority ofthevotes.Hewasaveryintel- lectualpriest,possessingafinecollectionofbooks,knowingFrench andGermanandIrishwell.Atthe St.Patrick'sDaybanquetinMacleanin190,1.heproposedthetoast ofthedayinIrish,andthefollowingyearpreachedinLismoreinthe oldGaelictongue.HehadawonderfulcommandoftheEnglishlanguage,andhadallthe'humourof theCelt.Hewasagoodmusician, andinhisdayhadanexcellentsing- ingvoice.
DuringhisillnessMonsignorAhern wasattendedbytheVeryRev.FathersT.O'Reilly,P.P.,V.F.(Par- ramatta),andP.B.Kennedy(Com-missaryProvincialoftheFranciscans),Rev.FatherH.McGuire,and otherpriests.Hewasnursedbya SisterfromLewisham.Hospital,and visitedbytheSistersofMercy. Mayhissoulrestinpeace.
ThelateMonsignorAhernsawall thepioneerswhowelcomedhimto thenewcoastaldiocesein1888pass awaybeforehimself.WhentheCar- dinalvisitedforthefirsttimethe north-easterncornerofNewSouth WalesinSeptember,1892,Father AhernwashisdriverfromSouthPorttoLismore.HisEminenceneverforgotthenarrowescapesthey hadtogetherovertheMcPhersen's Ranges.Twootherpriestsonhorsebackmetthedistinguishedepiscopal Party,consistingoftheArchbishop ofMelbourne,theBishopofSale, Pr.Doyle,andDr.O'Haran,onthe Ballinaroad;andafewdayslater RosarySunday,1892-waslaidthe foundationstoneofthepresentCathedralinLismore.Dr.corbett, whodiedonthe29thult.,wasthe celebrantoftheMass,FatherJ.L. ThepresentmissionatSt.Patrick'sChurch,Sydney,isthefirst missiontheMaristshaveconducted onthemainlandofAustralia.Itis onlyafewmonthsagosincethe priestswhoarenowpreachingat St.Patrick'sfinishedacontinuous missionofINmonthsintheArchdioceseofHobart.Fromnorthto south,fromeasttowest,theytraversedTasmania,goingevenintothe remotestdistricts,where,perhaps, onlythreeorfourCatholicfamilies weretobefound.Since,theyhave beenworkinginNewZealand-their headquartersare,atTemuka,inthe DioceseofChristchurch-andtwoof themcamedirecttoSydneyfrom Fiji,wherethey.conductedaphenom- enallysuccessfulmissionattheSacredHeartCathedral,Suva,alsoa fruitful.retreatatLevuka.
TheFirstMissioninSt.Patrick's. Thefirstmissionofnotetookplace inSt.Patrick'sin1883.Thisfact istestifiedtobythemissioncross -underthechoirgallery-whichwas erectedbyFatherEdmundVaughan, thefirstSuperioroftheRedemptoristsinAustralia,andanuncleof thelateCardinalVaughan,ofWestminster,andofthelateArchbishop VaughanofSydney.Inthelittle bandofRedemptoristswhoinveighed againsttheworld,theflesh,andthe devilinthosedays,wasthevenerableFatherThomasO'Farrell,who is,unfortunately,unabletoenage inactivework,owingtothegrieviousillnesswhichafflictedhimafew yearsagowheninthemidstofa missionattheHaymarket.lleis nowinIreland.Indeed,mostofthe missionsheldatSt.Patrick'sduringthe29yearsgonebyhavebeen givenbythesonsofSt.,AlphonsuS, thoughthePassionistshavehad chargeofseveral.
OldMemories. AndSt.Patrick'sitselfisaplace toinspiredevotion.WhenFather JeremiahFlynnwasorderedbythe localGovernmenttoquitNewSouth Wales,helayconcealedforsome weeksinthehouseofMr.William Davis,situatedatHarrington-street, onthesitenowoccupiedbySt.Patrick'sandtheConventofMercy. Herehesecretlyadministeredthe Sacramentstothosewho isited him,andfromhishidingplacebe wentforthatnighttocomfortthe dying,andvisitthefaithfulwho stoodinneedofhisministrations. Inthishouse,whichmayjustl.be styledthefirstsanctuaryofreligionbeneaththeSouthernCross,there wasacedarpress,inwhichFather FlynnkepttheBlessedSacrament reservedfor ViaticumadministeringtheHoly tothesickandthedying. WhenFatherFlynnwasseized, thrownintoprison,and;transport- ed,withoutbeingallowedtoreturn tothedwelling,thesacredpyx, withtheBlessedSacrament,remainedenshrinedinthecedartabernacle inMr.Davis'house.Formorethan twoyears,tillafterthearrivalof Fathers'TerryandConolly,thetaperorthelampwaskeptcontinuallyburningbeforeit.Mr.Davis.was oneofthelastsurvivorsofthose whowereexiledwithouttheformalityofatrialfortheIrishpolitical movementof1798.Thefoundation stoneofSt.Patrick'swaslaidin R40

Thisgreatfact,whichfollowed closelythegloriousvictorywonby ConstantineoverMaxentiusander thewailsofRomeonthe28thOctober,312,hasaweightandameaningofthehighestimportinhistory andcallsforaspecialcommemorationinourowndays.Itchanged thefortunesoftheworld,andisits centennialcelebrationallthenations shouldrejoice,fortoChristianity theyowetheirhighestglories,their chiefprogressinmaterialandmoralwelfare,andgenerallytheiradvanceincivilisation.Catholicnationshavespecialreasons,forjoyin thiscommemoration,andaboveall Italy,whichmorethanalltheothersfeltthebeneficentinfluenceof thenewcivilisationinreligion,mannersandcustoms,sciences,literature,andthefinearts.Andamong allthecitiesofItaly,Romehasits ownpeculiargroundsforexultation, asthisseatoftheSuccessorsofSt. Petershonewithanewglory,and shedthelightofitssupremacy,of faith,ofjustice,andofcharityover thewholecivilisedworld. UndertheinspirationoftheselofIyideasandnoblesentiments.two RomanAssociations-theHeadAssociationoftheHolyCrossandthe SocietyforrenderingHonourtothe ChristianMartyrs-haveinitiateda movementtomakeasolemncommemorationintheyear19113ofthe greateventoftheyear;;I:;,whichin itsimportancereachesfarbeyond thehoundsofindividualnationsand belongstotheworld'shistory.

AremembranceofthisfirsttriumphoftheChurchandofthelibertyandtruepeacebroughtbyJesusChristtotheworldwiththe conqueringsignoftheCross,isall themoreopportunein,thetimesin whichwelive,thatthepowersof darknessarewagingfiercewaron allsidesagainsttheChristianReligion,withtendenciesandinsinuationsofareturntoPaganism.
TheCrossofChristwasthebannerunderwhichwereproclaimed thoseprinciplesthatfreedmankind fromtheshamefulyokeofidolatry andfromthebarbarismofslavery, taughtthetrueequalityandbrotherhoodofmen,raisedwomanto hernoblemissioninlife,andrave risetothemarvellousformationof thenations,which,byvirtueofthe supernaturalprinciplesofChristianitytheyembraced,haveforsomany centuriesbeenthesafeguardofhumansociet'andthebulwarkoftrue

OnSundaylastat..11o'clockMass intheCathedral,aMasscompositionbyMr.FritzHart,orchestral conductorofWilliamson'sOpera Companywaspresented(inpart) forthefirsttimeinAustralia.The occasionwasunique,inasmuchas thisworkhastobesungwithout accompaniment,andiswrittenin fiveparts.Thereisnoprecedentfor thisinthehistoryofAustralian churchmusic.Thecompositiondoes greatcredittothecomposer,who appearstohavestudiedtherecent mothproprioveryclosely,andhas modelledhisworkonpureGregorian lines.Muchofthescoreisstrongly reminiscentoftheworld-famousMaestro,Perosi.Agratifyingfeatureis thecomposer'sscrupulousadherence tothetext,themutilationofwhich hasdonesomuchtomarother well-knownMasscompositions. theopinionofjudgesbetterqualifiedthanIatleast-Imustreluctantlyputitaside.Butthereremains anotherandstilleffectiveremedy, thecorrective,anditliesinthesupportoftheCatholicpress.Thereis noneed,Ihope,togoovertheargumentslinfavourof TheCatholicPress, butatleastImaybeallowedto statethattheChurchherself,consideringwhat'sheherself,withthe voiceofherSupremePastor,has saidaboutthematteroftheCatholicnewspaper-theChurchherselfhas arighttoexpectthateveryCatholichomeinChristendomwhichcan affordtopayforasecularpaper shouldequallyseethatitisnever withoutoneofourCatholicpapers.
