Theseregulationsmusthavebeen verygallingtotheyoungapprenticeswhenweconsiderhowgorgeouslythegallantsofthosedays dressed.

NextinimportancetotheTrinity Gildcametailless,second;smiths, thirdoarbers.fourth.St.Mary Magdalenewasthepatronofthe last-named.

italists.Thementhenbeganto agitateandcombine.Wagesinthe weavingandwoollentradeswereregulatedbylawin1720,butagainwe findthelawnotenforced.In1725 themenwereforbiddentocombine. Thisdidnotcome&bouttillthe transitionofthewoollenmanufacturesfromthedomestic"cottageloom,"whichwastheruleinthe eighteenthcentury.tothefactory system.'

A CommitteeoftheHouseofCommonswasappointedtoinvestigate thesubjectattheinstigationof O'Connell.ThisCommitteefound thatwagestotheamountofE500,000hadbeendrivenoutofDublin throughstrikes.Nearlyeverytrade inDublinhadbeeninjuredbythe strikes.Thecottonprinting,which wasbeginningtoflourishinDublin, collapsedowngtothestrikes.The samehappenedtothefoundry trade;andmostimportantofall themanufacturesdestroyedby strikeswasthatofship-building. AtonetimetheLiffeyrivalledthe Laganasashipbuildingcentre. Fourgreatship-buildershadtheir worksinDublin.Butthistradewas completelydestroyed,asaParliamentaryReportof1838tellsus,by combinationofaviolentkindamong theworkers.Soonnotasingle master-shipwrightremainedinDublinandnotonlytheship-building buthalfadozenalliedtradesalso disappeared.suchasblacksmiths, rope-makers,sail-makers,etc.The coach-buildingtradewasalsoassailed,butthefamousoldfirmof Huttonmanagedtoweatherthe storm,andstillremainsto-day.

Theintroductionofmachinery broughtaboutadrasticchange.The apprenticesystemwasabolished anduntrainedhands,includingwomenandchildren,wereemployed inthefactories.Theythencombinedunderthecloakoffriendly societies,whichwereinreality tradesunions.In1803the'Clothiers'Community'combinedasa quasi-friendly,quasi-industrialleague.Inthisunionmoralbehaviour wassafeguarded.asintheoldgilds; badlanguage.dishonesty,andother ill-behaviourwaspunished.At firstthemasterswereinthisunion, butwithdrewwhenitaidedmento strike,Fromthison,forsome years,theprogressofTradesUnionismisastoryofriotandbloodshed;butthoughoftensuppressed. itforgeditswayahead.From thesesmallbeginnings,thewidespreadsystem'whichweknowtodayasTradesUnionismorignated. Itsfoundatonandgrowthwere morethanjustifiedbytheterrible oppressionwithwhichemployees weretreatedbyunscrupulousemployers.Theunorganisedworkers weresweated.andtheironlyremedy wasfoundinunionwiththeirfellow workers.

Dr.SamuelSmilessaysinoneof hisbooksthatifstrikesandcombinationscouldraisetheconditions oflabour.Dublinoughttohethe Paradiseoftheworking-man.Other IrishtownsaswellasDublinsufferedfromthestrikemaniainthose days.Amongothertradesruined bystrikerswerethoseofblanketmakinginKilkennyandglassmanufactureinWaterford.

Asfarbackas1767aweavers' strikeinthethenflourishingLibertiesofDublinnearlyparalysedthe woollenindustry.Aninteresting accountofthisstrikeisgivenina bookbyMr.T.J.Rooney,entitled "TheStrike:ATaleoftheOld DublinLiberties."Asanovel, whichthebookpurportstqbe,it hasnotmuchmerit,butAssapictureofthesocialand;ndustriallife ofthetimeitisvaluable.

TheGildofHolyTrinitycoin1.--1tir.%wealthymerchants.who dealtwholesaleinwine,coal,iron, snitothercommodities.'They engagedintradethatrequiredcapits:SThesemerchantgildscernplsselypreventedfreecommercial intercourseowingtotheirhamperinsregulation'sregardingstrangers. Tisapprenticeshipwastobefora termofnotlessthansevenyears. Hereareseineofthestrictrules whichweremadein1571regarding aptrentices:Divershavingbeenfoundwasting thinmaster'sgoods,bystealing,or playingunlawfulgames.andinexcessofapparel.tothehurtofsame. inslanderofthecompany,itwasorderedthatanyyouthwastingabove thevalueoftwelveIrishpennies,

Itisa.fact,bothstrangeanddeplorable,thatnowherehaveunjustifiablestrikesbeencarriedto suchapitchasinDublin.Receral onceflotrrishingmanufactureshase beenentirelyruinedinthiscity owingtotheunreasonablebehaviouroftheworkers.Mr.Frank MacDonagli,inaninformative paperonthesubject,describesthe stepsthatO'Connellwasforcedto taketocurbtheoutrageousdemands01certainDublintradesocieties.TheIrishleaderdeclaredthat

Wewantmorebooksandpamphletsofthiskind,ashistoriansand historicalnovelistsalikehaveneglectedtheindustrialsideofourhistory.whichitnotaltogetherasdry asdust,butisfullofcolourand romance.

Wehavenowenteredonanew phaseofourindustrialhistory.Let ushopethat.thosewhoaremouldingitwillnotignoreourownpeculiarneedsandcircumstances,but adaptittoourreligiousandnaOonaltraditions,,insteadofimportingacast-ironsystemfrom acrosstheChannelwheretheconditionsarequitedissimilarfrom ours.

Rev.Fr.Verling,V.G.,saidhe regrettedverymuchthatHisLordshipwasnotpresenttoaddress themaswhen,afewdaysbefore,he agreedtosayafewwordsatthat meeting,heexpectedtobecalled upononlytosupplementHisLordship'sremarksbyafewobservations.Duringthepreviousweek, too,fromonereasonandanother, hehadbeenbusy,andthereforehad hadlittleopportunityofpreparing anythinginthewayofanaddress. Hewasexceedinglypleasedtobe present,forhedesiredgratefullyto recognisethegood,noble,andgenerousworkbeingdonebytheSt. VincentdePaulSocietyinhis parish.TheSubiacoparishoffered awidefieldfortheoperationsofthe society-containing,perhaps,a greaternumberofpubliccharitable institutionsthananyotherparish inthemetropolitanareaOftentimesinthepastithadbeensaid tohimbypatientsinthevarious institutions,"Whyisitthat,though wearevisitedbymembersofother denominations,wearescarcelyever visitedbyCatholics!"However, thankGod,thatwasnow.allchanged.SincetheSt.VincentdePaul SocietywasestablishedinSubiaco thoseinstitutionswereregularly visited,andpatientshadexpressed

tohimtheirgratitudeforthose visits.andtheirgratefulthanksfor thegiftsbestowedonthem.He wasgladtobepresentforanother reasonalso.Hewouldliketoemphasisetheimperativeneedforincreasedactivity.increasedenergy, andincreasedzealonthepartof membersofthesociety.Totake onephaseoftheirwork.Inother lessfavoredlandsagreatdealof thetimeofmemberswasdevotedto visitingthesick,thepoor.andthe destitute.InAustraliathereally poorwerecomparativelyfewin number.butthatcouldnotbesaid ofthosewhowerespirituallypoor. Hefearedthatwedidnotproperly realisethenumbersofthoseCatholicswhoneverwenttoMass,or neverapproachedtheSacraments. thenumberofchildrenwhowere unbaptised,andthenumberof Catholicswhomarriedoutsidethe Church.WhenSundaycamethey rejoicedatseeingtheChurchwell filled,butwhentheysawpeople attendingHolyMasstheywereinclinedtolaytheflatteringunction cotheirheartsthatallwaswell.

Butdidtheyeverseriouslyponder onthenumberswhowerefalling awayDidtheyrealisethenumber ofthosewhooughttobeCatholics butwerenotDidtheyrealisethey shouldstrivetodotheirpartto assisttheChurchandtheprieststo dotheirworkTakethecaseof parentswhosendtheirchildrento non-Catholicschools.Aeloyso trainedgrowsupandgoesoutto workhedoesnotmixwithCatholicsbecausehedoesnotknowthem. Hehaslivedinanon-Catholicatmosphere,andwhenthetimecomes heprobablymarriesaProtestant, thechildrenbecomeProtestants andarelosttotheChurch,andlost also,probably,toGod.Wasitnot amelancholyspectaclesometimes witnessedofpersonswithgood .risknames-Murphy,Maguire,and soforth-whowereWesleyans,Baptists,orPlymouthBrethren He rememberedhavingreadanaccount ofanon-Catholicfunctionwhich tookplaceinthisState.Aperson whohadbeenpresentatthefunctionwasaskedhowtheaffairhad goneoff,andthereplywas."Splendid.Flanniganpreached.andMurphytookupthecollection.'That showedthatmanywhooughttobe goodCatholicswerelosttothe Church.ThepriestsandtheChurch werestrivingtodotheirpart,but

should,however,feelthatinhelpingotherswewerebutdoingour simpleduty,forwewerecommandedtoloveourneighbourasourselves.Weshouldbeinspiredby thecharityofChrist,whobecame allinalltous,becameonewith us,tosaveall.Membersofthe society,then,musthaveagenuine sympathyforthosewhoneededsuccouring.Suchsympathywoulddo goodaliketothosewhoperformed andtothosewhowerehelped.A kindly,affable,andgentlemanner ofttimesturnsawaywrathandremovesthethorninthepathwaybetweenabrotherofSt.Vincentde Paulandthosewhomhewouldhelp. Thesecondcharacteristicwaspiety, andeverymemberofthesociety shouldbeassiduousinattendingthe meetings.Thesocietywouldsoon die,soonceasetoachieveitsobject,ifmembersattendthemeetings indifferently.Amemberwhoconstantlyabstainedfromattendingthe meetingshinderedthegreatworlc thesociety.Suchmembersa-ere layingonothersthe1;ardenwhich theyshouldhearthemselves,and byandbyetheywouldfailtoshare intheawardspromisedtothoseby OurLordforworksofmercydone inHisname.Lastly,itwasuseless anyoneendeavouringtomakeothers betterunlesshetookcareofhis ownpersonalsanctification.We werebound,firstofall,totakecare ofourownsouls,tobefaithfulchildrenofHolyChurch.Amember couldnotgivehelptoanyoneifhis ownlifewasnotbeyondreproach. Theyshould,then,sanctifythemselves,and,beingimbuedwiththe SpiritofChrist,they-couldhelp otherstodogoodandwinsouls.to Christ.Thesocietyiwasengaged w uponagreatork,andhewould impressuponmembersthatthey shoulddoalltheycouldtobring carelessCatholicsbacktothe Church.Sometimeswewereproud tothinktheChurchwasgoingahead byleapsandbounds,buthefeared therewasaseriousleakagegoing on.AsmembersoftheSt.Vincent dePaulSocietytheywerecalled ontoassistinstoppingthatleakage: Letthem,firstofall.intheirown livesbesincere,sustainedinthe goodworkonwhichtheywereengagedbytheSpiritofJesusChrist Himself.Iftheywoulddogood, theymustrespondtothecallwhich camefromGod,seekingbyprayer andtheHolySacramentsofthe Churchtheguidanceandstrength necessarytoenablethemtodotheir workwell.

Andthepeoplecouldhelp.because oftenintheirdailyworktheycame intocontactwithandcouldinfluencesuchpersonstoreturntothe Church.Apriesthadnotthesame opportunity,forthosepersonswere afraidofandwouldnottalkas freelywithapriestaswiththose whoworkedsidebysidewiththem. BeforetheestablishmentoftheSt. VincentdePaulSocietyCatholic menwereshyofspeakingonreligioussubjects.Nowtherewerebrothersandsistersofthesociety whoseobjectitwas.totalkofand helpontheworkoftheChurch, especiallyinrespectofcarelessand indifferentCatholics.Butinorder thattheworkofthesocietymight hewellandeffectivelyclone,there werea.few-characteristicswhich mustheheldbyeverybrotherand sister.Thefirsthewouldmention wereaffiabilityandsympathy.It hadbeentrulysaidthatnoonehad arighttointerfereinthelifeof anotherunlessmovedbyagenuine sympathy,atruefellow-feeling.We

Mrs.E.W.Goodman,of279FitzgeraldStreet,NorthPerth,W.A., says:-"FortenyearsIwastorturedbyaviolentformofscalpeczema whichwasfirstcausedbychemicals Ihadusedforimprovingthehair. AmongtheseisthePrimeMinister, whowasinhisplaceonthesuccessiveoccasionswhenMr.Gladstone introducedtheBillin1886andits successorin1893.Mr.Birrell,who willactaslieutenanttohischiefin thethirdattem7t,didnotwitness eitheroftheearlierendeavours.
