Howoftendowenotreadinthe summingupofthecharacterofsome exemplaryCatholicwhohasPassed tohisreward "Hemaintained

thesimplefaithofhischildhoodto theend."Woulditnotbewellfor usallifthiscouldbesaidwhenthe earthrecedesfromusindeath?

Ah,butwehearyousaythisis notpossible,astheworldandits machinationsdestroyinusthis trustfulnesswhichbelongstochildhood.Itisnottheworld,butsin whichdoesthis.WemistrustGod andHisinfinitemercyonlywhenwe havebetrayedHisstandard-turned fromthePathofmoraldut, The worldcannotrobusofthissimple faithofchildhoodifwebutwearunstainedourbaptismalrobes.Poets suchasLongfellowandWordsworthhavesungoftheirlostsouth. Itistruesomethingdepartsnever toreturn.ButifweliveinGod's keepingthatsomethingthathasdepartedwithitsnosticillusionwill bereplacedbythestrangerfaithof thesoul-afaithtriedsometimesby tribulationandsorrow.

Thereissomethingaboutthese dignaariesoftheChurchthatmarks themoutfromtherestoftheworld. Meetoneinaroominordinarylife, ouwillfindhimkind,simple,courteous,friendly,genial,accordingto hisnature-innowasdiffering,apparently,fromotherPeoplethere; butyouknowinstinctively.thatthe manyouarespeakingtoisraised insomewayaboveotherMel thereissomething,aninherentdignity,perhaps,thatmakessousae, "ThatisaprelateofRome."There isnotonethattriestomaceyou feelthatheisraisedinanywayout, oftheordinaryrunofmenthere areteenywhowouldseemtohiee it-AbbotGasquetfirstamongthtui -yethiswonderfulsimplicitycannot concealthatheissomebody. ButIthinkthatwhenhepennedthe "riposte"thathehadaveryfirm andfiercedeterminationthatthe treth,ashesawitafterallthepatientwork--thattruth,asterashis effortscouldeffectit-shouldindeed Prevail.Anditdid. Lessstriking,thoughimmeasurablymoreimportantinAbbotGasquiet'slife,isA.D.,i9u7,theyear whichsettled,itwouldseempermanently,themainscopeofhisfuture workforthe('hunch.Lessstriking because,likesomanyotherthings, ofwhichweonly.seetheresult-and thatwecannotalwaysappreciatetheworktowhichthatdatebooed himgoesonalmostunseenandthe reportsthatarepublishedofitdo notconvey-thefaintestideaofits magnitude. OneofPopePiusX's mostmarredcharacteristics, and oneofthesecretsofhissuccessin themenegement,andtoagreatextentreorganisationoftheChurch,is hismarvellousintuitioninPickne hismen.AbbotGaseuetintheRevisionoftheVulgateisacasein po'nt;CardinaldeLaiattheConsistorialCongregationisanother andthereareothersinnumerable.It hesoneunfortunateresult-that whenanyceleinauthorityislooleeng foragoodmanforsomespecial workhecannotfindone,becausethe Popehasalreadygotthemall.And itisafactthatallthegoodworkersisRomeareover-workedwhich isthereasonwhytheirhealthbreaks downsofrequently.

Lookingbackonit,itseemsalmost asiftheoccasionwasmadeforthe man,andthemanfortheoccasion. Theen;Wrywas,inthefirstplace bist'.riral,andnotonlydid he knrrv.isflinchasitwaspossiblefor any,toknewaboutthehistoryof thelafermetiontimes,hutifthere weei,nynewfacttohediscovered,

Thatrepresentsonlyapartofthe undertaking,betthinkforamomentehatitmeans.Allthesetexts havegottobefound.Theyare scatteredallovertheworldtheVaticanhassome,theBritishMuseum hassome,thereareothersinvariouspartsofItaly,France,SPain-in everycountryinEurope.Somemay havefoundtheirwaytoAustralia. Andwhenfoundtheyhavegottobe collatedthatiseverysingleone hasgottobecomparedwithevery singleotherandwiththetext.Now itisobviousthatallthesemanuscriptscannotbecarriedbodilyawaytoRomeandkepttheretillthe woreisover.Theyeremuchtoo precioustobepartedwithandmuch toooldtobemoved.Norcanthey becopied itwouldtaketoolong, andthecopierwouldbeboundto makemistakes. TheAbbothas themphotographedeachintoits ownhook,byaspecialprocesson toaspecialsurface,whichnot*only praservesthemforever,butprevents acreaseofanysort;and,topreventthepcssibilityoferror,the photographsarecomparedwiththe original,andanythingthatisnot absolutelyclearisnotedinthe margin. Thentheystarttocomparetheircodicesbymeansofthe Photographswiththeprintedtext.I wasshownonedayanenormous bonewithatextoftheVulgatein thefirstcolumnontheleft,andaboutthirtyothercolumns,inwhich werenotedvariantsinthedifferent codices.Thatwasjustanexperimentalvolume,representingathouandthpartoftheorganisation,the headquartersofwhichareinRome atSt.Anselm's,andtheintricacies ofwhichare,toanoutsider,simply bewildering.

THEHOLYFATHERSHOOKHIS HEAD.

Foritcontainshisworkandsurely theworkiswell-housed.St.Anselmoisnotold;itwasgivento theOrderbyLeoXIII,inI9oo.It has,ofcourse,a'beautiful.chapel;a gloriousorgan,too,justfinished.It has,asisdueinamonastichouse inRome,acentralcloisteredcourt, whichthearchitecthasmademore picturesquethanmostbyacrossing, dividingcloister. Cnthelevelof thefirstfloorthecloistersmakea terrace,apleasantslimywalkin winter,ento.whichAbbotGasquet's reamopensoust.Itseemsasimple roomforthedirectorofsuchastupendouswork.Butitisnothere itisonthetopfloorthatthework isdone.Thereisoneroom',already fullofhugevolumes,carefullyordered,intowhichthevariantsofall thephotographedcodicesarebeing collatedwiththeVulgatetext.But thesearemerelyfortheBookofExodus,youwillbetoldandyouwonderiftheMonesteryitselfwillbe h'genoughtoconta'nthevolumes ofthecompletedwork.Andthere1., isabigthree-windowroomlooking east,wherethemainworkisdone; whence,ifyouknowwheretolook, youcanpickoutin.thedistancethe spotwhere,inacaveunderanoverhangingrockinthegorgeoftheAnio,St.Benedict,thefounderofthe order,thefounderofwesternitiOnaetiCiSM,whichmeanstheworld's learning,startedhislife'swork;and fromaspotinthecorridorthereis aglimpsetohegot,justpastthe chapelwall,ofthedomeandcross thatsymbolsthefoundatienofeverything.Sothereisinspiration at. WhenAbhotGasquettookhisfirst rePortto.theVatican,andcouldtell theHolyFatherthattheinitialdifficultieshadbeengrappledwith,and thattheworkwasProgressingsteadilyheaskedtoberelievedofhis officeasPresidentoftheCommission.Hefeltthathehaddonehis sharehehadbro'enthebackofIt; andwithhishistoricalworkandthe careoftheEnglishBenedictines,the OrderofwhichheisAbbotPresident,histimeiswelloccupied.The HolyFathershookhishead.The Abbottellsastoryofthataudience. Itoccurred,somesixmonthsafterthe terribleMessinaeertheuakeandthere wasbeingpreparedattheVaticanan accountofallthemoneyreceivedby theHolySee,,andofhoweverypennyhadbeenspent.ThePopenoticedthatAbbotGasquet'sreportwas inhisownhandwriting."ButI donotexpectthePresidentof a Commissiontodoalltheworkhimself,"hesaid.TheAbbotdidnot reply,butglanceddownatthetable wherelaythesheetsoftheMessina accounts.Feur-fifthsofthemwere inthehand-writingoftheHolyFatherhimself WHEREHELIVES.

Inthatarticlethewriterrecounted theextraordinarydisaprearanceof the"FerretwhichhadbeencharteredbyamannamedSmithforP. voyageintheMediterraneanSea. Theur.wholesomeandde:strolls effectsattendingtheseexperiments, alreadyreferredtointhemselves threwgreatdoubtuponthepopular sPiritistictheory-thatthecommunicatingagentsarethespiritsofthe dead.Buttherewereotherelements ofaseriouscharacterwhich,when fullyandfairlyconsidered,altogetherdemolishedthattheory.Thespiritsforinstance,couldnotsstisfacterileidentifythemselves.Allthe &fortewhichsciencehadmade in thatdirectionhadproveddismalfailures.Searchingquestionsonthis Pointledtovaguerepliesofaternperlsingcharacter,leaingthecrucialauditionsunanswered.Then, again,thewilfulanddeliberateimpersonationofthedeadbythesesoiriteagencieswasanadmittedandacknowledgedfactwhichhadgreatly impededmodernresearchandledto ferieecondisappointments.Bt it hadgonetoshowwhencethespirits

derivedmostoftheirknowledgeand Information.Andinviewofthis extraordinaryPower,itwasaquestionwhetheranythingcoulde.er satisfactorilyestablishidentity.Again, thenewteachingofthespiritswas whollycontradictoryinitscharacter oneagencyoftenflatlydenyingwhat theotherhadasserted.Therewas nothingwhatevereitherintheir statementsrespectingtheirlifeand itsconditions,orthesupposedtruths, disclosed,whichshowedonenessof ideaandaim,andunanimity.

SPIRITISMANDCHRISTIANITY.

But,foraCatholic,theWhole questionastothenatureandaim ofthesemesteriousbeingswaspracticallysettledbeethefactthatthey uniformlydeniedthemostcentral dogmasoftheCatholicFaithand declaredthatChristwasnotwhat Heclaimedtobe-thatHiswords hadbeenmisunnderstoodandMieinterrreted.Itwasknownandadn:ittedfactthatthemanwhobecame aspiritistceasedtoheaChristian inanydefinitesense.
