Bythisreligioustest,membersof theCatholic,Unitarian,Universalist andJewishChurchesaredebarred from,participatinginthefullprivilegeoftheY.M.C.A.
inapPealsforcontribations.in invitationstoyoungmento take advantageofitshospitalities,the YoungMen'sChristianAssociation, isalarge-minded,unsectarian,philanthropic,socialinstitution,aiming toaffordhomestohomelessyoung mentoguardthemfromevil,touplifttheminmoralsandgoodcitizenship.Toputits'Evangelicalisminto theforegroundwouldwondrouslyrestrictthepoweroftheappeals;and so,forthetimebeingEvangelicalism isbiddenintoobscurity.Thisis whathappensincontinentalAmerica;thisiswhathappenstoayet greaterdegreeinourcolonialdependencies,whereCatholicismisdominant.InthePhilippineIslands,in thePanamaZone,inPortoRico,the Associationproclaimsinloudest tonesitsutterunsectarianism,and expressedsurprisewhenthesinglemindednessofitsbenevolence is broughtintoquestion,whenCatholicsmakeoppositiontoiton the groundofitsoppositiontotheirCatholicfaith.
ButintheseprofessionsofunsectarianismistheAssociationhonest andtruthful? ArenotthoseprofessionsastherusesofoldentimeGrecianperfidybeforethewallsofbesiegedTroy?
MostpeoplewilladmitthePerfect rightofanyorganisedgod',beita religionssocietyornot,tomakeits ownlawsforthegovernmentofits Ownmembers.Butnoonecanclass as"non-sectarian"anassociation whichrequiresareligioustestfrom itsofficials. Letthenon-catholicwhoreadsthis imagine,foramoment,thatheis livinginaplacewhereamajority ofthereoPleprofessthesamefaith ashimself.LethimsupPosethata memberofanotherdenomination comestohimaskingformoralor financialsupporttowardsamovementpresumablyphilanthropic.If yot:foundhackofthemovementdiscriminationagainstyourownreligiousbelief,wouldyounotbewarrantedinsuspectingaphilanthropy builtonnarrowsectarianism?Would not,:ourconclusionhealogicalone thatthissortofPhilanthropywas butacloakofproselytism? ButwhatabouttheCatholicchurches? ManifestlyRev.Mr.Peters omitsmentionofthemforthereason thatheknowshecouldnotsaythe sameofthemashesaysoftheProtestantchurches. 'l'heCatholic "bestcitizens"arenotmovingout oftownTheCatholicChurchis nottearingdownabandonedplaces ofworship.Ithasnoneabandoned toteardown. Onthecontrary mostlyallitsplacesofworshipare overcrowded.Whatistheexplanationofallthis? Thenagain,whyabandonplacesof worshipbecausethe"bestcitizens" havemoved? Ifthe"best"have gonehavenottheotherkindremained,andaretheynotthekindthat standingreatestneedofreligious instructionandministration?Christ didnotabandontheworstcitizens OneofthechargesagainstHimwas thatHewastoooftenfoundamong such.AndwhatdidHesa,about it? Theythatareinhealthneed notaphysician,buttheythatare ill.Iamnotcometocallthejust butsinners.

Areitsprofessionsfreeof fraudanddeceit?Shoulditnotbe frankandopenlydeclarethatitisin allitspartsEvangelical-thisand nothingelse;thatitexpectspatronage,whetherinmoneyorinfrequentationofitshallsfromEvangelicals, notfromothers,especiallynotfrom Catholics? IndividualofficialsofthisAssociation,betheyeversobroad-minded, havenopowertochangetherulings oftheGeneralBoardofGovernment. AccordingtothatBoard,theY.M.C. A.isstrictlyasectarianorganisation. Thereforeantcontributionofmonorotherassistancegiventowards theproposedhouseforFilipinosis giventowardsthesupportofaninstitutionwhichdiscriminatesagainst thefollowersofseveralreligious creeds,andnotablyagainstthecreed ofwhichtheFilipinos,asapeople, areadherents.

InacountrylikeIrelandwhere a tiercestrugglewasbeingfolightfor thenation'sexistencenonationalorganisationcouldpossiblyhenon-po- litical(applause).Inpublicmattersthemanwhohadnopolitics wasalwayaaTory.Nobodyever accusedtheGaelicLeagueofbeing Tory,andasamatteroftactthe Leaguebadbeenaspoliticalasits membershadfrometimetotimechosentomake,t,whichhadbeentoaverygreatextentonoccasions.Hutthe enunciationofthisprinciple,andthe discouragementofanythingthattendedtowardsPoliticsdroveoffmany ofitsmemberswhoconsideredthemselvesParticularlypractical-minded andtowhomthevetoingofpolitical discussionsavouredofthefutilityof themerelyacademic.Furtherthere wasintheLeagueanextraordinary tendencytowardsbecomingamere literaryandlinguisticmovement. Themovementswhichhadsprurg fromitswork,stcial,industrial,literaroeconomic,evenathletic,all tendedtofosterthatcommonculturewhichihilosopherscall"the hallmarkofaration."According- ly,anytendency.todevelopmerely alongliterarylineswasadistortion andamisdirectionofthetrueobject ofitsmission.Therewasalsothe neglectofthestudyofIrishhistory. astotheimportanceoftheseveral branchesofIrishstudyhewouldbe inclinedtogosofarastoplace thatofIrishhistoryinthefirstrank (applause).Hispurposewasnotcriticism,butrathersympatheticinquiryintothecauseswhichhadbrought aboutwithinthelastfewyears,the coolingofenthusiasms,thechilling of theoptimisms,thealmostdespairand lethargywhichfollowed. The industrialactivitywhich,arosecontemporaneouslyatanyratewiththe birthoftheGaelicLeaguemusthave animportantbearingupontheIrelandofto-morrow.Heshouldbe verylongsorrytoseetheindustrial movementofthefuturedevelopir. an\way,whetherfromthestandpointofthenationorfromthe standpointoftheworkerpion.;the linesofso-calledEnglishprogress.
