For instance,hetookoccasion,whenreligiouswereturnedoutoftheirhousessomeyearsagoinFrance,to PersuadetheIndiansthatthiswas donebecausethepriestshadrevoltedagainstlawnIauthority.andhe e'enwentontosaythatmanyof themhadgivenuptheirfaithand becomeProtestants..Happily,however,aScotchman,inaninfluential positionatCrossLake,tookcare toputarightcomplexiononthe sadeventsofthepersecutionin France,andhegaveduepraiseto thelivelyfaithofFrenchCatholics.
Seeinghowmattersweregoing,the ministerthencalledasecretmeeting horitinetoittheChiefofthereser.e, oneofthetwoCouncillors (theotherwasaCatholic),andUse orsixcatechists. ByhismeddlingwithCatholicchildrentoinducethemtoattendthe Methodistschool,andbyhisfalse accusationsofCatholicpriests,the WesleyanministergaveriseinFatherBonnaldtoacertainamountof bile,andthis,uponanoccasion,the incensedpriestdischargeduponthe offendingone,withtheresultthat theministerkeptquietforatime.
SometimesCatholicsurveyorsor Prospectors,orengineersoftheGovernment,andotherinfluentialpersonspassbythereserve,andassist .atthecatholicservices.ThiscreatesagoodimpressionontheIndianswhoareproudtofeelthat theybelongtotheirreligion,and thatCatholicsarenot,asisrepresentedtothem,allpoorignorant people.

Inoneofthecases,bothParentswere Methodists,buttheuncleandaunt were('atholics.Theminister.receiv.ednosatisfactionwhenheaccosted thefather,andreproachedhimwith whathehaddone.Inthecaseof thefirstchildofthisMethodistcouple,ithadbeenhaittisedsecondly,andconditionallybyFatherBonnald. Ifafterwardsbecameveryill,and thereseemedlittlecharceofitsrecoversbutthemissionaryreadover itthePrayerforasickchild,and itrecovered. Theparentswere verythankfulforthisfavourgrantedbyGod. Thesefewincidentsshowhowthe Catholicmissionaryhastobeever readyandonhisguardowingtothe tacticsandoppositionofnon-Catholicministers,whoevenhaverecourse insomecases,tocalumniesandmisrepresentations.

Mydearbrethren,evenifourLord hadneverrevealedthatHewasto providethemeansnecessaryforthe salvationofthesoul,andtoProvidethosemeansinsuchawaythat thereshouldnotheinthemanydisorderoranyconfusion,yetfrom consideringthematerialcreatione shouldbeabletoknowthatGod wouldlookafter.thehumansouland Preventitsbeingengulfedindarkness,indisorder,andinconfusion. Letusbrieflyexaminethematerial creationtofindhowcarefulGodhas beeninthoseworks.Ifwetakethe smallestflowerthatweoftencrush underourfeet,consideringitoflittleornovalue,andexamineit carefully,weshallfindthatithas anexcellenceandperfectionwhichall thehandiworkofallthementhat everlivedcouldneverattainto.It wePutthatlittleflowerundera microscope,weshallseethereawonderfulorganism,allconspiringto theperfectionofthatflowerandto themanifestationofthewondrous worksandgloryofGod.Ifwego furtherandbeholdtheanimal;ofthe worldweshallfindevenintheformationoftheirhadieqanorder thatissuperb,manifestingsometimesanexcellenceintheirsenses, whichissuperiortothatofman himself. 'Theycarryoutperfectly theendforwhichGodcreatedthem; ifweviewthefishesofthesea,we martwithwhatrapidity,easeand gracethe,passthroughthewaterhowtheyalsofulfiltheendGodintendedthemfr.Thereisnodisordenwhateverinthatkingdomofthe sea.Beholdhowthebirdsofthe airareadaptedtopassthroughthat elementassimply,asgracefullyand aseasil3asthefishswimthrough thewater.Inalltheseanimalkingdomsthereisperfectorder,perfect adaptationofthemeanstotheend intendedbytheirCreator.Ifwe gazeuponthethingsthatareabove us,contemplatingthesun,themoon thestars,andtheplanets,wefind alsothereaoonderfulorderand harmonywhichproclaimthegreatnessandpowerofGbd.Astronomersteachisthatsomeofthese starsareflyingthroughspaceatan incrediblespeed. Weareamazed fromtimettimebytheappearance ofthoseheavenlybodieswhichare calledcornets-whencethe\'comeand whithertheygoweknownot.Many manyyearsPassbybetweentheir aPPearances,and3ettheyarefling throughspaceatarateofspeed, whichwecannevercomprehendpassingthroughthatmultitudeof heavenlybodieswhosenumberwe cannotevenimagine,and3etthereis nocollision,thereisnodisorder, thereisnoconfusion. Letustakecertainepochs,when thatChurchwasexposedtothegreatestdangers,andseehowevenat suchtimeseverywordofthatprophecyhasbeenliterallyandabundantlyfulfilled.Afterthedeathof OurLord,HisApostlesandDisciples setforthtopropagatetheChurchin theworldaccordingtoHiscommandment,"Goteachallnations," andbeforetheirdeaththeyhadevangelisedagreatpartofthethen civilisedworld.How theybehaveintheirtreatmentofit?Did theycompromisewithit?Didthe, lesserthosetruthstemporisingwith it?

St.Peternevermadeacompromise hepreachedthedoctrinesof our Lordashereceivedthem.HepreachedthedepositoffaithasGod handedittohim,andlinall3heconquered,butnotbylesseninginthe slightestdegreeanyoneofthose doctrineswhichhadbeenentrustedto hisguardianship.Hewaspersecuted,itistrue,hewasimprisoned,and rejoicedtobeworthytosufferfor hisl.ord,andlawnyhewasputto death,butthedoctrinesneverdied. The',remainedintheiroriginalpurityastheLordhadgiventhemto him. Dreadfulpersecutionswere carriedonduringthelifeof St. Peterandafterhisdeath,because Romanlawforbadetheworshipof theonlyGodandthepreachingof Hisdoctrines.TheChurchwasdrivendownintqthecatacombs,that is,tothoseundergroundcaverns wherethelightofdayneverpenetrates,andifanyofyou:,m3brethren,haseverbeeninthecityof Romeandviqitedthoseholyplaces, youwillheal.letoknowwhatour ancestorsinthefaithsufferedinorderthatthe.,mightperceivepureand undefiledthatdeposit,ofthefaith. "LetmesayfirstthatIlookforwardwithconfidencetoseeingthe firstsessionofarebornIrishParliamentopenedbyHisMajestythe Kinginperson.Nowordsofmine couldadequatelysuggestthedemonstrationofloyaltywhichsuchan occasionwouldcallforthfromthe massoftheIrishpeople,whohave toolongbeenkeptinanunwilling' estrangementfromthethroneand thepeopleofGreatBritain,Ina Parliathentopenedundersuchauspicesalltendenciestoperpetuatedisunionbetweenonecreedandanother, oneracialstockandanother,would be,bycommonconsent,stampedout asunworthyandunpatriotic.For myownpart.Ishouldhopetouse whateverinfluencelayinmecontrol inthesamespiritasGeneralBotha hasusedhisgreatauthorityin SouthAfrica. fromthemomentthatanIrishGovernmentbegantoframealegislative programmenewlinesofcleavageand ofassociationwouldpresentthemselves.Weshouldhavetodealfor example,withreformofthePoor Law,which,byconsentofallparties,isurgentlyneededinIreland. Takeanothermatter.Irishopinion woulddemandimmediatelysomereformoftherailwaysystem,whichis cumbrousandextravagant,andwhich ashasoftenbeenshown,favoursimportedtradeattheexpenseoflocal trade,or,again,takethequestion ofArterialdrainage.Everyoneagreesastoitsnecessity.Onthe educationquestionweshouldbe stronglypressedbyRomanCatholics andNationalists,aswellasbyProtestantsandUnionists,toimprove thedeplorableconditionofsecondary education.Butwhatweshouldbe askedformainlywouldbelegislativeandadministrativeactiondirectedtoimprovinganddevelopingthe agriculturalandindustrialrifeofthe countr.,-aboveall,theindustriall'le. theverylastthingthatIrishopinionwouldtoleratewouldbeaction prejudicialtoan;existingindustrY, andthatisthebestofallsafeguards fortheinterestsofUlster.
