Eightymilesstillfurtherupthe RioGrandeisDelRio.AnOblate Fathertookupresidencethereinthe Americanmissionin1899,whileanotheralsoresidinginthatmissionattendedtothespiritualwantsofthe MexicansatDelRio,andthroughout alargeoutlyingdistrict.'theMexican('hurchwasnotbuiltuntil1906. Itaffordsaccommodationforfive hundredpersons.Itwasopenedin NovemberofthatyearbyBishopForest. TwoOblateFatherstook chargeofit,andinJuly.19inenteredintotheresidenceinthenew Presbytery.Oneoftheirfirstduties wastoputinorderanumberofirregularmarriages.Thenprovision hadtobemadeforthereligiouseducationofthechildrenfor,withthe exceptionofsixtyunderthecareof twoSistersinasmallconvent,all therestattendedthepublicschools.
Sixmissions'havetohevisited fromDelRiothemostimportantof whichisatadistanceofonehundredandfortymiles.Oneweekof everymonthisspentthere. The CatholicPopulationofthedistrictisbetweenfiveandsixthousandsouls,butonlyabouthalfof thesecanbesaidtohavecomepracticallyundertheinfluenceofthemissionaries.TheFathershavetobe constantlygoingfromplacetoplace inallthesemissionarydistricts. Theyarehappyinfeelingthatthe, aremaintainingtheholycauseof religionandstrivingtosavesouls.
Remarkable'Conversions
WenowaddtothevarioushistoriesofworkdoneamongtheIndians indifferentpartsofCanadasanaccountofsomeparticularconversions.Ourreaderswillseeinthem thelingerofGod.
In1896,intheOblateFathers' ScholasticateinCanada,twoclassfellowswereordainedpriests.These wereFathersHermitteandGiroux. Theformerwassoonattackedbya fatalmalady,anddininghislastillnessFatherGirouxactedashisinfirinarian. Afewdaysbeforehis deathFatherHermitterequestedhs companiontositbyhimashehad somethingtosay.Hebegan by declaringhowhehadofferedhimself totheBlessedVirgintobeamissionaryamongtheIndians. Then hesaidIamtoldthatIshallnot goamongthem.Heknew,hedeclosedtoFatherGiroux,thathis endwasnear,butheyetinsisted thathewouldgoamsngtheIndians.Hetoldhiscompanionthat
hewastogoinhisstead,andthat hebadofferedhissufferingsforthe poorIndianswhomFatherGiroux wastoevangelise,soastoobtain thegraceoftheirconversion.FinallyFatherHermittedeclaredthat hewouldbewithFatherGirouxin hisdifficulties,evenpromisingbins wonderfulconversions.Induetime FatherGirouxreceivedhisobedience toPropeedtoAthabaska,andhis sickchargediedpiouslyonthessnd April,1897. AmongtheincidentsinwhichFatherGirouxfeltthathiscompanion's promisehadbeenfulfilledwasthe followingHisSuperiorsenthim toanencampmentofunconvertedIndiana. ThehistoryofLiverpoolcontains nothingtoequaltheterribledisaster whichoccurredattheoilcakemills ofMessrs.BibbyBros.,situatedin GreatHoward-street,andFormbystreet,where,owingtoanes-plosion, twenty-threelosttheirlivesandover onehundredwereinjured.Thetotal numberofmeninvolvedwasupwards ofonehundredandforty,ofwhom aboutseventyweretreatedatthe localhospitals,theremainderbeing allowedtoreturntotheirhomes, aftertheirinjurieshadbeenattended to.Manydeathshavesincetaken Place,andatthetimeofgoingto Pressthedeath-rollwasthirty-four. Thegrowingneedsofthesick poorofMelbourneareprovinga severestrainonsuchinstitutions, asSt.Vincent'sHospital,saes theMelbourne"Age."Itwas madeplainatafunctioninconnectionwiththatinstitutionona arecentSundayafternoonthatthe numberofcasesrequiringtreatmentwasincreasingrapidlyevery yearandthattheProblemofcopingwiththeincreasewasbecoming averyseriousone.

IftheobjectionofCatholicstothe Presentschemewensameremushroomobjection,themajority,might havesomereasonforignoringitnbut ithasbeenmaintainedwithevergrowingstrengthsincetheEducation Actcameintoforce,andCatholics havesurelygivenProofenoughby nowoftheirseriousnessinthematter.Theirschools,areadmittedlyUp, totheStatestandard,andtheyinviteStateinspection.Aswearea Christiancommenity,fewcanconsistentlydenythewisdomofthereligiouselementintheeducation of children.Theschoolsthatblendthe secularandreligiouselement areunquestionablythe best forthecountry.Someobjectthat theCatholicschoolsareincompetitionwiththesecularschools,but competitionisanenergisingelement inlife,ifrotthemainspringofprogress,andinthematterofeducationisentirelyinthepublicinterest, asallarefortheState.Wecan wellunderstandwhythosewhohate religionobjecttoschoolsinwhich thereligioussideofeducationisattendedto,butwefeelanoverwhelmingmajorityoftheArstralianpeoplearenothostiletoChristianity, andareloversoffair(leysowe haveeveryreasontohonethatwhen sectarianprejudicefinallydiesdown theywillseethesituationinits trnielight,anddojusticetotheir Catholicfellow-citizens."
