Oneofthecentralmissionstations inBritishColumbiaisatKamloops amongtheShushwapandThomson tribesofIndians.ThefourOblate Fathersstationedtherehavecharge ofovertwelvehundredsouls,and serveeightchapelssituatedatvariousdistances,inanimmensedistrict. TheyvisitShuswap,Spencer'sBridge thevalleyofMamette,Merrit,Lake Quilchena,DouglasLake,and AspenGrove.ThereisanativereserveatDouglasLake. InreachingsomeoftheselocalitiestheC.P.Railwaytakes themissionariespart ofthe wa,Itisacountryofmagnificent forestsandrichland,thoroughlycpene:1toEuropeans.Onbothsidesof theColdwaterRiver,whichflowsintoLakeNicola,thereareminesin operation. TheCatholicIndians whausedtohecalledbysuchnames asLittleWolf,Duck,Sun-rise,BrokenNose,Snow-Flake,andsuchlike, arenowknownbyChristiannames, suchasAmbrose,Xavier,Catherine, Emma,etc. Thenativesassistir thechapels,orintheirownhuts, atpublicprayers,morningandevening/andtheyareveryfaithfulinreceivingtheHolysacramentsasoccasionnffers.Theprayersaremostlysungorpsalmodied.

Owingtochangedcircumstancesit isnolongerpossibletocongregate theIndiansforeightortendaysat atimefortheexercisesofamission.Theynowhavetheirlittle farmsandtheirstock,andpoultry, andcannotbeawayforanylength oftime. SothePriesthastogo moreamongthemiandtospenda greatdealoftimeinjourneYsfor thispurpose.Butthesevisitsof thepriestarehighlyappreciated,and theydomuchgood.

Thesorcererisknownasa"TamanoasChinook).Heplaysuponthe credulityofthenativeschieflybya veryelementaryknowledgeofspecifics orsin-pleremedies,orelsebybold imposition.Inthecaseofoneof theseimposterscalledTom,theIndian gavehimhissupport.At onetime,afterthesorcererhad completedatermofimprisonmentfir imposition,thechiefoftheIndians intheNicoladistrictsentaconveyancetobringhimamsnghistribe. FromthespecialreportonthestatisticsofmarriageanddivorcemadetoCongressbyCarrollD.Wright.inFebruary, 1880,wecondensethefollowingstartling facts:-
