ThebuildingofNewYork'snew publiclibraryisapproximatelyrectangular,withtwointeriorcourts, andfourmainstoriesbesidesthe cellar.Thebuildingproperisthree hundredandninteyfeetlongand twohundredandseventyfeetdeep. Itcoversanareaofonehundredand fifteenthousandsquarefeet,exclusive oftheincludedcourtontheFortiethStreetsideofthesite.Itis dividedintomorethantwohundred roomsandhalls,andthemainreadingroomoverlookingBryantPark onthewest,isthelargestreadingroomintheworld.Thisroomis twohundredandninety-divefeetlong seventy-sevenfeetwide,andfiftyfeet high.Beneathitisthemain,stackroom,dividedintosevenstoriesand fittedwithsixty-threemilesofshelves,withacapacityforhousingtwo millior,sevenhundredthousandvolnines.Otherbook-roomshaveacapacityofabouteighthundredthousand-makingthelibrary,asit standsto-day,thePotentialhomefor threeandahalfmillionsofbooks. FatherPaquette,O.M.I.,of holy memora.,whodiedinMay,1905.The chargeofthisimportantwork,and oftheDukeLakeMission,wasin 1904transferredtoFatherCharlabois whoisnowVicarApostolicofKeewatin.Theschoolisforboysand girls,andisplacedunderthecare oftheSistersofthePresentationof Mary.ThepropertyofSt.Lawrence'smissiontelltothismissionof DuckLake.Theopeningupofthe countrybyrailways,andtheinilux ofEuropeans,havechangedtheold conditionofthingsinthe"Prairie." SoonthedevotiontoOurLadyof LourdesofSaskatchewanspreadfrom' theCreesandHalt-breedstoCatholicsettlers,andvisitorstotheshrine includedCanadians,Irish,English, French,'Germans,I'oles,Galicians, andRuthenians.

FatherCharleboissawthatthe timehadcometogiveirrportanc.eto thedevotion,andtoestablishanaionalpilgrimage.Withtheapproval oftheBishop,the16thJulywasfixedfortheannualevent.Astheoriginalstatuehadsufferedfromthe weather,anichewaspreparedfor it,protectedwithglass.Thenan oratorawasbuilt,topermitofholy Massbeingsaidthere.BrotherGuilletwasbroughtfromthenorthto carryouttheseworks,andonthe dayofthegreateventhereceived thefavouroftherestorationofthe fulleseofhis'limbs.

FatherLecocre,O.M.I.,fromwhose accountoftheShrinetheseparticularshavebeenborrowed,mentionsa singularoccurrenceofapriordate. Hewasreturningin1884from FrancetohismissionatProvidence, neartheGreatSlaveLake,bearing withhithmaulMissionaryarticles, donatedorpurchasedinFranceand Canada.Fearingthatifencumbered withtoomuchbaggage,hemightnot reachhismissionbeforethewinter setin,whenitwouldbeimpossible todoso,heleftthegreaterpartof thecasesinchargeofFathersFafardandMarchandattheirmission stationonFrogLake.Afterhehad proceededtherebrokeouttheCree rebellionunderBigBear,inthe courseofwhich(2ndApril,1885)the twopriests,andallthemissionwere takenPrisoners,andorderedtomarcW awayuseranescortofCreewarriors.Wehavecalledattentionina previousissuetothesingularfact thatonthreeoccasionsofcalamities toOblatemissionariesinCanada, twovictimswereclaimedoneachoccasion.Sowasithere.Theprisonerswereorderednottofallout oflineunderPenaltyofdeath.En route,however,oneoftheFathers didleavetheranks,andhewasinstantlyshotandfell.Theother Fatherrantohisassistance,andinstantlxtoo,healsowasshotdead. Thusperishedthesetwoyoung,joyous,andzealousOblates.Atthe missioneverythingwasbrokenopen andpillaged,withtheexceptionof oneofFatherLecorre'scases.This wasleftintact.Thewarbeingendedthiscasewasforwardedinthe autumntoProvidence.Whatla, itsarrivalgave Thecasecontainedabeautifulstatueuninjured. theirtemporaladviseraswell as theirspiritualfather.Thiswasthe casesometwoyearsagoinstaart LakedistrictofBritishColumbia, whenthetribesaroundHazleton rightlyresentedtheinjurydonethem 0thewhites.TheEuropeansand Canadianslookingforlandsuitable furagricultureorsearchingforgold andotherminerals,oftenshowed scantconsiderationforthenative tribes,andbyiiresdestroyedtheir huts,andinterferedwiththeirpursuits,thusrenderinglifeintolerable andthemeansofexistenceprecarious.Thegametheyhuntedwasdisappearing,andtheanimalsvaluable fortheirfurswerebeingdrivenaway.Thepioneersofcommercialenterprisespitchedtheirtentscloseto andallaroundtheIndianreserves, andthenativesfeltthemselvesaggrievedformanyreasons.ThenativesalongtheSkeenaRiverhelda cour.ciltoseewhatshouldbedone, anditresolveditselfintoadoubt), tiontotheGovernmentatOttawa. ThemembersoftheDeputationreturnedwithouthavingobtainedany satisfaction,andthenoncemorethe Chiefsofthetribesmet,andresolved upondesperatemeanstoremedythe situation. Theydeterminedwhen thewintersnowscutoticommunicationwiththecoast,tomassacreall thewhites.

AtHazletonthewhites,alarmedat theaspectofaffairs,preparedfor thecontest.Theydugtrenchesin whichtoplacethewomenandchildrenincaseofattack,andtheytook allnecessary precautions.But inthemeantime,thegpvernmenthavingbeenmadeacquainted withthecourseofevents,despatchedaCommissiontoexaminethe causesofcomplaint,andtotryto pacifytheIndians.

OurLadyofLourdesinSaskatchewan

Someinterestingdetailshavereached ofapilgrimagetoashrine ofOurLadyofLourdesintheDioceseofPrinceAlbert(,Canada).The originofthisshrinemaybetraced toanOblateBrother(FrerePiquet) whowenttohisrestadozen\ears ago.Having,uponavisitto France,goneonpilgrimagetoLioardes,andbeendeeply'pressedupon theoccasion,hewishedtoseethe devotiontoOurLadyofLourdesestablishedamongtheCreeIndiansat hismissionstationinSaskatchewan. HewasstationedwiththeRev.FatherFourmond,O.M.I.,atSt.Lawrence'smissiononthenorthsideof theSouthSaskatchewianRiver, eightmilesfromStobart.Owingto wantofmeanstosupportit,this stationwasfinallyabandoned.Near ittherewasagroveofaspentrees inthebeadofahillbytheriver, withaspringofclearwater!lowing underit.QuiteanidealPlace, thraightthegoodBrother,furaStatueofOurLadyofLourdes,andfor apilgrimage.Nofundsbeingavailableatthemissiontobuyastatue, itremainedforoa.Lad,herselfto bringthepiousdesigntoapractical issue. Ithappenedthatatthistimea oungwomanwasfargoneinconsinnption,andthatthedoctorgave heronlyafewdaystolive.BrotherPiquetsaidtoher:"Makea novenatoOurLadyofLourdes,and promiseherthatyouwill.biaastatueofherifyouarecured.-The novenawasmade,andonthelast dayofittherewasaradicaland completecure. Sheisstillliving, andinwonderfulhealth.ThestatuewasProcured,andwaserectedin thesnotchosenbytheBrother.The half-breedsofthedistricttookupthe .devotion,andvisitedthespottorecitetherosaryandcemendthemselvestoourLady'sprayers. Whenthemissionwasabandoned, thestatuewasleftwhereit'hadueen erectedandmorethaneve%theCatholicsvisitedthespot.Eight milesdistantatDuckLake,situated betweenthetwobranchesoftheSaskatchewanRiverisSt.Michael'smissionStation.Heretherebeganin 1877,inaveryhumblewaythe IndianBoardingSchoolwhichlais prove.' benecialtowardsthe

Thepilgrimagecontinuedyearby year,andnotwithoutfavoursaccorded.Therewastheeaseofahalfbreedoftheneighbourhood,suffering fromaninveteratehernia,which preventedhim'fromdoingworkof ankind.Hewasbroughtbeforethe Oratory,heardMassthere,andreceivedHolyCommunion.Afterthe Masshegotupsaying:"Itisall over,thegoodMotherhascuredme."

Sincethattime(1906),hehasnot sufferedanyinconvenience.Another cureitasquiteasremarkable. A youngSisterattheConventboardingschoolofN.D.deSionatPrince Albert,sufferedexceedingly.fromulcersinthehead.Herhealthbecame sofaraffectedthatshehadtokeep herbed,andcouldonlytakeaspoonfulofmilkfromtimetotime.The otherSistersandboardersmadea novenaofPrayersandCommunions toOurLadyofLourdesatSt.Lawrences',finishishingonthemorning oftheannualpilgrimage.Onthat morning,attheusualtime,theConventChaplainhadjustgivenHoly Communiontoallwhohadpresented themselves,whenthechapeldooropened,andtothesurpriseand -zo, ofall,thesickSister,whosecoalitionwascausingthegreatestfears, beingnowcured,walkeduptheChala.1toreceiveCommunionafterthe rat.Thiscurealsoprovedpermantnt,andtheSisterstillhascharge ofherclassesliketheothermembersofthecom'munity.

FarfromcivilisationthemissionaryamongtheIndiantribesinthe re6onsofmountainsandlakesin thevastcountryofnorth-westCanada,hasahardlot.Butwherehis apostolicworkisaPPreciated,heis consoledbytheaffectionanddevotednessofhispeople.Heisoften

TheCommissionreachedHazelton inJuly.Atthesametimeoneof thepriestsfromStuart'sLake,FatherCoccola,O.M.I.,alsoarrived there.Hewasable'privatelytoexplaintothememberstherealgrievancesofthenativetribes,Asthe IndiansfromtheSkeenaRiverhad rejectedtheefTortsofFatherIiejacq, O.M.I.,whenhesoughttoevangelise them,thepriestleftthemt,their

Ontheoccasionofthepilgrimage in1yo8,BishopPascal,O.M.I.,visitedtheshrine.Hewasattendedby severalOblateFathersandseveral secularpriests.Thegrottohadbeen imPr)vedinmanyways,andthe firststatuehadbeenreplacedbya handsomenewone.TherewereECIOUt twothousandpilgrims,ofwhom someeighthundredwereRuthenians andGalicians.MassfollowedMass, andhundredsofCommunionswere given.ThereweretwoHighMasses, oneaccordingtotheGree'K,andthe otheraccordingtotheRomanrite. ShortsermonswerepreachedinEnglish,French,German,andRuthenian. Greatwasthedevotion.displayed. IntheafternoontherewasaProcessionoftheBlessedSacrament,duringwhich,besidestheprescribed hymns,othersit:variouslanguages, werealsosung.AfterthefinalBenediction.BishopPascalpreached. Thewholeeventwasamagnificent displayofCatholicpiety.

WeconscientiouslyrecommendtheRONISCHPIANO,because embracesallthatgoestomakeathoroughlyMusicalInstrument. '('reTonequalityoftheRONISCHPIANOissingularlyrich.This isnodooitoneoftheprincipalreasonsforitsgreatpopularity.of allthepianosinuseinAustraliamorebearthenameofRouischhnn anyother.

AtLakeTatla(whichhereachedO- ak terfivedays),hewasmetbynatives fromBearLake.Whentheyarrived atthepointwheretheDriftwoodRiverentersLakeTatla,theymetwith theirfirstseriousdifficulty,forgreat treesbarredthePassage.Thecanoe wasdraggedoverthefloatingtrunks but thethebaggagewascarriedalong bankbythemen.Thismodeof procedurewentonforthree dads. AtlastonSaturday,the7thAugust at.1o'clockintheafternoonthe canoewassightedfromBearLake. andgunswerefired.Greatwasthe joyofthenativestoseethePriest amongthem.Fouryearsprevious- lyhehadpromisedtocometothem, iftheywouldbuildachapel.

ThechaPelwasallbutfinished. FatherCoccola,helpedbythemost skilfulofthenatives,constructeda tabernacle,anddecoratedthealtar. TherewasadifficultyinProcuring meansoflighting.Duringtheweek thatthepriestspentthere,hebap- tisedmorethantwentychildrenand liveadultsherectifiedunions,and blessednewmarriages.Hewaskept busy.Buthefounditimpossibleto delaylonger,forhisprovisionswere runningshort. Happilyabear camearound,andwasquicklyshot. Hisfleshwasdividedamong the needy.Severalmarmotswerealso snared,andthesewereusedinthe sameway.

ThesurroundingsofBearLake arenofieldforagriculturists,for soiliswanting,andtherearetoo mans.rocks.Therearehowever,a fewspotswhichmightbeusedfcr gardens.

Onthe16thAugust,FatherCoccoInbidadieutohisflockofmountaineers,promisingtovisitthem againinayear'stime.Hewentby wayofLakeTatla,thendowntwentymilesofriverleadingintoLake Trembler(orQuaker),wherehisboat wasnearlylostthroughaviolent squall,andfinallydownthirtymiles ofriver(theRiverTache),leading intoLakeStuart.Onthe22ndAugust,hehappilyreachedhismission stationofGoodHope,havingbeen absentsinceJune.Hiscsmpanion priest,FartherBellot, ,vas delightedtohavehimhack. Theopeningmomentofthegreat EucharisticCongresswasnighand themessagewasheraldedtothousandsofresidentsandhundredsof visitorsintheQueenCitywhenthe chimesofSt.l'eter'sCathedralpealedloudlyandwerere-echoedbythe bellsofeveryCatholic('hurch in Cincinnatianditssuburbs. Then wasitthatthelongandimposing processionofacolytes,seminarians, religiousandsecularpriests,monsignori,bishopsandarchbishopswendeditswayfromthePastoralresidencetothesacrededifice.Animmenseassemblageofpeoplecrowded thesidewilesandvestibules,lined thewalksandthrongedtheChurch stepseagertocatchaglimpseof theProcession.Asitenteredthe Portalsthegrandorganresoundedin wondrousmelodyandwell-trained voiceswereupliftedintherendition ofElgar'sprocessionalgreeting,"EcceSacerdosMagnus."(Behold theHighPriest!)
