SirGeorgeToulminsaidtherewere somequestionsuponwhichthey mightreasonablyholddoubts,but theywereabsolutelycertainthey wererightwhentheytoldyoungand oldnottotombintoxicants.They wouldbebettercitizens,betterparents,andbetterworkersiftheywere teetotal. Ofthattherewasno doubt.Thechildrenalsowouldbe betterlookedafter.Sobrietyimprovednotonlythehome,butelevatedthenation.Infact,itseffects weresobeneficialthattheycouldnot beover-estimatedapplause).Most ofthemlovedIreland.Itwaswell torememberthatfewPeoplehad donemoreforIrelandthandidFatherMatthewwhenhewentthrough thelengthandbreadthoftheland preachingtemperance,anditwasnot incorrecttosaytheregeneration of Irelandchiefly.beganwiththatcrusade.CardinalManning,agreat friendofthePoor,alsorealisedthe evilsofdrink,andstronglyadvised thePeopletobeteetotal. The Cardinal,whopractisedwhat he preached,wasacquaintedwiththe sufferingsofthepoor,andknewthat, theycouldnotaffordtowastetheir money.Thehealthofthepoorwas theironlywealth,andiftheytook strongdrinkitruinedthem(hear, hear).

"Thereneverwasatimeinthe Church,"continuedhisEminence, whenitwasmorenecessaryforthose whohavetodirectthefaithfulto hewellmadeupineverysubject thanthePresent.TheChurchis assailedfromallquarters-bypoliticians,h'.philosophers,so-called.by scientificmenso-called,andbyenonoinists,whoIthink,arethemost dreamylotofall. Alltheseare comingupatthepresentday.You havedifficultiesraisedfromdiscoveriesinarchaeology,difficultiesraisedagainsttheSacredScriptures, andsoon,andIarrperfectlysure thatatleastthestudentsinthis Collegewillbeabletodefendthe FaithandChurchduringthecourse oftheirpubliccareerafterwards."

AtthelastmeetingoftheIrish IlishoPsheldatMaynooth,Cardinal Loguepresiding,thefollowingstatementwasissuedinreferencetothe recentstrikeswhichweresodisastroustothecountry.
Thebitterordealofaseriesof strikes,fromwhichthecountryis painfullyemerging.hasexcitedsorrowandpityinthebreastofeveryonewhohasahearttofeelfor ourpeople.AsthePastorsofthe wholedock,boundtoseekjustice andmercyforall,butladenwitha special toiling masses,whoareoftentheleastable todefendtheirrights,wehavewitnessedwithintensegrieftheenormousdamageentailedonthousanIs ofworkmenandtheirfamilies,on therailway.andothercompanies, theirshareholdersandcustom.n.o andespeciallyonthecommunityat largeinIreland.
TheworstaspectofthissadbusinessisthatthemaincrisiswasPrecipitatedundertheguidanceofmischiefmakerswhohaveshownthemselvesasrecklessaboutthefateof theIrishworkingmanastheyhave beenindifferenttothelifeofourrisingtradeandnascentindustries.A moreglaringinstanceoftheevilof beingtiedtoGreatBritaininour localaffairscouldnotwellhe found.
"TheleadingconflictwasnotdecreedbythefreelyelectedrepresentativesofanIrishorganisat'onformedfortheprotectionofIrishlabour.Neitherwasthegeneralrailwar'strikeorderedforsuchlegitimatePurposesastoobtainaliving wageorsecurereasonablehoursof employment.hutforthebUndpurposeofasympatheticstrike,the principleofwhichleadingtradeunionistshavedenouncedasfatalto tradeunionismitself,aswellasto industryandcivilisation.Ir.any recoursetotheformidableex-edient ofastrikeoralock-outthefirst essentialistohaveone'sownimmediatequarreljust,and,assuredly, therecentsadexperiencehastaught asharplessonoftheneedofwise andprolongedconsultationbeforeresortingtoextremecourses.

Andwhiletheyteachsowellthe secularknowledgethatisrequired, theyalsoteachthemthatwhichis ofsomuchmorevalue,thepriceless giftthatwillgainforthemeternal joy,thatpricelessgiftwithoutwhich itisimpossibletopleaseGod-the trueFaith.IfthetrueFaithbe nottaughttothelittleones,how thencantheycombattheerrorsof theworld,andretaintheirsoulsin theFaith? TherearesomesayingsofChrist recordedbytheevangelistswhich naturallyinterpretedascontaining animplicitreferencetoapurgatorialstateafterdeath;andinSt. Paul'sEpistles,apassageofsimilar importoccurs,andotherpassages thatbeardirectly.onthequestionof prayersforthedead.
