Parentsoftensay "Iwantmy childrentohaveaneasiertimethan Ihad."Thewishiswe'llmeant frequentlyitismostunwise.Sometimes-thestrugglemayhesosevere astoinjure,cripple,orevenblast aman'slife.Usuallyitisnotthe struggle,butthelackofitthatcripples.Veryoften,perhapsusually thebardthingswecomplainofand fromwhichwewishtosaveourchildrenarethecauseofwhatsuccess wehaveattained.Tothemweowe whatpowerofinitiative,whatmasteryofselfandeventsareoursto themweowewhatstrengthofcharacterwepossess.Itisthehard thingsoflifewhichwehaveconquered,orbravelyfoughtagainst, evenifwehavenotconquered,which havechieflydevelopedwhatoriginalityandindividualitywehave.To savechildrenfromanyblightthat may'havebeenonourlivesiswise, iskindness.Toshieldfromallhard knocks,tomakeallthingseasy,is todoabouttheworstthingfor them.Thisistodowhatiscalled "toinurebykindness"-amisnomer appliedtowhathastheoutwardformofkindness,butwhich lacksthesubstance.Itisinreality,cruelty. Itistoblightlife bythecurseofeasythings.

Thisishowitwasfounded.There oncelivedinSt.Mary'sstreet,in Derby,aPiousbaker,namedCornelius.whogavemanyloavestothe poor.

OnenightOurLadytoldhimina visiontogotoDepeDene,sellall thathehad,andliveasasolitary, forthesakeofherdivineSonand herself.

Thegoodbakerobeyedandwent outtofindDePeDene-notknowing whereitwas.

ButashewentthroughtheaillageofStanleyheheardamother tellherdaughtertodrivethecaaves toDepeDale,andhewentthesame road,andfoundasmallandrocky cave,underahill,inwhichheerectedanaltar,andlivedasahermit. Herehelived,doinggood,andhere hediedhappy,andhererosethe greatAbbeyofDale,sacredtoOur LadyofPity,ofwhichtheruinsonlyremain.

ButwecanloveOurLadyofPity, canmakeashrineinourhearts,and showourdevotionbyperforminglittleactsofcompassion.

Theyoungestchildcanbeherclient-forheorshecangotoamourner,oranyone,whoisintroublecan say,"I'msorry,"andgiveakiss.

MissionaryIncidents

WehaveinPreviousnumbersof the"Record"narratedvariousfatalaccidentstoOblateMissionariesin theCanadianDominion.FrontWinnipeg,wheretheJesuitFathershavea flourishingcollege,newscomesofthe lossofaJesuitBrotherinAlaska. BrotherPaqain,S.J.,lefthismissionthereearlsonthe27thJan,ary,ism,toProceedtoaChapelon theYukonRiver,abouttenmilesdistant.Hisobjectwastoeffectsome repairs.Hewentbyadogsledge. SnowwasfallingandasevereblizzardsoondeveloPed.Reshould havereturnedintheevening.The night,howeverwentby,andnothing washeardofhim.. Asearchparty setout,andtheysucceededintracinghim,butheandhisdogswere foundfrozentodeath.

Somefouryearsago(Sept.8th, 1907),anOblateBrotherlosthis lifeontheLiardRiver,intheSouth oftheMackenzieProvince. This wasBrotherRio,O.M.I.OnAugust 26th,allaloneheleftthemission stationatLiardtogotoFortNelsontorendersome'assistancetol.'atherLeGuen,O.M.I.,whowasthen stationedthere.Thedistanceisanout 16.)miles.Hewent by canoe,andhewasexpectedbackat Taardonthe8thorTothofSeptember.Ashedidnotarrivethen,the twoFatherstherebecameextremely anxious.Onthetathanemployee oftheHudsonBayCompan'brought totheMissionasmallcasketfor letterswhichhadbelongedtoBrotherRio,andwhichhadbeenfound. FatherGouyandtwoIndiansset outinsearchhutreturnedinfour days'timewithouthavingfoundaoy traceofhimorofthecanoe.He hadmetwitharIndianencampment fortymilesawayontheeveningof September7tth,andtherehescent theright.Whenproceedingnext morning,goingwiththestream,the windwasagainsthim.Itissupposedthattowardseveninghehad drawnintowardsthebankofthe river,wherehiscanoestruckapile Setinthebedoftheriverandsank. Sadthoughsuchanendmayappear, theFatherswereconsoledbyrememberingBrotherRio'spietyandnis devotednesstothem,andtothe mission.Hisreligiouslifehadbeen oneofmerit,andofrreparationfor thefuture. The snowhadfallenheavily,sothathis sledgedrawnlasthreebigdogsmade afurrowthroughitasitwent.But thejourneywasslow.Thesunwent downathalfpastthree,andthere werestilltwelvemilesbeforethe youngmissionary.HehadnoblanketsorPreparationforthenight, sohehadtoProceed.Threemiles fromthemissionisHayLake.He fearedtocrossit,butthedogsfeelingthemselvesnearhome,wentwillinglyforward.Themissionaryto affordthemsomerelief,followedthe sledgeinhissnow-shoes;buthehad notProceededfarwhenslippingin thesnow,hefellintosomewater. Notwithstandingthedarkness,heextricatedhimself,butthesnowinhis racketsfrozeandmadehisprogress Painfulanddifficult.Thesoundof thedogs'bellsguidedhim,and thankstothescentoftheleading dog,astraightwaywasmadefor themission,whichwasreachedin threequartersofanhour.The youngmissionary.(FatherMoisan) lostthebigtoeofbothfeet,and,no surgeonbeinganywhereinthoseregions,hehadhimself,withhispenknife,tocutawaythePartsaffected. Thewinterinthoseparts,which lastsfromsixtoeightmonths,is severe.DuringittheMissionaries visittheIndianswhoarescattered overanimmensetractofcountry. Thehutsofthenativesaremadeof branchesoftrees.Inthecentreof thehutalargefireiskeptburning, dayandnight.Suchistheconditionoftheclimate,thatwhileyou gethotinfacingthetire,yourback isallbutfrozen.Thecomfortsof lifeareentirelywanting.Theadventofthemissionariesamongthem hastendedverymuchtocivilisethese Indians.TheOblateshavebeenin theMackenziedistrictforfiftysears.

Thedeceasedlivedinacampnee-, theGolderHorseshoeminedump, withamateThomasGraham,toil wasemployedasasawyeratthe GreatBoulderProprietarymine.On theoccasioninquestionha_wasin hisworkingclothes,andwasappe.entlyonhisway-homefrom workatabout9.3op.m.Ashewas makinghiswayoverthecrossing, the9.29trainfromKamballiestruck himheavily,andhewasthrownoft theline,unconsciousandbadlyinjured.Thedriverimmediatelypulledup,andseveralpersonswentto theunfortunateman'sassistance.He wascarriedinastretchertothe railwaystation,wherethePolice weretelephonedfor.

Animportantwont. whichtheC.Y.M.S.hadtakenupin thePastfewyearswasthatundertakenforthebenefitofCatholicboys aftertheyleftschool.Thiswasthe periodofaboy'slifewhensomany werelosttotheChurch.TheBoys' BrigadeorScoutsorwhateverother formtheworkmighttake,concluded thespeaker,shouldbelookedupon asthetraininggroundfortheC. Y.M.S.,andiftheboysfoundthat theyhadthegoodwilloftheyoung men,theywouldinturnbecomegood membersoftheSociety.HeinstancedseveralcaseswhereprominentmembersoftheC.Y.M.S.were takingaleadingpartinthatwork amongtheboys,andwithgreatsuccess.TheworkoftheC.Y.M.S.itselfneededanddeservedencouragementandtobebetterknown.He hopedthedaywasnotfardistant, wheneveryparishinthedioceseof HexhamandNewcastle,andinevery otherpartofthecountry,would haveitsbranchoftheSociety,tinderwhoseauspicestheyweremet,sc, thattheremightbeformedagreat andmightybandofworkersforthe Catholiccausethroughoutthiscountry.(Applause.)

Attheoutsetthespeakersaidthat intheC.Y.M.S.theyhadanorganisationineverywayadaptedforthat workamongstCatholiclaymen, YOUNGANDOLD,considered theleadersoftheChurchtobemore necessaryto-daythaneveritwas before.Duringthepasttenyears hehadseentherealgoodthatcould bedoneandwasbeingdoneinmore thanoneparishwhereabranchof theC.Y.M.S.hadbeenestablished. HewasconvincedthattheSociety onlyrequiredtobeknowninorder tobeappreciatedandsupportedby everyparish,andeveryparishpriest throughoutthecoontry.Naturally enough,thefirstquestiononeasked aboutasocietyofthiskindwas "1%hatareitsobjects?" These werebrieflystatedinthebookof rulesissuedbytheCentralCouncil "Mutualimprovement,andtheextensionofthespiritofreligionand brotherlylove."Duringthelastfew years,hecontinued,agreatdeal hadbeensaidaboutthe"religious atmosphere"inregardtoCatholicschools,andheventuredtothink thatiftheywereequallyanxiousas tothekindofatmospherebywhich theiryoungmenandboysweresurroundedaftertheyhadleftschool, theyshouldbemuchnearerthanthey weretotheattainmentofanideal CatholicManhood.,Butitmight besaidthattheycouldnotalterthe moralatmosphereoftheworkshop, andfactoryPossiblynot,thoughhe didnotadmitthattheymightnotdo agreatdealmorethantheythought inthatdirection.Buttheycertainlycouldalterthemoralatmosphere inwhichCatholicboysandyoung menspendtheirleisuretime and thiswasthegreataimoftheC.y. M.S.Hecontendedthatitnotonly couldstemthetideofleakage,but thatitactuallydidso.Likeevery othergoodwork,thatoftheC.Y.M. S.wassubjecttomisunderstanding, andthemethodsadoptedinitswork tocriticism.Peoplewhodidnot understandtheworkcouldnotpossiblyknowthedifficultieswithwhich theworkershadtocontend.Men oftherightkindforthissortof workwerenevertooplentiful,and muchthattheywouldliketodo hadtobeleftundonebecauseof thelackofworkers.Thisshould notbeforgottenbythosewhofrom theoutside,asitwere,delightedin Pointingoutanylittleshortcomings theremightbeaccordingtotheirway oflookingatthings.Ifinsteadof doingthistheywouldcomeinside, andusewhateverinfluencetheymight Possesstowardsgettingnearerto thestandardaimedat,theywould soonfindthattherewaslittletime forcriticismandanyamountof scopefortheirabilitiesinother waysmoreusefulandmeritorious. Neverthelesstheymustnotignore criticismthatwasfairandhone3t, norclosetheireyestothepossible existenceofdangersandabuses.For instanceithadbeensaidthattoo muchattentionwasgivenbytheC. Y.M.S.totheprovidingofamusementforitsmembers,andthatthe religioussideoftheworkwasapt tobelostsightof.Thiswasadangerrecognisedbyallseriousworkersamongsttheyouthofthepresent day,andwasnotPeculiartoone societymorethan,another. Acordialshakeofthehand,and anengagementtocometoMr.Percival'sroomthatevening,wasthe -resultofthisconversation. The acquaintancethusbegunsoonrilene intoaheartylikingonbothsides. Theirtalkgenerallyturnedonthose pointsmostinterestingtoboth;ard bitbyhitthetruthbecameunfolded toJames'sheartandmind,andthe Prejudicesofhischildhoodmelted awayasiceinthesummersun.His

onlyrealdifficultyhadbeenthesocalled'adorationoftheVirgin Mary.

"Itseemssotoputherinthe PlaceofGod,"hesaidoneday"and toberightagainsttheBiblewcrds oftherebeingonlyonemediatorand oneintercessor.Itseems,too,to me,totakeawayfromthehonour duetoOurLord,astheonegreat advocateforuswiththeFather.' Iwishy,mwouldexplainthis to me."

Well,mydearJames,weCatholicsshouldbesimplygeese,orrather.Ishouldsay,hereticsaccording toourownteaching,ifweadoror PaiddivineworshiptotheE.,..ed Virgin,orbelievedthatanybodybut christwastheone,absolute,sett-sufficientmediatorbetweenGodand man.YoumayaskthesimplestlittlechildintheChurchifitimaginen, 'hattheVirginMaryisGod,and ouwillfindithasneverdreamtof suchanabsurdity.AskanypoorCatholicwomanwhyshepraysto theMotherofiiurlord,andhonours hersomuch,andshewilltellyou thatitissimplyandwhollyforthe hurourofHimwhoseMother she is..'

"Thatseemsaliverywell,"rePliedJames"butasChrististhe oNEmediatorforuswiththeFather,'whyshouldwenotgostraight totheSonofGod,withouthaving recoursetoHisMother,whoisonly acreatureafterall?"

"Because,"answeredMr.Percival, "theChurchwillnothaveusforget ourCreed,thattheSonof 'lod washornoftheVirginMary,and thatwemayaswelldenythatGod everbecamemanasignoretheMotherwhomHechoseforHimself. EithertheBlessedVirginistheMotherofGod,orGodneverbecame man.IfsheheGod'sMother,and thesaintsandangelscanhearour PrayersIfordoesnottheCreedalso declarethe'communionofsaints'?, thensheisthemostpowerfulintercessorwecanhavewithGod.But thefactofourbelievingthatshe canprayforus,andintercedeinher ownwayforus,isnothingmore thanwhattheBibleteachesusto dooneforanotherinahundred places.St.Jamessays(chap.v. Prayoneforanotherthatye maybesaved,forthecontinualprayerofajustmanavailethmuch.'

Well,James,IbelievetheMotherof Godto.beamuchgreatersaintthan Job;and,justinproportionasshe isthegreatestofallsaints,webelievethatherprayers,or,asyou liketocallit,her'mediation' (thoughIdon'tliketheword,simplybecauseyouProtestantsareapt tomisunderstandit)isthemore availing.
