Apriestvisitedonlyatintervals.Theresidenceservesasreceptionroom,dining-room,bedroom, kitchenandstore.UponthearrivaloftheBishopitsfurnitureconsistedofonechair,twoforms,an emptycase,whichservedastable, andacookingstove.Therewere alsotwotrunksfortheattire,or forthefoodsupply,ofthevisiting missionary. ItwaseightyearssinceithadfallentothebishoptovisitThePass, butuponhisarrivalaschiefpastor oftheVicariatetotakeupresidencethere,heshowedhimselfacquaintedwitheverymemberofthe assembled'Mock,greetingtheminthe mostfatherlyway Onthemorning ofMarch8th,hisLordshipproceeded tothemissionresidencetotakepossession.Afewboxes,containinghis effectswereaddedtotheexisting furniturealreadydescribed.Canadians,English,French,half-breeds, andIndians,asfarasspaceallowed, crowdedintotheroom.FatherRenaud,O.M.T.,wasincharge,andFatherTurauetil,O.M.I.,theMissionaryatLakeCariboo,hadcomewith thebishop.Thelatterpriestusing aboxasadesk,sethimself to translateintoEnglishandFrenchthe bullsoftheHolyFather,PopePius X.,erectingtheVicariate,andappointingthefirstVicarApostolic.;the formerpriestatthesametimeusingaformasadeskmadeacopy oftheaddresstohePresentedtohis Lordship andBishop('harlebois himselfwasmeanwhileenthronedon

Wenowgiveatranslationofthe CreeAddress:-"ToourgreatChief ofPrayer,whomwelove.Itseems tousthatto-dayisagreatfeastdayinourcountry,hereatThe Pass,seeingyoucometous,Monseigneur,clothedwiththehonour of GreatChiefofprayer.Foralong timewehearditsaidthattheywishedtomakeyouGreatChiefofPrayerinthisnortherncountry.This iswhywewereanxioustoseeou arrivequicklyinourcountry.At lastto-dayitcomestopassthatwe seeyou.Trulywerejoice,andwe arethankful.Atothertimesthou hasttreateduswell,whileyenwere apriest.Thouhesttakengood careofoursouls..Andoftenthou: hestsufferedmuchwhencomingto visitus.Andmanytin-es,toothou hastinstructedusingoodconduct. Thosewhotookpartinitmarched throughthestreetsintheir fancy costumes.TheprocessionwasheadedbyaPolicemanandamandressedasasoldierbothofwhomwere onhorseback.Nextcamealarge numberoflumperscarr%ingtheir banner,followedby.theBunhuryband whichconsistedofmusiciansoftill shapesandsizes.Onalorry,which wascoveredwithseaweedanumber ofmenwereseated,theyweredressedasKingNeptuneandhisatte:idants.Abouttwentywomensuffragettesfollowed,andtheycarriedplacardsbearingverycomicalexpressions.Anothergoodpartoftheprocessionwasthe"WiteHorstrailier DreadNort."whichconsistedofa boatmadeofcalico,withalook-out andasmallcannoninit,allof whichweremountedonalorry.

The"North-Westcattle-stealers," formedanotherpartoftheprocession.Theywereallattachedtoa longchain,andguardedbyafullyarmedPoliceman,whowasfollowed by.anoldblackwomanlamentingoverherhusband,whowasoneofthe Prisoners.Shehadalargeplacard onherbackbearingthewords:"Dirtymanpolicemantotakemy Billy."Whentheprocessionarrived attheRecreationground.Admiral Neavesofthe"Dreadnort"received aboxof"Beecham's,Pills"forfirst prize.

Averyamusingfootballmatchfollowed,whichlasteduntilalog-chop wasannounced.Theaxeswereeo rustyandbluntthatsomeofthe competitorswereobligedtousehoes. Theinterviewwhichwehadwith Mr.RyanoftheSydney"Catholic' Press,"andwhichwePublishinthis issueofthe"Record,"containsinteresting,instructive,andwelcome newsforourreaders.Irishmen, Irishwomen,andIrishAustralians, willhedelightedtoknowonsuch goodauthority,thatIreland'slong darknightofsufferingandsorrow hasPaned,thatthedawnhasarrivedatOast,thatthesunoffreedom isrisingtogildthehilltorsofthe oldgreenIsle,andthatthedayhas arrivedforthethoroughEmancipationofourkithandkininthedear homeland.

AHARDFIGHT. Itwasastruggleagainstterrible oddsalmosteverythingthatthis worldlooksuponasessentialfor victorywasabsent.Might was strong,mightwastyrannical,might wasprejudiced,andmighttriedto crushtheveryexistenceoutofCatholicIreland.TheLondon"Times" couldnotconcealitsjoywhenit sawtheIrishperishingwithfamine, orborneawayonthewavesofemigration:-"Inashorttime,"sail the"Times,"inaleadingarticle, "aCatholicCeltwillbeasrarein thebanksoftheShannonasafled IndianontheshoresofManhattan." The"Times"wasdoomedtodisappointment,notwithstandingthefact thatitconsistentlysupported,by platitudinarianprejudiceandmust uncharitablemisrepresentation,the menandthepartiesthatmetthedemandsoftheIrishwithdenial,contempt,insult,andinjure.Butthe criesofthe"Times"ceasedtobe thebe-allandtheend-allofpublic opinioninEngland.Englishstatesmensuspectedthattherewassomethingwrong;theywenttoIreland themselvesandtheyfoundoutthat Ireland'sdemandswerejustthat(ia thewordsofDavis),"Irelandaid notwantagamblingfortunemade atImperialplaybutthepiousand sterncultivationofherfacultiesand hervirtues,theacquisitionoffaithfulandenacthabits,andtheselfrespectthatrewardsadutifuland sincerelife."Togetherpeasants intosnughomesteads,withwelltilledfields,andplacidhearths,todeveloptheingenuityofherartistsand thedocileindustryofherartisans, togainconsciousstrengthandintegrityandthehighpostofHolyFreedom-these,theyfound,wereleeland'shighaspirationsandjustdemands.

Mr.Ryanisamanofabilityand ofverykeenobservation.Hisisno superficialorshallowknowledgepickedupatrandom,orguessedatin hotelsandclubshehasbeen throughtherealIreland,andhe seemstoheimbuedwiththetrue spiritofthemostearnestandthe mostmodernIrishIrelander.Heis noextremestbutheisacalm, cool.andintelligentstudentofcontemporary.historyandPolitics.This isthemanwhosewordcanberelied on,whoseviewsaresound,andwhose opinionsarewellfounded.And,this isthemanwhohasbroughtusthe mostwelcomenewsthatwehavereceivedformanyalongday.lie lovestospeakofIreland,andoneef hismostardentdesiresisthatpeoplemayknowthehonesttruthabout IrelandandtheIrish.

IrelandtrodthePathofthorns, climbedthemountainsofsnifering, crossedthestreamsofhermartyred children'sbloodandtears,butclingingtotheCrossofChrist,andbearingaloftthebannerofSt.Patrick, shehasneverwaveredinheronward march,and,thankGod,shehasnow reachedthegatesofvictory. Strugglingsonsofgiantfreemen, Fetteredchildrenofthefree WithyourPatrick'sbannero'er you, Cantheyaskyou:-'Areye free?" Irelandisprogressiveto-day,Irelandprospers.Irelandisalmost freeineverysenseoftheword.The -causeofFaithandFatherlandis stillthesolidfoundationofevery phaseoftheNationalmovementin Ireland.

InarecentPontificalLetteraddressedtotheHierarchyofBrazil, SouthAmerica,HisHoliness,Pope PiusXlaidmuchstressontheimportanceofawell:-editedandefficient Catholicpress,asameansoffosteringandpromotingsolidarityofsocial activityamongCatholicsunderthe aegisanddirectionoftheChurch.He says:

"ThemanageristheRightReverendBishopClune.Thenumberon theGovernmentlistonJune30, 191o,wasonehundredandtwo. Therewereadmittedduringtheyear endedJune3o,1911,thirty;and seventeenleftduringthesamePeriod. ThenumberremainingontheGovernmentlistonJune3o,191rwas onehundredandfifteen,andonthe privatelistthirty.Theorphanage ismanagedbytheSistersofMercy, theresponsibleheadbeingtheReverendtheMotherSuperior,SisterM. Theoralexaminationsinspelling supportedthehighmarkobtainedin thewrittentest.Theoralsubjects werenotassatisfactoryastn.written,andtheSistersshouldgiveearnestattentiontothese.Thereis noreasonwhythesesubjectsshould fallbehindthewritteninefficiency. TheChiefInspector ofschools(Mr.Walton),reportsas regardstheeducationofthelads asfollowsTheaccommodation hasbeenmuchimprovedbytheseparationoftheinfantsfromStandard I.andII..andb.%theprovisionof suitabledualdesksfortheyounger children.Itispleasingtoseethat thesuggestionsmadeinthereport oflastyear,andwhichinvolvedconsiderableexpense,havereceivedso readyandcompletearesponse.The boyspassedasatisfactoryexamination,especiallyinthelowerclasses, wheretheimprovementonprevious yearsisverymarked.Muchattentionhasbeengiventotheyoungest bo;s,andtheyarenowtaught 1) suitableandmodernmethods.I wouldagaincallattentiontothe highaverageagesoftheboysinthe

Theparochialclergymightmakeit theirbusinesstoknowwhatnewspapersandperiodicalscirculateamongtheirpeople.IftheyfindexposedforsalebytheCatholicnewsagentsorbooksellersoftheirparishes distinctlyobjectionablepublications, theyshouldendeavourprudentlyand privately,byfriendlyrepresentations tobothsellersandcustomers,to repressthesaleofsuchliterature.
