Passesoverobjectionsasachaste mindPassesoverwhatiscoarseor impure.Shemoreeasilyfindscomplacencyinherappearanceandsurroundings,butshehaslessprideand conceitthanman. Sheismore gratefal,too,becauseshelovesmore, andtheheartmakesmemorytrue. Whetherthereisaquestion ofmanorwoman,theaimandend ofeducationistobringforthinthe individualthedivineimageofhumanityasitexistsinthethoiiehtof God,asitisrevealedinthe Ohrist.Totrainagirlchieflywith aviewtosuccessinsocietyis prevent,istohinderfromattaining tothePoweroffree,'rich,andvariedlife.Itistoneglecteducatioi firaccomqishmentsitistoPreferformtosubstance,mannerto conduct,gracefulcarriaaeanddress tothoughtandlove.Wedearfale herwhenweconsiderheraslittle elsethanasacandidateformatrimony. "BEWAREOFFALSEPROPHETS.''-We may welltake thesewordsofwarningfrom OurBlessedLord,asapplyingverymuchinourownday. Ofcoursethewordprophetasused heremeansnotonlythosewhoforetell,butthosewhoteachorspeak, andasIsaidabove,wehaveespecialneedtobeonourguardagainst such.Inthefirstplacetherehas neverbeenatime%,henthesubjectof religionwasmoretalkedofthanit isto-day..Itisatruismtosaythere wasneversuchprintingofbooks, papers,etc.,astoday.Allthese havetheirauthors,theirteachers, andmanyofthemhavetodowith religion.Butunfortunately.thepart theytakeisnotinbehalfofreligion ,butagainstit.Itisbuttooevident thatthePowerofthedevilisworkingthroughtheprintingpressto destroyreligionandmakingefforts suchaswerenevermadetodestroy theChurch. Itisnot,indeed,thatbooksopenlyattackingtheChurchdothegreatestharm.No,itisrather the newspapers,magazinesandbooksthat treatreligionandespeciallythec.'atholicasifitwereapitiableobject, asomethingleftoverfromthe calleddarkagesandthatmustbe humouredforawhiletillitdisappears.SuchaPaperorhookmay atfirstprofessakindofrespectfor whattheCatholicChurchhasdone, butereitfinishesitshowsthatell thishasbeenforthepurposeofleadingCatholicson,endthatpeoplecane beverygoodandhappyandhavea muchbettertimeherewithoutreligionthanwithit.Thewritersof suchpapersandboasareindeedraveningwolvesundertheguisecf sheep.Andwhatmakestheoutlook darkeristhatitissohardtoget Catholicstobelievethatsuchisthe case.Toomany..ofourpeopleare beginningtothinkthattheyhavea righttoreadjustwhattheyplease andtoresentasaninterference

theirbeingtoldwhatnottoread. HowmanyaretherewhocallthemselvesCatholicsandwhosaythey can'tseehowitissoMuchfussis madeaboutreligion.Fromthat stateofmindtotheotheronethat aPerson'sreligionishisownPrivateaffair,isbutashortstep,and notmuchfurtheristhestepwhere theysaythatafterallitdoesn't seemsomuchwhatapersonbelieves ifhedoesright.Thatiswherethe falseprophetswouldleadpeorle,and thatiswheremanyarebeingled, anditisevidentinthegreatnumberofpeoplewhoneitherdoright norbelieveright.

Tolightagainstsuchfalseprophets andagainstfalseteachersandtheirreligiousliteratureofthedayougnt tobethedutyofeveryloyalCatholic,andthebestwaytodothatis toencouragebyallmeansCatholic literature,tosubscribeforCatholic papersandmagazines,andthereby makeitpossibleforthosewhomanagesuchtogetthebestCatholic, writingthatcanbeobtained.

IftheChristianemployerhasabundantwealthheknowsthatitisa trust,thathehastohelpthepoor. andtorenderanaccountthereofto thecommonMaster.Indistributing anyofthewealthinaccordancewith Christianprinciples,whobasmore claimaftertheemployer'sownfamily,thanthosebywhoselabourhe acquiresthewealth? Allhonourto thosewhodistributetheirwealthto hospitals,orphanages,andpublicinstitutions,buttheglowistakenfrom thewarmthoftheircharityifthey havelefttheirownworkmenneedy. Havetheynotapriorclaim?Some portionofthemoneywouldbemore equitablyexpendedovertheirworkmen'shomesandsurroundings,in Providingfortheirimprovementin bodyandmind,insecuringcomforts foroldageandfailinghealth,in procuringsuitablerecreation ar,d amusement.NorwillaChristianemployerconfinehiscareforhisworkmentotheactualtimeofwork.If hecherishesafeelingofsympathy forthem,andtreatsthemasbrothers,hewillbeinterestedintheir surroundings,theirrecreations,their homes,theirfamilies,therearingof theirchildren.Manyopportunities willbeseizedforshowingoutsidethe workthoselittleattentionsandkindnessesthatknitfriendsandbrothers together.Insickness.hewill he tenderlysolicitousbypersonalinquiryandattentionsinsorrowhe willmaketheworkmenfeelthat theyhaveinhimatruefriend.

FatherForner,O.M.I.,leftthelatter' stationtoreturntohismission. some35mileswestwardfromit.Be hadhishorseandsledge.Thecold wasintense.Hewasduetosay Massatoneofhisfourstationson theSunday.Hedidfifteenmileson theWednesday.OntheThursdayhe travelledsixmileswheretherewas atrack,andsixmoreacrossanoper1 snow-cladPrairieextending100miles fromeasttowest.Heleft the houseoftwo?oungSwissatone o'clock,havingpartakenofthenest theyhadtogivehim,whichwas somesaltsoupandsomecoffee.M. fourp.m.hereachedthehouseofa RussianwhowasaCatholic. Theseverityofthestormprevented anyearlystartbeingmadebutat eighto'clockontheFridaymorning, FatherFortierfeltthattoremain longerundersuchconditionsofcold andmiserywouldbefatal. The stormwasstillatitsheight,and thewaylay overavasttreeless erairie.Ato'clockthepoormissionarywassoexhaustedthathe longedforsomeshelterbutbawas lostonatracklessprairieandnene offered.At6P.m.oncemorethe horsecametoafull-stop.Thesituationbrokethegoodpriest'sspirit. andtearsstartedfromhiseyes.He wouldhavetospendanothernight onthesnow-covereddesertprairie, famishedandwithoutfoodorshelter. OwemoreFatherFornerproceeded,nowgoingsouthwards.Heescendedamountainwhichwasatsome distance,andfromitssummithesaw AlbertalyingtotheWest.lierecognisedEyeHillCreek,whichwas inthedirectionofhismissionstations.Joynowtookpossessionof hisspiritbutthewasingreatsuffering,andhisweaknesshourlybecamesuchthathewasafraid be wouldfaint,andfallfromhissledge. Twohoursmoreofdifficulttravel broughthimtothehouseofMr. WilliamScott,aPresbyterian.This goodmanandhisfamilyreceived him,mostcordially,FatherForner wasseverelyfrost-bitten.Thepalms ofhishands,onetoe,'hischin,nose, androundhiseyeswerethepartsaffected,andthesebythefollowing dayhadbecomeblackorbrown.His feetescapedbeingfrozen.

"TheDecayoftheSocialSense," wasdiscussedbytheCatholicSocial Guild,attheNewcastleCatholic Congress.Dr.A.P.Mooney,Presto',definedthesocialsenseastee serviceoftheindividualtoSociety anditsmembers.Itwas,hesaid, thedirectproductofChristianity, anditsdecaydatedfromthebreakupofChristianityfollowingon "TheReformation."

To-day,saidDr.Mooney,thetwo ideals,thoseofCatholicityandSocialism.werestrugglingforsupremacy.Socialismsoughttore-establish therelationsofjusticebetweenthe membersofthecommunitybyestablishingcommunalownershipofthe meansofproduction.TheCatholic Schoolalsosoughttoreturntoa corporateideaofsocialorganisation, butlookedforitsinspirationtothe idealsofjusticeandcharity.Socialisminitsrevoltagainstindividualism,wouldimposefettersonthe individualthatmustsubordinatehim toogreatlytothecommunity.The Catholicidealsoughttoenlargethe privilegeoftheindividualbymaking theorganisationofthecommunity' subservienttolegitimateneedsand thedignityoftheindividual. Socialisni,hedeclared,hadnohigher motivetoappealtoforthedevelop-

Mr.B.W.DevassaidthatifCatholicsdidnot,asarule,avow themselvesasSocialistsitwasonly becauseSocialism-atermofnotoriousambiguity-wasundertheban oftheChurch.Itwouldbeidleto denythatthereweremanydevout Catholicswhowereattracted by Collectivistideals,andonlyrefrained fromjoiningSocialistSocietieson accountoftheirloyaltytothe Church.

Therealtrouble,fromtheCatholic..poptofview,hesaidwasnot theidealofcivicwell-beingwhich wasproposedfortheiracceptance, 'butthewildernessofirreligionwhereinthe"NewJerusalems"ofSocialistreformerswerebuilt. What theyhadtodowastoshowconcretelythatlifeandreligioncould notbedivorcedtoencourageCatholicstostudysocialquestionsand toconsiderhowtoturninterestis socialProblemstotheserviceofreligion.

ForcloseonfifteenyearsMr. JamesCollinswastheconfidential secretaryofIsaacButt,andhad excellentopportunitiesofbecoming closelyacquaintedwitheveryphase ofthegreatTribune'scharacter.In thecurrentnumberofthe"Dublin andIrishSummerMagazine,"tne placeofhonourisgiventoanextremelyinterestingarticleonButt layMr.Collins,underthetitle,"ReminiscencesofaGreatTribune."We reproducesomeextractsfromthe,articlewhich,wearesure,willbefull ofinterestforourreaders,asButt wasundoubtedlyoneofthemost lovablecharactersassociatedwith politicalmovementsinthiscountry, andMr.Collinsgivesusglimpsesof himsuchasnootherbiographerwas inapositiontogive. Inhisstudyhewoulduseonly candlesknownasWaxTwo's'-two tothepound.Heusedoneofthe candlesforthepurposeofstudying, andtheotherwasgenerallyutilised tolightthetire.Mr.Buttusedto dyehishair,andononeoccasion, whengoingtoadinnerhesentfora hairdresserwholivedinMolesworthstreet.Thisartistleftanumberof bottleswithMr.Butt,sothathe couldusethemhimselfifthehairdresserwasnotavailable.I rememberoneevening,whenMr.Butt wastoattendasocialfunctionbeingaskedtotaketheplaceofthe hairdresser,whocouldnotbefound. Ioperatedonhisheadwithtwobottlesoffluid,whichhehadhandedto me,andwhenMr.Buttstoodupand lookedintheglasshefoundthathe waswearing-greenhair! That wasthebeginningandtheendofmy careerasaprivatehairdresser.

"Foranorthodox.Protestant,Mr. ButtindulgedinanumberofCqptholiepractices.Onthedeskinhis studyhekeptasmallcross,which wasbroughtfromJerusalembythe lateJohnAloysiusBlake,M.l'.,and bythesideofthecrosswasalways,_, placedalittlebook,whichhegreatlytreasured,andused,entitled, THEGLORIESOFMARY,' whichvolumeIhaveandcountpmongstmytreasures.Ioftenheard himwhenreadingthebook,express inthemostendearingtoneshisvenerationfortheMotherofGod.Hecarriedwitnhiminalittlepocket-book threemedals,knowntoCatholicsas miraculousmedals.Imayaddthat themedalswereplacedbyhiminthe coatwhichheworewhilepractising attheliar,andwhenthetermsclosedandthecoatwasnolongerinuse, thelittlepocket-bookwastaken awayandPutinthefrockcoat, whichhegenerallywore.Afterhis death,andwhenhewaslyinginhis coffin,Ihappenedtocomeacrossthe Pocket-bookcontainingthemedals, andrememberinghowfondlyhewas attachedtotheminlife,Ithought itonlyrightthatthey,shouldremainwithhimin'death. 1placed thelittlemoroccocasketcontaining themedalsunderhishead,andthey wereinterredwithhimatStranorlar.WhenengagedinbigcasesButt wouldarrange,throughafriend,for aMasstobesaidtoassisthttoin hisadvocacy.Thisfriend,whois sincedead,usedalsototakecontributionsfromMr.Butttoaconvent nearthecityforthepurposeofdecoratingandilluminatinganaltarof PerpetualAdorationtotheBlessed Sacrament,Ashorttimebeforehis deathhe1pdarrangedtogoto MountMelferyandtooccupythe roominwhichO'Connelllivedduring hisstayatthefamousTrappist monastery.Allthearrangementsin connectionwiththevisitweremade bythelateMr.Croshie,of the 'CorkKxaminer;butwhenthey hadbeensettledMr.Butthadunfortunatelybeenstruckdown thefatalillnesswhichbroughthisgreat careertoaclose."

Mr.CollinsgivesanumberofinterestinginstancesofButt'simprovidenceandgenerosityandhiseffortstokeephisservantsfromoverindulginginstrongdrink.Onestoryinreferencetotheservantsistoo goodtobeomitted.HegotFather Meehantospeaktohiscook,Fanny, abouttakingthepledge. Fanny assertedthatshewasatotalabstainer,butsaidthatasthepriest wasinthehouse(now64Eccles-St.) andinorderthathemightnot wastehisjourney',hemightgivethe pledgeto-hermaster.Thisbroke uptheconference."

aregiven,includingpassagesfroman eloquentinauguraladdresson"Oratory,"deliveredwhenayoungman attheCollegeHistoricalSocietyin 1834,andhiegreatspeechatthe HomeRuleConferencein'873.The followingistheconclusionof the article:-

"Ishallneverforgetthelastsad journeyincompanywithDr.O'Leary,M.P.,PhilipCallan,M.P.,A..1. Kettle,RichardPigott,theforger, andsomemembersofMr.Butt'sfamily,tothelonelychurchyardat Stranorlar(whereMr.Buttwasburied).WewenttotheChurchattachedtothegraveyard.Itwasthena brightsunnyday.Onarrivingat thegravesidewefoundthatthere wasaslightdeparturefrom the wishesoftheGrandOldMan'-viz, thesidesofthegravewerebricked therewasnoearthinthe'grave. Whatwastobedone? Afterconsultationit'wasdecidedtofillthe gravewithearth,allowingsufficient spaceforthecoffintorestin.The coffinwastakenbackintothechurch. TheyhadthereMr.Molloy,Mayor ofPerth,atrue-heartedIrishman, andatthesametimeapatriotic WesternAustralian.TheSpeakerof theirAssemblywasanIrishman,'vhf wasatpresenthavingtwoorthree ofhissonseducatedinIreland.So farastheirowncityofPerthvas concerned,theywerevery.muchinterestedinIrelandandtheIrishpeople.Theywereonly,comparatively speaking,ayongcommunity. As amatteroffactthatColonywas foundedir.1829,butitwasnot until189o,whenresponsibleGovernmentorHomeRulewasgiventhem, thattheybegantomakeanyprogress.Fromthattimetheyhad beengoingforwardbyleapsand bounds.Thepopulationthenwas 46thousand;nowitis290thousand. Therevenuethenwas)nly 400thousandpoundsnowitis£3,600,000sotheycouldseetherttraordinaryprogressWesternAustra liahadmadeunderselfgovernment inthemeantime.SirNewtonthen gavedetailsoftheprogressofthe country,thebenefitsthataccruedto State-ownedrailways,andthecountry'sproductivepower,andsaidthat. uptonowCanadahaddrawnpracticallytentooneinthewayofemigrantsfromtheUnitedKingdom. TheywereanxioustopopulateAustraliawithwhitepeople,andwhile theydidnotaskpeoplewhowere doingwellathon5etoleavetheir Own.country,yettheywishedthat thosevrhowouldmakeuptheirminds

greatIrishmanandagreatloverof hiscountry.

Thedistinguishedvisitorswere subsequentlyshownaroundthecivic buildingsandCarnegieLibrary by theLordMayorandtheothergentlemenassociatedwithhim,andSir NewtonMooresubsequentlyentertainedtheLordMayor,MessrsSargent,D.M'Donnell,LL.D.,andC. J.DunntoluncheonattheImperial Hotel.

TheCorkCorporationhavepassed aresolutionofregretonthedeathof thelateCardinalMoran,whowasa freemanofthecity,onthemotion ofMr.Fleming,secondedbyMr.J. F.O'Sullivan.

Mr.C.J.Dunnsaiditgavehim greatpleasuretotakepartinthat welcometothedelegatesfromWesternAustralia.Hewasverymuch struckwiththestatisticsgivenby SirNewtonMooreandMr.Molloy, anditwasastrikingandsomewhat sadcomparisonwiththeretrograde MovementinIrelandduring tne sameperiod.In1841theirpopulationinIrelandhadbeen8,147,00o, andthishadbeengreatlyincreased in1846,butatPresentthepopulationinIrelandwaslessthanhalf whatitwasin1846,whilenotonly theColoniesbutallEuropeancountrieshadalmostdoubledtheirpopulationinthattime.

"Unitedwestand,divided we fall;"-itwouldhedifficulttofind moresuitablesubjectsforthese wordsthanthevariousStatesof theAustralianCommonwealth.Hitherto,asfarasWesternAustraliais concerned,Federationwaslittlemore thananameforanunwieldyand netveryfriendlyunion. West Australiawastreatedasthedistant relationoftheEasternStates,and WestAustraliansretaliatedbyloos- ingwithacertainamountofLasdainfulsuspiciononthedrought- scourged"t'other-siders"whocame heretomaketheirfortunes. And marsofthemsucceededtoo,andin somecasesthesuccesswasphenom-enal.FamiliesintheEastweresun- ported,andarebeingsupportedat present,bymoneyearnedinthe much-despised,unfairlytreated,and sandylandof"Groperdom."

Hecameofafamilywhichnumbered amongitsmembersdistinguished Churchmenandcivilians,amongthemBishopDavidRoth,ofSt.Canice's, whowasabrotherofEdwardRoth, whobuilttheRoth.mansioninPar- liamentstreet,Kilkenny,in1594,a perfectsPecin-enofthearchitecture oftheperiod.TheBishopwasPro- nouncedbyDr.Johnson,oftheIrish l'rotestantChurch,tohethemost diligentinvestigatoroftheantiqui- tiesofhisnativeland.Edward David,andMichaelRothwereAldermenoftheremodelledCorporation of1687.Thelast-namedandhis son,Edward,ComtedeRoth,were distinguishedmilitary.commandersin Irelandfrom1686tor;66.
