Salt-cellarsmaybesaidtohave beeninuseinprehistorictimes.Homerdeclaredthatsaltwasagiftof thegods.TheGreeksandRomans gavethesaltcellartheplaceofhonourattheirbanquets,andeveryeffortofcraftsmenwasemployedto makeitan°Wetofbeauty.Saltcellarswereoftenheirlooms,handed downwithgreatcarefrom'fatherto son. DuringtheMiddleAgesthe salt-cellarwasthefinestandmost conspicuousobjectonthetable,and wasplacedinthecentre-themembersofthefamily occupyingseatsatoneend,theservantsandretainerssittingat the other. Thisishowthephrase"to sitbelowthesalt"cametomean, "tooccupyaninferiorposition." Wealthypeopleusedsalt-cellarsmade ofgoldandsilveranddesignedby greatartists.Manyofthesehave beenpreservedtothisday,andare treasuredinmuseums.Poorpeople however, werecontentwithmore humblereceptaclesfortheusefulcondiment,andoftenusedaPiece of breadwithaplacehollowedoutto serveesasalt-cellar.

Thetaskofputtingawayone's wintergarments,especiallythewoollens,isnosimpleone,esPeciallyif thefamilyconsistsofgrowingchildren.Howevertheveryfactthatthe childrenaregrowinggivesthewife andmotheranopportunitytogiveto otherssomeofthegarmentswhich havebeendoingserviceduringthe coldweather.Itiswelltolook overthegarmentswiththeideaof seeingwhatonescannotbewornanotheryear,eitherbecausetheyare wornorbecausetheyareoutgrown iftheyareoutgrownfindsomeworthpersontowhomthesearticlesof clothingwillbeofgreatbenefit.On theotherhandiftoobadlywornto berepaired,castthemasideatonce. TheCatholicBoys'Brigadeisa purelyCatholicorganisationCatholicfromheadtoheelitspurposeis tosafeguardtheFaithofourboys, after,orwhentheyleaveschon., fromtheageofthirteentonineteen yearstoholdthemtogether,tohelp themtofightthemanyfoesassailing themwithoutandwithininthevery crisisoftheirexistence,thetime mostfraughtwithdangertofaith andmyrals.OtherendsandpurposestheBrigadehasinview,butall thesefadeawayintoinsignificancein comparisonwiththegreatandsacral purposewhicaistheforewordofoar Constitution,"Tosafeguardtae Faithofourboyswhentheyleave school."

Iwishtoinsistuponthisfact,fur inspiteofstrenuouseffortonour part,numbersofpersonsstillmisunderstandand,unwittingly,no doubt,misrepresenttheobjectofthe Brigade.Ifreelygrantthatthe meansweemploytoattract,hold, andgovernourboysreadilylend themselvestomisunderstanding,but weconsiderthat,afterexplanation andprotest,oftenvehement,for morethantenyearsbyourchaplains andofficers,thismisunderstanding andmisrepresentationshouldcease. Thetimehascome,wethink,for thisdefamationtofollowTyndall's cloudintotheinfiniteazureofthe Pa conditionsunderwhichour The st. boysliveinthecitiesandlarge townsdifferwidelyfromthosethat existinCatholiccountriesabroad, andeveninourownlandsomesixty yearsago. Theatmosphereisfar morefranklypagantheheritageof thesupernaturalintowhichthepeoPlecameattheepochofthegreat defectionthreehundredandfifty yearsagohaspeteredout,and

UNSECTARIAXEDUCATION, whichis,ofcourse,themostbitterlysectarian,hasproducedalreadya classwhichishavingapernicious effectuponallwhocomewithinits compassandinfluence.Sosoonas ourboysleavethey'areforcedto comeintocontactwiththisclassin factory,workshop,warehouse-whereverindeed,theygotoearnalivelihood.Thesearethefoeswhichassailaboyfromwithoutnowa wordaboutthefoesthatassailhim fromwithin.Itwillnotbedisputed Itakeit,thatfromthirteentotwenty'yearsofagearethemostcritical rearsinourlife-timeforitisthe ageinwhichgoodorbadhabitsare formed.Here,then,isthesituation whichconfrontsallzealouspriests to-day,especiallyinlargecentresof population.Withheroicself-sacriace,withagenerosityanddeterminationthathasexcitedtheadmiration' evenofenemies,theCatholicsof thiscountryhavesecuredtheChristianeducationoftheirchildrenand

beatenbacktherepeatedattacksde liveredagainsttheirschools.Isall thissplendidachievementtobeof no,oratbestoflittleavail?Let ustakethecaseof ALARGECITYSCHOOLOFauo CHILDREN, boysandgirls.Letussaythat somesixtyoftheseleaveschoolany yearandgooutintowhatweCatholicscalltheworld,thatbadworld, withitsmaximsandprinciplesdiametricallyopposedtothelaw of Christ.Weneednotentertainany veryseriousanxietyaboutourgirls. Theseareusuallywelllookedafter bythegoodnunsandgatheredinto thesodalitiesoftheChildren of Mary.Butourboys-whatisdone tohelpthem?Hereandtherewe haveaboys'cluborasodality'(Speciallyintendedforboys,andthese doexcellentwork.Insmallparishes andindistriCtswherethenumberof Catholicboysisnotgreataclub nodoubtveryoftenieabetterway, havingregardtothecircumstances ofhelpingboys,thantheBrigade. Thus, iftheleastopeningofthewayto divorcetendsofitsownnatureto multiplycasesofdivorce,andto createadispositiontobringthem about,then,surelytheremusthe somethingindivorceessentiallyhostiletomarriage;or,inotherwords divorcemust,inconcretepracticeat least,beinherentlywrong. Ifthis argumentfallsshortofdemonstration,itshowsatleastthattheprincipleofindissolubilityisfullyconsonantwiththenatureofmarriage, whiledivorceisaltogetherdissonant fromit.

TheChristianconceptionofmarriageinthisparticularisembodiedin themarriageformula "Until deathusdopart."Therevisedversionmustnowhe "Untildeath ORTHEDIVORCECOURTdous part."Theabsoluteindissolubility ofmarriageiscertainlyatruth whichunaidedreasonmightfailto discover.Thatthebondshouldto normallyapermanentoneisperfectlyclearthatitcarundernocircumstancesbedissolvedisnotso clear. Nay,thefactthatdivorce wasallowed-thoughgrudgingly-in theMosaiclawshowsthatmarriage isnot,intheessentialnature of things,indissoluble. The full strengthofourcasethereforerests ontheDivinepositivelaw,especiallyaspromulgatedintheNewTestament-thegeneralteachingofwhich withtheexceptionofonepuzzling clause,isunmistakable,andhasthe unequivocalsupportofthetradition oftheCatholic('hurch.Itisthe Partialortotallossofbeliefin thistraditionwhichliesattheroot ofthemodernmischief.

Thepleasinfavourofdivorce,are, itmustbeconfessed,extremely strong."Marriage,itcanheargued,is,afterall,ahumanact,and every.humanactisliabletoerr.It isanactfraughtwithbearingon thewholeoflife,andwhoisthere foreseeingenoughtocommithimself irrevocablyforlifetoarathingat all? Marriageisirgreatpartan experimentwiththeunknown,andis itnotaltogethertoohard,isitfict unreasonable,formentobindthemselvestoaraexperimentwhich,on maturerexperience,mayprovea grievousmistake Grantingthat marriageistobenormallyundertakenasalifelongbond,surelyat leastthereoughttobesomewaycf avertingdisaster.Maketheconditionsfordivorceasstringentasyou liken-aketheverificationofthese conditionsassearchingasmaybe necessarytopreventabuse.Butdo atleastleaveanultimateloophole ofescapewhenithasbeenconclusivelyprovedthatagivenmarriage isnotonlyafailure,butablunder andacalamityandaltogetherfatal toPeaceandhappinessforlife."

Evenifdivorcewereallowed by theDivinelaw,itwouldstillneed tobecloselyrestrictedbytheseverestconditionsandeventhenwould beliabletogreatabuse.Nothing exercisessopowerfulandwide-reachingacontrolonthehumanmindas therecognitionoftheinevitable.let theoldformula,"untildeathdous part,"beonceacceptedwithout question,andthenperseveranceinthe marriagebondbecomesamatterof course.Theideaofseparationsimplesinksoutsidethehorizonofthe mind,andamarriedcouple,whatevertheircircumstances,aillhedriven tosettledownandmakethebestof thesituation.Onceintroducethe ideathatmarriageis,undercertain conditions,soluble,andwherevercon, fugalfelicityfails,themindwillimmediatelybegintocontemplatethe Possibilityofsolution,erdffrom tryingtomendmatters,willbetemptedrathertoletthemgofrombad toworse,andeventomakethem worseinorderthattheconditionsof separationma\bereechea.Thus, toputtheworsecase-supposeadulteryistheonePleaenderwhichdivorcecanheurged,itlieseasilyin thepowerofeitherpartytocommit adultery,andthussecurethedesired end.Andifthetemptationgrows strong,thisiswhatwillProbably happen.If-togototheotherex-

THEPROCEDUREOFTHE CHURCH.

Inexorablelogicsoonforcesfurther developments.Ifmarriagecanbe dissolvedforspecifiedreasons,this Provesconclusivelythatmarriagein itselfisarescindablecontract,which canremainpermanentatoption,but whichisnotofitsownnaturepermanent.Somewritershavecandidly facedthisissue,andadvocatedaradicalchangeoftheconceptionofmar, riagefromapermanentandtnexorableintoatemporaryandoptional bond."Letus,theysay,boldlyrecognisemarriageasaprovisionalagreementtolivetogetherasmanand wife,tillsuchtimeasbymutual consentwefeeldisposedtobreakoff theengagement.Letmentaketheir wivesastheetakeapartments,so thateitherpartycangivetheother amonth'sorear'snoticetoquit. Thosewhowishtosecurelegaleffects must,ofcourse,registertheirmarriages,andthusfallundertherestraintsofthelawofdivorce.But supposesuchlegaleffectsarenot wishedfor. Supposethetwopartiesdesiretoremainfree.Inthat casewhyresorttothecivillawat all? Whynotmakesuchprivate arrangementsasarenowcustomary amongthemoresedatesectionofthe so-called'licentious,'merelyelevatingthemistresstothedignityofa wifeforthetimebeing,andletsocietymodifyitsideas,andadmitthe respectability'aridblamelessnessof suchconventions."Thisis,inshort theideaof"freelove"inanorganisedform,inwhichclearlythewhole ideaofmarriagehasgone.Andthe worstofallis,noonecandeny thelogic,whenoncethesolubility ofmarriagebydivorcehasbeenallowed.

Underthepressureofsuchplausibilities,theunbelievingworldhasgivenwayaltogether.Thesectstoo aregraduallyfollowingsuit.They nibbleatdivorce,conniveatit,nevergetbeyondregrettingthenecessityofit,orwishingittooccuras seldomasPossible.OnlytheCatholicChurchremains.Andifsheis stillaPowerfulmainstayofthetraditionalidealofmarriage,thisisonlyforherownmembers.Tothe outsider,hersisavoicecrying"Makestraightthewayofthe Lord." Butwhatwiththesects doubtingwhatthewayoftheLord is,andtherestdoubtingwhether thereisanyLordatall,hervoice isthatofonecryinginthewilderness,withnoresponsebutafaint echofromthebarrenrocksaround.

THEDuWNWARDGRADE.

Whenoncedivorcehasbecomea matteroflaw,theinevitabletendencyistomakeitmoreeasy and morefrequent,byincreasingthenrcnherofPleasunderwhichitmaybe granted. Firstcomesadultery whichisaformalbreachofthemarriagecontract,andadirectoutrage ofitsrights.Nextill-treatmentand bodilyabusethendrunkenness,or intolerabletemperthendesertion orneglectofmaintenancetheniliability,throughsicknessorotherwise, torendertheduesofmarriagee.then inabilitytogenerateafamilyand finally',incompatibilityoftemperament,orwantofaereementandsiePathe-inaimsandinterests.Inthe

Lookingatthematterfromthe view-pointoftheology,theabsolute indissolubilityofmarriageissoessentialthatnocontractisa true marriagewithoutit.Awedding conductedundertheformula,"Until deathoRTHEDIVORCECOURTdo usPart,"would,intheeyesofthe Church,benomarriageatall.For therebythematterofassentisa rescindablebond,wherasmarriageis essentiallyanirrescindablebond.It isnotnecessary,thatpeopleshould exPressl,contemplatetheideaofmakinguseofdivorce.Theymay1.e fullyconvincedthattheirunionwill bePerseveredinforlife.Themere acceptanceofthefactthatmarriage isrescindablethroughdivorceisenoughtoinvalidateit.

Theconsequencesaresomewhat startling. Ifweregardtheindissolubilityofmarriageasexpressing theDivineLawforthehumanrace; ifwemaintainthatDivorcecanonly bevalidundertheexpressdispensationofGodHimself-asitwasinthe OldLaw-itthenfollowsthat,whereverdivorceexists,andisrecognised bythepeople,allmarriageswill cease,althoughtheirexternalaPPearancemayremain.Onthestrengthof God'srevealedword,wemaintain thatmarriageisstrictlyindissoluAe and,therefore,anythingwhichis conceivedasatemporaryorrescindablecontractisnotthemarriaee cor.tractatall,butisalegallyand

ThecaseissoPeculiarand .rareincivilisedlifethatitneednet occupymuchattention.Theprincipleunderlyingitisthattheformer marriagewasanaturalmarriage, whereasbaptismelevatesmarriage intoaSacrament.Andthechasm betweenthetwoorderspossessesa certain potentiality to dissolvethe contract.ButobservethisexceptionisnotoneoftheChurch'smakingbutcomestoherontheinspired authorityofSt.Paul.Itshows thattheindissolubilityofmarriage canbedispensedfrom.byGod.tne Authorofmarriage.Itdoesnot provethatitcanbedispensedfrom bymanapartfromtheDivine sanction.

(3)TheChurchsometimesdeclares thenullityofamarriagepublicly, andcivillysupposedtobevalid.In thiscasethe('hurchdoesnotgrant adissolutionofmarriage. She plainlydeclaresthatinspiteofout-

wardappearancesnomarriageever tookplace.Thetwopartieshave reallybeensingleallthetime,and nowtheChurchmerelydeclaresthem! single;andunlesstheywishnowto validatetheirsupposedmarriageby anewact,theynotonlymay mustseparate,andcanmarryelsewhere.

The"ChurchChronicle,"Brisbane, ofAugust I containsthefollowing articleonMixedMarriages,whichwe commendforitshonesty:Wemustconfesstohavebeennot alittlepuzzledbywhatseemstous theverycuriousattitudetakenup bymanypeopleoutsidetheRoman CommunionwithregardtothePope'srecently-promulgateddecreeonthe subjectofmixedmarriages. That decreedeclaresthat.theauthorities oftheRomanChurchdonotrecog- niseasvalidanymarriagecontractedbetweenamemberofthatChurch andamemberofsomeotherreligiouscommunit'unlesssuchmarriage hasbeencontractedinthepresence ofadulyqualifiedRomanCatholic Priest.Sucharegulationmaybe unwiseandevenmorallydangerous andinthehandsofanunscrupulous priestitmightersilybemadean instrumentofgreatoppressionandhardship.ButtherightoftheRomancatholicChurch,oranyother religiousbody,tomakesucharegu- lationissurelybeyondallquestion.Marriageisoneofthemostimport- antstepswhichamanorwoman takesinlife,andareligioussociety hasanunquestionedrighttosecure, sofarasitcan,thatitsmembers onlycontractmatrimonyundercircumstanceswhichinvolvetheknowledgeandsupervisionofthereligiousauthorities.Andifthisisthe casewithordinarymarriageubetween twomembersofthesamereligious society,itissurelystillmorethe casewhereoneofthepartnersto theproposedmarriageisregardedby theother'sChirchasbeingahere- ticwhoislivinginastateofthe mostseriousspiritualerror.That theChurchofRomeshouldsore- gardallwhodonotbelongtoher Communioniscertainlyregrettable; thatshedoessoregardthemisa simplefactwhichseemstousto makethe"NeTemere"decreea perfectlynaturalandlegitimatepart ofherinternaldiscipline.

Itmay,Perhaps,beailed,and notunnaturally,whyweshouldbe atpainstodefendtheactionsofa ChurchwhichweoftheChurchof Englandbelieveto"hayeerrednot onlyinlivingandmannerofceremonies,butalsoinmattersoffaith." (Articlexix.)Therearetworeasons.First,becausewewishto dissociateourselvesfrpmwhatseems tousthediscourtesyofattempting tointerferewiththeinternaldisciplineofanotherdenominati.n,and secondlybecausemanyofthereasons allegedincondemnationofthe"Ne Temere"decreewould,iftheywere admitted,condemnalsothemarriage lawsofourownChurchofEngland. Foritmustnotbeforgottenthat theChurchofEngland,likethe churchofRome,teachesquiteplainlythatamarriagema,beperfectly validintheeyesoftheState,hut invalidir,theeyesoftheChurch.At oneofthemoatsolemnmomentsof theEnglisliMarriageServicethe Priestsaystothecontractingparties Beyewellassuredthatso manyasarecoupledtogetherotherwisethanGod'sWorddothallow, arenotjoinedtogetherbyGod,neitheristheirmatrimony'lawful."

AndattheendofthePrayerbookis printedalistofmarriageswhichare "OtherwisethanGod'sWorddoth allow." Amongstthesemarriages ismarriagewithawife'ssister,a marriagewhichisrecognisedasperfectlyvalidbythecivilauthorities inEnglandandinAustralia. Or again,theChurchtakesupquitedefinitel:,thepositionthatmarriageis acontractdissolubleonlybydeath; buttheStateallowsitalsotobe dissolvedbyadecreeoftheDivorce Court. Hereagain,then,the Church'slawcomesintoconflictwith thelawoftheland.TheStateallowsapersonwhohasbeendivorced toenterintoanothermarriagecontract,whichtheStatewillregardas Perfectlyvalid.TheChurchonthe otherhandisboundbyherownprinciplestoregardanymarriagecontractenteredintobyadivorcedpersonasessentiallyinvalid.Weare notforthemomentconcernedtodefendeitheroftheserules-(thoughwe shouldbePreparedtodefendthem bothstrongly),allweareconcerned todonowistopointoutthatthe State'sviewandtheChurch'sview ofwhatconstitutesavalidmarriage bynomeansalwayscoindide.But what,afterall,doesthismean?It meansthatinthecaseofcertain marriagessanctionedbytheState, theChurchmayteachtheparties (asshedoes)thattheyhavenotbeen "joinedtogetherbyGod,neitheris theirmatrimonylawful"itmeans thatthe.Churchwillrefuseherblessingtosuchmarriagesanditmeans thattheChurchmaafurtherrefuse topartieswhohave contractedsuchmarriageswhateverreligiousprivilegesitisherstogive. Itmeansnomorethanthis,far thereisnothingmoreitcanmean.

TheChurchisnotsofoolishasto ignorethevaliditywhichthesemarriagespossessintheeyesofthe State,andshouldeitherofthecon- tractingpartiesattempttoignoreit (andthishasbeensuggestedesa possibleoutcomeofthe"NeTemere"decree),theywouldspeedilyfindarudeawakeninginthecivil lawcourts.Thesafe-guardingof themarriagecontractisanimpor- tantpartoftheState'sbusiness, anditisabusinesswhichtheState isquitecapableofmindingforitself.Andmeanwhilenoonecan seriouslyquestiontherightofany religiousbodytoframewhatmatrimonialregulationsitpleasesforthe guidanceofitsownmembers,and to-secureforthoseregulationswhatevermeasureofobedienceitcan,by meansofitsowninternaldiscipline, obtain. Wetrustthatthiswill cometoberecognised,andthatthe presentsomewhatfantasticclamour aboutthe"NeTemere"decreewill shortlycease.

Butweshallnothesorrythatthe controversyhasragedifitgrove to hayeawakenedourownPeopleto -theextremeundesirablenessofmixed marriages,especiallyincaseswhere thepersonmarriedisamemberofa

Churchwhosedisciplineisasstrict, asfat-reaching,andaseffectiveas thatoftheChurchofRome. To enteruponamarriagecontractwith thecertainknowledgethathusband andwifearelikelytobepermanently divideduponthemostfundamental thingsissurelytoriskthegravest disaster. Suchamixedmarriage meansthatoneofthreethingsisalmostbound.tohappenthesubject ofreligion,beingacontentiousone, willbedroppedforthesakeofdomesticpeace,andthehomewillbecome,practicallyanirreligiousone; orthecharacteristicbeliefsofhusbandandwifewillbe-dropped,again forthesakeofPeace,andthe,familywillgrowupinasortofflabby andfutileundenominationalism; or husbandandwifewilladhereloyally andstrictlytothetenetsoftheir resrectivedenominations,withthe resultcfapermanentriftinthefamilyuponthemostvitalofallsubjects. Anyoftheseresultsspells disasteranddestructiontothehighestobjectswhichHolyMatrimony existstopromote.Ahome,tofail itspurpose,mustbeareligious home,itsreligionmustbeadefinite one,withstrongChurchprinciplesof itsown,andfurthermore,itmustbe areligioninwhichhusbandand wifewhole-heartedlyagree.Ifanyofthesefactorsbeabsenttheinfluenceofthehomeasacharacter-ma- kingforceisinjured,ifitisnot totallydestroyed.AndiftheZispute aboutthe"NeTemere"decreeservestobringallthisunderthenoticeofourpeople,andtomakethem realisethatthereligiousconvictions ofthepartneroftheirchoicearea matterofprimeconcerntothehap- pinessandsuccessoftheman'a'ge, thenweshallnotbesorrythatthe disputebastakenplace,andweshall begratefultotheRomanCatholic Churchforhavingcalledsomuch Publicattentiontosoimportanta matter.

InEnglandasimilardeclinehas followedinthewakeofthenoble workofthegreatCardinalManning. ThankGodwearenotwithouthopefulsignsofarevival,theneedfor whichhasrecentlybeenemphasised bythereport,fortheyearending Decemberlast,issuedbytheHead ConstableofLiverpool.Inthe courseofhisremarkshecallsattentiontothesteadyincreaseincrime anddrunkenness,thegrowthofbetting,andthelackofparentalcontrol,whichlatterfeaturehedeclares isresponsibleforthegrowthofimpurityamongtheyoung.Graverurgencyforrevitalisingourtemperance organisationscouldnotwellbeconceived.Nothingfurtherneedbesaid toindicatetheessentialityofunfailingenergeticvigilanceinthedeathstrugglewiththisviceofvices.Unlesswestandonthealert,thedemonofintemperance,likeasleepinggiantarousedfromdrunkenslumber,will,withrenewedvigour,resumehis workofdeadlydestructiononthe soulsGodhasentrustedtoour charge.

VigilancedirectedaccordingtoCatholicprinciplesmustobviously particularly,activeinthespiritual sphere.Humanitarianeffort,busied withitsowntemporalconcerns,is praiseworthybutinadequate. The viceofintemperanceleavesitsmost deadlystingintheregionsofthe soul."Thispestilenceofsouls,"as St.Augustinenamesit,isavice enumeratedh\-St.Paulinthecategoryofsinsexcludingfromthe KingdomofGod.Inthedaysof St.Augustine(fifthcenturyc,the,,Ice hadbecomesocommoninAfricaas

Awonderfulinstanceofalittle girl'spresenceofmindhasjustcome underthenoticeoftheNavanauthorities,andhaselicitedwarmencomiumsonallsides.Itseemsthat amannamedReilly,engagedasa lock-heePerontheBoyneCanal,near stackallen,wasworkinginBeauparc afewdaysago,andintheafternoonhiswifebroughthimhisdinner.theirchildren,aged2and8,respectively,beinginchargeoftheeldest,agirlonly12years.Thesecondeldestgirlwhoisnotveryrobust,wascarryingtheyoungestin herarmsandwhilecrossingthelock oftheCanalbythefootboard,lost herbalanceandbothtoppledin,the wateratthespotbeing8feetdeep. Yetanotheradditionwiththatofthe wingistheprovisionontheeastern sideoftheCollegeoftenniscourts, thesebeingborderedontheVictoriaavenueSideby-wallsofreinforced concretewithabalustrade.These, brieflytold,comprisetheimprovementsconcerningwhichthevisitors wereenthusiastic.Afterduetime hadbeenallowedfortheinspection, theringingofabellthroughoutthe Collegecorridorswasthesignalfor alltoassembleintherearcourt ard.Seatswereherearrangedfor hundreds,whiletheremainderofthe assemblagedistributeditselfround thecourtyardandthrongedthebalconiesoverlookingit.HisExcellencytheGovernor,withDr.(luneand Party,occupiedchairsarrangedin thecentreoftheyard.
