Theyhadmadeakindofraftwith thetimber,andonthistheypiled theshinglesandprovisions,suchas bagsofflour.Takinguptheirpo- sitionontherafttheywerecarried alongbythecurrent.Therewas, however,athickfogontheriver, whichcausedthemtolosetheirbear- ings.Allwentwellfortwoorthree daysbutwhenpassingSmith's Landing,thefogliftedsufficiently forsomenativesonthehanktosee them.Thesenativeswerealarmed toseetheraftbeingborneonto therapids,andtheycriedouttothe Missionariesthattheyworldsurely belost.TheBrotherjumpedinto theskirt'whichwasattachedtothe raft,andtakingaropetheghttoreachthehankandstaythepro- gressoftheraft.Inthishefailed astheropewasteoshort.He mighthowever,havereachedthe bankandhaveescapedalldanger, buthemadefortheraftagain, whichheboarded5ustesitreached therapids.Thewholecraftshot downtheragingwaters,butfortun- atelythepassengerswereableto cling.tothehoardswhichformedit, am'toretaintheirholdwhileit wentunder. Theshingleandthe provisions.weresweptoff.Theraft cameagainuptothesurfaceand continueditsmadcoursein the foamingcurrentamidsttherocks. Fortunatelytheraftheldtogether. Themissionariessoonreachedaspot wheretheriverdivideditselfinto
threechannels,andtheretheyseem- eddestinedtodestruction,forthe middlechannelledtoanabyssfrum whichtherewasnopossibleoutlet. Intothistheywerebeingcarried, when,throughsomeforce,whichthey wereneverabletoexplain,asifit wasbysomepreternaturalagencyin answertotheirprayers,theraft wentbackagainstthestream,and takinganothercoursewassoonstuck uponashoalandstopped.Themissionarieswereabletogetfooting uponarockabovewater,andfromthis,usingtheskiff,theymanaged withgreatdifficultytoreachthe bankoftheriver.Theraftwascar- riedalonganddashedtopieces.The missionarieslosteverything. HereatSmith'sLandinginJune 1908,thereoccurredasadcatastrophe.Twomissionariesweredrowned. ThesewereFatherBremond, thepriestofthemission,andFather Brohan,ayoungFatheronhisway, tohismissioninMackenzie.FatherBremond,whohadbeenprofessed sixteen>ears,haddonegoodservice inthoseparts.Hewas42years ofage.FatherBrohanwasinthe arstyearofhispriesthood,and wasonlytwenty-fouryearsofage. Anothersuchcatastropheoccurred twoyearslater,whentwoof the Brotherslosttheirlivesincrossing ariverinAthabaska.Brother WelschhadbeensentfromtheSt. BernardMission,onLittleSlave Lake,toerectanewschoolhouse atthemissiononSturgeonLakein thatProvince.Theworkhaving beenhappilyfinished,hesetoutcc the;0thJune,1910toreturntohis ownmission.BrotherNicolasac- companiedhim,buthewastore- turntoSturgeonLakewithaparty ofIndianswhowereontheirway. backfromLittleSlaveLake. noononthesamedaytheymust havereachedtheBoucaneRiver,dis- tantabouttwentymiles.They shouldhaveproceededtoafordto crossthatriver,hutitwouldap- pearthattheyattemptedtocrossit wherethewaterwasdeep.TheIn- dianswhowereexpected,reachedSturgeonLakeMissiononlyonJuly 9th,butBrotherNicolaswasrot withthem.Theyhad,however,seen astrayhorse.Theworstwasfear- ed. Apartywenttotheriver, whereinduetimethebodiesofthe twoBrotherswerefound.Only thosewholabourinthosedistant

Oneofthemostinterestingchap-' tersinthelifeofCardinalVaughan istheoneundertheheading"For theChildren'sSake."Andperhaps, themostpracticalmonumenttohis memory,becauseittouchesthe'most far-reachingresults,isthe"Children'sProtectionandRescueSociety" whichwassofirmlyestablishedby theCardinalwhenhewasBishopcf Salford.
Thisweek.wedevoteawholepage ofthe"Record"toanaccountof theexcellentworkdonebyBishop Vaughan,andhissuccessorsinsavingtheneedschildren.
Whenthecryingnecessityofthe, workiirstdawnedonBishopVaughanhewasalmostappalledwecan stillseehimstrikinghisbreast, anddeclaringpathetically:-"through myfault."Theideathatchildrenof hisflockwerebeinglosttothe Faith,andthefactthathecoulddo somethingtowardssavingthem, seemstohavetakenentirepossessionofhisbeing.Hecouldnotlet thethoughtoutofhismind.

SheProvidedit,andyouwillnot finditelsewhere.Adistinguished Anglicanclergymanwroteinthe Hibbertjournalquiterecently in termssuchasthese.:"WhereismerryEnglandnow?EnglandIknow, butthemirthofEngland-diedat theReformation.Ceremony was oncehappy,nowitiscoldandsevere.Why? Becausetheideasof prereformeationdayspassedaway underthedestructiveblowsofLutherandHenrytheEighth,andmen scarcelysmileattheheavensto-day. Butdoeshenotmakethewayhappier,anddoeshenotgiveyoumany ahealthyopportunityforthepracticeofcharity,anddoesnothis cheery"Gadblessyou,"followyou alongwitharealblessing?Wecall thesedisadvantages.Iwishwehad moreofthem,tosoftenheartsand bringtheclassesandthemasses nearerto'godlycharity.Andlook howtheCatholicchild'sheartleaps forjoywhenhejoinsintheProcessionoftheBlessedSacrament, throughstreetsdeckedwiththe wealthofthetown,withtapestry andflowers,togivetheLordatriumph.Itisahappyday,ablessedmemory,whichisoftrepeated andrunsthroughallthelifeofa Catholicland.HerealisesthepresenceofJeansintheBlessedSacrament.Heseemstoustobetoo freeandunrestrainedinhisChurch, buthewilltellyouthatheisinthe houseandinthepresenceof his ownbrotherandfellowman,Jesus Christ,andhe.actsasifherealised hiskinshipwiththeGodman.Enteroneofouroldcathedrals.How theyspeakofGod.Theywerebuilt foranAltarandSacrifice. The placeisstillthere.Theytellofthe daysofFaithandoftheinspiration ofCatholicism.Nomeregeniusbuilt NotreDameatParis.Faithbuilt itafterinspiringit.Faithinand loveforJesusinthelittletabernaclerearedthosemonumentstoHeaven.DoIbelievethatJesusChrist ispresentinthislittleHost?yes, andifIhadanambitionitwould betolaydownmy,lifeforthat truth.Godiseverywhere.Heis inheavenandintheBlessedSacrament.IbelievethatJesusisin thelittleHost,nightanddaythat Angelskeepwatch;thatHishardis theretoblessmeandHiseyesto lookonme.Putyourselfinmy position.Isnotthissomethingto makelifebrighterandhappierand merrier?Isitnotmakinglifemore divine?
Themorallifecannotpossiblyhe sestainedbyemotion,sentiment,or temporaryimpulse.Itneedsmore solidfood-itmustbenourishedby firm,deep-rooted,rock-ribbedconvictions.Sentimenturemotion,like theinkwithwhichwerecordour thoughts,fadesawa3graduallyin thecourseoftime.Itmayproduce atransienteffect,butitisusually short-lived,passingaway.withthe occasionthatgaverisetoit.Principlesorconvictionsaloneareundying,eternal.Thosewhodependon suchstimuliassentimentoremotionareunequaltoasevereorcontinuedstrain,fortheyhaveno roots.Liketinefrailreed,theyare shakenandtossedaboutbyevery gustofadversity;whilethosewhoare actuatedbyprincipleorconviction, resemblethesturdyoak,whoseroots strikedeepintheearth.Theydo rightbecauseitisright.Andthey doitnotb;fitsandstarts,butconsistentlyandunflaggingly,instorm andsunshine,infairweatherand foul. TheNewTestamentreader willrecallthefigureemployedby Christtoillustratethispoint.lie likensthemanofprincipleandconvictiontoahousebuiltuponarock. furproficiency,inwhichthe-recent pupilsPossessschooldiplomas. Iftheyhadathandastandard textbookcontainingtherulewhich wouldsolvetheirproblem,itwould, withoutdoubt,beawelcomefriend. Everyyoungmanshouldalsoown anduseagooddictionaryanda trustworthyenceclopedia.Thevast treasuresofinformationcontainedin thesebooksareaconstantdelignt tothosewhowishtobewellinformed.
Itisofvaluetopossesstheoretical knowledge.Itisfarmereimportanttoknowhowtousethatknowledgeinaccordancewiththelawsof justiceandmorality.
Whenyoungfolksleaveschoolthey mustgooutintothegreatworld, whereotherPeopleexist,andwhere otherpeoplehaverightswhichmust berespected.NeithereTrinue-r.-rithneetic,dictionarynorencyclopaediaissufficienttoregulateee'cl: amongmen,sothatpeaceandhappinessmayreign.

Soalsowithus-ourforcesandour knowledgeareonlyatrileuponthe seaofhumanlife,andarepowerlessagainstthestrongerwindsandwaves unlessproperlyguidedandcontrolled.
Theonlypowerthatisabletodo thisisreligion,whichilluminesour conscience,andstrengthensourwill.
