Thereisawell-knownfable, of whichitistomypurposetoremind oubywayofintroducingtoyouthe subjectoftheLectureswhichIam proposingtodeliver.Iamgoing toinquirewhyitis,that,in this intelligentnation,andinthisrationalnineteenthcentury,weCatholics aresodespisedandhatedbyout. owncountrymen,withwhomwehave livedallourlives,thattheyare prompttobelieveanystory,howeverextravagrant,thatistoldtoour disadvantage; asif,beyonda doubtwewere,everyoneofus eitherbrutishlydeludedorpreternaturallyhypocritical,andthey,,themselvesonthecontrarywereincomparisonofusabsolutespecimensof sagacity,wisdom,uprightness,manlyvirtue,andenlightenedChristianity.IAMNOTINQUIRINGWHY THEYARENOTCATHOLICS THEMSELVES,BUTWHYTHEY ARESOANGRYWITHTHOSE THATARE.Protestantsdifferamongstthemselves.withoutcalling eachotherfoolsandknaves.Nor, again,amIproposingtoProveto you,ortomyself,thatknavesand 'foolswearenot,notidolaters,not hlasrhemers,notmenofblood,not profligates,notsteepedinsinand searedinconscienceforweknow eachotherandourselves.No,my CatholicfriendswhomIamaddressing,Iamneitherattackinganother's beliefjust,now,nordefendingmyselfIamnotengagingincontroversy,thoughcontroversyisgood initsplaceIdobutProroseto investigatehowCatholicscometo besotroddenunderfoot,andspurnedInaPeoplewhichisendowedby naturewithmanygreatqualities, moralandintellectual;howitis thatwearecriedoutagainstbythe verystones,andbricks,andtiles, andchimney-potsofapopulous,busy Flare,suchasthistownwhichwe inhabit.Theclearersensewehave ofourownhonesty,ofthesingleness ofourmotives,andthepurity of ouraims-ofthetruth,thebeauty, thePowerofourreligion,its exhaustlessfundofconsolationforthe weary,anditsespecialcorrespondencetotheseedsoftheweak-so muchthegreatermaywellbeour Perplexitytokndthatitsadvocates forthemostPartdonotevengain ahearinginthiscountry;thatfacts andlogic,andjustice,andgood sense,andrightandvirtue,areall supposedtolieintheopposite scale;andthatitisbidhethankful andcontented,ifitisallowedto exist,ifitisbarelytolerated,ina freepeople.Suchastateofthings isnotonlyatrialtofleshandblood butadiscomfortto.thereasonand imaginationitisariddle which fretsthemindfromthedifficulty-.of solvingit.

Nowf4myfable,whichisnot theworsebecauseitisold.I'he ManonceinvitedtheLiontobehis guest,andreceivedhimwithprincelyhospitalityTheLionhadtae runofamagnificentpalace,inwhich therewereavastmanythingsto admire. Therewerelargesaloons andlongcorridors,richlyfurnished anddecoratedandfilledwithaProfusionoflinespecimensofsculpture, andpainting,theworksofthefirst mastersineitherart.Thesubjects representedwerevarious; butthe mostpromineAtofthemhadanespecialirterestforthenobleanimal, whstalkedbythem.Itwasthat oftheLionhimselfandasthe ownerofthemansionledhimfrom oneapartmenttoanother.he did notfailtodirecthisattentionto theindirecthomagewhelithesevariousgroutsandtableauxpaidto theimportanceoftheliontribe. thatdiverseasweretheserepresentations,inOnepointtheyallagreed, thatthemanwasalwaysvictorious, andthelionwasalwaysovercome. Themanhaditallhisownwayand thelionwasbutafool,andserved tomakehimsport.Therewereexquisiteworksinmarble,inSamson, rendingthelionlikeakid,and youngDavidtakingthelionbytne beardandchokinghim.Therewas themanwhoranhisarmdownthe lion'sthroat,andheldhimfastby thetongueandtherewasthatother, who,whencarriedoilinhisteeth, contrivedtopullaPen-knifefrom hispocket,andlodgeitirthemonster'sheart.Thentherewasalion hunt,orwhathadbeensuch,for thebrutewasrollingroundinthe agoniesofdeath,andhisconqueror onhisbleedinghorsewassurveying thesefromadistance.Therewasa gladiatorfromtheRomanamphitheatreinmortalstrugglewithhistawnyfoe,anditwasPlainwhowas gettingthemastery.Therewasa lioninanetalioninatrapfour lionsyokedinharness,weredrawing thecarofaRomanemperor and elsewherestoodHercules,cladinthe lion'sskin,andwiththeclubwhich demolishedhim.

NorWasthisallthelionwasnot onlytriumrhedover,mocked,spurnedbuthewastorturedintoextravagantforms,asifhewerenotonly theslaveandcreature,butthevery creationofman.Hebecameanartisticdecorationandanheraldicemblazonment. Thefeetofalabaster tablesfellawayintolions'paws. Lions'facesgrinnedateachsideof theshiningmantelpieceandlions' mouthsheldtightthehandles thedoors.Thereweresphinxes,too, halflion,halfwoman;therewere lionsrampantholdingflags,dons couchant,lionspassant,lionsregardantlionsandunicornstherewere lionswhite,blackandredinshort therewasromisconceptionorexcess ofindignitywhichwasthoughttoo greatforthelordoftheforestand thekingofbrutes.Afterhebad goneoverthemansion,hisentertaineraskedhimwhathethoughtoftile splendoursitcontainedandhein replydidfulljusticetotherichesof itsownerandtheskillofitsdecorators,butheadded,"LIONS WOULDHAVEFAREDBETTER, HADLIONSBEENTHEARTISTS."

Youseetheapplication,beforeI makeit.Therearetwosides to everythingthereisaCatholicside oftheargument,andthereisaProtestant.Thereisastoryoftwo knightswhomettogetheronopposite sidesofamonumentoneofthem praisedthegoldontheshieldofthe warriorsculptureduponit,theother answeredthatitwasnotgold,but silver. Onthisissuetheyfought andinthecourseofthecombatthey changedplacesandwereflung,dismountedandwounded,eachupondie groundoccupiedoriginallybyhis foe.Thenthey.discoveredthatthe goldwasononeside,silveronthe other,andthatbothofthemwere right,andbothwerewrong.Now, CatholicandProtestantarenotboth rightandbothwrong;thereisbat onetruth,nottwotruthsandthat onetruth,weknow,isintheCatholicReligion.However,without goingonjustnowtothequestion, wherethetruthlies(whichisafurtherquestionnottomypresentpurpose),stillitiscertain,thoughtruth isone,thatargumentsaremany,andtherearealwaystwosidesineverydispute-Idonotsayboth of themsupportedbyarenmentsequallycogentandconvincing,ofcourse notstillthereisaProtestantside, andthereisaCatholicside-andif youhaveheardbutoneofthem,7011 willthinknothingatallcanbesaid

ontheother.If,then,apersonlistensonlytoProtestantism,anddoes notgivePlaytotheCatholicreply toit,ofcoursehethinkProtestantismveryrationalandstraightforward,andCatholicsveryabsurd becausehetakesforgrantedtheProtestantfacts,whicharecommonly fictions,andopenshismindtoProtestantarguments,whicharealways fallacies.Acasemaybemadeout furanyoneoranythingtheveriestvillianatthebarofjusticeisan injuredman,avictim,ahero,inthe defencemadeforhimbyhiscounsel. Therearewriterswhodressupvice, tillitlookslikevirtueGoethe,Ibelieve,hasinvestedadulterywitha sentimentalgraceandSchiller's drama ofthe"Robbers,"is saidtohavesenttheyoung Germansofhisdayuponthehighway.Thesamehasbeenreportedof Gay's"Beggar'sOPera andin ourowntimeacelebratedPoethas thrownaninterestoverCain,the firstmurderer.AnythingwillbecomePlausible,ifyoureadallthat canhesaidinitsfavour,andexcludeallthatcanhesaidagainstit. Nowthisispreciselytheweak pointofProtestantisminthiscountry..ItisjealousofbeingquestioneditresentsargumentITFLIES TOSTATEPROTECTION it isafraidof thesun it forbids competition.Howcan youdetectthesham,butbyecomparingitwiththetrue?Yourartificialflowershavethesoftnessand brilliancyofnature,tillyollbring inthelivingarticle,freshfrom'the gardenyoudetectthecounterfeit coinbyringingitwiththegenuine. Soitisinreligion.Protestantism, isatbest,butafinePieceofwaxwork,whichdoesnotlookdead,only' becauseitisnotconfrontedbythat Churchwhichreallybreathes and lives.ThelivingChurchisthetest andtheconfutationofallfalseChurchestherefore,getridofherat allhazardstreadherdown,gagher, dressherlikeafelon,starveher, bruiseherfeatures,ifyouwouldkeep upyourmumbo-jumboinitsplace ofpride.Bynomannerofmeans, giveherfairPlay:youdare Thedazzlingbrightnessofherglance, thesanctitybeamingfromhercountenance,themelodyofhervoice,the graceofhermovements,willbetoo muchforyou.Blackenhermake herCinderellaintheashesdonot hearawordshesays.Donotlook onher,butdaubherinyourawn waykeepupthegoodoldsign-post representationofher.Letherbea lionrampant,agriffin,awivern,ar asalamander.Sheshallberedor blacksheshallbealwaysabsurd, alwaysimbecile,alwaysmalicious, alwaastyrannical,Thelionshall notdrawthelion,butthemanshall drawhim.SheshallhealwaysworstedinthewarfarewithProtestantismeverunhorsedanddisarmed, everrunningaway,everprostrated, eversmashedandpounded,everdying,everdeadandtheonlywonder isthatshehastobekilledsooften, andthelifetobesooftentrodden outofher,andherPriestsanddoctorstohesooftenputdown,and hermonksandnunstobeexposedso often,andsuchvastsumstobesubscribedbyProtestants,andinch greatsocietiestohekeptup,and suchmillionsoftractstobewritten,andsuchpersecutingActstobe passedinParliament,inorderthoroughlyandonceforall,andforthe verylasttime,andforeverandever toannihilateheroncemore.However,soitshallbeitisforsooth, ourreceivedpolicy,asEnglishmen, ourtrad:tionaryviewofthings,to PaintupthePoneandPapistsina certainstyle.Wehaveaschoolof Paintingallourown.EverycharacterorpersonagehasitsowmfamiliaremblemJusticehasherbalance, Hopeheranchor,Britanniahertri-

dent. ThestoryofCaptainBoycottand bowtheLandLeaguebroughthim tohisknees,whichledtotheadding ofanewwordtotheworld'sdictionaries,isoneofthemostenjoyableinthehistoryofthegreatstruggle.Devitttellsitasfollowsin hisbook:

FatherJohnO'Malleywastheparishpriestofasmallvillagecalled TheNeale,betweenBallinrobeand Cong,inthecountyMayo,anddeservedlyenjoyedgreatPopularityfor hiskindlynature,hisdevotionto thepoor,andjovialdisposition.No goodcausecouldfailinwinninghis whole-heartedadvocacy,whilehewas onewiththepeopleinalltheirtrials andhopes,aloyalcounselloranda faithfulfriend.

ItwasnowtheCaptain'sturnto strikeback. Hewasacourageous andresourcefulman,andfoughtLis cornerwiththetruespiritofapluckyEnglishman.Heresolved,asa LandAgent,tohitbackatthose whohadinterferedwithhisworkmen.Hedidthis refusingto listentodemandsforabatementof rentswhenthetenants,followingthe generalexample,putbeforehim,the claimsforconcessionbaseduponthe previoushadseasons. HINTSFORIRISHSMALLFARMERS.

Mr.T.W.Russell,Vice-President oftheDepartment,deliveredanaddressattheAll-IrelandIndustrial ConferenceinDublinrecentlyonPossibleimprovementsanddevelopments inIrishagriculture,withparticular referencetoholdingsofthesmaller class.

TakingIrelandas,inthemain,a nationofsmallfarmers,Mr.Rsissell setouttoshowwhattheactualfacts are,andtodemonstrate,notwhat canbedoneforthesepeople,but whattheycanandoughttodofor themselves. Theamountderived fromIreland'sexportlastyearwas closeonelevenmillionfivehundred thousandpounds,andwiththeexceptionofbutter,thatamountnad -allowingfornaturalfluctuationsbeensteadilyontheincrease.

Firstthespeakerdealtwithpotatoes,and,dealingwiththatcropin Irelandintheyear1908,gavethe figures:-

Byimprovedmethodsofcultivation itwaspossibletoaddtwotons PeracretoIreland'spotatocrop. That,saidMr.Russell,isnotanopinionitisafactknowntoallskilledagriculturists. Ifthefarmer couldhepersuadedto"box."and "sprout,"thepotatoesbeforeplanting,notonlywouldthisincreased yieldbesecured,butthecropwould bereadyfordiggingthreeorfour weeksbefore Potato digging, under the ordinary planofplantingbegins.The effectwouldbetwo-fold.Theearly

Thisyearpotatoeshadbeenshipped fromdistrictsinCork,Waterford, andWexford,wherethesoiland climatearesuitableforsuchearly culture,inthefirstweekofJunebutofcourse,thishadbeenanexceptionallyfavourableseason-andes muchas£15atonhadbeenpaidfor theminGlasgow.Asecondcrop isPutintothegroundwherethese potatoesweregrown,producingat least£20anacre.This,roughly speaking,showedagrossreturnof i:7oforanacreofIrishground.And yetpeoplerushedtoAmericato bettertheircondition!

a potatoesmightbeoutoftheground andthelatevarietiesalmostgrown beforetheblightaPPears,and,in anycase,theywouldbebetterable toresistit;andinthesecondplace thisearlyresultwouldenableexporterstogetthepotatoestomarket,atleastinthelargetownsof GreatBritain,muchearlier,and withmachbetterchanceofagood price.Therewasonlyonedifficulty intheway.Itmightbesaidthat earlyfrostsarerisky. Buteverythinginagricultureisrisky.The planofboxpingandsproutingwasbeingfollowedoverlargedistrictsof thecountrynow,andwiththevery bestresults.Ifitcouldbemade anythinglikeuniversalitwouldadd closeupontwomillionpoundstothe creditofthepotatocrop.

Therewas,thespeakerwenton,no scienceinearlypotatogrowing. Whenthedifficultywasprobed it wasfoundtobeduetoacertain inborninherencetooldwaysand habitsandtosomedegreequestions ofmarketing.Howcanearlypotatoeshegottomarketexpeditiously? Ifthatquestionweresatisfactorily settled-anditmeantagooddealof negotiationwithrailwayandshippingcompanies,agooddealofdifficultyingetting,peopletocombine andworktogethersothatthepotatoesshouldgoinhulk,andnotin driblets-therewouldbeanimmense futurefortheindustry.

PROFITFROMPOULTRY.

TheIrishpoultrypopulation in 191o,Mr.Russellcontinued,wasa littleovertwenty-fourmillion.As aresultIrelandreceivedinrespectof exports:-

£2,744,133foreggs.

£927,o35forpoultry,and E32,460forfeathers.

Total-£3,703,627.

Hesawnoreasonwhythisexport shouldnotatleasthedoubled.They badfirsttogettherighteggsfor hatching,andthentoweedoutall thatwasdefectiveinthebirdshatched.Thisinvolvedthekeepingof records,huteverythingthatisworth anythingistroublesome.Ifthey weretobuildupagreatPoultryindustryinIrelandtheywouldhaveto getridofthenotionthatfowlcan doanywhere,andliveuponevery- thing.Withverylittleeffort he consideredthattwomillionpounds ayearmightbeaddedinavery shorttimetothenationalincomein connectionwiththepoultryindustry.

FRUITCULTURE.

Comingtothequestionoffruitculture,Mr.Russellsaidtherecould benodoubtIrelandcouldgrow a largequantityofthefruitwhichwas nowimported.RecentIrishfruitexportswere(invalue):In19o7-e21,693. In1908-£28,882. Ini909-E65,136. In1910-£109,957.

Thefiguresfor1910weremore thanfivetimesthosefor1907.This increasewaslargelydueto,thedevelopmentoffruit-growinginthe North,andwasrepresented,toa largeextent,bytheexportofapples andPearsfromBelfast.Ifthe Northcouldgrowfruitsuccessfully, surelytheSouthandWestoughtto beabletodothesame,orevento goonebetter.WithalittleknowledgewitlhthehelpoftheHorticulturalInstructors,andwithamagnificentmarketattheirdoors,itwas nottoomuchtosaythattheannual exportoffruitfromIrelandmight easilytouchonemillionpounds.

BUTTER.

TheIrishbutterindustryexists practicallyforonly7or8months intheyear,Mr.Russellsaid. Danes,Colonials,andevenRussians takepossessionofourmarketfor fourorfivemonthsintheyear.Eve..seasontheIrishdislodgedthem, buthadtobeginafresh,becausehere thereisnosystemofwinterdairying.Therewasnoquestionthatallyear-rounddairyingwouldpay.Figures,whichwerewithin5Percent., atleastofthefactsindicatedthat theIrishexportofbatterin1910 amountedto£3,584,81o. In 1907itwasoverfourmillionpounds.

BACONANDHAMS.

Theexportofthesetwoarticlesin 1910amountedto£3,691,981.The exportwassmallerinquantitythan thatofthepreviousyearbuthigherin, value.Thiswasanindustryundoubtedlysuitedtosmallfarmers,especiallyinthetillagedistricts.PigfeedingisatPresentoneofthemost Profitablebranchesoffarminginthis country.Thebreedingandfatteningofpigscouldbemostsuccessfully donewherethereisaconstantsupplyofmilkalltheyear.Here,againtheywerefacedbytheneedfor winter-dairying.Therewasaneverincreasingdemandforbaconand hamsinGreatBritain,andifmore homegrownfoodswereavailablefor Pig-feedinginIrelandtherewasno reasonwhythenumberofanimals nowkeptmightnotbeincreasedby atleast5opercent.

Mr.Russell,inconclusion,saidhe didnotbelongtothatschoolwhich expectedtoseeIrelandagreatmanufacturingcountry.Hethoughtit wasFatherFinlaywhosaidthat "oneBelfastwasenoughforIreland."Heagreed,buttherewas greatfieldforsmallIrishfactory.industries-indeeditmightbeheldthat thesearenecessarytothehealthy Progressofagriculture.Therewas noreasonwhythewoollenindustry, themanufactureofhosiery,ofboots andshoes,ofglovesandotherarticlesofthiskindshouldnotbepushedwithsuccess.Forthesesmallindustriescapitalwasnotrequiredon alargescale.Theclassoflabour requiredischeap,andthefactthat venturesinthisdirectionhadsucceededprovedthatitisenterprisemore thananythingelsewhichislacking.

Bartonwasnotquiteanovice in Vincentianwork.Hehadbeenan aspirantmemberfornearlytwelve monthsbeforereachinghiseighteenthyear.Thoughnostrangerto theslumdistrictofourbusymanufacturingtown,heexperiencedsome difficultyonthisdarkNovember nightinfindingthepoorwoman's house.Hehadtogropehiswar throughnarrow,grimystreetsina wretchedkindofWhitechapelneighbourhood,buteventuallyinadismal dull-litcourt,wherethecheering raysofthesunneverseemedtopenetrate,wherepureairwasan unknownluxury,hereachedthehouse hewasseeking.Thenupthreericketyflightsofstairsinasmall room,almostbareoffurniture,the Brotherhadthepleasureofhisiirst interviewwiththegoodwoman.the wouldprobablybeoverfiftyyearsof age,and,thoughpoorlyclad,yet cleanandtidyinappearance. Her thin,cold,setfeatures,hereyesso fullofsadness,andhermannergenerally,gaveonetheimpressionthat notonlywassheexperiencingthe lotofthecommonpoor,butalso someheavycross,causinganguishof mindandgriefofheart.Joe,in introducinghimself,mentionedthe SocietyofSt.VincentDePaul.said thatthekindwayinwhichFather Dominichadspokenofherhadbeen thecauseofhisvisit,thepleasureit wouldaffordhimifshewouldallow himtocalloccasionallyandrender heranylittleserviceinhispower, andheexpressedthehopethatthey wouldsoonbecomegreatfriends.He noticed,however,thathisadvances werecoldlyreceived.Bridgetshowednodispositiontobewooed in thissummaryfashion.Thosewhose privilegeitistobeengagedinsuch workfrequentlymeetwithpooreeoPle,who,atanagesuchashers, areverysensitive,andarenoteager inacceptingtheadVancesofstrangers,orformingnewacquaintances. Sheafterwardsbecame interestedinhisconversation,and thetaleshetold,somewellknown, endancientanecdotes,attributedto FatherTomBurkeandDanielO'Connell,butallnewtoher,greatlypleasedthepoorwoman.Nowandthen hewouldreadanextractfromthe dailyPacersrelatingtothe"ould" country,theopeningofanewchurch orsomegreatspeechofoneofthe leadersoftheIrishParty,andcn theseoccasionsJoefoundhehadalwaysamostattentivelistener.She wasevidentlytouchedbytheselittle attentions,foritwasquiteanewexperience,yethereyes,"thewindows ofhersoul,"alwayssofullofsadness,theladthoughtspokeeloquentlyofsomegreatsorrow,perhaps tragedy,whichhadcastagloomoverherlife.Worldherenvironment solvethemystery?heagain and againasked,himself.Noonewould saythatPumpCourtwasanideal placeofresidenceevenforthevery poorestofthePoor.Notoneof thetenantsinthosedingy-looking andunhealthylookinghousesbut hadhisorhershareofthatwretchednessandmisery,theordinarylot ofthesocialfailuresforwhichthat neighbourhoodwasespeciallynotorious, .iving,asshedid,thelifeofwant andsuffering,inthemidstofso muchhumanwreckage,absolutely friendless,shewasaccustomedtothe bitternesscfabjectPoverty,andwas inuredtoit.Sothatherpresent conditionandsurroundingswerenot thecauseofthegriefwhichtheBrotherhadnoticed,andwhichsomuch distressedhim.Besides,strangeas itmaysoundtoworldlypeople, BridgetMurphywasadeeP17.religiouswoman.SherarelymisseddailyMassorweeklyCommunion,rind shehadagreatdevotiontothat mostbeautifulepitomeofallprayerstheRosary.Notthatshe as inanywaysingularinthisrespect, foritisinthehomesoftheverypoor that.yousofrequentlywitnessthe practiceofmostsublimevirtues.Go intothehighwaysandbyea-aysof ourlargetowns,andhiddenaway neglected,unknownanddeserted,you willmeetinareligioussense,with "manyagemofpurestrayserene,"

Herememberedtheagonyofmind hethenhadsufferedbecontrasted hispositiononthatoccasion,teorroundedwithfriendsandenjoyingeveryhomecomfort,withthatofthis Poorwidow,whoselotitwas to eatthebreadofaffliction,friendless andalone.Ilewouldtake,he resolved,herlostson'spositioninher regard,werethatpossible,andbe insomewaywhathehadbeen to hisownmother. Inafewearnest words,heconveyedthisandmoreto thesameeffecttoBridgetMurphy.
