Thisisnotthecase.Sixmonths beforehedied,Mr.Marburggavethe moneyfortheerectionofafitting memorialtothegreatKey. His keenappreciationofFrancisScott KeyandthecompositionoftheNationalpoemcausedMr.Marburgto presenttothecityofBaltimorethis memorial.FrancisScottKeywas aMarylanderar.dhisforefathers wereMarylanders,andamongthe earliestsettlersinthisState.Ke' wasbornatFrederickandgraduated fromSt.John'sCollege,Annapolis. Hechoselawashisprofession,and ashewasaprofoundstudent,he soonmasteredtheart,andnotonly

Mr.Keywasoneoftheablestand mostdistinguishedlawyersofhis time.Hisloveforliteraturewas wellknownandhewas,adevoutstudentofPoetry.Incomingtothe eventwhichresultedinthewriting oftheimmortalpoem.Mr.Keywas foundintercedingforanAmericancitizenwhohadbeencapturedandtakenaboardaBritishman-o'-warduringtheWarof1812.Onasmall vesselKeywenttomeetthefleetof AdmiralCockburn,astheBritish weresailinguptheChesapeaketo bombardBaltimore.Forseveral daysKeywasvirtuallyaprisoneron theBritishshipMinion,andafter havingpressedhiscasebeforethe Admiralhewasheldonboardthe shipduringtheattackofthecity. Keypleadedforthereleaseof Dr.Beanes,whohadbefriendedthe woundedBritishattheBattleof Bladensburg.Keywasallowedto watchallthemovementsmadeby theBritishfromthesea,buthedid notknowtheresultsonland.He wouldhave ahappiermanif hehadknowntheresults. All throughthenighthepacedthedecks ofthatwarshipanditwasthere, andonthebackofanenvelopethat hewrotethefirstlinesoftheNationalAnthem.Anditwaswhilehe wasbeingtakenashoreinasmall boatthathecompletedthestanzas. Thismonumenttrulydepicts the Marylandpatriotandisoneofthe finestinourcity.Itgivesmepro- foundpleasure,MayorMahool,to presentthismonument,thegiftof thelateCharlesL.Marbury,tothe MayorandCity('ouncilofBaltimore."

Heryoungersister hadalsobeenstudyingatSt.Joseph's,andshe,too,becamea('ath- olic,tooktheveilintheOrderof Mercy,andis,withSisterM.Antonio,amemberoftheCommunityat St.XavieratBeatty.SheisSisterM.Hilda.Theirfatherfollowed themintothetruefold,andduring hislastillness,inhishomenear NineteenthandWallacestreets,was ministeredtobythelatelamented ArchbishopRyan.

SisterK.Antoniospentanumber ofyearsamongthepoorofPittsburg,engagedinacademywork. Wherevershewentshewaslovedfor herboundlesscharityandadmired forherferventzeal.Shewastreasurer,orbursar,oftheOrderin Pittsburgforthreeyearsandhasfor morethantwentyyearsbeenteachingthehigherclassesatSt.Xavier'sAcademy,Beatty.Hergradu- atescallhertheir"mother-friend," andareProudofbeingher"daugn- ters." Theyareamongtherepre- sentativewomenofPittsburgand othergreatcities,includingPhiladelphia. Besidesherclassduties, shehasfoundtimetoeditacollege Paper,"St.Xavier'sJournal"to writeandpublishfivebooks of poemsandproseandmorethan twentyschooldramas.

Theprefaceofherfirstbookof poems,"WildFlowers,"ofwhich therehavebeenfoureditions,was writtenbythelateArchbishopRyan. Herlatestbookofpoems"Heart Songs,"camefromtheconventpress atBeattyonlyafewmonthsago. TheremarkableseriesoftruestoriesofconversionswrittenbySister M.Antoniooverthepennameof "Rev.RichardW.Alexander,"have beendescribedbyRev.A.I'.Doyle, C.S.I'.,RectoroftheApostolicMissionHouse,Washington,as"thefirst literaryfruitsofareligiousmovementthathasspreadthroughoutthecountryandhasawakenedtheinterestofthemostsincereanddevout Catholicsouls"-themissionmovementfornon-Catholics."They havebeenreadwithkeenestinterest intheclassroom,"saysFather Doyle,"andhavefoundtheirway intotherefectoriesofnotafewconventsofreligious,wheretheyhave beenreadaloudfortheedification ofall,andinsomeinstancesthey havebeentakenintothepulpitand giventothepeopleinsteadofthe Sundaysermon. ThesestoriessomeofthemdesaraPtiveofpersonalexperiences,othersgleanedfromwell-knownmissionaries,andallvouchedforastrue, werewrittenfor"TheMissionary," "TheCatholicStandardandTimes" "AveMaria,""TheMessengeref theSacredHeart,"and"The Lamp,"andhadbeencopiedevery- whereandtranslatedintoFrench, German,andItalian.Twenty-eight ofthemhavebeenpublishedin a volumeofZoopages,entitled"A Missionary'sNotebook,"withillustrationsbytheauthor,ofwhich therehavebeenfoureditions.

Achild'smindislikeacleansheet Youcanwriteanythinguponit.It isopentoreceiveandtoaccept whateverisputbeforeit.Instructingchildrenislikesowingseedin virginalsoil. Wefindthattheveryfirstthing theydoistotryandtakeposses- sionoftheschools.InFrance,in Italy,inSpain,inPortugal-infact ineverycountryinwhichaninfidel Governmentseekstodestroyreligion andtocrushtheChurch,we find thatthefirstthingtheydoisto secularisetheschools.Theypass resolutionsandframelaws,tokeep religionfrombeingtaughttothe children.Theyeventeardownthe emblemsofreligionfromthewalls, throwoutcrucifixesandholyPictures,andinsistontheveryname ofGodbeingerasedfromtheboeas whichtheyplaceinthehands of theyoung.Thus,inFrance,togive asimpleexamrle,whereinachild's primertherewasprinted"Dieuest grand,"theyobliteratedtheword "Dieu"andput"Paris"instead "Parisestgrand."Now,thereis anoldproverbwhichsays"Fasest etabhostedoceri"-thatistosay aajeteisallowabletoderiveinstruct- donevenfromanenema."Most undoubtedly,fromtheseenemiesof theChurchwemayderiveinstruction,viz.,thatourforemostduty istowatchoverandtosafeguard ourchildren.'I'heyarethefuture fathersandmothersoftheflatten. Theyareitsfuturepoliticians,its f'torelezislatoreandrulers.en th,ineaerythinedeeends.IfwecannotsecurerifullysatisfactoryeducntionfirallthechildreninEngleid wemustmakeeneffortatleast,to giveourownCatholicchildren a

thoroughlysoundandCatholictraining.

HisLordshipthenmadeanearnest appealonbehalfoftheschoolsof theparish,inaidofwhichtheevent wasorganisedandconclude, daringthesaleofworkopen.

AnglicanDifficulties

ManydevoutProtestantshavebeen scandalisedbytheconductofthe AnglicanBishopofHereford.Ile invitedtoHolyCommunioninhis CathedralonCoronationDayMinistersofnon-conformistbodies. Jt wasgoingfarenoughwhenanAnglicanrectoropenedhispulpittoa non-conformistMinister.Buthere, wehave,whattomanyProtestants mustseem,asacriligiousact,emanatingfromaBishopoftheEstablishment. "TheChurchTimes," doesnotendorseHisLordship'sconduct.

Therehavebeendiscussions and recriminationsinahigherquarter. EarlyinMayintheU/PPerHouse ofConvocationatYork,someofthe Bishopsventuredtodealwiththe characterofserviceandritualin theChurchesand,itwouldseem, theydeprecatedthefactthateveryRectordidjustwhathepleased,so thatitappearedtotheirLordshios thattheBishopswerepowerless,and theflockshadtobecontentwith whatevertheygot.We,whoacenowledgeEpiscopalauthority,can sympathisewiththeBishops,and saythattheirindignationwasjust. Buttheclergyhadtheirsayisreply.Theysaid,thatwhile the Bishopsweresodisunited,andmid suchvariousviews,theydeemedit hardthattheclergyshouldbebound downbyhardandfastrules.So that,whereparisheswerenearthe border-lineofadiocese,andwhere inthenextparishesofaneighbour- ingdiocesehighritualwithvestmentsandotheraccessorieswasin fullfavourandpractice,theyalso might,withoutincongruityadoptit. Itwillevidentlybedifficulttostem thetideofHighChurchritualism. But,tobejust,wemustsaythat thereismorethanritualisminit thereisadecidedturningagainto thedoctrineswhichunderlieit,and thisitiswhichgivessuchvitality, andpersistencytothemovement.

TheBishopscannotbutbeawarecf this,andtheyhavetoputonthe bestgracetheycan,whentheysee theirauthorityflouted.

ThelittlepartyofIrishmenheaded bytheRev.JohnO'Shea,Catholic priestofArdmore,wereaccordeda specialreceptionbytheKingfor theirbraveryinattemptingtosave thecrewoftheMontroseschooner Teaser,whichwaswreckedoffArdmoreinaterriblestormonMarch ISlast.HisMajestypinnedthemedalsonthebreastsofthetwenty- twomen,andshookhands'witheach* Aftertheceremonythemenweretakentothesteward'sroomandsuppliedwithlightrefreshments.Mans ofthemappearedintheordinary coast-guardorsailordress.

Describing,subsequently,theeventsonthedayofthewreckofthe Teaser,theRev.JohnO'Sheasaid, "Itwasanawfulday,theworst stormwehavehadforeighteen years,snowingandsleeting and blowinggreatguns. Although,previously, throughm3lifeIhadtakenhut littlestimulantsofanykind,Iresolvedforthesakeofgoodexample togiveupeventhatlittle. From thatmorningIhaveneverwavered inmyallegiancetothecause-and thoughlossofhealth,deathitself, andaprematuregraveastheconsequenceofcold-waterdrinkingwere orn.nous13-predictedbycrowds of friends,Iamlivingstill,thankGod, afair,oldspecimenofthebeneficial resultsoftotalabstinencefromall alcoholicdrinks.

SometimeafterIhadjoiriedthe SocietyofJesus,Iwasengagediua TemperanceRetreatinBelfast,at therequestofBishopM'Allister. Thecustomary"spiritualexercises" wereperformed.EachnightSt. Peter'svastChurchwaspackedto overflowing,andtheusualTotalAl stinencePledgewastoheadministeredonthelastSundaytotheimmensecrowd.SuchscenesIhadfrequentlywitnessedandsharedinbefore.Theenthusiasm,thefervour, theapparentresolutiontokeepthe pledge:...ithful13-,thedeeproarof voicespronouncingthesolemnwords ofthepledgewereallwellknown andlongfamiliartome.Butthe subsequent,andalas!thefrequent violationofthatundertaking, so frequentlydemonstratedbyexperience,staredmeintheface,and 1 struck.Iwouldnotanymoreask thePledgetoberecitedaloud,and takenindiscriminatelybyall.Only tothose,henceforth,shouldI administerit,whooncalmreflection, werepreparedtostakethelife-long sacrificeoftotalabstinenceandgive metheirnamesandaddresses.Naturally,thisviewmetwithopposi- tiononallsides-theprocedurewas anunbiddeninnovationthelifeengagementwasmadetoodrasticthe trialwasdoomedtofailure,forit wasbelievedthatthecrowds,shrinkingfromthe"hardword,"would goawaynobetterfortheTemperanceMission.However,Iwasinexorableandwouldnotyield.On thatlastSundaynightoftheMission,inthepulpitofSt.Peter's, Belfast,Iannouncedtheconditions ofthenewPledge,whichIstyled the"HeroicOffering."Contraryto allexpectation,aboutthreehundred adults,thever,,'creamofthecongregation,cameuptotheAltar railsandsubscribedtheirnamesto thenewTemperanceventure.This wasstartedthe"Heroicoffering," inthecapitaloftheBlackNorth!

Again,someyearspassed,andstill withtheProgressmadebyTem. peranceIwasnotsatisfied. The thoughtgrewonmeapacethatwhat aboveallwasneededasastriking featureofasuccessfulTotalAbstinenceCrusadeshouldbetheexample ofsacrificegiventotheweakerBrethrenbythosewhohadnoneedof the"HeroicOffering"forthemselves.Thissacrificeshouldheun. selfishlyandcheerfullymadeforothers. Toworkoutthisidea,onthe28th December,1898,Iinvitedfourladies tomeetmeinourPresh3tery,GardinerStreet,Dublin.Theseladies werealreadyveterananduncompromisingTotalAbstainers.Mrs.A. M.Sullivanwastheleaderofour tinyband.AtourlittleroundtableconferenceIinformedthembrieflyofmypreviousdisappointments, andunfoldedthenewprojectand myhopesforitssuccess.Wasitonlytobeanotherdreamtobefollowedbyanotherdisillusionment Godaloneknewthisbutweallhopedatleast,forthecontrary. I thentoldthemthatduringmany yearsIhadendeavouredtobring Temperanceworkfromthetootrung oftheladderbyadministeringthe TotalAbstinencePledgetoallwho soughtit,andwithresultswhich, thoughmoderatelysuccessful,were bynomeanswhatIhadantic4mte.l. Henceforth,withtheiraid,Isaid Iwouldbeginatthetoprungofthe ladder,andgradually coming down,wouldstretcha saving hand tothose .vho neededitbelow.Inotherwords, intothisPioneerAssociationonly thoseonwhoseexampleoflifeperseverancewecouldthoroughlyrely wouldbeadmitted. Onlythose couldbememberswhohadnever takenstrongdrinkatall,orwho hadtaker.itinstrictmoderation,or whobylongProbationhadproved theirstabilityinthepractice of TotalAbstinence.

ThenameofthenewAssociation wouldhethe"PioneerTotalAbstinenceLeagueoftheSacredHeart." ItwouldhecotrPosedoftwogrades, namely,Pioneers,andProbationers.

Bothsectionsshouldtakethelifepledgeagainstallintoxicants.All Pioneers,withoutexception,should havecompletedtwofullyearsof rigidtotalabstinence,whileProbationerswerethosewhowerepassing

throughthesetwoyearsofwaiting. Pioneersshouldhavereachedtheir sixteenthyear,Probationerscould beadmittedatfourteen.AJuvenileSacredHeartAssociationfor childrenunderfourteen,withatotal abstinencepledgetilltwenty-live,was alsostarted.Tocounteractthety- rann3,humanrespect,tobringour membersoutintotheopen,tomake themknowoneanotherwherever theymet,toinspirethecourageand thecomradeshipwhichspringsfrom thesympathyofmembers,wedeterminedthatallourmembersshould openlywearadistinctiveemblemof theirundertaking.Itwouldhea pin,pendant,orbroochoftheSacredHeart,alwayspubliclywornas anoutwardvisiblesignofmembership,andasatokenbywhichwe mightallrecogniseourselvesassoldiersfightinguntildeathforanoble causeandunderthestandardofthe HeartofJesus.Onlyafterasearchinginvestigationoftheirantecedentscouldmembersbeadmittedas ProbationersorPioneersbythePioneerCouncilsestablishedat*eh centreofthework.

MixedMarriages

dispensationformixedmarriages wereinsisteduponfornearlytwo thousandyearsbeforetheNetemere sawthelightofday.Infact,it maybetrulysaidthatthenewdecreewasnotintendedtoalterthelegislationonmixedmarriagesat all.ItmerelyextendedtotheCatholicworldthelawoftheCouncil ofTrent,whichrequiredthepresence ofaParishPriestandtwowitnesses forthevalidityofamarriage,whethermixedorpurelyCatholic.The onlydifferencethenewdecreemakes, asfarasthelaityareconcerned,is thatthemarriageofoneCatholicto anon-Catholic,oroftwoCatholics beforeaRegistrar,orinaProtestantChurch,whichwashithertoconsideredsinful,isregardednotonly assinfulnow,butisnolongerregardedasvalidbytheChurchthoughitmaybelegalaccordingto thelawoftheland.

NoParliamentaryenactment-and certainlynomanifestofromaMethodistMinister-cancompelanyCatholictobelievethattheteachingof OurHolyFather,thePope,isnot orthodoxonthispoint,sotheefforts' ofourseparatedbrethrentostir01' sectarianstrifecanonlyspellwastedenergy,thatmightbebetterutilisedbycallingpublicattentionto thecryingscandalsofdivorce,and racesuicide,whichareplayingsuch havocwiththenationalandreligiouslifeofAustraliabutabout which,SynodsandConferencesare sosignificantlysilent.

Butwewouldbeunfaithfultoour trust,asaCatholicjournalitwe didnotre-echothetimelyadmonitionsofthevenerableHierarchyof Australasia,onthisimportantsubject.St.Paulcallsmarriagea "greatSACRAMENT,"andhere ournon-CatholicdiffersfromSt. Paul,andadmitsonlytwoSacraments-BaptismandCommunion.

Thefeverishexcitementthathas prevailedincertainquartersoverthe promulgationoftheNeTemeredecree,hasbeenrecentlydealtwitb byacorrespondentwho,inasomewhatburlesquestraintracedtheoriginanddiagnosedthesymptonsof thenewplague,called"Ne-temeritis."Ourattentionhasbeenfurtherdirectedtothatallabsorbing topicbyatelegramfromVictoria, appearinginlastTuesday's"West Australian,"whichinformedusthat boththeMethodistandPresbyterianChurchesofVictoriahadwarned theiradherentsagainstthedangerof mixedmarriages.WequotethefollowingfromthecircularoftheRev. A.McCallumPresidentoftheVictoriaMethodistConference

"TofulfiltheconditionsoftheRomanCatholicdecreemeanseitherthatthenon-RomanCatholic partytoamarriagemustrenouncehisorherchurch,orpromisethatallthechildrenfrom themarriageshallhebroughtup intheRomanCatholicChurch. ThePricefordomesticPeaceis thesurrenderofallloyaltyto one'sownchurchanditsteating.Thehome'wherethereis disuniononthemostimportant matterofreligionhaswithinit amostperilouselement. Butitisdecidedlyencouragingto hearthevoiceofevenoneminister-thoughitmaybe1;kethevoicecryinginthewilderness-joiningissue, withtheCatholicChurchincondemningthosematrimonialunions, whichtoooftenleadtothedestructionofallsupernaturalfaith.The attitudeoftheCatholicChurchhas, ofcourse,beenmisconstruedasemanatingfrombigotryandintolerance, whereasinrealityitisdictatedby theexigenciesofthecommissionshe receivedfromherDivineFounderto preserveintactthedepositofFaith, assignedtohersafekeeping. The Churchcannomoreencouragemixed marriagesthanshecanteachthatit islawfulforherchildrentoexpose themselvestotheProximatevoluntaryoccasionofsin,oradvocatethe abolitionoftheTenCommandments.

ItmayinterestsomeofhertraducerswhoPintheirfaithtotheBible andtheBibleonly,tolearnthat mixedmarriageswerecondemnedin the7thChapterofDeuteronomyin theOldLaw,andbySt.Paul,inhis 2ndEpistletotheCorinthiansinthe new.

TheApostleoftheGentilesfurther comparesthematrimonialunionto thebondofunitybetweenChristand HisChurch.How,weask,canthe mixedmarriagebesymbolicalofsuch aunion,whenChristisnotthesame Christtothepartnerscontractingit?, Andhowcanthepricelessblessingof domesticpeasedescendupon the householdthatisdividedagainstitselfonthatmostsacredsubjectof religion? Ifourneighbourisin want,wedonotaskhimwhatishis religion.Andwerespecttheconscientiousreligiousopinionsofour fellowman,butsurelywearenot boundtodemonstratethelengthand breadthanddepthofourcharity,by freelyexposingourCatholicsisters anddaughterstothedangerofspiritualshipwreck,whentheycanfind eligibleCatholicpartners,whowill beabletokneelwiththematthe sameAltarandsanctifythehome bydevotionsincommon.Atsome futuredatewemaydealwiththe objectionsthatourCatholicgirls urgeasexcusesforslightingthe ChurchoftheirBaptisminthismatter.Forthepresentwerecommend totheirthoughtfulconsideration theselinesofthepoet:"Maiden,weddingman,remember this Youtakehisnaturewithhisname, Ask,too,whathisreligionis, Foryoursmayonedaybethe same."

Themortalremainsofthe late Mr.ThomasJordanwerelaidtorest intheCatholicburialgroundatthe BoulderGeneralCemeteryyesterday afternoon.Therewasalargeand representativeattendanceofallclassesofthecommunityatthegraveside.Thegatheringboresilent,but convincingtestimonytotherespect whichthepeopleentertainedforhim duringlife,andforhismemoryin death. DuringthefirstweekoflastMay thefirstConferenceoftheDistrict BoardsofEducationwasheldin James-Street,Government-School, Perth.TherewasafairrepresentationofthevariousdistrictBoards, attendingfromCarnarvonin the North,CoolgardieandKalgoorliein the,East,BridgetownandAlbanyin theSouth,whileFremantle,Perth, andcentralpartswerewellrepresented. Theattendancecomprisedabout15 Ministersofvariousdenominations, about35laymenandthreeladies,delegates.Ofthisnumberonlytwo orthreewereCatholics.Manyof theresolutionspassed'wereof slightimportanceandtherefore,can bepassedover,buttherewerealso afewmatterswellworthlookingintofromtheCatholicpointofview. Thereseemedtobeaaconsensusof opinionthattheStateshouldtake uponitself,thefullresponsibilityof theeducation,technicaltraining,and materialandmoraloutfitofeach childoftheState.Oneresolution, proposedbyRev.Canon(lairs,was thatschoolareasshouldbeestablishedforonecentralschoolinlieuof provisionalandothersmallschools, inthebackblocks.Anditwasevensuggestedthatvansshouldbeutilisedtoconveychildrentothecen tralschoolfreeofcosttothepar- ents-butattheexpenseoftheGovernment.

Thencamearesolutionrecommendingtheappointmentof'districtinstructorstoconducttrainingclasses intheStateSchools,anddeliverlectureson(i)Thecultivationandfertilisationofthesoils(2)cerealsand growingthereof.(3)horticulture, fruitculture-poultryandeggproduction,&c.Mr.Colebatchadded thathehopedtheschoolboards wouldworkinthedirectionofes'tablishingdomesticeconomyclasses. ThencameupthequestionofBursariesandCar.onClairsadvocated thattheRoadsBoardandMunicipalitiesshouldbeempoweredtolevy aratenotexceedingonepennyin thepoundtoProvidebursariesfor asecondaryeducationanduniversitytrainingforstudentsinpoorcircumstances.ThisresolutionwasopposedonthegroundthatMunicipalitiesandRoodsBoardsworealready taxedtotheirutmost.Themoney shouldberaisedinsomeotherway.

Anotherdelegatesaidhethought thetimehadarrivedwhen"freeprimary,secondary,andUniversityeducationshouldbeestablishedbythe Government."ThemotionbyMrs. Cowan,recommendingtheincreaseof bursariesforboysandgirlsforsecondaryeducationandUniversity trainingwascarried.

Alltheseresolutionscarried,asif therewasonlyoneteachingclementintheState,andthat13:% the StateSchool.TheCatholicSchools areignored.TheCatholicandotherprivate,primary,andsecondary schools,notmentioned.All the workofyearspastinthecauseof education,thelargesumsofmoney expendedbytheCatholicbodyin buildingschools,andprovidingteachersthroughouttheStatepassed overinsilence.TheoneideacontrollingthewholebusinessofState education,isthattheGovernmentis tobethefoster-fatherfortherising generation.TheGovernmentist3 providethefundsforthisever-increasinglycostlydepartment.The delegatesobjectedtotheMunicipalitiesandRoadsBoardsbeingcalled upontocontributebya'directrate tobeleviedby,them,asonespeakerremarked"theyhavequiteenough todotoprovidefortheirownrequirements,outoftheeverincreasingburdenoflocaldistricttaxations.Andyet,atthesametime. theythinktheGovernmentshould incuralltheexpensenecessary.How inconsistentthisiscanbeshownat aglance.TheGovernmentdonut obtaintheirmoneyfromaspecial goldmine,theyarenottheProducersofthewealthofthenation. Theycanonlygetthemoneyh... theiraggressionontherightsof thepeople,bytakingfromthem theirhardearnings,whetherthose earningscomefromwagesorland production,orspecialtradecraft, industries.Allalikecontributefor theprivilegeofexistencein this gloriousso-calledfreecountry.What doesitmatterinwhatformthetaxationisimposed,whetherbyindirect ordirecttaxation.Itamountsto thesamething.Andyearlyitis becomingmoredifficultfortheindividualto.earnsufficientforhimto live,butitaffectsinaspecialmannertheconscientiousCatholicparentswhowhileburdenedwiththe weightoflocaltaxationofallsorts

isso,inaspecialmannerinrelation toeducation.Thereisnodisguisingthefact,thattheextravagant expenditureoftheGovernment,on trueSocialisticlines,pressesheavily onCatholicparents,who,whilecontributingatleastsayone-thirdof thecostofStateeducation,areunabletoreceiveanybenefit'whatever fromthatcontributionbut,inadditionhavetopaybyadirecttaxationfortheeducationoftheirown children-bothfortheprimaryand secondaryschools.Isthisjustice? Isitfairthatthisstateofthings shouldheallowedtogoon?Why shouldaCatholicbepenalisedby suchlaws?Theanswer,ofcourse,is thatastheCatholicCommunityis intheminority(thoughpossiblythey constituteonethirdofthepopulation)theymustsubmittothenumericalmajority.

Howeverplausiblethisreplyis,the factremainsthatthoughweareina minority,wehaverightsthatshould berespected.

Butthereisanotheraspectofthe present.systemofStateEducation, andwhatitwillleadto.andthisis farmoreseriousinitsresults.One 'delegateboldlyannouncedthatne lookedforwardtothetime,notfar ahead,thattheStatewouldhave purelyFREE, SECULAR,andCOMPULSORY education.Now,atthe PresenttimeMinistersofreligion areallowedaccesstothechildren formoralinstruction,thoughonly forashorttimeintheweek,this concessionisgrantedinasortof perfunctorymanner,asasort of palliative,sothatthemoralsusceptibilitiesofreligiousmindedparents maynotreceivetooviolentashock butevidentlytheideaisthatas timegoeson-parentsandchildren willbegraduallyweanedfromallreligiousbeliefs,andthenitispresumedsecularisationwilltakethe Placeofreligion-thatisthemeaning ofthesecularphrase-Theabolition ofallreligiousbeliefinschoolsand thesubstitutionofscientificmoral trainingforrevealedreligion. Nemesiswouldappeartobe alreadyovnreakingthesystemofGodlesseducationasmademanifestin thealarmsoundedbytheraisingof thequestionofMoralityattheConference-variousplanswereproposed anditwasnoticeablethattheclericaldeputiesrealisedthatthequestionwasofwideimport.Andit wouldappearthatsecularisationis therockonwhichthewholefabric ofthisboastedStatesystemofeducationwillbewrecked.Itdoes nottakemuchdiscernmenttosee thatmoralsarenotlikelytoflour-

ishinaschool,wheretheloveand fearofGodareeliminatedfromthe Curriculum.

Somewell-intentionedpeoplethink. thatbyscientificmoraltrainingand so-calledenlightenment,youthwill controlitspassions,andthatby anappealtoitsintelligenceandreason,therisinggenerationcandispensewiththesafeguardsofreligion andbecomemodelsofpurity,manlianduprightness-vaindelusion! Theexperimenthasbeentriedbefore andwithdisastrousresults.
