ANIMPRESSIVESCENE. Inthefoyerofthehotel,there wasaverybrilliantandrepresentativeassemblyofguestsawaitingthe signaltoenterthediningroom. ThePresidentsaidashorttime ago,thatalightcameasnatural toanIrishmanasafeast,andthe statementisabsolutelytrue.Thisis becauseofthelightingspiritthat isinhimandtheredbloodthatis inhisveins.Thatisbecauseheis eitherstandingforsomegreatidealsorcelebratingsomegreatand gloriousmemories.Heistryingto improvesomehumanconditionsor rememberinghisMotherlandin dreams.Hehoped,thespeakersaid, thattheyhadgonethroughthedark winteroftheirbattleandthatwhen thespringtimecametheracewould rejuvenateunderbetterconditions, thanhadbeentheirfortuneinthe chequeredpasthistoryoftheircountry.ThegreataptitudeoftheCeit underpropercircumstances,totake aleadingpartinthebuildingup oftheGovernmentofman,.countries hadbeenfullyexemplifiedmany timesintheirhistory.They all hopedthatthetimewasnownotfar distantwhentheywouldhavebetter conditionsintheir.ownislandhome. Iquestionwhetherinthewhole historyoftheworld,ifCelt,orSaxon,orRoman,orGreek,hadlefta morebrilliantmilitaryrecordbehind theminanycampaignthantheSixty-ninthhadin1861.Thehistory ofthatRegiment,fromthetime whenthefirstgunwasairedatFort SumteruntilthesurrenderatAppomattox,wasonegloriousstoryof strictattentiontoduty-onelong storyofvictory,oneheroicstruggle forthemaintenanceofthegreatNationalideal,andfortheadvancementofthegreatandundyingprinciplesofhumanliberty.TheSixtyninthRegiment,astheyallknew, wasunderfireforthelirittimeat theBattleofBullHun.ThatBattlehadnaturallyalwaysbeen the greatprideofthearmyoftheUrntedStates.
FromthebattleofBullRunon throughallthevicissitudesofthe War,theircareerwasonelongrecordofheroismallthroughthevary/ ingandtryingprivationsandfortunesoftheWar.AttheBattleof Fairoaks,withtheirgreenflagsbesidetheStarsandStripes,they plungedintothefightandhelda foremostplaceinthelineall throughtheverythickofthebattle. Thespeakerthenproceededtonarratesomeofthenumerousepisodes oftheWar,andespeciallyreferred tothebraveryoftheBrigade of IrishmenwhofoughtundertheleadershipofGen.MeagherattheBattleofGaine'sMills.
Theyprovedthemselvesheroesin thefaceofsuperiornumbers reformedandheldthepositionthey hadwonduringthenight,andmoringfoundthemstillonguard,and readytoholdtheirplacesin the line.Goingintosomedetailinthe militaryhistoryoftheCivilWar, thespeakersaid,thatoften when theotherRegimentsreeledbroken beforetheterriblechargesof tne confederatetroopsthegreenflag keptitsplaceinthefrontandmost gallantlykeptfirm.InallthebattlestheSixty-ninthwerefoundto firmlycovertheretreats,Enumer-
atingmanyofthemostimportant engagementshesaidthatthehistory oftheRegimentformedonebrilliant seriesofchaptersofmostmagnificentachievements.AtAntietam, wheneverythingwashanginginthe balance,andtheranksofmanygal- lantregimentshadbeentorn,shatteredandbrokeninthebloodystruggle,Meagher'sIrishBrigademadea recordthatstillshinesverybrightly inthepagesofAmericanhistory. Allthroughthatcampaign,from thebigengagementsdowntothe smallbattlesandmereskirmishes, thesamevalourwasshownbythese verygallantIrishmen.Gen.Barlow ononeoccasionduringthestormof battleexclaimed: "TheIrishBrigadehasbrokenatlast,"butthe nextthingthathappenedwasthat anorderlyrodeupandtoldGen. Barlowthathehadthehonourto reportthattheIrishBrigadehad chargedwiththebayonets;andhad takentheriflepits.Afternarrating manyotherepisodesthespeakerconcludedwithaverywarmtributeto thevalourofthemenwhohadwon suchundyinggloryfortheiradoptedcountryandfortheirrace.
Thetoastmastersaidheintroduced tothemaverybrilliantsoldier,one whofortwenty-fiveyears'servicein thearmyoftheUnitedStates,had madeabrilliantrecordforhimself, andforIreland-Gen.NelsonA. Miles.

Iamdeeplyandsincerelygratifiedtomeethereagainthebravemenof theSixty-ninth.Nocompany is moredelightfultomethanthecmpanyofbravemen,andnomen couldbebraverthanthosemenwho tookupthegreatcausein1861.Tee menwhocarriedthatcausethrough thelongyearsofdesperatecampaignsandterriblebattlestofinal success.Itisalsoagreatpleasure toseetheveteransofthatsplendid organisation.Theydonotlookas theydidatthattime.Theywere thenyoungmen,intheveryprime oflife,andtheveryflowerof Americanmanhood.
AsyourGovernorsaid,thesebrave menwereinmanycasesbornina foreigncountryandcametothis, theiradoptedcountry,tobeinspiredwiththespiritoffreedomand liberty.Inspiredbyfreedom-an unaccustomedfreedom-withgreat andloyalemotionsarousedbyan atmosphereofliberty,whichthey foundinAmerica,theytookupthis greatcauseastheyhavethat of HomeRule,andstandingshoulderto shoulder,carrieditthroughtofinal success,andsavedthisgreatRepublicfromdissolutionandfrom destruction.Youhaveheardand Perhapsrememberthestorythatis toldoftheschool,whereabenwas askedtogototheblackboardand writewhatheknewabouttheaffairsofIreland.Youmaybequite surethathewasanIrishboy-for theyhavethetrueIrishwit.He ranoverandwroteontheblackboard "TheconquestofIreland commencedsevenhundredyearsago -andisstillgoingon."TheGeneralrecalledthefactthatin IrelandRobertEmmethadsaid"Ler nomanwritemyepitaphuntilIrelandisfree."

FATHERWOODLOCKS.J.,ON SCIENCEANDMODERNMIRACLES. FatherWoodlock,ProfessorofPhilosophyatStonyhurstCollege,gave aremarkablelectureon"TheSup- ernaturalatLourdes,"intheCollegeHallofSt.Francis'Xavier's, Salisbury-street,Liverpool,recently. 'Pheaimofthelecturerwasprima- rilyapologeticandonlysecondaril\ devotional.Hedrewtheattentionof theaudienceattheoutsettothe generaldenialofthesupernatural, whichhadbecomeacharacteristicof theepochwhichwasselectedbyDivineProvidenceformostremarkable revelationsofthesupernatural.God gavemiraclesasmarvellousasthose recordedintheGospelstoanage thatwasrejectingtheGospelsbecausetheycontaintheaccountof miracles.Thecriticsapproachthe studyoftheGospelsnotasfreethinkers.butwithasettledprejudicewhichblindedthemtotheevidencebeforethem."Thesupernatu- ralisimpossiblethereforeithas nothappened,"istheirrootprinci- pleofcriticism.
Afternarratingthehistoryofthe Apparitions,FatherWoodlockexaminedthetheoryofdeceptionorhallucinationonthePartofBernardetteasapossibleexplanation of them,andconcludedthat,independentlyofthemiracleswhichfollowed andtestifiedtothem,thevisionsin themselvesarecredible,inthatthe setasideallthelaws-whichmedicalsciencehasformulatedasgoverninghallucinationor"auto-sugges- tion."Theextentoftheworld-wide movementofthepilgrimagesto Lourdeswasshownbyseveralslides onwhichweregatheredstatisticsas tothenumberofpilgrims,whoannuallyfrequenttheshrine,andthen, bythehelpofanumberofexcellentphotographicslides,theaudienceweretakenthroughtheevents ofatypicalnationalprilgrimage. Thesecondpartofthelecture dealtindetailwithsomeofthemore remarkablecures,andagooddeal oftimewasspentinexplainingto theaudiencetheelaboratecaretak-
enintheMedicalBureauwhenexaminingallegedcures.
Theattitudeofthemedicalprofes- sionhaschangedoflatetowards Lourdes,andlargenumbersofdoctorsgoannuallytostudyforthemselves,atfirsthand,thewonders whichoccurattheshrineofhealing. Prejudicestillexists,andwillalwaysexist,butmanydoctorshave honestlyputtheirnamestothetestimonialwhichliesforsignaturein thebureau,admittingthatevents occurwhich"sciencecannotreasonablyexplainbythesoleforcesofnature."
IndealingwiththefamousdeRuddercase,FatherWoodlockspokeof therecentdiscussioninthe"British MedicalJournal,"withregard to "Faith-healing,"andits'bearingonLourdes.Heseverelycriticisedthe wayinwhichadistinguishedmedicalman,writingonthecure,calmly setasidetheevidenceofhisconfreres,orratherdeniestheexistence ofsuchevidence,thoughitisgivenin ascientificjournaloverthesignaturesofthreedoctors.Itisinterestingtonotethataconferenceof overahundredmedicalmenatLille afterweighingalltheevidencefor thisinstantaneouscureofalegthat afterremainingbrokenforeight years,showsnosignsofre-uniting, acceptedfranklythemiracleandpassedaresolutionadmittingitssup- ernaturalcharacter.Thewonderful increaseinthenumberofcures wroughtduringtheprocessionof theBlessedSacramentwasappealed toasproofoftheDivinegoodpleasureintheactionoftheHolyFatherinvitingthe.FaithfultomorefrequentCommunion.

WhenIconsiderthemissiongiven totheChurchasconveyedbyOur Saviour'swords "Going,therefore,teachyeallnations. .TeachingthemtoobserveallthingswhatsoeverIhavecommandedyou,"Isea initacommissionandanembassy excellingeveryother.Therehave indeedbeendistinguishedembassies ofKingstootherKings,and of nationstoothernations;buthere, wehaveanEmbassyfromtheKing ofkingstoallthenationsofthe earth,andineverycentury,evento theendofalltime.Thenwehave toformourappreciationofitsimportancebyitsobject,whichwas, andisnootherthanman'severlastingsalvation.Thisisborneout byIsaiah'sprophecyofChristin thepassage "BeholdIhavegiven TheetobetheLightofGentiles, thatThoumaystbemysalvation eventothefarthestpartsofthe earth."
Bytheembassyreceived,the Church,fullyandfirmlyestablished, andempoweredbyherDivineFounder,hastoteachandtobaptisein God'sname.Allnationsaretobe broughtintosubmissiontoChrist throughherandmenaretoldthatif theydespiseher,theydespiseChrist Himself. WhenvsweighthemissionoftheChurchinthelightof whatwefindintheSacredScriptures,andofwhattraditionteaches concerningitwearepainedtohear PersonsaskingWhatistheChurch tous?Whyshouldwetroubleourselvesaboutit,oraboutherteaching? Whatareherlawstous? Forarewenothoundtorecognise theChurchastheonlyandthesupremespiritualAuthorityestablished byGodonearth?Anddidnot Christgivetheconsolingpromise, andassurancethatHewouldbewith heralldays,eventotheconsummationoftheworld?
KeepingthisCatholicandscripturalteachingbeforeus,wecannotadmitevenasPossible,whatmenare soreadytoassertconcerningthe Church,namely,thatitfellintoerror,departingfrciaPrimitivedoctrine,andbringinginvarioussup- erstitions.Whatissogratuitously asserted,mayheasgratuitously deniedbutletusweighthemeaningandconsenuencesofsuchassertions.Attheoutsetweaskourselves,howweremanygenerationsof mensavedduringallthosecenturies
AsaCatholic,andevenonlyasa manwishingdulytorespectthereverenceduetoChrist,theSon God,Iraisemyvoiceir.horror,and inthestrongestprotestagainstthe imputationwhichthesesuppositions castuponHisrighteousness. Mr.WilliamWallace,J.P.,insecondingtheresolution,saidinhis opinionGalwayholdsapre-eminent positionsofarassituationisconcerned. Itis,aseveryoneknows, theprincipalharbourontheWestern Irishseaboard,whichisnearestto theshoresofCanadaandtheUnitedStates.andthatitispossibleto performthevoyageacrossfromIrelandtoCanadainthreeandahalf days.Oncethatfactbecameproperlyknowntothepublicitwould bringarevolutionintransatlantic traffic,andhehadnodoubtthatnot onlytheattentionoftheircountry. buttheattentionofthepeopleof theContinentsonbothsidesofthe Atlantic,onceitwasfullydrawnto theproposedroute,wouldsecurefor itthesupportofthepeopleofAmerica,Europe,andtheUnitedKingdone(hear,hear).Notonlyhadit theadvantageofbeingthenearest IrishPorttoCanadabutitoffered byfarthemostdirectand the straightestandshortestroute betweenGalwayandLondon(bear, hear).InfixinguponGalwaythey wouldnotbeimposinganydisabilit. ordisadvantageontheNorth of Ireland,becausetrafficfromBelfast, andtheNorthofIrelandcouldas easilyreachGalwayasBlacksod Bay. LordKillaninsupportedthemotion.HesaidhewasChairmanof asmallcommittee,composedofrePresentativegentlemeninDublinand Galway,whoseobjectwastoPromotethisscheme.Itwasnotenough toconsiderthequestionofaterminalport.Theyshould,hesubmitted,putbeforethepublicand.before theGovernment,thepointthatif therewasgoingtobeafastTrans-

Therehadbeenadirect mailservicefromGalwayfiftyyears ago,anditwasasuccessasfar asitwent,andithadbeensupportedbyBelfast.IfGalwayfailed'n thismatternow,allIrelandwould fail(hear,hear). Animportant pointthattheGovernmentoughtto takeintoconsiderationwastheimportanceofmakingGalwayanaval baseandaharbourofrefuge. It wasamostimportantthingfroma strategicpointofview,anditwould heusefulinprotecting,ifneedbe, thegrain-carryingtradeontheImperialhighwaythroughtheEmpire, (hear,hear).Irelandhadaclaim or.theEmpireinthismatter,and Irishmenhopedthattheircountry wouldbeallowedtoshareaprosperityoftheEmpire(hear,hear).

ThepresentBishopofthediocese, heexplained,hadcomeincontact withtheSocietywhilehewasworkingasamissionaryinNewSouth Wales,andNewZealand,soheknew itsgreatpowerforgood.Before hisconsecrationBishopClunehad invitedhim(thespeaker),tocome toWestAustraliaandformbranches,anditwasastheoutcomeof thatinvitationthathewaspresent MinBoulderthatevening.Tomany T ofthosePresentthesocietywasPerhaPsknownmerelyasacharitable organisation,anditwaslookeduponassuchpureandsimple.Inthe oldcountrieswherepovertywasoftensodiretheSociety.certainlyaid muchtowardsrelievingthemiseries ofthePoor,butfortunatelyAustraliawassocomparativelyprosperous thattherewasnotthesameoccasionforthissideoftheSociete's work.Oneoftheobjectswhichthe Societyhadverymuchatheart wasthecareoftheyoungfromthe timetheyleftschooluntilsuchtime astheydevelopedthesettledhabits ofmenandwomen.Hemightbe askedwouldparentsnotobject,and saytheycouldlookaftertheirown boys.TheexperienceinSydneywas thatsuchathinghadneveroccurred.Thegoodparentquiterealised thatitwastoaboy'sadvantage tofollowtheadvicegivenbethevisitors,andsuchparentsdelightedto findthattheirboyswerebeinglookedafterinthisway.InSydneyit wasalsotheexperiencethatthe badandindifferentparentwasalwaysgladifsomeoneundertookthe responsibilityofseeingthathisboys werekeptontherightroad.The St.VincentDePaulSocietywasestablishedthroughouttheworld,and whereaBranchwasformeditwas foundthatgoodreportscamefrom it.Membersbypreceptandexample keptmanyontherightpath,who wouldotherwisehavestrayed,and theybroughtbackmanywhohad driftedaway.Hehopedtohavethe pleasureoffindingstrongbranches formedonthegoldfields.

ItisasingularphenomenonthatOil epidemicisconfinedexclusivelyto thatsectionofthepublicknownas "wowsers."Thevastmajorityof non-Catholicsshownottheslightest dispositiontofallvictimstothe bacillus,andwhatisstrangerstill, showlittleornosympathywith theirunfortunatebrethrenwhohave beenstrickendownbyitsravages.A bacillus,orgermitundoubtedlyis, andthebacterioligicalexpertsappointedtotraceitsintroductionintothiscountry,maintainthatit originatedfroma"Bull"letloose atRome,morethan3yearsago. ThelateMr.Rooney, andhisfamilywereeveramongthe mostzealousCatholicsinthebig Northerncommunityandthegrief overtheiruntimelyendwaswide spreadandgeneral. Withregardtoimmoralityamongst thegrown-upportionofthecommunity,theaimofthosewhoare workingforitsremovalshouldno thecreationofapublicopinionsufficientlystrongtoactasadeterrentandthismustnecessarilyhe effectedmainlyby'directchurchinfluences.Theatmosphereshouldbe suchthatthemanorwomanwho doesnotliveapureandcleanlire wouldbemadetoclearlyunderstand thatthedoorsofrespectablehomes wouldbeclosedtothem.Thatsuch anatmosphereandsuchapublicopinion,arepossible,Irelandisthe standingwitness.InCatholicIreland,offendersagainstthemoral codearesoshanned,lookeddownon, andostracised,that,totheindividualsconcerned,lifeinthecommunitybecomesbarelytolerable.
