NewJerseyhasamagnificentparochialschoolsystem.Therearefew Statesindeed,ifany,which are betterprovidedwithparishschools, thanNewJersey.Thedioceseof Newarkpressestothefirstamong thediocesesinthenumberofchildreninparishschoolsandinthe equipmentofthesystem.ThediocesecfTrentonwithascattering Populationandwithmanyobstacles isforgingaheadinthenumberand characterofitsparishschools.We maysafelyclaimthattheChristian educationofthechildrenofthe ChurchinNewJerseyisasettled fact.Weareallproudofthisbut wedonotforgetthatitwasthe holybishopsandthezealouspriests whohavegonebefcre,whohave laidthefoundationdeepandstrong ofourpresentparish school system.Andwhatwordscantell thesacrificesofthenobleSisterhoodsandthegenerosityofafaithfulPeople.
Wehavereasonforgratitudehere inNewJerseybutwecannotoverlookthefactthatonlyaboutonethirdoftheCatholicchildreninour countryreceivetheireducationin Catholicschools.Howmuchthen, remainstobedone Andthereis noworkintheChurchsoimportant.
LeoXIIIandPiusXhaveboth insistedoverandoveragainonthe necessityoftheCatholicpress.Leo XIIIhasdeclaredthataCatholic paperisacontinuousmissionand PiusXhasannouncedthatinvair. willwebuildChurchesandschools, ifweneglectthepress.What strongertestimonycouldPius X givetotheimportanceoftheCatholicpressthanhiscommandthat overthelittleprint-shopinVenice, whichhehadestablishedandfrom yshirhaCatholicpaperhehadfoundedwaspublished,thereshouldbe placedthisinscription

TheindifferenceofCatholicsinthe UnitedStatestotheCatholicPress isunaccountable.WecannotexplainitinanintelligentCatholic people. Wereitnotfortheselfsacrificeofacomparativelyfecalindividuals,theCatholicpressofthe UnitedStatesmightberepresented byaseriesofnoughts.Wehave notonesingleEnglishdaily; andwehavebutfewCatholicweekliesthatarenotbattlingagainst extinction.ThePovertyandtheneglectofCatholiceditorsarealmost aproverb.Anditisonlythrough thefascinationofthefaiththat menlikeDalyandMcCarthyand O'Shea,andO'Haganandsomany otherfineCatholiclaymenclingto theirwork.WhenthegiftedO'Malleydied,helefthisfamilystruggling.
WechargethattheCatholiclaity ingeneralaredeadtothenecessity ofastrongCatholicpressandwe areofopinionthatmuchofthisindifferenceisduetothepriesthood.
WHATAREOURFAULTS?
Someonehassaidthatthecurse oftheCeltishisindividualism. Doesitcomedownfromtheoldpatriarchalideawhichheldsodeeply intheIrishlife? TheCeltisan individualist.Thejokethatyou neversawanIrishorchestra,becauseeverymanwouldwanttobea leader,seemstohaveafoundation infact.
Nopriestintheworldworksharderwithinthelimitsofhisparish. thantheIrish-Americanpriest.He issupremethere.Butnopriestin theworldislessdisposedtoaid theChurch'sworkoutsideofthose limits.IncomparisontoourProtestantneighbours,whatweCatholicsdoforthemissionsofthe Churchisinsignificant.Placeany ofuspriestsinchargeofamissionarydepartment,wearewilling toworkourselvestodeathask anyofusParishpriestsforacollectionforthemissions,and we turnawaywithindifference.Isit theindividualismoftheCelt?
AndwhocaresfortheCatholic Press? Itdoesnotconcern the priest,whyshoulditconcernthe people?Itisnotaparishmatter letitliveordie.Inthemeanwhiletwo-thirdsoftheCatholicPeoplerarelyhearasermon.There arefourfive,sixorsevenMasses priestandchurchedificearepressed tomeetthedemanthesermonis atthelastMass. Circumstances makeasermonofanylengthan impossibility. Themostsuccessful preacheristhenewsboyonthe street-corner.TheSundayreading isthescandals,thesensations,the crimes,theheresies,thefalseprinciples,thesuspiciousmoralityofthe dailypress.Mightwenothaveat leasttheantidoteinthehome? Evenpoison,whendeprivedofits poisonouselement,asitenters,is notdangerousitisreally,nolongerpoison. Amindandheartfortifiedagainstthisworldlyanddangerousreadingbyrightprinciples, andsolidinstruction,is-to some degreeproofagainstthepoison.We mustridtheserpentofhispoisonousfangs.
IsNewJerseydoingitssharefor theCatholicpress?Whoknows? Whocares? DoesaCatholicpaper entereveryCatholichome?Tillthis isaccomplishedmuchremainsto bedone.AbeautifulstoneChurch. Yes ButOurLorddidnotconsenttochangethestonesinto bread France,Italy,SpainandPortugal havemagnificentChurchestheyare thewonderoftheworld.Forcenturiesthesenationshavepossessed collegesanduniversities.
BUTTHEYWEREWITHOUTA CATHOLICPRESSTHEYARE NOWWITHOUT A CATHOLIC PRESS.Itistruethateachof

Theannouncementof('anonKiels'spromotionhasbeenwelcomedby CatholicsinthePlymouthdiocese. Thenewprelateiswellknownto CatholicsintheWestofEngland. Formorethanaquarterofacentury,hehasbeenprominentlyidentifiedwiththePlymouthdiocese. whileasDiocesanInspectorof Schoolsformanyyears,hehasacquiredanintimateknowledgeofthe largeandprogressivedioceseover whichheisnowcalledtorule.His intimatepersonalknowledgeofthe spiritualneedsofDevon,Cornwall, andDorsetwillheofgreatadvantagetothenewBishopintheperformanceoftheonerousduties, whichhavebeenplaceduponhim. HisLordshipisnotonlyrecognised asnotonlyanecclesiasticcflarge experienceandsoundjudgment,but ofhighintellectualattainmentsand culture.Ontheeducationquestion heisrecognisedasanauthority fromtheCatholicstandpoint. Nodatehasyetbeenfixed fortheconsecrationofthenewDiocesan,butBishopKiely-willimmediatelytakeovertheadministrative workofthediocese.
BishopKielyisanIrishmanby birthandparentage.Hewasborn atLimerickonJune2srd,1854,a sonofMr.BartholomewKiely.His earlyboyhoodwasspentintheIrish citywherehewaseducated by theChristianBrothers.In1867, whenonlythirteenyearsofage, JohnJosephAlovsiusKielycame withhisparentstoliveinPlymouth wherethegreaterpartcfhislife hassincebeenspent.In1867he becameanecclesiasticalscholarat Clarke'sCollegiateSchoolatPlymouth,wherefiveyearslaterheenteredthePetitSeminaireatRoulers,Belgium.Afteratwelvemonth stayatRoulers,Viz.,inf87,1, he enteredtheGrandCollegeatBruges, whereheunderwentafouryears' courseofstudy,graduatinginphilosophyanddivinity.In1874FatherKielreceivedthetonsurefrom theBishopofBruges.
HereceivedhisMinorOrdersin May,1875,andbecameSub-Deacon inJune,t876,beingordainedDeaconinthefollowingAdvent. On PassionSundayinMarch,1877-just thirty-fouryearsago-FatherKiely wasordainedpriestatPlymouth CathedralbythelatelamentedBishopVaughan.

TheStatel'remierofNewSouth Wales,Mr.McGowen,addressinga meetingoftheBrowningSettlement, atWalworth,England,onthe21st inst,resentedanewspaperstatement thatSocialismwouldexpelthe Biblefromanareaof2,000,000 squaremilesinAustralia,andhe bluntlydeclaredthatmaterialism hadnotmadeitselffeltwithinthe Commonwealth.InreviewingMr. McGowen'sremarksitisdifficultto fixtheamountofcredencethat shouldbegiventothem.Itis truethat,asaPoliticalfactor,Socialismhasnot,toanygreatextent,madeitselffeltandthatas theagentofMaterialismitcould notberegardedasdangerous.When, however,hesaysthattheStatehas openeditsschoolstotheclergyto teachreligion,itwouldseemthat onthesurfaceofhisstatement therewasthedesiretoleadhisauditorstobelievethattheStateat thisendoftheglobewasthenursingmotherofreligion,abenignsentinelthatstoodasaprotectorbetweenitandtheadvanceofMaterialism.However,patriotictheintentionofMr.McGowanmayhave beenindefendinghisState,andthe Commonwealthasawhole,fromthe softimpeachmentoftheoffending newspaperinquestionthereisinour mindtheimpressionthatheprotes- tedtoomuch.BehindtheState's systemofinstructionthereiscertainlytheshadowofmaterialism, andthoughthepatriotzealofour legislatorsproclaimitsadvantages fromthehousetops,andmakeitthe subjectofglowingpanegyrics,that shadow,likeBanquo'sGhost,"-will notdown."Itisidletofoolourselveswiththebeliefthatwhilston theonehandwetrainthe mind ofthechildunderasystemofsecularinstruction,howevercarefully modelledbyeducationalists,toequip himwithallthesecularwisdomnecessaiwtohismaterialagrandisment,andontheotherhandwithholdfromhimtheelementsofthe higherwisdomofasoundreligious education,thatwedonotbegetand fosteramaterialist.Theresultsof thesecularistschoolsofEuropeare writtendeepinthebiographies of thosepublicmenthathaveproclai- medthemselvestheenemies of Christ.Whetherwelikeitornot wemustfacethehardandshameful factthattheidealsofChristian ethicsarebeinggraduallywhittled downincertainquarters,thatindifferencetoreligionisontheincrease,andthatnaturalismwithall itsvaryingpassionsisbeginningto showitsfilth,face.Weseeitsslimy andsinuoustrailintherecordsof theDivorceCourt,andourcrime lists.TheMarriagebondisnolongeraGordianknotwithagrowing sectionofthePeople.Indeed,its
sacredness,already'menacedbya Statute,isbeingmadebythema jibeandajest.Andwethinkit wouldnotbeaninsuperabletaskto laytheguiltofthismalfeasanceat thedoorofthatsystemofeduca- tionwhichexcludesreligionfromits curriculum.Knowingthevalueof ReligiontotheNationtheCatholic ChurchvaliantlytightsforthemaintenanceofReligionintheschoolbecausesheseesintheschoolthebest assetoftheNation-thatit is,orshouldbe,thenursery andbreedingPlaceofaclean andhouourablecitizenship. Alone shestandsoutfromtheruckofcon- flictingsectsstemmingthetideof infidelityandvoicingthesweetdoc- trineofJesus.Herschools,she insistentlydemands,shallbeinvio- latefromthedisintegratingphiloso- phiesofthematerialistandthera- tionalist,andtopreserveclear.and wholesomethemindsofCatholic youth,sheisPreparedtomakeeverysacrificeandtofronteverywave ofpoliticalPassionandprejudice.

ThearrangementsoftheCommitteeleftnothingtobedesiredand thesplendidmusicalprogrammeorganisedbyMissHildaHough,A.C. The workofdisembarkingtheheavycaseswassuccessfullyeffected,the wholeofthememorialbeinghoused. inthegoodsshedpendingarrangementsbeingcompletedforitstransferencetoMr.Porcelli'sstudio.The bronzecastinghasbeenexamined, tested,andpassedbythreeexperts inItaly,andarrangementsarebeing madeforafurtherexaminationat FremantlebyMr.Mann,theGovernmentAnalyst,onbehalfofthe memorialcommitee,theobjectbef ingtoguardagainstanyinferior workmanshipbeingaccepted.The workoferectingthestatueonthe PedestalneartheHarbourTrustofficeswillbeproceededwithassoon aspossible,sothatitmay-beready fortheforthcomingunveilingceremony.

However,hehadsentanexcellent substituteinMonsignorO'Brien,and inthenameofthe nuns, andthepeopleofthe district,heofferedhimamost heartywelcome.(Applause).The financialstatementthenunshad preparedforpublicationshowedthat thehouse,andabouteightacresof landwerepurchasedforthesumof i5oo. UPtoherfourteenth yearJoan'slifewasoneofprofoundseclusion,andheronlydesireduringthosedayswastopray toGodthatshemighteachdaybecomemoreperfectinHissightand moreacceptabletoHim.Herearly yearsashistoriansproclaimedwith onevoice,weremarkedwithamarvellousdelicatepurity,andshegave herdayandpartofthenightto God.AtHaberfieldthegoodSisters wouldbringupthechildrengivento theircareundertheinfluenceof thosecharacteristicsofJoan.Education,astheyfrequentlyheardofit to-day,wasnotthetrueeducation oftheChristianheart.Trueeducationwasnotmerelycrammingthe mindofthechildwithrules of grammarandarithmetic,andallthe othersecularbranchesofknowledge, butitsignifiedaboveall,thebringingforthofallthatwasgoodand nobleinman'sheart,inbringinghis soultowardsGod,andrepressingeverythingthatwasevil.Allthose goodinstinctsintheirnaturewould bedevelopedbytheSisters.Inthe nameoftheSistersheaskedthem tobegenerousthatafternoon,and todoeverythingintheirpowerby contributingtotheperfection of work,whichwasthenoblestinwhich theycouldbeengaged(Applause).

TheactivitydisplayedbyMr.DaltoninthepubliclifeofOrangeis wellknown,andanymovement whichhadforitsobjecttheadvancementandbettermentof the communityhadhiscordialandactivesupport.Hepossessedakeen senseofwhatwasrequiredofhim asacitizen,andhisvariouspublic obligationsweredischargedwith characteristicurbanity,cheerfulness, andmarkedability.Hewaslovedforhisgenerousdisposition,and noworthyappealfailedtoelicita spontaneousresponse.Hehadthe facultyofmakingnumerousfriends, hisgenialuprightqualitiescommendingthemselves'totheappreciation ofallhisacquaintances.Someimportantpublicmovementsowetheir existencetohiswidesenseofwhat hebelievedwasduetohiminpubliclife.
Thedeceasedplayedanimportant andusefulpartintheciviclifeof thetown.Hehadbeenanalderman foryears,andforthreeconsecutive yearsoccupieJthemayoralchair withcredittohimself,andtheCouncil. Lastmunicipalelection,althoughincapacitatedfromwork,and quiteunabletoseetheelectors,his Pastvaluableserviceswererecognisedbytheratepayers,whoreturnedhimattheheadofthepoll.The deceasedalsotookanactiveinteresrintheOrangeScho1ofArts, ofwhichinstitutionhewasavaluedcommitteeman.Heilthywholesomesportfoundagenroespatron inMr.Dalton,andthefootballers Particularly,willgreatlymisshim.
