Catholiccoloniesareformed'to bringtogetherCatholicswhootherwisewouldhescatteredamongunbelievers.Theyareasafeguardfor thesoulaswellasforthebody, andpromotetemporalaswellasthe eternalwelfare.TheCatholiccoloniesformrealChristiancommunities eachaparadiseinitselfinthe midstofaworldindillerenttoreligion.

BUSINESSMEN.

TheCatholicColoniesofferopeningsforbusinessofallkinds; for theyareplacesofsolidbusiness; heavycropsareproduced,largefamiliesareraised,numeroushomesare made.Thereisroomforprofessior.al,commercialandindustrialmen enoughtomakealivelytown.There mustbedoctors,druggists,lawyers, bakers,storekeepersandmanufacturers,alsobarbers,blacksmiths,contractors,butchers,milliners,hotelkeepers,railroadworkers,etc.,who knowntheirtrade.Butnomanis wantedwhodoesnotknowhisbusiness.Nomanthatfailedinfarm ingoughttogoinbusiness. It takespeculiarabilitytosucceedin business.Thebetteramanknows hisprofessionorhistradethegreaterpleasureandbenefititwill be forhimselfandforthepublic.Itis true,labourersmaydevelopintobusinessmen;buttheyseldomdo.It isveryimportantfortheprosperity ofthetowntopossessrealbusiness men,whowillnotonlybuildthemselves-hutalsothewholecommunity.

NON-CATHOLICS.

Therearemenwhoareindustrial labourersandwhowillremainsuch alltheirlife-time.Theyareexposedtoagreatdealofdangerand temptations,andtheyneedgrouping formutualprotection.Thfyoughtto formthemselvesinparishesinorder tosecuretheirrights.Itisgood toworkformanufacturerswhoalwaysgiveemployment,evenindull times,andnevercutthewages.It isimportantthataChristianspirit prevail,andthatamanisnotcompelledtospendhisearningswitha lawlesselement,inordertoheallowedtoliveir.aplace.Toooften saloonsandgamblingdensarethe resortswhereallthelabourersmust paytribute.WherethePriestsand sisterswill,hethepredominatinginfluence,theworkingmanwillbeallowedfullliberty,andhesoonwill savemoneyenoughtobuyhisown home,andhischildrenwillgrowup active,honestandmodest.

DAYLABOURERS.

Therearelabouringmenwhodesiretogotothecountry,butwho havenotthemeanstogofarming. Theycandosoiftheyjoinanindustrialcolony,wheretheycanearn moneyenoughtoundertakefarming Lumberingandminingcampsandindustrialcentresaretohefoundin newcountrieswherelandsarecheap. Christianworkerswillbemostwel comethere,becausetheyare the bestandthemostreliableoperators. TheemPloyerswillbegladtohelp themtosecureaPiececfland,where thefamilycarliveonwhatgarden

Despitethenationalboastoffair play,"thesquaredeal,"etc.,Catholicsareoftensurprisedtofindbigotrywhereleastexpected.However theexperienceoftheseveralchaplainswhohaveworkedontheSt. AnthonyChapelCar,acquitswestern non-Catholicsinmostofthetowns visitedofthatuglycharge.Infact, eversinceTheCatholicChurchExtensionSocietybuiltthecarand starteditouttocarrytheblessings ofreligiontoisolatedCatholics,it hasbeenfoundthatmanyofthe "othersheep"comegladlyatthe callofthepriestlyshepherd. fewextractsfromthelatestreports ofthechaplainshowhoweager manynon-CatholicsaretolearnabouttheMotherChurchandwhata harvestofconversionsmaybeexpectedfromtheclearingawayof misconceptionsofCatholicity

"AtPleasantValleyweweregreetedwithafullhouse,onlytwoCatholicsamongthenumber.Some oftherailwaymenshowedgreatinterest,and,meetingusatother townslateron,calledattheChapelCar,askingforafewmore FaithofOurFathers'forrelatives.

FinallyaCatholicfamilyisnota badplacefornon-Catholicstosettle in.Theatmosphereiswholesome,beingthoroughlyChristianandthere areexceptionalschoolsfortheeducationofthechildren;thefutureis prosperous,asnonebutgoodpeople willgotoaCatholiccolony,andno thingbutgoodlandwillbeselected, andthecolonieswillgrowinwealth andpopulation.FinallytheCatholicfellow-citizenswillnotonlybe tolerant,butjealouslyguardingthe rightsofallandanon-Catholicbusinessmar_willhaveasgoodashow ashisCatholicneighbournoPeoplearelessclannishinthatline thantheCatholics.somehaveimaginedthattheCatholiccolonizationplanistoisolatethecolonists fromallotherpeopleandallowno oneelsebutCatholicsintheirmidst. Illthatthismovementcontemplate. isthegroupingofenoughCatholics tosupportaChurchandschoolof theirown,withouthavingtobegfor helpfromanybody.Farfromtryingtogoawayirompeople,itdoes notevenconsideranyplacesituated awayfromtherailroaditwelcomes anysocialorreligiousbody that wouldsettleinthesamelocality anditwillworkwiththebusiness mentoPromoteanyinterestthat willhelptomali,eitabetterbusinesstownanddwellingplace.

Theforestsoftheworldcover 3,Moo,41o,810acres, ofwhich -;o,000,000areinEuropeand6;2,000,000intheUnitedStatesand Alaska.

Thecensusof1910givesAlaskaa populationcf64,1;6,only764more thaninl9oo;but33,000to36,000 ofthesearewhites,against3o,000 iniYo). TheparentunderthisProposedlaw willbeobligedtosendhischildto school.Ifaparentfailstodoso, hewillbesummonedbeforeajudge andwarned.Forasecondsimilar offence,thejudgewillreprimand himseverelyforathirdoffence,his namewillbepostedupintheplace whereheresides.

Howfarthismildprovisionofthe lawwillhavethedesiredeffect,it ishardtosay.ButtheBelgians, are,asarule,opposedtocompulsoryeducationandeventhisproposalofamildformofit,isabold strokeonthePremier'spart.Nor istheneedofitsopressing,foras aruleBelgianparentsareanxious tosendtheirchildrentoschool,at leastuntiltheycanbemadeto work.Underthenewlawtheywill notbeallowedtoworkuntilthey arefourteen.Thepresentageis twelve.Thisisanexcellentfeature intheBill.Otherfeatures,too longatpresenttodescribeindetail. arethattheBillpurposestoimprovethesalariesofteachers,to limitthenumberofchildrenineach class,andtoaddatechnicalcourse tobegiveninallelementaryschools whetherincities,towns,orrural districts.

TheBillwillbePresentedtoParliamentatonceandwhenvotedb.. thetwoHouseswillbeforthwithenforced. InasmuchasCatholic schoolswilltakeunderittheir shareofratesandtaxes.

BELGIUM

Thelawhithertoadmittedtheclergy,Catholicorotherwise,totheofficialschools,togivereligiousinstructiontoallchildrenwhoseparentsdesiredsuchinstructiontone giventhem.Thislawworkedwell irallplaceswheretheCommunal CouncilswereCatholic,hutintowns wherethemajorityoftheCouncilis LiberalorSocialist,thelawsofar astheCommunalschoolswereconcerned,leftthemexposedtosuch evilinfluencesthatCatholicscould notsendtheirchildrentothem. HencewhilePavingratesfcrthe CommunalSchools,theyhadto maintaintheirownschools,for

willopposeittoothandnail.P theCatholicswillstandfirmlyshouldertoshoulderandthoughtheir majorityissmall,willcarrythe Billthrough,whichKingAlbertwill certainlysanction,asheforeshadowedinhisspeechattheopeningof theBelgianChambers.TheBillwill bethemorewelcometothepeople sincethePrimeMinisterpromises thatitwillentailnofreshtaxation. andwilllessentherates.TheGovernmentunderitwillpaysix-tenths thecommunethree-tenths,andtlik provinceone-tenthofthemoneythe schoolbonsororderswillrequire.

ENGLAND

MATERIALPROGRESSANDSPIRITUALFAMINE.

AtFarm-streetonthelastSundayofMarch,FatherBernardVaughan,S.J.,continuedhisseriesof discoursesonthe"OurFather." ThebrilliantPreachertookashis textofhisobservationsthefourth Petition: "Giveusthisdayour dailybread."

FatherVaughansaidthat,judged byanaturalstandard,theprogress madesincethe"HungryForties," ofthelastcenturyapproachedthe marvellousand,aftergivingsome notableinstancesofit,thepreacheraskedwhethertheprophecy of theearlyVictoriansthatpeople wouldbecomebetterastheygrew itknowledgehadbeeninany%appreciablemeasureverified.Hewas afraiddreamshadbeenmistakenfar propheticvisions,andtheyhadvanished.Hehopedhewouldnotbe putdownasapessimistifheinsistedthatmoralandreligiousprogresshadnotkeptpacewiththeir triumphsovernature.Appliedscience,hadindeed,ministeredalmost miraculousl-tothewantsandills ofman'sbody,butithadnotgot theentreetothesancturayofhis soul.Inthelaboratorytherewas

nothingtoneutralisethedeadlypoisonsofsininthesurgerynothing wrtomitigatetheagoniesofatorturedconscienceintheobservatory nothingtocorrecttheaberrationsof themind'sfitfulgleamsoflight inthecameracellnothingtofix withPermanencetheheightsand beautyofvirtue;inthedenamo chambernothingtogeneratezealfor God'sglory,orloveofthebrotherhood.Unfortunatelybetweenman's triumphsovernatureandhisvictoriesoverselftherewasnoteven "leaseholdmarriage."Onlyyesterdayamechanicinalettertohim, hadsaid "Ourmindsarestill fullofdrearydarknessanddespair.' Inthiscriticalhour,whenthose whorecognisethedangerendeavour todrowntheirdespairbydiverting theirattentionfromthepublicwelfaretoconcentrateitontheirPrivateaffairs,Catholicsfeeltheirsense ofdutyandresponsibilitydeepen. Itisforthemtoarouseothersfrom theirselfishindifference;itisfor themtostemtheunbridleddestructiveforcesletlooseitisforthem tomobiliseforthefightagainstthe evilalltheresourcesoftruth,of morality,ofthesocialorder,and ofcharitythatareattheircommand,andinonesupremeeffort,all uponGodtosaveFrance.

AStrangeBird

Mr.MatthewGrannell,sextonof RowestreetChurch,Wexford,has capturedastrangebird,theidentity ofwhosesPecieshasbaffledallwho haveseenit.Foraconsiderable timepastthebirdhasfrequentedthe toweroftheChurch.Ithadap- parentlymadeitshomethere,and livedoncrowswhichitcapturedand killed. Itisstatedthatrecently someshotshadbeenfiredatthebird whichroostedovertheclock,and Mr.Grannelldecidedtocaptureit, topreventitsbeingkilled.For thispurposehemadeamostingen- iouscontrivance,cuttingtheteeth outofarattrap,andcoveringthecetchwithindiarubber.Hehad baitedthetrap,Placeditinthetower,andfoundthebirdacaptive nextmorning.Thedifficulty of placingitinacagewasgreat,as itwasveryvicious.Thebirdisa splendid-lookingcreature,notunlike aneagle,butwithoutthecommandinghead.Itstandsalmostafoot highandthewingsmeasuretwo feetfromtiptotip.Thebreastis lightgrey,andtheback,wings, andtailbrown.Thebirdisarmed withdangerouslookingtallons,ard hasacurvedbeak.Theheadislatontopandremindsoneofan owl.Thebirdisanobjectofgreat curiosityandhasattractedlarge crowds,noneofwhom,however,can tellitsspecies.Itwillnoteat breadormealordrinkwater,but livesoncrowsandrats,etc.

Theworld'slargestgraving-dock, constructedatthelowerendofthe Co.DownsideofBelfastHarbour, wasopenedonSaturdayforenoon, saysthe"IrishIndependent," of April8,bythesuccessfuldocking, thereincftheworld'slargestvessel. thenew45,0ootonsWhiteStarliner olympic,recentlylaunchedfrom Messrs.HarlandandWolff'syard, Queen'sIsland.Thedockis830ft. long,Toofeetwideonthefloor,and 42ft.6in.deepfromcopingtofloor, andcost£350,000.Perfectease,andcomparativelylittlecommotion onthepartoftheworkmen,either ontheOlymPicoronshore,attendedSaturday'sceremony,whichwas witnessedbythousandsofenthusiasticspectators,throngingbothsides ofthelagan.LordJusticeCherry andMr.JusticeBoyd,whowereon Assizedutyinthecity,accompanied LordandLadyPirrie,theHarbour Commissioners,officialsandleading citizensonthetugMusgrave,down

InthecourseofasermonatSt. Joseph's,Cllarrickmacross,onSunday,Ven.ArchdeaconM'Kenna,P.P. referredtosecretsocieties,whichhe said,claimedthattheywereoriginallyformedindefenceofthepriest atthealtar.Thathedeclaredto he"ablindsubterfuge."Thesesocieties,hecontinued,sethackthe chancesofIrishliberty,andsound, politicalthoughtwasblastedowing totheirbanefulinfluence,fortheir oppressorswerewideawakeandw retaliatefour-fold.Thesocieties, addedtheArchdeacon,wouldeventuallyrroduce-iftheyhadnot,indeed doneso-theworsttypeofinformer. BoulderEisteddfod.-Theopening oftheBoulderEisteddfodhasbeen postponedfromMay17toMay18 owingtotheinabilityoftheGovernortobepresentupontheformerdate.HisExcellencyagreedto cometoBoulderandtoformally openthecompetitions,andhearrangedforMay17,butsincehehas foundthatthenewVictorianGovernorwillbePassingthroughFremantlethedaebefore,sothatitwould beimpossibleforhisExcellencyto gettothefieldsatthetimearrangedifhewantedtoreceivethenew Vice-Regalrepresentative.Athis requestthecommitteethereupondecidedtodefertheopening.HisExcellencywillremainonthefields twodays.
