lifetherebyaharderone,butitis truenevertheless.

DeadlyMonotony

Monotonyoflifeisasresponsible formentalexhaustionorbreakdown asoverwork,eitherphysicalormental.Theclerkwhotoilsfromday today,simplyshippinggoodsfrom abackdoorintoawaggon,orthe housemaidwhohasabsolutelynorelieffromdomesticdrudgery,isquite aslikelytobecomeneurasthenicas isthescholarorthemillionaire. ThereissomethingmostPatheticin thisfact,andofallworkersinthis world,thefarmer'swiveswholive farawayfromthecentresofcivilisation,andwhocannothavethe pleasuresofagossipatanafternoontea,orofthethrillingexperiencesofaprayermeeting,graduallybecomesoutterlywearyofthe routineoftheirlifeoftoilthatin therecordsofourinsaneasylums wefindverymanysuchhistories. Suchwomenaremosttobesympathisedwith.

Nowoman,unlessshebeoneof exceptionalmentalforce,canbegin thedayinlonelinessasshemilks hercows,andendthetoilofsetting sunwithouthavinghadawordof thoughtfromanyoneoutsideher ownfamily,withoutbecomingin somedegreementallyenervated. Mr.FrankBrennan,whowasloudlyapplauded,saidthat,asamemberofthesociety,hefeltacertain amountofgratitude,indeedagreat measureofgratitude,towardsthe honourablegentlemanwhohadpaid thesocietythecomplimentofcomingtheretogivethemthebenefitof hisclearmindandablejudgmenton thatgreatquestion.Itwassome tenortwelveyearsagothatFederationwasestablishedinAustralia. Theyestablisheditwiththeblareof trumpets,andwithaconsiderable amountofself-congratulation on whathadbeendone.Atthattime theStatesweremoredistinctlyseparatedthanto-day,andFederation hadbroughtthemclosertogether. Beingatthecommencementinexperienced,theyhadtomovecarefully, andthereforethepowergrantedto theFederationwaslimited,andonly consistentwiththeknowledgeofaffairsthenPossessedbythem.They hadnowtrorethanadecadeofexperience,andas,aresulttheyfourd thatinmanyofthosedepartments, whichhadbeenhandedovertothe FederalParliamenttolegislatefor theirpowerwasrestricted.Owing torecentdecisionsoftheetigh Court,itwasfoundthattheirConstitutionalPowerswerenotsogreat asthepeopleofAustraliabelieved themtoheatthecommencementof Federation. Thatwasnotmere theorising. Itwouldhavebeen theorisingtospeaksotenyearsago, butnowtheywereaccomplished facts-mattersofhistory-andthe presentFederalGovernmenthadgiventhemthepowerofsayingwhether theywerewillingtonowgiveto theFederalParliamentthemeasure ofpowerwhichtheythoughtthey hadgiven,butwhichtheHigh CourtofAustraliahaddecidedto bemorerestricted.Onematter whichtheamendedconstitution wouldseektoadjustwasthatrespectingmonopolies-thatwastosay, theFederalParliamentwould be grantedthepowertodeclareanindustryorserviceamonopole.Now, thediscussioninwhichtheywerehutwithonePowercapableofact- engagedwasastowhetherthoseingallsuchdifficultywouldbeban- shacklesandlimitationswhichhadished.Thesecondamendmentre- beenplacedupontheFederalGov-latedtocorporations.TheFederal ernmentshouldberemovedandad-Parliamenthadmadelawstodeal ditionalPowergiveninregardtowithcorporationsandtrusts,nut tronoPolies,orwhethertheywereinadisputebeforetheHighCourt, contentwiththerestrictionsasde-itwasshownthattheFederalPar- daredbytheHighCourt,anddidliamenthadnopowertodealeffect- notwishtheConstitutionamended.ivelywithtrustsandcombines. M%fatherhasabouttwothousand acres,andalargenumberofsheep, cattle,andhorses.Someofthe groundiscultivatedforthegrowing ofcrops,chieflywheatandoats. Thefarmlookslovelyinspringwhen allthetreesandflowersare in bloom.Thehillsarecoveredwith differentkindsofshrubsandwild flowers,andthelittlelambsskip aboutundertheshadytrees.

WhenourDivineLordexpireduponthecrossforthesalvation of men,oneoftheRomansoldierswho stoodaround,wishingtobesatisfied thattheRedeemerwasindeeddead, piercedHissacredsidewithalance. Thegospeldoesnotrecallthename ofthissoldier,butaccordingtotradition,hewascalledLonginus.It issaidthathewasafflictedwith short-sightedness,almosttothe vergeofblindness,butafterhiscruellancethrust,somedropsofthe Preciousbloodwhichgushedfrom thesacredwoundsprinkledhisbrow andfloweddownuponhiseyelids. Immediatelyhissightbecameclear, andstrong,andatthes-metime bythisholybaptism,hissoulwas transformedandherecognisedinthe DivinevictimofCalvaryJesus Christ,theSonofGod.Having beencommandedtoguardthetomb oftheSaviourafterHisburial,he wasoneofthewitnessesoftheResurrection,andrelatedittothe chiefpriestsanddoctorsofthelaw.
