ThemagnificentMcKinleybridge, thatspanstheMississiPiRiverat NorthSt.Louis,which.wasopened recently,wasblessedbyArchbishop Glennon,andtheceremonyissaid tobethefirstofitskindinAmerica.Theceremonyisaconsoling evidence,thatdespitethemockeryof thescientistsandthescalingofthe non-Catholicworld,theheartofthe peopleisstillwithGod.Learned infidelityandinfidelChristianityare theunenviedpossessionsofthemen andwomenwhosemindsandhearts haveescapedIrorrthewholesome andnecessarydisciplineofreligion pervertsfrombothfaithandhuman reason.Themassofthepeopleare atheartCatholic.

CATHOLICPAPERSINPARISH SCHOOLS.

TheVincentianFathers,ofSt.Vincent'sChurch,St.Louis,saysThe SouthernMessenger,haveinstituted thelaudablepracticeofturningovertotheuseofthePupilsattheir parochialschoolsallthecurrentCatholicpapersandperiodicalsthat arereceivedbytheFathersatthe rectory.Partofthepaperswill gotothegirls'schoolsandtherest totheboys'schools,wheretheywill bereadaloudinthetwohigher classesandlatergivenindividually tointerestedpupilstotakehome. InthisavaytheFatherswillnotonlysupplysupplementaryreadingfor themoreadvancedpupils,butalso awakeninthemaninterestinand acquainteacewithCatholicnewsand CatholicnewspaPers.

Rt.Rev.BishopConatyofLos Angeleshasalsocommendedthe practiceofreadingthe('atholicpap-. erintheparishschool."America,"too,theableweeklyreviewpublishedbythe.JesuitFathers,alludes approvinglytotheplanfollowedby someNewEnglandpastors,ofdevoting"aPeriodofhalfanhour weeklyforthediscussionof-articles, whichthepupilshavereadInthe papersgiventothem.Inoneofthe catholichighschoolsofNewYork, theteacherofEnglishhasfollowed adeferentpractice.Eachweekshe readsforhalfanhourselectedarticlesfromsomeCatholicPaperto herpupils,andthesearethenrequiredtowritetheirimpressionsof thearticlesread."

Thecultivationofatasteforreadingeonsetimeshasitsgenesisinthe rendingoftheCatholicpaper.The childwhopassesfromtheparochial schoolwithoutsomefamiliaritywith Catholicwritersandapositiveinterestintheirworks,entersonthe dutiesofactivelifedeprivedofthat whichwouldbrightenmanyotherwisedullhoursandaddmaterially toone'sfondofinformation.

The teachersinchargehavealreadyprovedtheirworthaseducators.Well, then,mayTasmanianCatholicscongratulatethemselvesonthepossessionofsuchaschool.Theyhave donehonourtothemselvesinthe promptandgeneralsupportthey haveaccordedtoit.Theinfluence ofsuchaschoolonthecharacter andsocialpositionofouryoung menitwouldbedifficulttooverrate.Thegreatprincipleofreligiouseducationisoneonwhichthe CatholicChurchknowsnocompromiseisonewhichshecanneversurrender.AstheArchbishopofMelbournedeclaredattheopeningof St.Virgil's,itisaprincipleto whichtheChurchofChristcannot befalsewithoutbetrayingherDivinecommission"toteachallnations."ThisPrinciplewenowmore thaneverwishtoinstilintothe mindsofourCatholicpeople. In everyStateoftheCommonwealth, theyhaveshownmagnificentloyalty tothisprincipleandhaveconsistentlyandliberallyprovidedandsupportedtheirownschools.Thecost hasbeengreat,butaretheynotreceivingtheirrewardintheknowledgethattheyaresafeguardingthe faithoftheirchildren,that,theyare securingforthemthatmoral religioustrainingwithoutwhichvirtue andsalvationaresomuchindanger. Thewordsofthatbrilliant Irishman,Mr.T.Id.Healy,spoken intheHouseofCommonsontheoccasionwhenthequestionofgrants todenominationalschoolswasdebated,areworthrecording.ConcludingoneofhistrenchantaddressestotheHouse,hesaid"Iwill leavemychildrenlittleofthis world'sgoods,butiftheypractise thelessonstheylearnintheCatholicschooltheywillcomeintoarich inheritance."Fidelitytotheprincipleofreligiouseducationmeans loyaltytotheoldfaithforwhich ourancestorsmadesuchheroicsacrifices.Thispreciousheritage,hallowedbymemoriesofsuffering,sacrifice,fidelityandtriumph,itisour dutytohandontoourchildrenundimmedandunimpaired. Educationisessentialforsuccess inlife,buteducationdivorcedfrom religionismorefrequentlyacurse thanablessing.Educationandreligionmustbesoblendedthatthe resultwillbestrong,intelligent, practicalCatholicism.Thewhole experienceofhumanlifeimpelsto theconclusionthatmoralitywithoutreligionisimpossible. Weknowofwholefamiliesdisgraced andreinedthroughtheexcessesof onemanofsplendidcareers cut shortbylunacybroughtonby strongdrink.Menhavesacrificed, "honour,love,obedience,troopsof friends,"andallthatlifeholdsclear fortheonethingtheythemselves elbowtobethecurseoftheirlives. Iamusingonlythelanguageof stricttruth,whicheveryonemayveritybyfactswithinhisownobservation. ThelateMr.W.E. GLADSTONEwasanagedstatesmen withmanyyearsofwideandmat ureexperiencebehindhim,whenhe madethefollowingstatement in measuredtermsintheBritishHouse ofCommons:-"Ithasbeensail thatgreatercalamitiesareinflicted onman'andbyintemperancethan bythethreescourgesofea-,pestilence,andfaminecombined. TheNineviteslistenedtotheProphet,tookhiswordsthoroughlyto heart,repented,performedextraordinaryPenances,andthussaved themselvesfromGod'sanger,which wouldhavefallenuponthemhad theydisregardedthewarningsent them. Fastingguardsusagainst sin"fastingtamesallrebellionof theflesh,"saysSt.Cyprian"breaks thetyrannyofthePalate,andadornsman,itconfinestheinordinate motionsinagrave,hindsdownextravagrantdesires,andunitedwith humility,teachestheservants of Godtodespiseallearthlygoods."

Butthesearenotthemaximsof theworldaroundusquiteso,they neverwillbedidnotourBlessed Lordsaythattheworldwouldalwaysopposeandhateandpersecute HisChurch.Theworldrunsafter pleasureself-indulgence,sensuality, sumptuousfeasts,expensiveluxuries aretheaimsandobjectsofthe worldlyminded.

ThewordsofthegreatSt.Paul warningtheCorinthiansthat"now istheacceptabletime,nowthedayof salvation,"maybemostsuitable appliedtotheHolySeasonofLent. DuringthefortydaysofLent,which commemoratethefastofOurDivine LordintheDesert,extradevotions willbeheldintheCatholicChurches throughouttheworld.TheStationsoftheCrossmaybelooked uponasaspecialfeatureofthesedevotions;veryspecialandverygreat indulgencesareattachedtothisdevotion.Hence,ourBishop-Elect,as welearnfromhisPastoral,isanxiousthatthepeopleshouldgetampleopportunityofperformingthis fruitfuldevotion.

Wereallyshowourappreciationof virtuewhenweinconvenienceourselvesinordertoacquirethatvirtue nowthefastandabstinenceofLent ineybelookeduponassomaneinconveniences.Todenyourselvesin eatinganddrinkingrequiresalittle self-sacrificeonourpart.Butselfdenialandself-sacrificebecomecomparativelyeasytothetruepractic-11 Catholicwhothinksofallthesufferings,theprivations,andtheagony ofOurLordJesusChrist,theInnocentLambofGod-"TheServant isnotabovehismaster."

Manyofourreadersmaynotbe abletoobservealltheobligations asoutlinedintheBishop'sPastoral,butweshouldtryandobserve themasfaraspossible,weshould rememberthatLentisatimeof PenanceofPrayerandofrare Graces.Raregraces,indeed,will thegracesofthisLentbeforsome becauseitwillbetheirlastI.ent, thissideofEternity.Itmaybe suchforanyofusifweknewfor certainthatitwouldheourlast Lentonearthweshouldundoubtedly spenditinawise,holyandpenitentialspirit.WhatistheretoPreventusfromspendingitinsucha manner?Ifewedosoweshallbe richeringrace;thenwhetheritwill hethelast,orwhetheritheoneof manyotherstobegivenusbyGod, itwillbeonethatwillstandtoour everlastingcreditintheBOOKOF LIFE.

Whileweknowthatthoseengaged inverylaboriousworkarenothound tofastorabstain,wemustnot losesightofthefactthatfasting andabstinencearewithPrayerand theSacraments,mostPowerful meansofovercomingourownPassions,ofbreakingthetyrannical chainofguiltwhichbadhabitsfrequentlyforgearoundthesoul,and ofadvancingsafelyandsurelyour Eternalinterests. Hewasprofound,original,aboveall eualyticalandsearching.Hehadto getatthetruthandtoproclaimit tothefourwindsofHeaven.

Thebestpartofhaltacenturyhas elapsedsincethehugebulk,themajesticfigure,andleonineheadofthe Philosopherwerefamiliartothepee PieofNewYorkinparticular,and tothoseofotherStatesonoccasions. Manyofthatgeneration, whichhunguponhiswords,which wasgenuinelyproudofhisgenius, havepassedaway.Thepeople of thosedays,andofcoursenumbers whostillsurvive,werefamiliarwith hisremarkablecareerandthevariousstagesbywhichhereachedupwardtotheperfectlight."Inphilosophy,"saysarecentwriterin "America,'"therewasnoerror whichhehadnotexploredandtemporarilyaccepted-scepticism,pantheism,evensocialism."Itwas,in fact,"hisintellectualcourage,and honestythatcausedhimtorun throughthewholediscordantgamut ofsectarianism." William,died,andSirJohnenteredonnewresponsibilities.Unluckily, !.efoundtheestatessomewhatencumbered,andhethereforeletthe Hallandwentwithhisladyinto LincolnshiretoresideatGrantham forayearortwo.HehasespousedtheelderdaughterofMr.FredericSewallisGerard,ofAspull House,Lancashire,andin1868she died,leavingthreedaughters. In 1870SirJohnmarriedagain-the eldestdaughterofMr.EdmundMolyneu.xSeel,ofHuytonHey,Lancashire,andbyherhadanumerous family,hutonlyoneson,theheir. IntheCatterickRaces,aswehave intimated,SirJohntooktheliveliestinterest. TheCommittee, fact,arelargelyindebtedtohim. forhelpingthemtogetoutofdebt someyearsago.Theracecourse formspartoftheBroughestate, anduntilthepresentgate-meetin'i wasestablishedtheEasterfixture wasmaintainedbysubscriptions fromnoblemenandgentlemeninthe neighbourhood. Hehadasuddenseizureonthatoccasion,and hadtobeassistedofftheplatform. Besidesbeingmissedbyhisnumerousfriendsinthepoliticalworld, thesportingfraternityinthedistricthavelostinhimanenthusiasticworkerandoneoftheirmost generoussupporters.
