Seventyeearsago,writesacorrespondentintheChicago"New World,"aroundthepresentsiteof theCatholicChurchatEverett, boundedtotheeastbyLakeMichigan,tothesouthbyaGermanLutheransettlement,totheWestby theDesPlaines,commonlyknownas the"O'PlainRiver,"Irishemigrants had"'squatted"waitingfortheopeningofthetractforpurchase.To thenorth,unclaimedlandstretched away'beyondtheconfinesof the State.Sixmonthslaterthe"Land Office"wasopenedatChicagoand therewasnoscrambleasthereis to-day.becausebycommonconsent. thesquatters'riehtwaVasovereign right.

Ayearlater,thelittleband colonists,nowownersofthesoil, gathered,andatapointlessthan fivecitebloc'casouthofthepresent site,erectedthefirstSt.Patrick's Church.It'wasofrough.hewn, logs,floorless,pewless,statuelees, Pictureless,butthealtarwasthere, theeemesupremesacrifice,'anda devotionworthyineverywayof thatfaithfulpioneerband.

TwelveeearslaterthecongregationhadoutgrownitslittleChurch thecentreofeirn,ulationhadshifted andanewchurchwaserectedtwo milesnorthoftheorigir.alsite,still onthe"oldMilwaukeeRoad."Here fortwentyyearsthepeoplesupportedaresidentpastor.

Tn'75or'76aChurchwasbuilt. atbabeForest,andet.Patrick's becameaMissionattendedfromthat Place.Twelveorfifte-nyearslater LibertyvillebuiltitsChurchandthe originalsiteofoldSt.Patrie,t'R. oncemorebecamethecentreofPc, pulation.

Ir.themeantime,theChurcherectedintheearlyfifties,whichwasa large,brickbarnlftestructure,afterpassingthrourhmanetryingVicISSitil&S,wasstrtic.- liehtneie, andburred.TheCite-ehwasimmeiliatelre-erectedor.theoldfoundation,struckbylightningafewyears later,burndtotheground,re-erectedagainontheridfoundationand burred.Thefoundersoftheparish hadPastedawayandthepresent generation,rememberinglittle of theearly.struggles.andclingingto asentiment,creditablenodoubt, stillfa'wiredthesecondsite,but wisercounselrreveeledendoldSt. Patrick'sthroughearsendyearsof trialandheart-trea'inshascome intoherown,herelehef1inh-aitance.SothedalleationatEverett afewweek'sagowasnoordinary dedication.

TheCatholicChurchatEverettis indeed.anhistoricone,foritlinks CatholicChicagoofto-daywiththe Pastandtestifiestothesublime faithofthoseearlyCatholicpioneerswhomadepossibleourglorious Cathclicheritageofto-day. Thusourbigbrothercontinuesto teachus.AretherenotmanedistrictsinWestAustralia,wherethe priesthastoofferMassinpuelic hall,sometimesthemorningafter ratherquestionabledanceshavebeen heldinthesamebuilding.It perhapsthebestobtainable,but bothpriestsandpeo;1.1feelthatit isnotquitetheplacefortheHoly Sacrifice.Whynotputupalittle Church,alogbuildingora.wooden structure,-nomatter,howpooror lowlyinaPpearanceitmightea-it wouldbeinfinitel\ moresuitable fortheHolySacrificethanthosePublic ?
